12. Underground City :Telemaco ( I just loved his underground canyon. Lots of little details and good composition

13. In the Middle of Nowhere :Scott Harris ( Wonderful concept. The red balloon seems lost or on a profound journey to somewhere only little kids can dream of. I love it!

14. Wannabe I couldn't pick a favorite of these two: Mahir ( & Goro ( Mahir hits you hard with the satire and bonus points go to feeding my sick sensibilities. Goro's sense of humor shines on this one as well with the oxymoron-like character that resembles Catwoman with Mickey Mouse ears. Nice dramatic composition as well.

15. Monster in Disguise : Another tough call ...: Sir Patroclo ( & stephan.s ( Sir Patroclo's is just too adorable to ignore. Mad props for character designs. stephan.s' illustration gets an easy chuckle out of me and the colors are just fantastic!

16. New Frontier : bumskee ( Definately has the best feeling of exploration and new grounds of all the other entries. A lot of skilled illustrations, but this one has the best interpretation of the subject, I think

16.5 Self Portrait : Squee ( : The big head appealled to me (I got a big head too, but not quite as much hair :D )

There were many other great sketches. Good job everyone and thanks to those who have mentioned mine.

Middle of Nowhere - Mathew S - Amazing, hugely vibrant with a great use of color and great viewpoint

There were great submissions in every thread, and I feel bad only picking one. There were about four other really outstanding entries I was considering in each topic, so don't take it the wrong way if yours isn't in here. :)

pluckylump (

Goro (

14 - "WANNABE"
stephan.s (

Sir Patroclo (

bumskee (

bumskee (

P.S. I think we should have "Self Portrait" several times a year.

06 June 2004, 10:28 AM
That was an interesting excerise for me Agent D, I'd never done a self portrait before, even at art school.

06 June 2004, 11:29 AM
Wow! Thanx a lot for those who nominated my humble artpiece. I'm inspired constantly by the quality displayed here. Kirt glad you enjoyed it - your work is awesome and it means a lot you liked my sketch. Flatuloso i haven't read Powers but i've been dying to check it out - heard good stuff about it. And comics have always been a passion of mine (that's the aspiring comic artist part of me surfacing).

Anyway here's my picks (and some honorable mentions):

HM - pluckylump and bumskee

13: "In the Middle of Nowhere" - Telemaco - nice bright quirky style!

not able to make qualified judgements, but these are what I liked personally…

12 Underground city – fav: Goro for his usual great rendering of light. Also liked: Telemaco in my mind really made the city look as though it was a living community. Garma’s first post for the architecture. Pluckylump for great toilet humour!

13 in the middle of nowhere – fav: iamintricate simple but effective, beautiful interpretation of the theme. Also liked: pasto for the expression on the face of the tormented Maya student; Matthew-S ,Goro and Telemaco for style and colour.

14 wannabe – Fav: stephan.s brilliant!!! Also liked: Goro: for his dark hero; Matthew-S for the seemingly random loose strokes that form a great picture; sagi_13 for the b&w wannabe artist self portrait (I know the feeling) simple sketch has a lot of character. Mahir for freezing the expression of the face when the guy realised he couldn’t fly! bumskee for a great interpretation of the topic.

15 Monsert in disguise: Fav: stephan.s for the clever disguise and awesome artwork; Also liked, LSUwest for the clown faces on medusa’s snakes…classic!; pasto for style and colour; Sir Patroclo beautiful shading! Kirt, it must be hard to draw an x-ray but you pulled it off wonderfully.

16. New frontier: Fav: Goro - how do you do it?! Lots of skill and talent no doubt! ; Also liked: Androgs and Pasto for nice mood and good interpretation of the topic; bumskee that is an amazing sketch!!

16.5 Self portrait: Fav: Bumskee for the intense look of an artist at work!; Also liked: SteveV lots of character in your sketch; Kirt, love the expression! Jeroentje for the woodcut style. Agent-D, Goro and Kirt … I think I would recognise you if we crossed paths on the street (however unlikely that would be!)

Really learning a lot from you all. Thanks for comments over the week. Look forward to a good week of sketching!

If Androg's was too late to be counted then i vote Kirt

THAT IS AWESOME!! Goro/Zzacmann/Kirt you guys are always really really good, but Matt had ya on this one :)

WANNABE: Matthew-S
Made in Uterus i love your style man. Flair, that's good stuff! Flatuloso... that ain't right! (it's really good, it just isn't sane.. lol!!) mahir that's goood stuff bud :) Feyshtey i give you runner up on this one, i loved your premise and the drawing itself. Zzacmann/Kirt/MIU/Goro you guys are great artists, ALWAYs consistent. :applause:

Matthew-S that's great! very "Bubba Ho-Tep" (ish). Jiasaer/Goro very cool!
Sir Patroclo that is really really good. MrWyatt you get runner up it's really good.

NEW FRONTIER: Stephen.S (incredible! both are first place winners)
Goro/Dargon would be my second picks, really awesome work guys. Matt-S awesome again! SteveV that's really good. Iamintricate, yes you are, i thought something was wrong with my monitor then i realised it was a .gif that is really cool :)

SELF PORTRAIT: Sir Patrocolo
it was a tossup between Sir Pat/Kirt/Goro. I think Kirt's was the best true to life selfportrait, but i enjoyed SP's approach more. Grouse, that's a really good photo-edit.

06 June 2004, 05:40 PM
Underground City
Winner: zzacmann -- love the colors, and the concept. Dripping with style.
honorables: Kirt and Telemaco. Had to disqualify anybody with an underground hangar for fear of underground Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Safety first!

Middle of Nowhere
Winner: zzacmann -- two great trees in a row! Can't help hearing the "Greatest Adventure" song from The Hobbit.
honorables: Goro, Telemaco.
Above and beyond the call: DanubuKa for painting in acrylics first then scanning (did I read that right??). Nice composition, too!

Winner: flair -- I'm a sucker for a good visual pun. Really went the distance with the background too!
honorables: Sir Patroclo writes great stories for his characters, Mahir's Superman could have been me @ age 5 (shudder), and Ephesus' giant frog looks like he used to be a man and is trying to pretend like nothing's wrong.

Monster in Disguise
Winner: Sir Patroclo -- love the roundness of your characters' faces. BTW, Aliens should have tried a bottle of Sambuca and Tony Bennett music. She loves that.
honorables: Stephan.S, Telemaco (colored candy a nice touch), and Ebola. Mahir's makes me cringe thinking it's a child abuse ad.

New Frontier
Winner: Pasto -- classy watercolor painting. Great concept.
honorables: the sparky had great lines and color, but two suns? Dargon's ships had an interesting wagon train design.

Self Portrait
Winner: Jeroentje -- looks more like an etching than a digital paint.
honorables: Agent D, Kirt, Bumskee. I like the style in Made in Uterus' portrait, but wish the shading was done head to toe.

So much great stuff to choose from, and these topics are great!

06 June 2004, 11:01 PM
These sessions are just getting stupidly better and better!

Underground City : Telemaco (Special Mention : Kirt)

Middle of Nowhere : Goro (Special Mention : Scott Harris)

Self Portrait : Kirt (Special Mention : Sir Patroclo)

06 June 2004, 05:31 AM
Ok I tallied up the votes!
The winners are:

And the winner for the sketch of the week is:

Stephan S

06 June 2004, 06:42 AM

12 : "UNDERGROUND CITY" - Kirt, nice atmosphere and an odd sense of claustrophobia, think it's the lighter colored background...

13 : "IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE" - bumskee, although there were several that suggested the same concept, (at the risk of sounding odd) this is one that spoke to me.

14 : "WANNABEE" - zzacmann, liked the pen and ink style of this, and the expression on the face.

15 : "MONSTER IN DISGUISE" - bumskee, hmm...another of yours, actually this remined me of when I was a kid, used to pass by this tree on my way home from school everyday, it had a patteren of knots that looked just like a face.

16 : "NEW FRONTIER" - Goro, love the colors and lighting, and the way you've suggested large scale tech with just a few brushstrokes.

16.5 : "SELF PORTRAIT" - squee, like the sense of motion in this piece, reminds me of the film "waking life".

really cool ideas, what a great site!

06 June 2004, 07:23 AM
first of thanks for everyone that mentioned my drawings..

Congratulations Stephan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I recall seeing some of your work here on :> good stuff!!

also thanks to those who bothered to mention my work, thanks!

06 June 2004, 08:26 AM
Nice to see this becoming a regular plugged feature.
However, is there anyway you can, from now on, post the winners, or the best ones from each category in this thread?
It can be a bit of a chore flicking through 5 forums with about 6 pages each.
There are some decent pics in there, but some people dont have time to browse through the many pages to find them.

<<<DOH!! I just noticed that the images are on page 3! - soreeeeee!>>>

06 June 2004, 08:39 AM
:applause: :applause: :applause: to all winners and other sketchers. This really is a fun place to be and what a great learning experience.

AndyH has a point, I think.

06 June 2004, 09:43 AM
Congratulations for all the winners, specially for Stephan S, the best of the week indeed.

Thanks to the people who voted for my sketches, I'm truly honored!

It is kinda difficult to browse trough all the forums to review the posts, but it's the only way to go I guess...

Sir Patroclo

06 June 2004, 11:21 AM
Thank you all very much for your votes and feedback! I feel deeply honored. :)
There were so many cool pictures during this week. And I am sorry I wasn't able to vote this time. But my props go out to all the winners and everybody who contributed with real great art. Especially Sir Patroclo (we almost were on a tie in topic 15 :D great stuff!), bumskie (nice moods in your pics!), pasto (style!), made in uterus (Cool ideas! And try using a bit more contrast/valuerange in your pics.), kirt, Ephesus, Dargon, Telemaco, jiasaer, goro ... and all the others I forgot :B

This has become a real great place. And it is still getting better. Hope to see you all soon in the next sketch battles :D

06 June 2004, 11:46 AM

06 June 2004, 12:37 PM
Thnx for the votes everyone! I'm deeply honoured!

The 2D section of cgtalk became really popluar since last year. I remember
the time when 95% of cgtalk was only 3D.

The 2D section of cgtalk became really popluar since last year. I remember
the time when 95% of cgtalk was only 3D.

I think (or I hope) that people are beginning to realize that the fundumentals are the most importat aspect of computer art. If you cannot draw. You cannot be sucessful in 3-D. It is VERY important to keep your drawing skills up. I got "to busy" to draw for a year and I have really fallen behind.

Thats what makes this forum so important, and so wonderful. It's a great way to get with your friends once a day and just draw and have fun. I live by myself hundreds of miles from all of my college friends I used to draw with. But thanks to this forum. I have all new friends to draw with everyday, and Its exciting to wake up everymorning and see a ton of great work and a brand new topic to take a crack at.

Everyone is improving so fast, that I am scared to see the kinda work that will be comming out of all of us 3 months from now! Look out front page, 'cause here we come!

"If you cannot draw. You cannot be sucessful in 3-D. It is VERY important to keep your drawing skills up."

I disagree. I've worked with people who couldn't draw a straight line to save their life but did amazing work in 3d. The mind works different for everyone. Not saying 2D isn't important because it's extremely important. I just think the statement is a bit overboard. :)

To get any kind of recognition on my 1st submission is simply outrageous!

I'm grateful to everyone who voted for me and am glad my little piece had left an impression. I'm definitely inspired to continue participating and growing and learning from all you incredible artists out there. I think the Daily Sketch concept is just wonderful. What better reason to get off my lazy ass and actually exercise my drawing hand and work on something eh? I've always believed that "practice practice practice" is absolutely essential to getting better especially when it comes to drawing/sketching but just never got around to it due either to work or just plain unmotivated. So thanx a lot for starting this forum. Can't promise i'll submit for every title but i'm sure as hell gonna try!

Stephan.S, you deserve every single accolade you get. It's a great piece of artwork and i'm glad it's being seen and enjoyed. Your skills are rad!

I aspire to learn as much as i can, and someday maybe i can be half as good as people like kirt, goro, stephan.s, bumskee, sir patroclo, telemaco etc...

Keep it going guys and keep amazing me!

Congrats to stephan.s for Sketch of the Week!
There are so many great sketches in these catagories, it's a shame that we can't highlight them all. Good job to everyone for making the Daily Sketch inspirational and one of my favorite places to visit on CGTalk.

Booyah! I'm having a nice time looking at the sketches. Sometimes I draw some too, mostly on paper. I do have a wacom but pencil&paper still works best.

It's a shame that Patroclo didn't win a sketch, I read there was a close tie so I'm happy for that. 2D is important indeed, I started to realize that a month ago and now I'm drawing a lot more.

And of course, thank you CGtalk for making this possible.
Thank you RobertoOrtiz for posting the topic every day and counting the votes. That must be a horrible task ;). Keep the good stuff up people, you might see some of my work in the future threads.

LOVE the monster in disguise! The colors work well together - very children's bookish. Awesome!

Wow... Thanks to all the people who voted for me and all the people who mentioned me favorably... never would have imagined it, what with Goro, Kirt and Matthew S tearing it up, OLD SCHOOL. Maybe one of these days I'll remember to do another one...
