View Full Version : character : "troopers" Mecha

06-23-2004, 12:39 PM

My new personal works realised with 3dsmax5, vray for rendering and displacement , shake 2.5 for compositing and painting.

Head design inspiring of nathan campbell (spinefinger )

This "illustration" defined for me a seek environment
(not style of the mecha) of my future short film in preparation.:)

xavier : merci,

06-23-2004, 03:21 PM
yeah, really great work...especially on the textures.
one thing that bothers me is the position of his left arm (good to see in the clay render) May be its just me..but i think it looks a bit strange
Did you use HDRI or just white skylight?

ps: 4 stars ;)

06-23-2004, 03:53 PM
awesome. i like materials so much.

06-23-2004, 04:16 PM
Great job, 10 points to the carter and it's texture, and 10 points too at the envoirment.

06-23-2004, 06:04 PM

 3 stars only? am i dreaming? This work is awesome! I realy like the posing of ur character! It give him, despite of the fact that is only a mecha, a lot of life. He seems to be lost in a hostil environelent, wild jungle. He may try to find a way to get out! I realy enjoy the design of it. Exellent work, first rate!
:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

06-23-2004, 09:05 PM
wow that is some cool stuff. i can only wish to see more of that enviroment.
And the characters wear and tear is just amazing.SWEET

06-23-2004, 09:13 PM

Great job. Modeling, textures, and lighting are all excellent.

*PLUGGED* On the front page. Congrats!

06-23-2004, 09:17 PM
awesome image - but I think the texturing could be much stronger on the tree if the grain followed the flow of the forms rather than just vertically... but that probably means some UV texture mapping work.. yum..

06-23-2004, 09:22 PM
the armor is so cool, it looks like he has been in that jungle for a long time, and I love the light. I can only imagine what the animation would be like.

06-23-2004, 09:29 PM
Great work with the modeling, lighting, composition, and ESPECIALLY the texure work.

An overall amazing image... going into my inspiration folder!

06-23-2004, 09:32 PM
I love your trees and plants... The mech is also so well done. You've made one of my favorite cgtalk images! It inspires me so much. Well done! I wish I had something to criticize to help you, but all I can say is that I love it.

06-23-2004, 09:33 PM
Amazing stuff.

06-23-2004, 09:48 PM
Image link is dead - looks like you've exceeded your bandwidth.

06-23-2004, 09:48 PM
Yeah Dare !! impressive work !!
very nice model !

06-23-2004, 09:51 PM
wonderful textures..lovely mood setting

06-23-2004, 09:52 PM
Anyone up for hosting a mirrior of this? I'm very interested to see this piece.

06-23-2004, 10:02 PM
Well done DARE!!!!!

06-23-2004, 10:03 PM

06-23-2004, 10:18 PM
Very nice. However, the character completely blends in with the background. (A good test of your values in any medium is to squint at the image. If everything blends together, then there is not enough contrast between foreground and background.) I would seperate it with some rim-lighting. Nice job overall though! :)

06-23-2004, 10:23 PM
Looks AWESOME!! The environment is kickass, and I liked a lot the mechanical design...The rifle is really good (is this rifle that you mentioned on my thread?).

Keep it up!!

06-23-2004, 11:16 PM
yes..mon pote ca tue!!!!!! bravo;o)

06-24-2004, 02:28 AM
This is amazing! how long did you take to create this masterpiece? Frontpage!

06-24-2004, 06:59 AM

really ...well done friend!

We hope in some animations now !!!

06-24-2004, 08:07 AM
excellent textures! really cool how he's camoflauged into the environment. gr8 modelling.

06-24-2004, 08:24 AM
Very Very nice.

06-24-2004, 09:50 AM
I usually don´t bother to post comments, but this is just too much...
Please let me build you a temple where I can worship you and your art...
I´ll give u my wife for a tutorial on that image ;)

Anyway, (My Lord) is the tree covered by a singel texture? if so then it must be like 5x5k in size. Handpainted or photo?

5 stars from me...

06-24-2004, 10:15 AM
impressive as usual dare

colors of the robot and the environment are maybe a bit too similar so the eye is a bit lost...
otherwise modeling, texturing, lighting and composition are very interesting !! :buttrock:

06-24-2004, 11:18 AM
amazing. great render.

06-24-2004, 11:21 AM

sorry for my bad english
ric :merci ric:beer:

tricky3d : you are right, i have a little problem with stronger texturing of the tree.

daxt : thanks, i will try a short film of 5 minutes with this style of render

nzo : thaaanks man, i wait your next pict:beer:

zegritch: yeees, tu as raison, j'ai fait ca un peu a l arrache pour l uvw de l'arbre:D

The_Liberator and Spiff vbmenu_register("postmenu_1408277", true); :humm, i like the camouflage effect, i precisely wanted this effect of correspondence between the foreground and background:)

FaustoDeMartini: thanks very much my friend,
yes is this rifle that i mentioned on your thread, i prefer your futuristic gun:)
same if my design is voluntarily more realistic.

sly : merciiii ma caille

cycom: i worked about 1 month above from time to time.

shoglic : thanks so much:) a tutorial for this image...why not.
The texture of tree is a combination with two textures layer, after i paint a little over in 2d with shake 2.5 .

06-24-2004, 03:29 PM
shading test

06-24-2004, 08:45 PM

06-25-2004, 12:57 PM
I love !
especially the lighting...
of course great modeling/texturing and image composition.

06-25-2004, 12:59 PM
very good.cool

06-25-2004, 01:06 PM
the head reminds me of a spinefinger robot

very nice modelling job and I like the jungle environment too... nice atmosphere

06-25-2004, 01:23 PM
you should definetely change the lighting! the character is totaly lost in the jungle - there arent any contrast there (deep forests are full of shadows and lightened areas - you could use it wisely so you char pop out).

Another problem are trees and its texture, when I look on the lianas (dont know the right word in english - something like roots in the air:) the flow of the UVs is not correct - they are 90 degrees rotated so they look unnaturall.

This pic has potential but need some work.

Keep up the good work!

06-25-2004, 01:26 PM
Really really Nice!
Maybe effectively a little change for the lights could be interesting.

06-25-2004, 01:43 PM
he's like a scout soilder, very cool. Have to agree with the others about him blending a little too much with the back ground. Awesome picture. Maybe just requires a bit of of a value and intensity change somewhere on either the robot or the background. Othere than that, it's sweet.

06-25-2004, 02:23 PM
kick ass man...
i love your animation
its way a head:scream:

06-25-2004, 02:43 PM
ohhhh!GREAT! MARVELOUS! Mister DAREONER, your mecha is terribeule!!!

06-25-2004, 02:48 PM
Wow, I'm very impressed with the texture the model, and theenviornment sourounding th model. You should be pleasd with your accompishment at hand. I know I would be if I completed a work of art of that calibre. I will be there soon...................soon.

Awsome job

06-25-2004, 02:55 PM
Great image and brilliant design, and fantastic textures too!! it is a really expectacular design , congratulations

06-25-2004, 03:08 PM
 wow man that realy is awsome, the texture is amazing throughout

06-25-2004, 03:11 PM
awsome work!

06-25-2004, 03:24 PM
Keep the good work Dare

06-25-2004, 03:36 PM
awesome work, congrats

06-25-2004, 03:37 PM
Great Picture. Awesome textures! Thanks for my new wallpaper.

he's like a scout soilder - lestdog
I got the impression the robot is female looking.

06-25-2004, 04:00 PM
lisbor :"you should definetely change the lighting"
this lighting is my artistique choice, i precisely wanted this effect of correspondence between the foreground and background:)

so several people say the same thing, perhaps I will test another version.
thank you for your opinion.

Riddick: merci beaucoup riddick

olijosman: yééé man, thanks so much, i reallly like your artwork to.

jalingo : good comments, it's a wife, man or children, maybe a dog:) they are these three vision which returns...me i try to design a androgyne robote, functional.

06-25-2004, 04:01 PM
Great job! Like the texturing specially. So as lighting. Wish you good luck for your animation.

06-25-2004, 04:26 PM
This is great work!

06-25-2004, 04:31 PM
Very cool image... the intensity of the tree texture and lighting on the tree tends to make the eye lose focus on the char though... nice work!

06-25-2004, 04:41 PM
it's a wip render, so a test before my final image

on this version, the colors of mecha is different of background:)

06-25-2004, 04:55 PM

06-25-2004, 05:09 PM
CBAS; Meiogirl :
yes , the head inspired by spinnefinger, please read my first post:) vbmenu_register("postmenu_1410642", true);

06-25-2004, 05:11 PM
damn great~~~~

06-25-2004, 05:47 PM
Man thats really cool liked it a lot the textures are really nice like your style too, the scene feeling is great.

06-25-2004, 05:49 PM
Amazing work ! i'm really impressed by quality of this image .

Ca déchire ! ;)

06-25-2004, 05:50 PM
lighting looks much more artificial on that render...like if it was shot in a studio with spots...
the mood is interesting though, but I kinda liked the first one more...

BUT that depends on your story, the atmosphere you seek for the whole movie etc... just speeking for an illustration, have no idea what kind of render you want to come up with in the short...I guess it was intentional
so I've got no worry about the final result in your short, I know you're still experimenting.

can't wait to see it !! :buttrock:

06-25-2004, 06:17 PM
rept0r : thanks so much, i do have time to tell you "congratulation" for your final image machineflex challenge, great stuff !

Falfa : merci beaucoup.

06-25-2004, 06:18 PM
That is real skill on display in those images.

06-25-2004, 07:40 PM
DAREONER, ASA dude great work. admirable, make sure to tell us when your done with the animation..

PS: I can't see you site only the splash page?

06-25-2004, 07:54 PM
hanzo : thanks to appreciate the futur of this short film ,i try to update when a finish the scenario:)

i don't understand why you don't see my website, so it's operational:sad:

06-25-2004, 07:59 PM
I think that the image is fantastic. But I do agree with others that have mentioned the bark direction on the tree. To me it is a glaring defect. The texture itself is amazing, but I recommend spending more time placing it. It kills the whole image for me, especially on the larger size.
On another note, the choice of lighting and compostion is quite nice.

WhItE CoFfEe
06-25-2004, 08:21 PM
Kick ass! I'd like to see the short fillm.

06-25-2004, 08:28 PM
Great job, he reminds me of the FLCL robot, http://www.catsuka.com/interf/gengal/sketches/flcl/FLCLism29.jpg

06-25-2004, 08:29 PM
Very good job:)

06-25-2004, 08:44 PM
dmcgrath : thanks for your analyse
for the uv, yes i know i have a problem on one branch, i try to finish a another version later.

06-25-2004, 09:35 PM
my favorite part are the red X's

06-25-2004, 10:16 PM
that looks great, but there are a few things bothering me. someone might have already said something about this, but the texture on the tree looks like its just cylindrically mapped onto it, i was noticing lines of the texture on the branches in front lining up with the branches in back, it looked a bit odd. another thing was the color scheme, while i do like it a lot, i think the character could stand out a bit more, it was kind of hard to see at first. other than that everything else is top notch.

06-25-2004, 10:39 PM
That robot rocks.

06-25-2004, 11:44 PM
you've aspired to inspire me :D
love the background and character intergration. its all very easy to look at and well done. congrats!

06-26-2004, 12:19 AM
Great work man! Keep it up...

I can almost hear all those jungle like sounds while looking at your picture..n1!

06-26-2004, 12:21 AM

06-26-2004, 07:57 AM

06-26-2004, 08:27 AM
mirrors pleaaaaase - all I see is that goddam red X

06-26-2004, 08:38 AM
amazing texture work Dareoner...chapo !!!

06-26-2004, 09:48 AM
very nice work DARE I am too late but I am here to congratulate another great work from you (t'as vu comme j'assure en anglais ma caille !:) )!!!!

but it's a grear job !!!

06-26-2004, 12:03 PM
Whoa! That looks great! 5 stars from me!

06-26-2004, 12:06 PM
Just a message to congratulate your stuff !
Amazing piece of art. i hope soon to see your movie.
i liked a lot the details renders you've done for your lighting tests.
i'm a fan.
Could you detail the number of textures, polycount, computer, time rendering ?
i hope you have not said yet, it would mean that i've not read entirely the topic :)

06-26-2004, 12:49 PM
great work man, awesome model, excelent enviroment but the composition is kinda hard for the eye, you need to do something with the background like, darken it a bit or something, so the mech can jump out a little.

06-26-2004, 01:17 PM
keep up the good work:thumbsup:

06-26-2004, 05:26 PM
encore bravo!

06-26-2004, 06:26 PM
I just would like to say that this is very nice work.....the surfacing on your Mecha is superb, I myself am trying to capture that same dull painted metal surface, and it is not easy I know.....well done, and my opinion is not to change the enviroment, I think it fit's perfectly this charecter...

harnelbe : thanks very much

the number of textures is : 60
polycount : in low version 300 000
time rendering for a 2k: 3 h for tree and displace
10 mn for robot

very inspiring m8
well thought out and great modelling and texturing

I'm a sucker for any picture with a jungle/tropical setting, so I'd love this one even without the (well-designed) mecha. It instantly made me think of Predator, if that movie had robots (although the acting was pretty robotic:D ). My only crit is the bamboo in the background, it doesn't really seem like it should be there. That's just my personal opinion (I'm probably wrong), they're not distracting or anything.

thanks for your support:)

rancor: for metal shaders......just one mapping in diffus canal, just 3 light, i work after with the compositing (level, multipass, crossover, sharpen ect...) so for a animation i use a classic layer of reflexion, the good tutorial of wiro is the same i think.

06-29-2004, 09:25 AM
Incredible! I love the concept of the mecha... The coposite is very well done. I think that this is definetly a front page material. Great work with the textures of the robot. They really get the feeling of paint over metal.

I originally posted this work on the front page, but your server could'nt take the load, so we had to remove it. I will look into getting this image into the official gallery. IMO it deserves to be there. It might be until after SIGGRAPH before it gets put there as our admins are very busy with the show.

Have a great day!

07-30-2004, 05:48 PM
you rock dave !!

07-31-2004, 05:44 AM

08-09-2004, 07:06 AM
I wonder why this one only got 3 stars.
I would give it 4.

08-09-2004, 11:32 AM
shaun : thanks, i work actualy for more update

Necksmasher:thanks man, the technique for modeling is "face to face", low poly and subdiv (with max)

Hello DAREONER...........:wavey: ...I wanted to come in and give you two of these for an excellent piece of work.........  ..................The entire scene is full of life and beauty with danger and excitement all in one.Very well done in both beauty and execution.........I look forward to any additions you have planned for this,it will be something to look forward to I am sure, all the best to you and your further creations........I like to believe my french is good, but deep down I know it is not to good.....:) ......SO I leave now with my final thought on this creation of yours........."Fantastique"..................:arteest:

08-16-2004, 10:09 AM
I love it, is the background real or 3d. I am assuming its a real bg and you just comped it behind the 3d character.

You're very talented.

08-16-2004, 12:56 PM

its another incredible work as usual....

08-16-2004, 01:18 PM
Awsome ! really great materials, they look very realistic.

respect !

08-16-2004, 04:13 PM
Great job dude. Love the design.

08-16-2004, 08:41 PM
beautiful work so far Dareoner... don't give up on it yet though.. a few small tweaks may push it into Legend!

perhaps where the paint is worn off you could show a little more scratches... perhaps with a bump and specularity map

08-16-2004, 11:49 PM
fantastic work. exceptional actually.

in my opinion tho i think a very feint depth of fied to blur out the environment just very slightly would improve it even more. just my opinion.

08-16-2004, 11:51 PM
after another look at the image i take that last comment back.
theres definitely enuff DOF in it already.

congrats on a flawless image.
