Mike Bruinsma has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.

Here's a quick inspiration sketch to start my thinking process on this project. I am trying to blur the line somewhat between the biological and the mechanical in this piece. To hopefully indicate this I will be using combinations of host internal organs, grown biologicals and fabricated parts, combined through a variety of construction and assembly solutions. At this point I am looking for an alien organism/machine that is advanced, efficient, lightweight, agile, quick and graceful. The function of this thing will probably be some type of alien soldier/weapon.

Nice sketch! I like you style of drawing!:bounce:

Good luck!

Here's some shape explorations to help me refine my direction, what to keep and what to edit.

Here's another page of shape explorations to help me decide how I want to push the design.

Here's another pass on the design. Some possible types of materials that could be used might be flexible cell fiber bioglass, muscle tissue grown/cloned inside porous metal molds, organs from other animals that would be transplanted and/or genetically altered to possibly provide energy storage or maybe high tolerance to hostile conditions, advanced computing systems to provide network capability between units, host thinking organs(brains) to provide decision making skills and individuality.

Here's a quick structural revision that I feel fairly comfortable about pursuing.

06 June 2004, 06:53 PM (

Here's a group of Shocktroops to insert into a shot design.

06 June 2004, 07:11 PM (

I decided to post this image at this stage because I believe at this point more time and noodling with the piece would pull it past a shot concept and more into the realm of an illustration piece.

After taking a good look at what I had done previously I decided to push and fine tune the entire character. This is a quick study toward the character redesign.

Here is the revised Shocktroop character design.

I think the similarity to the Half-Life monsters is a bit too obvious. But I like it nevertheless.
I think the legs are a bit too thick (or similar) in comparison to the corpse.
If the top, let's call them "batteries", look more tech than organic, the legs from front to back should be more in line, If you know what I mean - the back leg should be moved slightly down for the sake of the perspective.

Here is the concept/illustration with a minimum of coloring added.

Here's the piece with some more color and value added.

 Oh no...another great entry I've missed:cry: ...sorry that I've not visited your link until this late stage.

I really like your sketches and thought the earlier action colour WIP with the five monsters attacking was amazing ...really dynamic and great depth.

Sometimes you can get bogged down with details (my entry has suffered from this) and this image has just enough to give the viewer all the information needed and retain life and energy.

Saying that, the latest WIP's are looking really cool and should help emphasise the machineflesh concept.

Great work...keep going and goog luck:applause:

awesome work in so little time, it's a pity this wasn't started earlier for the contest.. but i look forward to seeing it finished regardless! =) Personally i prefer the earlier version(s) of them guys, with a more organic (shaped) alien look as opposed to the more tank-like revisions.. but you're the artist. Either way i'm sure it will turn out great.. very nice work go go go!

Looks very interesting. Reminds me of a combination between starship troopers bugs and the matrix sentinels. Looks amazing!

We seem to get a lot more than I expected hehehe. I AM THE VOTING QUEEN! I just wish I had this time during critique  Good WORK MIKE!!!! I LOVE YOUR BUG...and I love the kind of see-through membrane all over him, and your choice of colors and the mist. IT all works together SO WELL.
