View Full Version : Character: Samurai (nearly finished)

06 June 2004, 11:31 PM

I'm searching for serious critics for my current work, a cg-samurai, and I hope I'll get it here! :)
I used 3ds max 6 and Photoshop, rendered with Light Tracer.
I used photo references to create the textures:

The model was done in about 10-15 hours. The hole working time was about 30-35 hours.

It would be great if you could tell me what I should work out more, especially the rendering and shaders. But feel free to critic everything you want.

So, enough for now, here's the picture:

The skin color for the head and the rest of the body are different. The head has more purple, but the body has more orange. Either color correct the texture for the head or the body. The pants are too dark to see any detail. A dark shade of grey would help bring out detail like folds, fabric texture, stitching, and seams.

Or... you could go the other way and make the pants white
keep the belt black ;) and make the letters black.

His skin has a slight plastic or wax look.
Make the light spead out more across
the surface.
More ambient light, less direct light.

Hi Grack.

Very nice..!!
The body is really good.
I am not that happy with the head though, (talking about textures and shader) , the diference in color mentioned before is pretty obvious..

The body is much better, I have some crits to it though, but is mostly regarding to the model.

I find the wrists too wide and plannar.
Seems like is lacking some muscles in the forearm too.
The neck is not quite into proportions with the heand and body yet, find it to wide.
also, the rigs look a little too straight.

After those little things, I find it cool.

Good luck.

Head and neck are a tad too big for his body. His ears are a tad too prominent (size is ok, but they are too outwards -- rotate them and translate them in a tad).
His face does not feel asian, but quite occidental. It isn't much like the reference. The chin is too rectangular, the nose not as wide, the eyes not as bulged, and the model has a more prominent frown (due to the short space between eye and brow).
Wrist (his left, at least) looks also a tad thick for that hand. His thumb could perhaps be a tad shorter, while the other fingers a tad longer (but hard to tell from this view).
As others mentioned, make the head and body's skin color the same. Add some texturing to the specular, particularly on his face, to get some breakup.

It look ok but the fore-arms are not proportionate. I also agree with the comment that arderas and gga posted. ALL in all good conceptual design.

Good luck on finishing it.

I agree with most of the other posts. Also, the forehead seems too square and wide. Try making the head a bit more narrow in the front

Nice, but the head and neck are too big, and the upper arm is too short for his body.

Thanks for the crits, guys!
I will soon work on and change a lot of things. Perhaps you will not be able to identify him later, so be excited... :)

the area around the eyes/forehead almost looks convex to me. i think it needs a nice roundess coming out from the edges of the eyes towars the ear, i never seen anyone with a almost flat forhead, the body looks good, just i think people would look at the face most.

post some more pics of different angles, harder to critique from one angle

His left form arm looks out of porportition, but his right isnt so bad.

As said head to big and neck, I find his eye are just a little to hi up or upper head not high enough.

Are you trying to totally replecate the photos are just make a awesome model, asian people tend to have their eyes higher up but the model looks almost like a european/asian so the facial porportions will change a lot.

your mapping work is awesome, my only gripe is that the skin tone of the head doesn't blend with the body. It could be my mistake and only be the lights, I can't tell everything else is great.

Hello again,

thanks for replies so far,
I think I'm really nearly finished with the samurai now ;)...

But I'm not 100% satisfied with the skin shader, especially because there are small greeny areas in certain angles caused by the Oren-Nayar-Blinn. Everything else can be read in the following thread:

Some useful help would be great. Thanks for your patience.

I think it looks great!

If i had to crit something i would say that his shoulders seem a little too "round" to me. For someone as defined as this character is in the abs, and biceps, i'm thinking his shoulders should be showing a lot more definition.

Good job,

With his arms forward, the clavicles, shoulders, shoulder blades go forward as well. The pecs should also be rounder and bulged. Pick up an issue of Flex magazine, there's a common pose where the bodybuilder leans forward with his arms curled slighted and flexed.

It turned out great. Look forward to some more

I hope it's better now (how can I scale the images uniformly when posting?):

So, if noone of the 100.000 members here has critiques anymore, I'll take it to the showroom... ;)

the skin texture looks fantastic. The only thing I could see that may neeed some adjustment is the clothing. Would there not be more wrinkles in the pants?
Everything looks great :buttrock:

07 July 2004, 11:32 PM
Thanks. :)

Hm, I think you're right. I created the pants with reactor cloth simulation, so it's physical correct. But I should have taken more segments for that to get more wrinkles. I tried it once more, but there was an unexpected error with the simulation. So I had to settle for it, sadly...

Here's the link to the showroom with the newest and final version of the samurai:

It is a minor thing anyways. perhaps as you evolve this character you can add the forearm guantlets [Ninja things] or something simular. Maybe a few more swords on his belt, or Perhaps some Japanese type designs in the clothing say around the cuffs or down the seam. I think it looks great, can you post some wireframes?
BTW those feet and sandles look fantastic!
