*Matthew runs back to batcave
06-16-2004, 03:53 PM

06-16-2004, 03:56 PM
What is the topic? Is it wannabee (like bees) or wannabe.. ?? ?
06-16-2004, 04:12 PM
cheehad i think its wannabe ...
apple fairy wannabee
06-16-2004, 06:04 PM
Cyro -- Don't know what an apple fairy is, but that's a very funny sketch.
06-16-2004, 07:38 PM
more sketchy this time. about 45 Minutes I think. There are some color glitches. More crits highly appreciated
I took it for Wannabe...
PS | 45M
06-16-2004, 07:53 PM
this one was going to be about a geeky teenager asking a girl out (i.e. wannabe boyfriend)...but ran out of time and space for the geek...so...
wannabe in love
how soppy i know [so much so, i wannabe sick!]
painter / 2hrs30
Garma that looks really cool! I like the colours.
Matthew-S there's nothing wannabe about that batman! you've captured the dark mystery of the character really well.
06-16-2004, 08:08 PM
my piece of advice, garma, is to make a distinct difference between the foreground and background. I don't really konw what your focus is in this image: should it be the close man or the far man? Also the colors of the foreground's man's face are too similar to the background's sky's color haha.. anyway.. you get my point
nice finished sketch though.. we get a sense of mood in your pic ..better than mine! :)
hope that helps..
i'll post mine when i get off work (which will be never)
06-16-2004, 08:19 PM
thanks :) now that you mention it, I indeed get your point. I indeed had trouble with the colors of the foreground's man. the focus should be the far man, but I failed to reach that, I see now. What would you have done? leave the foreground completely black maybe and move it some more to the left? ANd how would you improve the focus on the far man?
and better mood than yours.. that's one hell of a compliment, thanks :)
drawMonger: thanks, glad you like them
06-16-2004, 08:46 PM
My first post
PS 6. Mouse. 30 mins.
Also my first real attempt at sketching on the computer. First discovery: Mouse bad. Tablet good?
06-16-2004, 08:55 PM
here is mine... 5 minutes paper and pen (since i forgot my pencils)
this is a self potrait... me being a wannabe artist.... *sigh*:argh:
... could people stop saying they suck... I look at your work and go WOW and then I look at mine and go  and then you say you suck... man if you suck then what the hell am I doing here?
06-16-2004, 09:21 PM
A Wallaby like Mike.
Hey, I though it was funny.
Photoshop CS & Wacom
06-16-2004, 09:45 PM
I had some extra time So I decided to put some color in to it..
selfpotrait..... "Ines the wannabee artist"
5 min sketch pen paper.
30 minutes Photoshop.
06-16-2004, 09:51 PM
bah another super quick sketch, might paint him up later if I can.
06-16-2004, 10:01 PM
a cheesy one but hey....
wannabe in touch with nature
lmao with cyro's lolol
06-16-2004, 10:19 PM
Wannabe an Anti-Hero!!! :D
I gave myself 1 hour.
Ahwell, I did my best...
it's an angel-wannabe devil... :hmm:
He also painted himself white, but it partially washed off after
he flew through a dense cloud...
06-16-2004, 10:44 PM
Wannabe human... :p
50 minutes , Photoshop, with a Wacom .
06-16-2004, 11:05 PM
I always wanted to be sculptor
(...but i couldn't)
2h 30min with PS&Wacom and chinese food
06-16-2004, 11:29 PM
It all began when they got Billy his first bike...
Photoshop, Gerald, didn't really time it... uhm... about 40 minutes probably.
I need to practise lighting and perspective, I really do. And while I'm at it, grab a book of anatomy too.
Let's see if I can comment on all who have submitted something so far:
made in uterus : glad to see I'm not the only one who at first interpreted the title that way; second one has a nice atmosphere to it
matthew s : even after reading what technique you use, you still create awesome pieces with it
cyro : that's one amusing character you got there
raitis : not sure what this one's wanting to be, but nice pencil (byro?) work
garma : I'd want to be somewhere else if I were that character ;) hrm, and after reading bonzo's comment I noticed the man close by... thought he was another rock
drawmonger : not quite on topic, and I want a t-shirt like that
lsuwest : nice topic, mouse bad indeed, bad tablet even worse; if you did this by mouse, I congratulate you for your courage
flair : best sketch so far, luv it
sagi_13 : amusing, not too sure on the colouring technique though
kieronh : for a super quick sketch, looking good, amazingly clear lines
ludovicus : it's quite blurry, but I think it'd be quite disturbing if it wasn't ;)
art2 : amusing concept, very nice sketch
pentagramma : I was smiling like an idiot in front of my screen when I saw yours, very nice
telemaco : ooh, lovely lightning and wonderful image overall
06-16-2004, 11:36 PM
Great entries, everybody...
Out of curiosity, do you guys just do your SotD in 640 x 480 at 72 dpi... or do you do it in a different size and resize it afterward? I have a lot of trouble getting any sort of detail into anything when I do it at the size setting - and I'd really like to know if anyone has a special method...
*EDIT* And here's my sketch... aw man, animation angel beat me to the wannabe lady by like five minutes! That's ok though, I'll chalk that up to another instance of great minds thinking alike.
2 Hours (including time where I redrew the image like a million times) in Photoshop w/ WACOM tablet.
06-16-2004, 11:38 PM
Painter 15 mn
06-16-2004, 11:48 PM
half an hour in ps..
p.s. here's a small redo of garma's sketch.. messing with color to bring out the focus..
i hope you don't mind :hmm:
i'll delete if you (or anyone for that matter) wants to
06-16-2004, 11:54 PM
I'd hate to take this mess on in a fight.
30 min on photoshop.
06-17-2004, 12:19 AM
I couldn't get my mind of the "bee-thing", so I decided to use the cliche interpretation of "wannabe" and make some sort of relevant situation. As I live in a democratic monarchy, the link to a rebellion-wannabe against the queen's power made sense to me.
Adobe Illustrator: about 75 min.
06-17-2004, 01:26 AM
Wannabe Ladies!!! Not the best sketch so far, (since i'm better at drawing on paper), but lots of fun. Photoshop +wacom 1 hour.
p.s nice work pentagramma and Flair!
p.s. I just realized i forgot the underarm hair! whoops maybe next time
06-17-2004, 01:40 AM
Flatuloso, i can only speak for myself, i have found no need to use a bigger canvas then what this topic sugests but thats 'cause i don't use much detail..., besides, i'm no pro. i know for one that mathew-s drew his robot overlord theme on a bigger canvas and then rescaled it to the given topics size...
puh not much time today.
Art2 nice character
Telemaco great sketch as usual!
Pasto nice one!
made in uterus nice mood!
some great work so far!
06-17-2004, 01:54 AM
lolololol those mickey ears!!!!! LOLOL
06-17-2004, 03:03 AM
Quick stab at goin' all comic book style... I didn't spend nearly enough time inking, or colouring. Pretty obvious though I guess.
Couple hours taken. All done in Photoshop with wacom graphire 2.
06-17-2004, 03:07 AM
Hi It's my first time entering something in daily sketch forum. :)
30 min in PS with watercoloring brush effect.
It's about a wannabe human computer. :D Hope you like the idea!
(updated) hotlink allowed from other link :)
(oops i just noticed the size rule. :/ Next time I'll keep it in mind. :) )
06-17-2004, 03:23 AM
45m pencil, 5m color in Photoshop
06-17-2004, 03:24 AM
What a great little contest! Gives me an excuse to have some fun and work on my technique!
Ok. 1.5 hours, pencil, mouse, Photoshop.
06-17-2004, 03:29 AM
These are great!
Batboy, 15 minutes, pencil and paper.
06-17-2004, 03:33 AM
First time trying this.
Another superhero wannabe...
Pencil, Photoshop, Intuos2. Total time 2hrs.

Yeah, I do mine at a much, much higher resolution and then resize the image later.
You'll find it works alot better that way.
...I seriously need a Wacom Tablet.
06-17-2004, 03:56 AM
1.5 hrs in photoshop
I could call this one "Family Portrait". My sister is a HUGE Buffy fan, although she's too much of a sun worshipper to ever be a good Goth. And I was 14 when Miami Vice first became popular. Too young for a 5 o'clock shadow but I shaved my widow's peak so that I'd have a straight hairline like Don Johnson. My buddy bought a cheap white summer blazer from Chess King and would push the sleeves up to his elbows. Well, enough midnight confessions.
BTW, flair is the guy to beat for the Best Pun award.
06-17-2004, 03:58 AM
I've seen plenty of Wallabies and none of them spell ther name that way. ;)

Are Wacom tablets really the be-all end-all? I've been pretty happy with a mouse and a 6 year old Mac so far and can't see spending $300 right now for a 6x8 Intuos. Pencils, markers and waterproof ink are pretty good too if you have a scanner. Besides, the people here who "Wannabe" Wacom owners are putting out some good stuff already. In my day. . .
Sorry, it's late and I need sleepys. :surprised I wannabe in bed right now. G'night.
06-17-2004, 04:25 AM
Spoken like somebody who's never used a wacom! ;)
06-17-2004, 04:33 AM
Haha wow :\ This was a hard one today, and I loved the interpretations o_O
I wish I could do these earlier, as I don't have time during the day cause of rebuilding roof with fam :| Oh well! here's mine!:
heh, the intention was a day dreamer :Z not too happy tho, and i went crazy with the cloth and didnt get it right.. ah oh well, thats what practice is for :)
o well, gonna crit cause there snot much to do at 12:45 in the morn ;)
just random so here goes:
made in uterus: ROCK on \m/ :)
Matthew-S: that technique you posted last thread by Craig Mullins is definitely awesome, I'm going to use it next time ;) - as always great work. The technique kind of feels like cheating, but Iíve used it in game textures and actually many places really, its pretty good to get a texture and detail... but at the same time it feels a bit weird to reuse old work :P o well, great stuff!
Garma:This is one of your better ones and im liking it :) No horizon on this tho so Iím left with the impression that he's floating or its flat.. good work tho ;)
LSUwest: awesome, that pencil over color is a really cool idea Iíve been meaning to use for some time now ;)
sagi_13: lol ;) love it!
flair: WOW! hit me with a bang when I saw that, great style and design and awesome contrast/color work. I do feel about yelling it being too loose however, maybe couple it with darker lines or define things more - for edges.. but at the same time I donít think u need it. Awesome everything man.
sagi_13: omg. 10x better (:
kieronh: hehe cool :0 that must have been what I looked like when I tried to rap.. :P
made in uterus: beautiful I think this is one of your better ones. I would argue about oclors in certain areas but they would throw the image off. great job man!
art2: hehe :0 cool idea!
pentagramma: LOL awesome work and cool idea ;)
telemaco: I love how you draw (:
flatuloso: omg.. noo.. NOO!! the chest.. ah.. its so protruding.. how could you o_O lol good work!
pasto: I think that rocks. There is a certain feel about it that i love, kind of simple and water colory almost, contemporary in a way. i like it (:
clockwerkz: excellent man, excellent ;)
Zocarius: lol cool idea (: nice mood on the queen ant too!
animation angel: noo! you too! AHHH O_O
Goro: excellent work! your skill rocks me, even in 20 mins :Z
dimension: awesome man, I love it although the writing is hard to read o_O i thin kit rocks!
dreammaster: hehe, thatís some awesome shading work, and i love the idea :Z cool stuff man!
ephesus: lol I like it.
SteveV: hah thatís cool, maybe if you brought out his expression more, but very cool :0
mahir: lol so wrong ;P i like superman!
Ilikesoup: well at least they weren't hairy males in drag.. :P nice!
06-17-2004, 04:33 AM
Did you know companies make better and better computers? I didn't know 6 year old computers still existed.
Think of writing on a piece of paper with a rock.. One part of the rock has a little graphite in it too.. Now.. do you need a pencil?
06-17-2004, 04:36 AM
PS / Wacom / 2 hours.
(2 hours - not counting the first 1.5 hours before the power outage.... Anyone know how to make Photoshop CS do autosaves? *grumble snort gripe bitch.....* )
Matthew-S - as usual, nice work!
Flair - Nice one !
Pentagramma - Love the suit and tie on the critter :)
Telemaco - Great drawing as usual !
Pasto - Don't see why you couldn't have been. Well done
Clockwerkz - That guy just makes me bust up every time I look at it. :)
Goro - Hahahahaha
Mahir - That's great !
LSUWest - nice concept :) And yes: Mouse bad. Tablet = best present my wife ever gave me. And she's a generous woman.
Wacom's won't turn you into an instant artist. But if you already have some idea of what you're doing, your work in something like photoshop will improve. It basically allows you to mimic any traditional medium, which you can only do to a limited degree with a mouse.
06-17-2004, 05:11 AM
Ephesus: That's real cool! :D
A wannabe orc :B
Kinda inspired by the project we (Marco Wilz, Goro Fujita, Felix Graf, Ole Bukowsky and myself) are currently working on:
Sorry for the little cross-promotion :P
06-17-2004, 05:33 AM
stephan.s...mate that's awsome..
First image posting, so let's see how it goes.
Made with Photoshop and mouse. 2.5-3 hrs.
Thought I'd do something about soccer, since it's the European Championships right now, but it some how turned into this.
06-17-2004, 06:14 AM
srry for late entry, sleeping during the day , awake at night
this is bacicly showing my poor attempt 2 draw something that im trying 2 dipict
srry that i made it small was just messing around and i liked how i did it
06-17-2004, 06:58 AM
Wow. There are a lot of really good ones today. Heres mine. If it offends anyone Ill take it down. 20 minute sketch. 1 hour coloring.
06-17-2004, 07:23 AM
zzacman: Lmao, I was really waiting for that one to come up! Really well done!
Stephan: great mood.
Took way too much time on this one. I can't help it ... I love the character concept ones, because that's what I do most of the time. Anyhoo ... wannabe "the bride".
Photoshop 2.5 hours
I kinda liked his hair better this way, but the Bride was blonde ...
There were a lot of really good entries today.
 for: made in uterus, Matthew-S, LSUwest (great concept), flair (rockin wallabie), art2, Pentagramma (wicked!), Goro (love the ears), SteveV (you should color it), mahir (my personal favorite cause I like sick humor), stephan.s (fantastic render), & bumskee (too cute).
Flatuloso - I start at 1280 X 960 and 150dpi. The second image here shows actual size before reducing by 50%
06-17-2004, 08:42 AM
I'm loving this place!
Kirt, I'm a full time illustrator, this is just the break I need from the routine of designing motorsport t-shirts 12 hours a day 6 days a week, but I don't have time to colour stuff up.
It sure would be fun though!
06-17-2004, 08:59 AM
06-17-2004, 09:21 AM
this is my first time to the daily sketch, and I wish to make a habit of it, 'cause I'm just taking on color. Enough blabbing, this is a Wanna Bee. Wanna Bees are from a hive that has changed from monarchy to capitalism, so each one is aware of herself and turned to be very individualistic and posmodern. All they can think of is "I wanna! I wanna! I wanna!", so they always carry around a set of credit cards to indulge themselves in materialism.
1 hour, Photoshop and a Wacom

(No offense flair! Steve and I have a mutual friend from Lancaster who is interested in coming to Aussie! )
06-17-2004, 11:41 AM
It's true Detective Guy!
So what do you think of the art here...pretty god damn awesome eh?
06-17-2004, 12:10 PM
SteveV and Guy Incognito, thanks for giving me the correct local spelling. I wouldn't want to look like a tourist. We certainly have enough of them here in Lancaster, staring at the Amish.
Boy that's the last time I trust Webster. At least I didn't use the other alternate spelling, Whallabee.:)
06-17-2004, 12:23 PM
I had something posted here but it was embarrasing.
06-17-2004, 12:31 PM
Great work zzacmann! to bad our president never went AWOL huh!
Thats ok. people love a good rumor.
hehe! :p ( I couldnt help myself. )
Wannabe happy. Am trying to learn drawing and painting. This is my second ever. I started it in opencanvas, then finished it in painter 8 with a wacom tablet. About 3 hours :( I probably broke a whole bunch of drawing and painting rules but i had a lot of fun.
06-17-2004, 03:34 PM
Bonzo -- Well, I got a good deal on the Mac from a guy in Lancaster, PA. He climbed up into his horse drawn buggy, high fived his friend and shouted, "Dude, we're getting a Dell!":D
06-17-2004, 05:37 PM
ahh here's another, good practice.. A little kid trying to scare his dog..if that thing even looks like a dog...
just under 2 hours and PS
zzacmann, like that one :>
kirt, nice character!!
Sir Patroclo, love the BEE!!! she's nicely done.
06-17-2004, 09:31 PM
So what do you think of the art here...pretty god damn awesome eh?
This has quickly become my favourite forum on the entire internet (heh).
But seriously, the work here is beyond fantastic and inspirational. I'll get my courage up soon and start posting.
Great work everyone!
06-17-2004, 10:27 PM

im late, but whatever.. this is more for me than it is you! ;D
PS - a few hrs while on the phone
also, it's not as much "wannabe", as it is "people look like their pets" .. doh.
