awesome topic, can't wait to get home!!

come on you fast sketchers.. let's see 'em!!

06-14-2004, 04:10 PM
u guys are great with topics, I used to run weekly drawing over at Sijun but I couldn't come close to topics with this caliber.

20-25 minutes, original brush in photoshop.

I hope I didn't break off from the subject too much but since the hangar is part of the city I thought it would work, otherwise just disqualify me. :)
"Every underground city should have a hangar with a spaceship"

keep it up everyone

Nice to see you here Matthew! Didn't see you for a while in
sijun's speedpaint. I'm Mitsui on sijun btw.

I'll post a sketch later. I also wanted to paint a hangar....
There is something about underground cities and hangars :)
keep it up

06-14-2004, 04:37 PM
RobertoOrtiz, thank you there. :)

Goro, yea I noticed earlier that you are mitsui when u posted that zombie pic in sijun, you are doing a great job and u are really an inspiration over at Sijun so keep up the good work u too. :)

I will be back in Sijun speedy in July I think, felt I had to take a break from there since I had been posting for two years constantly. thanks for the nice comment there Mitsui.

have a nice day guys

06-14-2004, 06:20 PM
Cool topic.... i think I will make mine just a sketch and not even attempt photoshop this time since my last few were disastrous... man what is my school teaching me grrr.
Will post later..

ps. I finally changed my avatar, like it?

06-14-2004, 07:00 PM
I had already commented on your avatar sagi.. get with it! But seeing as most of us here at CGtalk are guys (definitely assuming that) I'd say your new avatar is just DREAMY!!!

also, to scott harris, be sure to include your topic ideas where RobertoOrtiz has given us links to. It will probably be more accepted and respondent there. I like your mood (huge cavernous world) and lighting in that sketch, even though it's fast and simple.

well.. still waiting to get off work to sketch..

06-14-2004, 07:04 PM
well bonzo if ur were paying attention, its different today again.
get with it.
 ... yes i forget most people here are dudes after all.

06-14-2004, 07:25 PM
here's mine. Was supposed to be awesome, as always  I went B&W this time.

btw awesome topic. I might do another one if I have time

there are some lighting errors and perspective is off here and there (the road is supposed to descend) but well.. it's a sketch. You might notice that I got enough of this picture when I needed to do the background. Feel free to crit, I'd love that :)

PS / About 3 hours

not too many entries yet.

Matthew-S : cool : ) although this might as well be above the ground. nice style

Scott Harris : nice : ). if you don't want your suggestions to be lost, post them in the sticky thread at the top of this forum

sagi_13 : great, looking forward to what you come up with. don't forget to learn from your mistakes ; )

Dont blame them Sagi, most of them liked your old Avatar.
It is a guy thing, trust me.

Personally I like your new Avatar, even if I dont get light-headed with Orlando Bloom.

This is "Thane Kel", an underground city in the West Mountains of the Kingdom of Eria.

...and if someone wants to see it in full resolution, It can be done here:

PS & Wac, 2 hours, 2 coffees.

06-14-2004, 08:09 PM
ps. I finally changed my avatar, like it?

Sagi, I think your avatar is great if you want to BE a swarthy pirate. Ain't no rules 'bout it, but I really believe Garma really is a talking yellow dog and Goro is an ape. It's just the way it works. And I'll now think of you as Sagi the swarthy pirate. Arrrrrrrrrr, me hearty!

Hope you don't mind. ;)

time to change my avatar... :hmm:

 anyone noticed the changed facial expression? I'm nicer now

06-14-2004, 08:15 PM

Hi all, Long time reader first time poster here and first ever submission.

This took about 20mins using alias Sketchbook, i was going for a grassy/shaggy effect with the vehicle and architecture to help emphasise the underground feel.

06-14-2004, 08:41 PM
Wow, nice cities already, especially garma and telemaco, both very nice...
Anyway, I decided to try out an underground city myself but as you can see, spent way more time coloring then working on a good sketch..I might go for a different one later but decided to post this one anyway....Done in Painter 8, total +- 45mins..

06-14-2004, 09:22 PM
PS - 1hr

some nice entries today.. hope to see more!

06-14-2004, 09:33 PM
Garma, you are nicer! I thought you looked a bit different. BTW, I noticed you've shelved your more cartoon-styled work for awhile. I like both styles, but really respect how you're working hard to challenge yourself. Just remember to keep having fun with it. Cheers! BTW, your choice to paint this one in b&w was a good one. Perspective, depth and shading is all there. Nice work.

Telemaco -- Love your watercolors. 2 hours? You're my hero. And I think I see Tintin!

PaulZ -- I like the guy peering over the edge. Nice touch. He's gotta be hot, though with all that liquid magma.

06-14-2004, 09:48 PM
enviroments arnt my thing ><

good entries guys

06-14-2004, 10:04 PM
What's the time limit on the sketch sessions?

06-14-2004, 10:06 PM
It's a sketch-forum, correct? Then that's my excuse for the sketchiness of this one. That, and the fact that I'm absolutely not used to drawing more than stick figures...
About 30 minutes, Photoshop, and an unnamed tablet (Although I am considering naming it "Gerald")

06-14-2004, 10:32 PM
Telemaco love yours!!

Puuuh....this one was really hard.
approx. 4h but I just wanted to paint about 1h....
The lighting was a lot more difficult than I expected.

so here it is. (wacom + photoshop)

06-14-2004, 10:37 PM
20mins, dexxa + photoshop

i'm gonna see the other entries now

wow, mathew, thats

i really like garmas and telemacos idea :) reminds of lotr dunno why..

goro why are u so good? thats a kick a$$ lighting! :D

06-14-2004, 11:26 PM
made in uterus> good idea, I like it very much! lol
goro> You did it again!! The city in the roof is a nice sc-fi idea for an underground city, a smart way to change the point of view...
Szishren> Of course, this is for sketchs, nothing to excuse...

Thx for the comments...

06-14-2004, 11:50 PM
made in uterus:
Thnx for your nice words. I'm glad you like it. As I already
said I had a lot of trouble with this one till I got this result.
Still have to practice.
I get a lot of feedback from stephan.s who made the amazing
robot overlord sketch. (we're both students of the german film school). He helps me to improve my painting and lighting skills.
I started speedpainting about 2 months ago. My early paintings
were a mess...since then I paint at least one image every day.
This one was No. 99 btw.
I first I painted a lot of pictures with photo ref. Later I tried to
use my experience for paintings without ref. And it worked
pretty well.

Nice sketch! your improving very fast!
Using grayscale is a good way to practice values
You should try more of that.

thnx telemaco!

06-15-2004, 01:53 AM
Here's my entry. Took me about 20-30 min, using photoshop.

Goro, that's really nice work.. you've inspired me. I really like this whole quick painting idea.. I plan on trying to do at least 5 a week or so.

06-15-2004, 02:12 AM

30 mins photoshop+ wacom plus 30 mins trying to figure out my layout! Noooo.

06-15-2004, 02:25 AM

The terrors of living underground...

Marker and Illustrator
40 minutes.

06-15-2004, 04:30 AM
man i have my little drawing but i am at my parents house and they just bought a new dell and alas they didnt connect the scanner ... guess ill have to wake up early before 10am and see if i can find a scanner elsewhere, maybe at school to be able to submit my drawing.
.. it sucks to have it in my hand and not be able to feed it to the computer.

anyways, nice work everyone, hopefully ill submit mine by tomorrow before the new challenge starts....

Hope you don't mind. ;)

No I dont mind Id like to be a pirate.... but since I don't know what swarthy means (English is not my first language) I am going to have to find a diccionary and see if I want to be a swarthy pirate versus just a regular one....
EDIT: Diccionary definition.swarthy Being of a dark hue or dusky complexion.... adj : naturally having skin of a dark color.
Ill take the swarthy pirate then

I couldnt get the scanner to work but I took a picutre of it with my digital...... phew right on time!
pencil paper, 30 minutes

06-15-2004, 04:32 AM
Ugh, this was a great topic - but I'm a bit burnt out and was hurtin' to get something accomplished. As a result, this is my idea only fleshed out to about one quarter  I'm going to have to pick up my game for next week. Loved everyone elses, by the way, Made in Uterus and pluckylump in particular (Goro too, but that goes without saying :p)

1 Hour in Photoshop w/ WACOM.

06-15-2004, 04:41 AM
GORO, that's too good man...:applause:

made in uterus, I had a similar idea but couldn't put it down on canvas. !!

Telemaco, nice lines!

here's mine, missed last two, but not this time!!! PS 1 hr and 30 mins

[EDIT] the mouth looked a bit off so changed it..

06-15-2004, 04:58 AM
Kinda tired tonight.. 2 hours in photoshop (:

i decided a higher, wider shot this time with a sad attempt at making light come thru crevacises. the blue highlights are the deep ores under the rock that is being mined and carried throughout the "river" to the homes for power/food/energy. a top scouting tower looks out for cracking and surface deformations and offers a very nice view too ;)

06-15-2004, 04:59 AM

psp 2 hours.
still working on it.

06-15-2004, 05:06 AM
Well, if you have an underground city then ya needs an underground mayor:

Approx 1hr in ps

@sagi_13 -- I should have checked my dictionary, too. I thought that scruffy+macho=swarthy. Basically it sounded good next to pirate :D

Agent D
06-15-2004, 05:08 AM
I tried a non-literal interpretation of the topic. Around an hour in Painter 8. Perspective/angles are weird because I forgot to flip the image as I was working on it. :hmm:

I guess this guy needed a few thousand servants in the afterlife.

06-15-2004, 05:18 AM
Aaaaaaaaaand here's another one.

I really don't like doing backgrounds or environments, so I decided this is a must-do assignment for me. Take a deep breath, dive right in. I might have overdone it on the stalactites, though. Approx 1hr in photoshop

06-15-2004, 05:32 AM
Wow, this one was tough.

4hours / ps / wacom.

I don't feel it's finished at all, ... but if I don't get to bed, my polls with the wife demographic are going to be unrecoverable.

Matthew S. - great color and light. Love it.

Garma - Cool concept. I'd like to see that developed ;)

Telemaco - Sick. That's just sick and wrong. And to get that kind of quality on only 2 cups of coffee. Amazing. I love it. Color it !

Raitis - I really like your submission... but I don't really understand it. It's cool to look at though :)

Goro - Great concept. Great lighting. Great composition. (This has been a recording, and will be repeated regularly.)

Made in uterus - I love this one. Got a good chuckle from me :)

Bumskee - that's a great image. I really like it. A little more detail in the background to really get the idea that's he's underground would make it superb.

AgentJ - That's a cool image, and great idea on the perspective.

[edit: resized image to conform to topic rules]

06-15-2004, 05:58 AM
1 hour sketch. 45 minutes coloring.

06-15-2004, 06:51 AM
thnx guys!!

yahoo! bumskee that's totally awesome! That's probably
your best sketch so far! Great use of colors, cool perspective and
nice character!

Great work everyone!:applause:

06-15-2004, 07:11 AM
thanks for the nice comments everyone  I see some very nice entries around

feyshtey: great work, I love the composition

agentJ: Nice perspective, I like the finishing blue touch too.

bumskee: great lighting! Very good work

Goro: I dig your style. The upside down city works very good, the reflections on the runway look great!

made in uterus: sweet disguise

:applause: everyone

06-15-2004, 08:20 AM
loved this topic!!!

pencil and paper / photoshop / 3hrs 30mins

06-15-2004, 08:36 AM

Photoshop 1.5 hours

My cavernous roots ended up looking like tree trunks, so is it just me or did mine turn into a forest city?

Funny concepts from made in uterus, pluckylump & Ilikesoup. I'm really enjoying your sketches telemaco ... nice lines! And of course ... Goro. Send someone out to break his Wacom. Too much damn talent for one person. :D

06-15-2004, 08:57 AM
kirt that's outstanding again. great work

decided to do another one. It's merely a doodle. I should stop starting sketching when I should learn for my examinations :( Not too much time involved. Hangar-idea stolen of course :) wanted to see if I could do it

1H / PS

06-15-2004, 09:19 AM
THanks for the kind words. Yeah I think I am learning so much from these daily sketches.

AgentJ, that's really nice. the blue works really well.

zzacman, the lighting is awsome, nice concept.

kirt, wow!! brilliant, I think we should send someone to break yours before anyones..

06-15-2004, 09:29 AM
"It's down there..."

I've got to start putting more time into these. But I'm getting better dammit!!!:)

1 hour (ish) wacom, photoshop.

06-15-2004, 10:26 AM

Updated: 30min sketch with a water-soluble Aquarelle pen, interesting to use as you can put a wet brush on top & blend the pencil lines. No time to take this where it needs to go unfortunately.

Matthew-S - nice feel to it
Garma - good to do some black & white stuff this is coming along good
Telemaco - like the style of it with the gorge down one site
Goro - cool, good work on the lighting
made in uterus - hehe this is great
pluckylump - excellent use of line
bumskee - I like this one, nice colours
agentJ - good you've got a whole plan to what's going on, like the blue perhaps it needs to spill more onto the city
Ilikesoup - hehe what about the prairie dog voting backlash
zzacmann - nice concept & good style to the buildings
Kirt - looks great, I see what you mean about the scale looks tree size rather than city

06-15-2004, 10:42 AM
30 Mins

06-15-2004, 01:17 PM
Photoshop Photo manipulation

underground city - below the surface city - under the surface of the skull - ant nest - ant city.
Not a healthy head.

06-15-2004, 02:37 PM
Simply wonderful. There are some really nice sketches here. I'm learning from just watching your guys.

Really Creative Kirt, and great Matthew-S
Matthew-S: nice, great perspective, great line control. Good job
Telemaco: great lines
Goro: as usual, just beautiful
made in uterus: super funny. I love the idea. Totally different. Great sketch

bumskee: nice colours, great character design

DanubuKa: loving the colours. Its a bit freaky. Is this a dead head? Or this is what is happening inside the skull of a living person? I love it either way!

agentJ: just amazing work. I'm just starting out digital painting, and with lots of practice I would love to be as good as you (and lots of these other creative guys!)

06-15-2004, 02:38 PM
Zzacmann - That's a great idea :)

DrawMonger - I really like this one. I'd like it even more if the area around the city were developed or cropped off. Good concept though.

Kirt - The hitlist of wacoms to break has you hovering at the top. Great image! Again!

Danubuka - I really like that image. Very powerful. I like the over-exposed look to it too.

06-15-2004, 02:38 PM
Yeah this doesn't look very good, but I at least wanted to get one in for this category.

Photoshop. Less than ten minutes.

Some of these are great, guys. All are creative... keep goin' : ).

06-15-2004, 05:16 PM
I want to say all of these completely kick ass (: God tons of you have improved and I love all of these :Z just too many to crit! ahh! Rock on guys (:
