still: choice of minerals (in german: Mineralienauslese)
software: cinema 4d xl 8.5
This is my little choice of minerals from around the world ;-)
This picture is finished 3D work.
It reached the third place in the category "home / still / still life" at the animago-award 2004.
For me it was a challenge to produce own computer-generated shaders, which cause an reliable impression.
Number of polygons: ~ 354000
Number of shaders: nearly 100
Number of minerals: 23
Number of lights: 5
Your thoughts are welcome.
Here it is:

very cool. When you think about making rocks, it may not seem hard, but to create the minerals you've made here (especially the crystals) I'm guessing was quite challenging. They all look spot on to me except the Australian one. To me it seems that the gold is blending into the rock instead of attatched to it. The rest, though.... well done.

At first glance it seems quite poor..
then, suddenly my view opened gates onf my mind and..
Defenitely well done, bjodo! Congrats because the level of details of some pieces is astonishing!
the azure crystals on the bottom of image let my mind wander
in lost places :)
Now I suggest you to improve your "stage" a little bit of better lighting setup and a little bit of details in the floor..
(the floor with that procedural seem out of place)
and probaly a better choose on camera position.
It could be better and better for sure! keep it render! and thanks for posting!
P.S. I hope my thoughts were not too rude, I see great potential in this image and my crits only want to let you improve it!
hope this do not harm your feelings. :hmm:

by the by, just out of curiosity, how long did this sucker take to render?

Try a different table top material like a wood or something. Maybe stainless steel. The procedural texture you are using right now, looks too much like another mineral sample and is kind of distracting. Nice job on modeling the crystals.

just curious are those based on actual minerals?. I am in my fourth year studying one of my majors earth sciences. I don't recognize any of them. It would be very cool if it actually displayed it's actual mineral properties

First of all - thank you for the congratulations and ideas.
Rendering-time (AMD 2800+, 1GB RAM): 11h 21m 36s
These minerals do not base on real ones.
I was interested in real minerals for a long time.
Therefore some attributes shurely are related to my knowledge, e.g. how these specimen in the picture would cause an reliable and interesting impression.
Your ideas (e.g. another floor and better lighting) are resembling to mine but difficult for me to realize.
This picture is properly speaking final.
Consequently I have spend so much time with it.
Possibly I will realize another work with new minerals where I can carry out these ideas.
If you are interested in some more minerals I have made, then take a look at these:
