View Full Version : Robot Hopper, Tristan_bethe (3D)

07-03-2004, 07:41 PM (

This robotic grasshopper i made last summer.
It was created with this as reference:

The hoppers:

It's a bit undersampled here and there but rendering on my xeon 1.7 Ghz was quite long already:D

Made in 3ds max 5 with brazil RS.
Mesh was about 100 mb which was a major pain when i started to animate so i devided it in several parts (xref objects). It took long to load but at least i could save it quikly:rolleyes:

some more:

---edited july 30---

I've redone the lighting on the grasshopper and rendered a short anim

Here you can view a short landing animation of the hopper: (bink executable movie)

The walk cycle is coming along nice (prev anim):

Final render of the hoppers on leaves:

Very nice work on this model, although I'm not to sure about the material you have used for the shell I can see where you are going with it. The assembly of the model is terrific and snaps together perfectly, you have kept true to the original reference image while producing a very imaginative version of the creature.

Excellent job.

07-03-2004, 08:32 PM
excellent modeling. Vey nice work. :)

07-04-2004, 12:29 PM
Nice work. Can we have more views please ?

07-04-2004, 12:50 PM
That second render is awesome, truelly great modeling and lighting.

Top notch!

Man that is SWEEEEET!

I want one for a pet.
How long until they are in production?

Crazzy Legs
07-04-2004, 05:28 PM
they eat up all the vegitation

07-04-2004, 05:34 PM
Excellent subject and really clean modelling.

07-04-2004, 06:58 PM
That is pretty cool. I have been playing around with the idea of robot grasshoppers lately too. I have not modelled any, just been doing sketches.

I like your concept alot.

07-04-2004, 07:21 PM
The modeling on this is awesome, and your lighting makes it even more realistic. IMO, I think it would be even cooler if you added some light/glow to the eyes, but that's just my personal taste.

07-04-2004, 07:45 PM
Yes this is excellent, I love the detail and attention. Is the detail all modeled??

07-04-2004, 08:11 PM
What can I say, it looks great

How did you come up on the idea how it should look, the robot things and stuff, the technical part, what was your reference for that?

And the same thing that I always asks, can you show a low poly model?

07-04-2004, 09:01 PM
amazing attention to detail
my favorite is the camera in the eye. i like how you can see the lenses and iris.

brilliant work

07-04-2004, 10:06 PM
Lovely Work! Gorgeous modeling! Renders are dreamy!
I don't know about anyone else but I am itching to see a wire of this bad boy.

07-04-2004, 11:16 PM
Super :applause:

07-04-2004, 11:24 PM
very nice, good 3d integration with the leaf.

07-04-2004, 11:39 PM
detail on this is great. so intricate. how long do you think before we can see an animation of it? i have nothing else to say, this is amazing work:bowdown:

07-04-2004, 11:52 PM
Astonishing, I absolutely love it. It's definitely best when rendered on the leaf, the parallel highlights the abstract nature brilliantly. I would love to see this animated. ^_^

07-05-2004, 12:11 AM
Good concept :applause:

07-05-2004, 12:17 AM

Imagine a plague of those things... o_O

07-05-2004, 12:34 AM
Very cool close-up in the lab !!
i like the lighting !
Great work !

07-05-2004, 01:15 AM
thx a lot guy!
nice modeling and special thx for the website u offered!

07-05-2004, 01:35 AM
Brilliant idea and even though you're probably not an engineer, the mechanicals seem real enough to me.

07-05-2004, 03:27 AM
Whoa! That's an amazing concept. How long does it take for you to make this masterpiece?

07-05-2004, 03:51 AM
I thought it was very impressive! It would be incredible if companies could actually develop surveilance insect bots like that!

Very nice amount of detail on the hopper, also like the very clean and fresh engineered look! Would love a rendering of a magpie trying to catchi this!!

keep it up! look forward to seeing more of your great work!

07-05-2004, 03:57 AM
Could we PLLLLLEAAAASE get a larger render of the first render? I want to update my desktop goodness. :D

07-05-2004, 04:26 AM
how about you stop posting pictures? hehhe, trully amazong job man... really good effect, he has all the properties of a real grasshopper!.. keep it up

07-05-2004, 06:07 AM
I wish I could do this...

Amazing job..truly..

07-05-2004, 09:14 AM
Very nice pics :applause:

07-05-2004, 09:20 AM
Wousers, all those reply's! I forgot to check in for 2 days. I'll post wires and more shots later (am at work right now)
Yes, the backgrounds are photos. Since i had not really a good use for it i just made some shots. I have also a small animation lying around. i'll up it tonight.
Thanks for all those thumbs up!:D

07-05-2004, 11:31 AM
Very beautiful returned 3d lumères is very good cheer.

07-05-2004, 12:06 PM
Very Nice I prefer the version where the hopper is on the leaf. It is very close to real. Great work man.

07-05-2004, 01:16 PM
Why do I have this weird feeling that I've seen this image before (the first render)? Have other people seen this elsewhere? Or could tristan_bethe tell if the image has been placed somewhere in the internet?

It could be true because such a wonderful piece of art couldn't have been hidden for a year :D

07-05-2004, 01:56 PM
No déjà vu, maybe it's just a glitch in the matrix :wise:

You're right, i posted it before at

:D Busted:D

07-05-2004, 02:36 PM
wow great pics
i realy like them

07-05-2004, 03:28 PM
Extraordinary work:bounce: ! Awesome lightning ! Great work !

07-05-2004, 04:06 PM
wow!!!! Good job, keep in this way!

07-05-2004, 05:17 PM
Just made a quick gallery with wires larger images:

and a small bink animation of the hopper landing from a jump (8.5 mb) (auto exec)

The technical idea for this hopper was inspired by all those other white plated droids out there. I just build what i thought looked right and looked convincing.

When i started animating (never animated a character in my life -good lesson-) I had to ajust amazingly very little:)

07-05-2004, 05:20 PM
yes! really good job, very original modele in great environement !!

07-05-2004, 05:26 PM
I love it. This is by far the coolest grasshopper I’ve seen. The design is clean and sleek and gives the impression of functionality. Wicked job man look forward to seeing more.

07-05-2004, 07:57 PM
very very nice.. top stuff!

07-05-2004, 11:16 PM
nice modeling. excelent composite.... i love this image...

07-06-2004, 12:02 AM
If you guys follow the links in his post, there are more renderings, including wires.

07-06-2004, 01:13 AM
very good rendering. love the texturing. some matrix elements?

07-06-2004, 01:24 AM
I like it, too. Especially the eyes region and the triangle above is funny, quiet
similar to a customary Nikon :). I appreciate the front and side views the most.

@ jtuulos:
Suppose you've got the grashopper of Oleg Karassev in mind. At least, this
was my first assumption.
This isn't directly intended to lead to any comparison - i just found this an
interesting coincidence, to different approaches.... on the other hand,
noone says: "Didn't I see this before?" if someone comes up with a
bloodthirsty ork.
@Tristan Bethe and Oleg Karassev: I hope you don't mind if I post the other
sole artificial grasshopper here, too.

07-06-2004, 01:44 AM
great mecha design, a bit more details would be awesome man:D

07-06-2004, 02:34 AM
Way to go man on the front page plug. I saw this on splutter fish about 4 months back and instantly loved it was my walpaper for a while (and i almost always stick to my own renders for backgrounds) I was realy happy to see this on front page i couldnt belive when i first saw it that there was no talk here and it was in no galeries so its realy great to see it recognized for the wonderfull image it is. The design of it is just briliant. I would venture to say the best insect mech ive ever seen And up there with the best mechs just because the briliance of the design and render clean affective (no miscelaneous parts like rocket boosters and that litlle gizmo that looks kool what ever it is) Very grassshoper like very cool. Great stuff. Congrats.

07-06-2004, 04:29 AM
awsome work:thumbsup:

07-06-2004, 05:03 AM

good good!!

07-06-2004, 05:26 AM
i must say very impressive work ... lovely .... work

07-06-2004, 06:04 AM
The modeling and detail is fantastic, and the rendering is very professional. I love robots/machines of all kinds so this is a definite favorite. You kept the proportions and designs very accurate to a grasshopper, and your concept art was drawn/created very well too!

07-06-2004, 06:47 AM
Thanks all!:D
My hopper was made a year ago by now. I saw Oleg Karassev's hopper after i finished with it. I found it amazing that hoppers apperently speak to the imagination of other artist as well. I started out thinking i wanted to make a 'robot thing' then i started browsing trough our image collection ( and the first thing that looked possible to convert to robot was a grasshopper. Any insect could have been done i suppose due to their exoskeleton. A rhino was perhaps also possible i guess.

Oleg Karassev's hopper looks so much more complex, i really like it!

07-06-2004, 09:13 AM
:scream: wow very great

07-06-2004, 09:15 AM
i almost thought that first picture was your CG almost crapped myself good thing i read the post ;) i love it great work on the eyes alot of detail

07-06-2004, 09:38 AM
jaw dropping stuff .
congratulation for the front page ..well deserved !!! :applause:

07-06-2004, 11:28 AM
Just in a technical sense ... is this grey work piece on top of the abdomen the replacement of the wings? I wonder if it is possible ... in an aesthetic sense ... to create them with a material similar to that translucent skin of original wings.
What about a carbon fibre mat for the thorax?
Either it increases the technical authenticity or it destroys the clean look - I don't know.

07-06-2004, 02:48 PM

07-06-2004, 03:11 PM
thats a nice 'camera lens' look you got for the eyes. thanks for posting the exploded assembly pics

07-06-2004, 04:11 PM
This is sooooooo kewl !!!!

How much coffee did you drink to make this one ???

the wire shots are amazing ..

I love the close up ..... you can't find anything wrong with this thing..

Top notch mesh and rendering skills ...

07-06-2004, 07:55 PM
Very nice modeling rendering and lighting

Did you make up ионный генератор yourself? Sounds pretty complicated.

07-06-2004, 08:15 PM
Hey Tristan,

Glad to see you here (your site is my favorite photo resource site). :)

That grasshopper is great. I love all the tiny believable details.

07-06-2004, 08:46 PM
How can I do lighting like that? Anyone known some tutorials that can finally teach me how to light things well??

07-06-2004, 09:27 PM
Everything about this work is incredible - the modelling, the texturing, the shading, the lighting, and the rendering all come together to make this a fantastic shot.

The attention to detail is fantastic, congratulations on an amazing piece!

07-06-2004, 10:01 PM
Cool man! Very natural and cute.

Maybe someday we will have a real robot like that^O^.

07-06-2004, 11:01 PM
Great work.

Nice Shading and Lightening.

07-07-2004, 03:34 AM
I think it's Perfect

07-07-2004, 10:03 AM
Heh i have know idea what ионный генератор is. Even when i look at the drawing i can't make out:

I do not know exactly how long i worked on it since it was on and of during last summer. But it took quite long because i made the thing up while i modeled and i did not made sketches. Some things you just think up while drawing. Then again some thing you just not think of while modeling and only while sketching :D

And the hopper is not really finished yet. I am now modeling the leaf and background so i can animate them all.

07-07-2004, 11:39 AM
Heya Burt, good to see you heren as well, small world eh?:D

Will: The lighting in most of my scenes are not that complex. I use the brazil renderer. I usually have the global illumination (GI) on and set to 0.7 then i have one area light (to get those nice soft shadows) set to 0.7.

Then i place a hdr image in the enviroment slot and set the output of that map to something higher than 1 depends on the hdri but often around 4 to 8.

Instead of a hdri i often use a couple of boxes with an brazil utility material on them and place an output map in the color channel and set it something higer than 1. This is so you see the the boxes more white in the reflection than the surroundings (because they all have an illumination of less than 1). This way you fake softboxes that are used by real photographers in meatspace. You can also place an radial gradient on the boxes instead of an output map and set the gradient output higher than 1. This way you can get those soft edges

When i have cpu cycles to spare i'll turn on indirect illumination.

Thats about it, hope it helps

07-07-2004, 11:40 AM
I don't know exactly what you're talking about so if this post is waste, please
ignore it. ионный генератор = ionic generator. Did you model this or is it just this drawing?

Edit: btw, very fruitfull site, tristan! You also accept pictures of people from the net? If so, I've got a few useful things to post (set of dominoes i.e.).

07-07-2004, 12:06 PM
Thanks! Yes we do take image donations. We are bulding an automated system but for now just drop us an email: tothecoolguys at imageafter dot com and we'll tell you where to upload them.

Now we're womewhat on the subject.
We like to make more known among artist. (because we get a huge kick from our stats :D)
Does anybody know who might want to link to us or write reviews etc?

07-07-2004, 04:20 PM
wow, very very realistic

07-07-2004, 08:31 PM
Ill do it during this week because I like big stock archives .

07-07-2004, 09:39 PM
VERY Nice! Really!. The only critique I have is the shadow under it's front-left foot, where it hangs over the edge of the leaf (I assume a left over from post-comp). Otherwise, beautiful render.

07-07-2004, 11:01 PM

It's so perfect.
Are you an engineer or something ?
When i see projects like this it seems to me
it will take me ages to reach such a level of degree :)

07-08-2004, 07:16 AM
No, i am not an engineer but i did look at allot of plastic/metal objects to figure out what shapes and properties real world objects have. If you stick to the shapes and manufactoring limitations of the real world your model is more convincing.

I've redone the lighting on the grasshopper and rendered a short anim

07-30-2004, 09:01 PM
Although i like the original image it kinda nagged me that it was a photo. So i started rendering cg leafs. Now only to find the time to add the 2 together :)

07-31-2004, 03:47 AM
wow thatlt be realy nice. The only problem is now cgtalk/networks has to decide wich one gets front of gallery. Great stuff. It would be cool if you just saw the silouette of half of him but could see the reel head. kinda like those pics of frogs you see backlit or maybe have a bunch of robo hopers with some dof like one huge one in forground one allightle back in siloughete and the heavey lens blur on about 20 in the background. Good luck cant wait to see it.

08-11-2004, 10:26 PM
Hey thats sounds like a cool idea! dunno about the 20 part, dont think my pc would survive :)

08-11-2004, 11:56 PM
hehe, great stuff, good attention to detail.

08-14-2004, 11:56 AM
nice render and ilumination dude....realy like the concept also......cheers

Final render of the hoppers on leaves:
Hey, seems like you linked to an avi instead of the jpeg. Check the link.

08-24-2004, 07:55 AM
Hey thanks for the headsup. That was so weird Because if you copied the url and pasted in your browser it did work...

anyways its solved now.

08-25-2004, 12:31 AM
I am in awe of this model.
Concept is superb, execution is friggin' fantastic, texturing is out the window. It seriously looks like some product being developed somewhere.
*bows down before the Hopper's awesomeness*

08-25-2004, 08:03 AM
Thanks for all the compliments! A great pick me up! :D

08-25-2004, 10:24 PM
my god. And i thought the first one was good. The new render looks awsome. The composition is great and i like the new tone and new eyes. The ilumination and the leaves are great 2. This new image should be plugged and somehow put in the gallery with the old 1. Awsome work.

08-26-2004, 06:52 AM
Thanks! but it's no composition, its all 3D :wise:
They may swap the current image in the gallery with this one, i like this one better as well :)

08-26-2004, 09:39 PM
i meant like place meant of objects. Composition not compositing. Sorry bout the wording.

08-27-2004, 11:06 AM

:eek:My bad, i read it totally spelled it right but i read: compositing. duh -never read post in a hurry.

09-01-2004, 04:43 PM
nice work man!

11-04-2004, 04:32 PM
Man, very good work!
the modeling is nice, the render is nice, the textures, the idea... everything is amazing!

03-17-2005, 10:29 PM
like we don't have enough pestilence in the world, we have to build them now? (just kidding!)would love to see this animated. great work.
