All these good books that i must read!!!

painter / photoshop / 45mins

07-01-2004, 02:15 PM
Hi all
I haven't read this book either, but it is good they have titles in which you can conjure up a scenarios.
15min ink and pen/15min PS

This is my scenario: You are walking through the woods with that little old psychic lady from Poltergeist and she grabs your arm and says 'Oi something wicked this way comes'.
Little do you know this thing is rushing at!

I will edit this later and mention my FAvorites.

07-01-2004, 04:29 PM
Photoshop, 1 hour 40 minutes.

Haven't read this book either, I'm afraid. Science fiction isn't really my bag.

07-01-2004, 05:32 PM
well here's mine...unfortunately i ran out of time!! Also I haven't had the pleasure of reading this book, but i can still take part :bounce:

might be able to do some later

please say if you like it...this is my second wacom drawing, i need encouragement!

Lots more about the book here (

07-01-2004, 06:02 PM
Teom-really nice as usual

DanubuKa- I really like the feeling of movement and the character

drawMonger-Really like the water color feel, did you do that part in painter?

Id really like some critques on this one
about 1 hour and 30 minutes in photoshop.

07-01-2004, 06:28 PM
thebigxer: Looks good, the fuzzy foreground gives it a nice sensation of depth, and the red eyes a good focus. If you want some criticism though, I think it would look better if the horizon was curved the other way, as you are looking up towards the creature. Now it looks a little like it is crawling up from a hole or something.

drawMonger: Scary. Took me a few seconds to see the reflection.

I sort of vaguely remember being a kid and being totally scared of this movie. In retrospect I find it odd now to think that Pam Griere was the witch.. but at any rate I was totally freaked at how it was a Disney production too.

Ever since then oddly enough, I've had an aversion, much like Austin Powers to "Carnies" [little hands... eew].

anyway... Mr.Dark.

I'd like to have had more time to put a detailed carusell in but whatever.. just a sketch.

1.5 hours.
Wacom Tablet 4X5, and mouse

07-01-2004, 07:34 PM
Well, I've never seen the movie and I've only read the first chapter of the book (if that) so I don't entirely know what it's about. This is just what naturally comes to mind when I think of the title.

Painter. Approx. 2.5 hours.

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES; I took this photograph of my backyard through a glass window and this is what I got! I cropped it and used the PS Watercolor filter on it. It took only a few minutes. I call it Werewolf's Dream. Now I'll have nightmares again tonight. Eeks!

07-01-2004, 08:14 PM
missed a couple, argh I am far too busy. I wish I had more time for this. Maybe I'll suspend my study for a few months to master the techniques some more.

anyhoo... I read the summary and made this. Seems to be a cool book to me.

30 minutes, photoshop & wacom

07-01-2004, 09:12 PM
In Boston, the word "wicked" is slang for "very". So I'm thinking Something Wicked Awesome This Way Comes, or Something Wicked Big This Way Comes. I'll keep you posted how this all turns out. Ladycrowe - I think your character has that perfect air of mystery that fits the story well. Nice job.

"I don't care Jesse, that’s not proper English"

07-01-2004, 10:02 PM
Lots of great posts. I read about the book, so I'm shooting for "close to topic" on this one. I saw something about a wicked carnival, so here's a wicked carnival game. JW Gacy was referenced for the clown face.

Drawn and base colored in Illy 10, detailed in PS7, 'bout 2 hrs. Good times.

Awesome PC!

07-01-2004, 10:27 PM
Mine for today.

PS & penpointer 2 H

About 45mins/Painter/Wacom with reference. Tough one this, went with the book cover look again but havent read the book, found this about Mr Dark & went from there.

"Mr. Dark - The major evil character in the book, Mr. Dark is the Illustrated Man. He is covered in tattoos and each tattoo allows him to exert some power over the figure that is represented. He feeds on pain and destruction and wants nothing less. Mr. Dark is afraid of nothing except the good that Charles Halloway uses to defeat him. He is tremendously strong and intimidates people, inspiring fear when he wishes to. The freaks at the carnival are completely within his power, and he uses both manipulation and force to bend people to his will."

PowerChild - looks great
Scott Harris - haha like it
ladycrowe - nice expression
lthebigxer - like the texture of this
TeoM - nice take on the subject
grouse - coming along, keep going

Eeks! PC has tapped into my fear of clowns! That's perfect PC!

07-01-2004, 11:16 PM
Hello everyone, this is my first wacom produced (got it today) image ever, with PS. It took me about 1.5 h.

ladycrowe, Goblin King, Biped and Kieronh, I really like your work.

07-01-2004, 11:22 PM
not really sure how long this thing took me, i kept re-doing bits, its a bit sloppy (got a bit tierd etc etc - no excuse but anyway..)

07-01-2004, 11:29 PM
Ahhhhhh, I take way too long in shading, I need pointers on speeding up on shading in photoshop. Any tips?

Adobe Photoshop - 3 hrs! (Gack!)

Oooo, there's so nice entries.

LadyCrowe, your entry was uber... wicked. It was really well done, and the character design was super. Is that based on the movie, or a personal interpretation of the book/character?

Garma, I really like yours too.

Whhheeeeee, post more, post more, I wanna see.

07-01-2004, 11:30 PM

took me a little more than an hour. first entry! :D painter7

07-01-2004, 11:50 PM
Bout' halfway through I lost focus but here is the end result.
Sketchbook Pro, Intuos2, 4hrs.

07-01-2004, 11:52 PM
Thanks for the crtique Teom. I sort of wanted it to look like it was crawling out a hole but I do agree it would probably look better if the horizon was titled the other way.

07-02-2004, 12:13 AM
Thanks for those who have commented on my sketch...i'm learning a lot from this great group :)

thebigxer wrote: Really like the water color feel, did you do that part in painter?

I use the acrylics brushes and then the blenders (mostly pointed stump) over the top.

Biped: LOL!!
PowerChild: that's Wicked!!

07-02-2004, 12:41 AM
Im not going to be able to participate in this one either but great work everyone!

I love teknotetek83's!

Powerchild, yours is awsome!

paemrI's is just about as scary as they get!

07-02-2004, 12:50 AM
Erm removed link

07-02-2004, 01:03 AM
Thanks for the compliments guys. (and sorry to scare you nilk! :argh: )

There were a lot of good submissions this time around too.

This is really helping me experiment with techniques. I'm out until tues, which is a bummer 'cause I'm really gettin' into this. You guys are quite inspiring. Later kids!

(And BiPed- great job again!)

07-02-2004, 01:19 AM
have not read the book... I have no time today midterms!, but I havent missed one day.. sooo here is mine

5 minutes Photoshop.

07-02-2004, 02:08 AM
Great work as usual guys!

Here's mine, a little over 2 hours, technical pencil, then Photoshop for colours - wacom.

Not based on the book, just the title. Enjoy!

EDIT: Spent a bit more time in PS with it, a few overlays, and some fill -> Pattern. Just thought it a bit lacking...

07-02-2004, 03:17 AM
By the hat I'm assuming that's Kylie? :D

07-02-2004, 03:32 AM
Here comes the sun.....tchururururuuuuuu..... oh my... 5 hours to do this piece of (@#$@%&)... anyway...

07-02-2004, 03:51 AM
Took a little timeout to sketch up something. The title was so cool i couldn't resist. Wish i'd thought of something better but i didn't quite have my gamehat on. Went for something wispy and eerie.
Drawn in pen (10 min) and digitally coloured (40 min).

Obviously i didn't read the book. Actually caught the movie on tv a long time back but i can't for the life of me remember what it was about. Oh well. I don't think it matters much anyway. Open interpretation for me.

OK. Back to work!

07-02-2004, 04:40 AM
Carnival people ARE evil. I learned that the day I blew $30 trying to throw a whiffle ball into a laundry basket one day at the fair. :scream: Anyway, here's mine:

About 3 hours in Photoshop.
We live just down the road from a fairgrounds. Every Fall the ferris wheel is the first thing up. That part of the picture was easy. :D

mahir - Nice ! Looks like Kabuki.
Dargon - I see seams. There's something "false" looking about her. (not your pic, which is great. Just her. ;) )
Sagi - Reminds me of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Biped - Love it. Will these guys be recurring characters or is this just a phase you're going through?
PowerChild - Twisted. And well done, too!

07-02-2004, 04:57 AM
here's another take on the topic :p
30-45mins? painter 7

07-02-2004, 05:13 AM
Dargon:Great work !

Ilikesoup:he he just a phase I guess.but u newer know.

07-02-2004, 05:33 AM
Cool work so far :). I like this topic because it gives me a chance to try to draw a dragon...unfortunately, I blew the paint job on this guy :(. About 2 hours in photoshop.

07-02-2004, 06:01 AM
^^^^love the fire, looks neato.

07-02-2004, 06:26 AM
Having some problems posting my sketch. I did it another day but now it won't let me post. What gives?

Any thoughts....admin?

07-02-2004, 06:33 AM
Sorry, I know I refreshed my browser but now just saw my post. Guess I thought the pic would be up this time. Guess I need more posts to be like all the rest of ya and see the sketchs in the browser and not just a link.

07-02-2004, 08:27 AM
What a great topic!

You could say:

"It's like... totally wicked and gnarly, dude!"

1 and ½ hours in PS with intuos2® It's a silly mish-mash of styles but I had fun with it!

More than early this time.
Hands up all who love the cliche [how does one do accents?]

07-02-2004, 10:36 AM

I think I've been watching too much acme cartoons in my life O_o

Uniball pen on copying paper for lines, colour and texture in Photoshop, about an hour. Ya know that trick with blending in a texture to break up the smoothness of photoshop really works, it's like pretending you use textured paper :P

07-02-2004, 12:11 PM
i dont know .. just went with the title .. about 50 min, wacom ps 5 ... i know, its just crap ... still tryin to learn ..

07-02-2004, 02:31 PM
As with all good cartoons <<ellipsis>> I'm dying to know how he escapes, jawine <<interrabang>>

07-02-2004, 07:56 PM
I'm assuming my image didn't show up?

07-03-2004, 03:21 AM

Well, I've been playing the home game (lurking) for a little while, and figured I might as well post... This is waaay late.

2.5 hrs in Photoshop with Wacom tablet. (1.5hrs drawing, 1hr second-guessing myself). Lot's of issues with the lighting, etc. but fun to do.

Thanks to all for the inspiration. I've been trying to get back to drawing for a while and now I've finally got some incentive.

I'm learning a lot already.

07-03-2004, 06:38 AM
Argh! My topic and I missed it! (Having new carpet installed in my house and I was without PC for a day. Felt cut off from the world)

Great work everyone.
