Here you go Adam!

This is the first concept sketch. Not really sure about the outfit, still have to do some serious research into the mongol army.
This sketch is just a quick test on the general proportions I might be going for.

Feedback is welcome as always.

Its been a slow start for me on this one. Time to get those modelling gears in motion.
This is the sketch I'll be using as the main reference. Im not out on the color scheme yet, but I think it's time to get the modelling on the road.

Here's an update on Mr. Hog. I got about 6-700 polies left for the props. And I intend to use 'em :)

Good proportions and characterisation - he looks like sometihng out of a proper PS2 platform type game.

I think his torso is a bit too low poly, but as you said - he needs the rest for the props etc.

Another small update. Added an edgeloop to the torso and did the props. Im currently at exactly 3500 triangles. So whatever I want to put in extra, I need to take out first.

I think I will do small optimizing job because I want to add the Ghengis Khan Dagger.

I like it. Great cartoony feel to it. As far as warthog anatomy goes though, you must want to stretch that first bump under his eye out a little more. Those bumps are actually there to protect the warthogs eyes from a stray jab from another warthogs tusks, so they actually come back a little more to protect the eye.

But, stylistically, it's not important, so feel free to ignore me. :)

I fixed the first bump under the Eye, in the way Fungusmonkey adviced. Thanks Fungusmonkey! Thats some good advice, I was wondering what those lumps were for anyway.

I optimised some stuff and managed to squeeze in the dagger. Final polycount (in tri's) is 3498.

Now on to the uv-unwrapping und texturing!

Yeah, it's amazing how much you can pick up watching the Discovery Channel... :)

Thanks for the response! Here's an update on the texture. It's WIP obviously so things are bound to be tweaked. I plan to add a little more fur to his face, depending on what looks better. C&C welcome as always.

Wow! Fantastic texture job!
Only crit i have is that his eye looks a bit too bright and white - i would prefer a more animal-like eye with more black and very little white.

Looks really good, only crit I would have is that the skin looks a little too leathery like an elephants or rhyno's skin. But maybe it actually looks like that, I don't really know.

It's mighty good. I've been watching your posts and i must say the compared to what you have made it the past, this is by far a huge leap forward. How did you do from modeling and textureing this, to makeing what I see before me? Whats your secert? and can you post the texture map?

Serul: Thanks for the response. The skin of the warthog is quite leathery, but I must say I exaggerated it a bit, It just looked a bit better that way. Im still planning to add a layer of fur on the texture.

funkyrayuk: Thanks, Ill post a texture as soon as I covered most of the model. The texture sheet is like 40 % grey at the moment. I like to post it when everything is filled up.

YerEvilTwin: Thanks for the compliment. No big secret here. The model on that site is probably more than a year old now (probably closer to two years now), and I've done a LOT of game art in the meanwhile.
I havent gotten around to updating my site in a long while. So the work there is mostly from my humble beginnings as a 3d artist. That was a high poly model btw, and the emphasis (for me) was more in the model rather than the textures.

Some models I posted here in competitions (game icons and movie icons, dont know the exact names anymore) will show a more gradual progression I think. Another factor is that I never actually allowed myself to work on such a big resolution texture. It allows me to put in a lot more detail compared to my previous work.
At Little Chicken where I work, I have to keep the textures real small to keep the filesize down, because we do a lot of internet 3d games. So I kinda got used to using small textures. Using a texture this big is quite liberating I must say. The texture sheet is now 1500x1500 pixels, so it will be scaled down for the final entry. I have an additional texture sheet at 1024 pixels for the props, this will be scaled down to a 512 texture.

Texture map will be posted, if there's more to see on it. As I said, right now, It's about 40% grey.

Filled up most of the grey area's, so here's the texture guys (in reduced form)
Note that most of it is subject to change. I just started on the blue shirt, and some area's are empty all together.

Awesome! Are you planning on using normal mapping (not that it needs it, but it might get extra points) So far I've got a strong feeling that this will be a tough one to beat.

Well, the body was mostly textured (not finished though) And all the props were untextured. I just made a start looking into mongol art and mosaics for the armor. I wasnt even beginning rigging. So yeah, mostly unfinished :)
