View Full Version : Speed modeling session : theme : Chimeras

07 July 2004, 06:33 PM
Chimeras are fictional creatures made of a compound of different animal parts. You have to model such a creature (you can go for humanoid) in up to 4 hours; focus on the compound aspect (if you only model a head, it has to be formed of elements of at least two animal origins).
This session runs until monday, July the 26th.

Post a wip image after 2 hours of work , and a final image made of different angle views of your model and level 0 wires after up to 4 hours .

Have fun!

Just a "Q"

If we model the whole animal.

whats the MIN number of diffrent animal compunds needed? and the MAX?

07 July 2004, 06:45 PM
min is two.
max is... mm.. just as much as you can since the different origins are recognizable.

Anyone one know who made this statue?

07 July 2004, 07:06 PM
it's an antique statue, prolly from like 5th century bc, found in Arezzo, Italy.

Looks like the original creature had the head of a chimpanzee, a head of a gazelle, a mane of a sheep, body of a lion, and a snake for a tail.

07 July 2004, 05:58 AM
There is also a reference to Chimeras in Impossible Mission 2, it being the biological weapon.

"fire-breathing she-monster with a lion's head and a goat's body and a serpent's tail; daughter of Typhon"

Sound's like my ex girlfriend!

Just a bit of trivia.

07 July 2004, 06:25 AM
Ooooh, can I make an Esquilax? that most fearsome of creatures with the body of a rabbit, and the head of a rabbit?

no... I suppose not, damn you simpsons :)

07 July 2004, 08:09 AM
yeah ive got a couple of hours to kill - starting now - and i just watched spiderman 2 again so excuse an influence here or there ;)

07 July 2004, 08:22 AM
u should visit my website (, the pics are a little old but I've got a chimaera, pegasus and bellarophon there!

07 July 2004, 10:36 AM
well i have to go - i didnt get nearly as far as i wanted to. i know its not exactly a chimera by definition! but i was thinking more along the lines of a mrs oct kind of reincarnated. got the arms working pretty good - too bad they're backwards with the sucktion caps. and they are ment to be snakes for the fingers on them - not the most original idea i know but it kept me entertained. oh well got to go!

07 July 2004, 11:10 AM
Im on this one too. I got the perfect idea for a chimera. It's scary as hell.

07 July 2004, 02:19 PM
Perhaps I should have thought this through a bit better before I started. 2 hours in and its not much of a chimaera yet..... more a wierd angry dog at the moment.

07 July 2004, 04:42 PM
Hey, i liked the idea of the Chimera of Arezzo, and I have model this so far!(2 hours)

07 July 2004, 07:04 PM

07 July 2004, 07:26 PM
This is what I did so far......1 hour and 40 minutes.....I'll finish it later tonight or tomorrow.....

07 July 2004, 11:26 PM
Wow, I love the style of your creature berko.

I'm feeling a little inadequate now. Anyway here's how my griffin's coming along after 45 mins - have just about blocked it out:

Of course as everyone knows it's a cross between a lion and an eagle. It's my family's crest so seems appropriate.

07 July 2004, 04:41 AM
Here is the finished model......4 hours straight.....missing details but overall it's there.....hope you like it.... some post-work in photoshop...

wires are attached at well as the final image.....

I converted the final poly model into subd's and worked on some of the details........

07 July 2004, 10:32 AM
ahh sigh a couple more hours tonight and im done. at least shes more female now.

07 July 2004, 12:19 PM
man I dont have enough time, that why I love these, this is my first proper one, I havent got any time left, so I just modelled a human, gave him some monkey like attributes, and on the end of his tail, a snake, I apologize for my inadequicy, but Im rendering now, ETA 30 mins

07 July 2004, 12:50 PM
Hey guys... after yesterday evening's work on head.. i got time to sit in to today again... last evening i spent 2 hrs.... today my challenge was to finish up the WHOLE F***KING muscular body in another pending 2 hrs.:D
it was really a challenge for me.. finally i pushed it up from there and finall in about another 2hr. 25 mins. i was able to complete the body.. in that duration i even had 2 cups of tea.. and SIDE BY SIDE was chatting with my friend too.. SO it took those 15-20 mins. extra...
hope next time i'll be able to SHRINK it to exact allotted time.:)
