hey! I'am new here, til now I was only "reading", today I'd like to show You something... ;)

I've been working with this scene since may 04, it is some kind of "antistress terapy" :)
it is not an comercial work, I've done it just for fun.
It shows comletely imaginated navy battle, jappanise airstrike on USS ESSEX WWII aircraft carrier. Real one was hited by the kamikadze, I have no bloody idea what was after.
my scene is completely non realistic, and doesnt shows historical event. jus a picture of carrier with few F4u corsairs in the air (there is also a "zero" far away), all was ment to look like cover of model kit set, or something similar. highly "candy looking", - my english is average, sorry about this..

scene was created with 3ds max 6, rendered in Vray in few steps (joined together in photoshop), it is important that whole scene is 100% 3D, there is no brush work on it, just a final color / contrast etc, corection. smoke - I've created it with particles, simple "geospheres" with attashed "noise" modyficator on it, and material with "fallof" in opacity slot. and procedural smoke, copied to the bump slot, and seted up to 80%. water - this is a simple (mesh edited) plane with "vray displace" attashed on it. + highly coplicated material.
foam - on the surface of the water, and water explosions are siple painted textures on simple planes, same as the far "flaks" expolsions.

people on deck, are "bipeds" with colored parts :)
here are few "making of" images, and final render of course:) (final image was rendered in 4k, this is small version of it:))

Wicked! I love the final image. Any chance of a larger render so we can see it better?

wow, totally sick...
great modeling and executing, but nice composition overall... it looks like a piece of art and not just some models slapped together.

Incredible work :)

The Vought Corsair plane is the best! ;)

Great work Damien, it looks great.

I particularily like the textures on your Corsair. Very realistic ! It looks like its been out in the pacific sun and also in a war.

My only crit would be that you have some definite shape problems with the corsair. The cowling on the F4U-1D which was used at this point in the war had a completely circular cowling. Your cowling is too oval looking and looks closer to a P47 Thunderbolts shape.

The engine supercharger intakes in the wing leading edges are also a little inaccurate and could use a tad refinement and the gun ports should be closer to the leading edge of the wing, whereas yours appear to be on top of the wing.

The final image looks awesome. Hard to believe its 3D !

Keep up the good work !

Wow, that is the most amazing war scene i've ever seen! It is so realistic, and looks like a photo. The plane's colours a beautiful and your textures are nicely done.I like that you make them look like a real plane by creating obvious imprefections like the patches.

The ship is very awesome. So much detail went into it - it is very real.

I like the upside-down plane in the foreground. It adds a nice touch.

Cheers

how did u do that water????

07-26-2004, 12:35 PM
it looks great.
You should make some highres renders.

07-26-2004, 12:36 PM
Damn, looks very good, the final composition opened my eyes (and mouth). Well done ! I had an instant Pearl Harbor movies flash ;)

If I have to comment on it, probalby just little gibberish : Water look great, except from the spot where (the sun?) highlights, the only place where the material looks less "water" than other places. I'm not shure of the plane that's upside down, looks slightly over the top and I'm not really shure about it's lightening either. People on the battleship look a bit too confy, I guess when a ship balances like that, I wouldn't be of for a walk, or I would be flying. :D

Just details....
But really great anyway, very cinematic, hope to see more of your stuff, stars earned here ! ;)

Nice image
You could use some more foam caps on the waves

and the corsair in the foreground needs motion blur.

:arteest: "SUPER RADICAL"
