06-24-2004, 01:26 PM

First of all we should dedicate a section of the Gallery just for your works, second, could you PLEASE post a larger image? The amount of detail screams for it!
Sorry i can't critisize, i'm just a puny fanboy in this case!

Awesome, great detail, wish i could do that. :buttrock:

06-24-2004, 05:20 PM
Just to note something that some people may not have understood. The images Sormann posts are from an animated film, they may have the detail of a well made 3D illustration that someone would have worked for months on, but they are just a tiny part of the whole thing. It makes me think that Sormann is a disquise name for a whole team of 3D artists! :)

06-24-2004, 05:23 PM

Perfect colors and designs!! As always, a masterpiece!!

06-24-2004, 05:30 PM

Bigger Version, even a little bit more colorful :)

06-26-2004, 01:16 PM
Absolutely stunning work

06-26-2004, 01:17 PM
Hey Sormann, really great work. Looking forward more and more to your short. Do you have any deadlines to work to or are you just doing it in your own pace?
I think the image would be more impressive with more reflection on the metal parts. I'm not sure if you have any at all really, but I understand it is for an animation so maybe it's too expensive renderwise.

arno barbo
06-26-2004, 01:33 PM
it realy seems to have been painted! Simply perfect!:buttrock:

06-26-2004, 01:43 PM

06-26-2004, 02:09 PM
Beautiful!!! As always :) Not much more to say...

06-26-2004, 02:18 PM
great work!!!

06-26-2004, 02:30 PM
Beautiful concept and render. Although it looks more like a Lion Fish than a Barracuda. ;-)

Is that a matte painting in the upper right? I don't see any corresponding geometry in the wireframe. But then again I do see what could be bounding boxes.

Looks like Maya from the Wireframe screen grab. But just for the record, since some use multiple packages, what software was used for modeling, texturing and rendering?

06-26-2004, 03:02 PM
Awesome work! :bounce: The front of the ship reminds me of Jabba's sail barge from ROTJ.:applause:

06-26-2004, 03:08 PM
WoW! The amount of detail lends itself to so much intrigue, without being overkill. wonderful...

06-26-2004, 03:08 PM
i'm loving it :D :applause:

06-26-2004, 03:33 PM
How about even BIGGER? :P

Like...1280x1024? =) You'd make my desktop very happy!

06-26-2004, 03:35 PM
when i saw the small thumbnail on the frontpage i thought... "o... o... mr. sormann is showing us something really good again" - and i was right.

you should start some fan club, sormann ;)
pro stuff as always. nothing to crit.

what is your target resolution?
and what about the deadlines? :)
do u have any small home-made renderfarm?

keep us stunned... forever :)

06-26-2004, 03:40 PM
Amazing work

06-26-2004, 03:57 PM
Great concept!

06-26-2004, 04:00 PM
You Rock !!!

06-26-2004, 04:06 PM
that's frikking brilliant! Nothing to crit. Also those characters looks pretty damn cool, any chance to see some close ups of them?

06-26-2004, 04:11 PM
Damn it, more! I want MORE.

Please show concepts and wires and tell us the process of how you got
to this stage.

I would be interested in knowing how long it took etc. For me, a piece like
this would probably take 4 solid months of spare time work.

Totally dig the Themepark world thingy. Well impressed.

06-26-2004, 04:36 PM
Great work! We need a 1600x1200 or greater image for my background :)

06-26-2004, 05:13 PM
This is awesome. Suberb Detail
Somehow reminds me of Last Exile

06-26-2004, 05:22 PM
Outstanding lighting! Great desing and quality!

what is the polycount of that???? Can you tell me your hardware configuration?

06-26-2004, 05:24 PM
Very Nice!

Look at all the lights! What is the render time on this baby?

06-26-2004, 05:29 PM
very nice modeling and lighting, cool work!

keep up!

06-26-2004, 05:45 PM
Thanks for all your feedback, and thanks for putting me on the frontpage:)

Rivendale: No I dont have really deadlines, I created a rough plan for the creation of my shortfilm project, but to be honest, I just do the assets that interrests me in the moment...

Chikega: The name is not really final, I will think about it later...its more a working title in the moment...You are right it doesnt look much like a barracuda

The Part of the outside in the upper right is not really a matte painting, its a backround plane in the Background scene. I rendered it seperatly and mapped the rendering on the background plane to save rendertime and have better control over the lighting.

I use maya for all my work

Blacknoise: My target res is PAL in the moment.

Stayinwonderland: It took me roughly 5 weeks/ 2-3 hours a day
Concept artwork can be found here:

06-26-2004, 06:12 PM
amazing~ :buttrock: :buttrock:
stare at it for couple minutes, what the detail~

you got it

06-26-2004, 06:18 PM
Great work! My only crit is the backgorund - I think it's too bright. It just doesn't look so far to be so bright. :)

06-26-2004, 06:30 PM
Wow, this is the greatest work i've ever seen! PLEASE render us a Version in 1280x1024 or greater :).

06-26-2004, 06:59 PM
You're work is absolutely rediculous...I'm still waiting anxiously for the film...

06-26-2004, 07:03 PM
What can I say other than SWEET!

06-26-2004, 07:05 PM
Terrifically individual style, great modelling, lighting, texturing and er....everything, Michael :)
Just shows what one man can achieve with his own creative abilities and knowledge of his software package of choice :D

'specially appreciate the quote about 'asset management' ;)
Great stuff, and entirely inspiring!

06-26-2004, 07:35 PM
How much polygons has that scene? And, whitch programm ... and how long did you render... Very kind from you when you could answer thease questions :).

06-26-2004, 08:18 PM
Amazing work, as always! I'm really impressed - great job!

06-26-2004, 08:24 PM

06-26-2004, 10:33 PM
Amazing !!! Your home page is fantastic as well...very inspiring ! Keep images coming...

06-26-2004, 10:56 PM
Simply Amazing work!!! :applause:

What inspiration!!!

06-26-2004, 11:42 PM
Really awesome image. It was mentioned earlier, the upper right corner seems a bit off. The bright glare/oversampling seems to barely effect that little zeppelin. Maybe the zeppelin isn't in the light sources rays?...that doesn't seem obvious to me if that is the case. Aspiring work! Kudos!

06-26-2004, 11:48 PM
simply beautiful! no words.

06-26-2004, 11:50 PM
That is truly phenomenal. The details to the textures, and the lighting are incredible!

06-27-2004, 12:06 AM

06-27-2004, 12:28 AM
WOW! niely modeled

06-27-2004, 01:00 AM
OH.....*pause*.......MY.......*pause*.....Giddy......*pause*.....GOD! . . . .THE DETAIL ! ! ! ! !THIS HAS TO GET A DETAIL AWARD OR SOMETHING!

06-27-2004, 01:04 AM
This is insane. I mean.. Wow.

06-27-2004, 01:45 AM
wow really cool!!!

I counted a lot of light, how many lights are in the scene?
can't wait to see a bigger image!
Time for me to take a look at your website

06-27-2004, 01:50 AM

06-27-2004, 02:21 AM
WOoo hooo....

COOOL ...

06-27-2004, 03:01 AM
It was mentioned earlier, the upper right corner seems a bit off. The bright glare/oversampling seems to barely effect that little zeppelin. Maybe the zeppelin isn't in the light sources rays?...that doesn't seem obvious to me if that is the case. Aspiring work! Kudos! I think its due to the relative brightness of the different parts... what i mean is the foreground is bright... then the mid layer is darker then the back layer is brighter. so its bright, dark, bright. sort of muddies the image and confuses the eye a little. But the image is still awesome.

06-27-2004, 03:49 AM
Very inspiring piece...Thank you

06-27-2004, 03:50 AM
I love it! I like this style of scene. Kind of "Steam-Punk".

The only caveat I have is that the image needs some big-breasted women pulling the ship. "CG ain't CG without big breasted women!"

J/K, of course. It's Exposé material!

06-27-2004, 04:30 AM
Now if somebody put up a poll about which are the most inspiring images that make 3d artists (especially newbies) trying harder and be more creative, i would definitely choose many of those of Theme Planet. They have a warmth and style and depth you just don't find elsewhere. I'm not the type of person to praise other peoples work so much. I would rather prefer them to be humble and down to earth artists rather than proud and arrogant because of their talent. But i think Sormann deserves a lot of thanks for what he is doing, because through his passion and dedication, he helps a lot of people to become more creative and more passionate, by seeing how far this art can go. Showing examples like these, is much more helpfull than a thousand of boring tutorials...

06-27-2004, 07:34 AM
first of all choice work, love your stuff.

only crit is the top right corner, the perspective is all off, if your looking up at the ship and roof, you shouldnt be able to see the horizon.

06-27-2004, 07:45 AM
Thanks again guys..:)

sergage: The back is brighter because it was important for me to sepereate the foreground optically from the background, maybe the env fog is a bit too strong..maybe i will tweake that slightly...

Littleiuk: The polycount is 248 220 .Additionally I have a lot of nurbs surfaces for curved elements, dont know the polycount of these exactly.
Rendertime on my new:D computer: about 3 minutes.

Goldenarm: Its true, There is a light mimic the sunlight and the Zeppelin is affected by it, theoretically but obviously not enough... the rest of the brightness is a post process glow on the background layer, the Zeppelin is part of the foregound scene, .

weiper: The number of lights in the main scene is 24 , the overall cuont used for this scene in all layers is (roughly) 50

06-27-2004, 07:53 AM
Dear Sormann,

I really like your work, It's really of the big art

I know that you have already published a bigger version for the desktop of PHP.
But I would like to know yew you could not publish a version bigger version in 1152 x 864 or 1600 x 1200 ?
It's for my desktop.

Still thank's for the quality of your work, it's really really great !!!!

Continue to dream about us with your creations which are fabulous.

Thank's for all, Roderizator.

Thanks :)

Rodarizer: The biggest rendering I did of this pic until now can be found at:

Baby: Thanks... But to be correct: Igor is not present in this pic...(He works for mad constructor deepdown in the planets core :) The guy you see here is "Rollercoaster operator" another green character, but hes an cameleon and igor is a grasshopper :) Mad constructors humble assistant(not present) Roller coaster operator (present in this pic) ... He and two brothers of him, looking pretty much the same :)

06-27-2004, 06:57 PM

I’ve seen some of your work on your website and I can say without a shadow of a doubt YOU must be the most talented 3D artist I have ever seen! :buttrock:

I could go on and on about your talent all day, but I have to stop at some point because its depressing at the same time to know that I will never even be half as talented as you! lol

Hey Sormann,

That is alot of work, alot of good work.
Great Texturing and lighting

Is this your full time job? Or do you have a industry job and also work on this at home. . . . . cuz how do you find the time?
Maybe you have an army of space monkeys helping you out!

Great work, waiting to see more.

06-29-2004, 05:13 PM

06-29-2004, 10:09 PM

Personnaly I don't care about the how you did it stuff....

I just want to thank you (again) for doing and sharing your work, you prove that this king of (huge) idea can be handle by a single motivated person

You have an incredible modeling and animation skill, that 's the more important, seeing something that make me think, whaooooo 3d is cool, there are beautiful people around here, we don't work in a factory, have dream, realised it, well carry on, and show us more....................;

I love it. The style is awesome, great detail and the textures have that aged look bronze look I so adore. There's a lot of details in the background, but the composition and lighting really draws your eyes onto the ship. Very very very cool.

06-30-2004, 03:29 AM
love your style. Your work is always inspirational.

06-30-2004, 03:20 PM
