Hey whats up guys.
Here's a commission that was done for my gf's cousin.

8 hours painted from scratch completely in Photoshop 7
A reference was used, and a few things were changed such as.. the eyes, colors used, and the hair.

06-09-2004, 07:36 PM

06-10-2004, 05:45 AM

06-10-2004, 05:48 AM

06-10-2004, 07:41 PM
Awesome! Really unique expression and you nailed it. Looks like a photo.

06-10-2004, 09:04 PM
*saved to inspiration folder!

Your proportions are great, and your colors/tones are excellent.

Add a little shine to the teeth, and a sparkle on the jewelry, and it's complete.

Very nice.

06-11-2004, 05:06 AM
nice painting !

06-11-2004, 05:47 PM
damn, real good, from a bit of a distance nobody could tell the differentce between photo and painting

06-13-2004, 07:28 PM
Thanks for your kind comments everyone :)

06-13-2004, 10:10 PM

06-13-2004, 10:55 PM
She has transformed into super saiyan! :scream:

Great work

06-13-2004, 11:18 PM
Very Cool, how heavily did you use photographic material?

06-13-2004, 11:49 PM
Very nice painting.

Quite possibly the worst hairdo ever. Hope she doesn't really do her hair like that.

06-13-2004, 11:54 PM
hey this is a really wonderful painting. I have to disagree with some of the people as I think this is really great hair doo. Good choice as it has tons of charcter and sets it apart from the rest. Way to be daring

06-13-2004, 11:58 PM
i specialy love the hair

good job there !

06-14-2004, 12:12 AM
Great job , she looks very real, and pretty

06-14-2004, 12:15 AM
holly real looking painting:eek:

06-14-2004, 12:59 AM
Awesome, gotta love that hairdo! Really like the way the hair is painted, nice flow and highlights.

06-14-2004, 01:17 AM
Holy crap! When I clicked the link, I thought that was just phenominal CG, but you painted that?!? Wow.

That's amazing dude. You should be proud of yourself. I don't even bother in PS because the comp with the tablet only has Elements and Elements tablet input sucks. Not to say I could even come close, but just to say, wow! You painted that, and did it in Photoshop. Somebody give this kid a prize!

...still drooling...

06-14-2004, 01:27 AM
very good work every thing just great
ur work amazing:thumbsup:

06-14-2004, 01:37 AM

I think that should say... Great pic, great hair, aweful hair-do. :D

But really... very good composition. I would love to see a video tutorial on your process.

06-14-2004, 02:31 AM
Good work men! I'm really impress of your work!

06-14-2004, 03:13 AM
Fantastic picture!! Looks eerily like an ex of mine sans the hair. :surprised

06-14-2004, 03:58 AM
you've got to be joking.... this is just frikkin amazing! The hair is crazy!

06-14-2004, 04:36 AM
I feel like I should say the painting is great, and the hair looks like something from the 80's :D

06-14-2004, 06:11 AM
Extremely good painting.

Now since EVERYONE has commented on the hair...I like the hair. I like how photoreal it is, and the punk-ish look to it. It's cool all the way around.

06-14-2004, 06:43 AM
nice hair. photoreal!!!!!!

can you share your experience with us?

06-14-2004, 07:37 AM
Nah Her hair so groovey.

awsome work, is there any reason you didn't use painter?

06-14-2004, 07:48 AM
Utterly brilliant.. Your photoshop skills are incredible to be able to catch so much emotion and life in a piece like that. Everything is so natural looking, the skin tones are very nicely simulated, and.. of course, that hair!! W00t! Ok, I want hair like that!!
I'm very impressed by your attention to detail, this is a wonderful piece, thanks for sharing!

Jimzip :D

06-14-2004, 08:17 AM

06-14-2004, 10:03 AM
that's just amazing! you've got talent!
no crits here

06-14-2004, 10:26 AM
very good,

06-14-2004, 10:38 AM
Everything was painted? Or you've painting on a photo?

06-14-2004, 11:30 AM
Really amazing work, if I may suggest...I would touch up the white in the eyes and teeth. The eyes should have a bit more gray areas and highlights to create that moist look. Right now the white looks a bit flat. The teeth could use a little bit more color variation so she doesn't look like that time Ross from Friends over did his teeth whitening.

Like said before the proportions and tones are amazing

06-14-2004, 11:43 AM
Very well made portrait, with a surprising hair.

06-14-2004, 12:04 PM
super :applause:

06-14-2004, 12:24 PM
if it is what i think it is, than it aint all that good.. yes the toning and all is nice..

But when you paint over a photo, it isnt much of a deal.
it would be good if you did it from looking at a pic, not tracing one.

is you havent traced, than congrats to you!:D

06-14-2004, 01:10 PM
A long long time ago back in the 80s lived a strange woman who... (continue story).

LOL, painting wise awesome :)

06-14-2004, 02:56 PM
WoW! The lighting on the face is amazing... the chest sorta flattens out a bit. Love the hair. Really great job!

06-14-2004, 03:02 PM
good painting is she sopose to be a super saiyan she looks likes shes going to power up and throw a fireball at you.
"KamehamehaAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" :P

06-14-2004, 03:23 PM
Anime----> Great painting but please show some WiPs or just answer the question in regards to how you worked here. From my experience with paint-overs this looks to be totally legit (you just used the reference as that) The quality of the brush strokes, lighting, and tones plus the time that went into it makes me think that its a really well done painting

06-14-2004, 04:30 PM
Wow... very realistic !

It's not like painting from a photo is hard either. All the difficult stuff has already been done for you (translating a 3d shape to a 2d surface).

I'd be impressed if he had a model sitting in front of him while he made it - otherwise - bleh. :\

06-14-2004, 04:53 PM
Very nice job:wavey:

06-14-2004, 06:27 PM
Yeah, this one definitely has strong realism especially when viewed a few feet away. Great job. The coloring is spot on.

06-14-2004, 06:32 PM
with all of the care taken on the center, why didnt you bother to smooth your brush strokes on the edges? it, quite literally, looks like 2 different processes. :curious:

06-14-2004, 08:06 PM
pretty cool, but how did you achieve that hair style?

06-14-2004, 08:31 PM
I really like the painting first of all, but I agree with some of the earlier posts. Rockwell, Ross and some of the other illustrators used photo refs too but they used them to create an illustration that did not exist--they simply recreate what a camera could already do---what is the point of a painting if a photo gives you the same feeling and look---however there is no shortage of skill whenever art is created and this rendered very nicely.

06-14-2004, 08:51 PM
very nice :applause:

and to all the others who look down on an overpaint..

Well, go ahead and do it, if you think it's easy. You know what a front page plug is worth? Hundreds of hits on your website, you earn a name in the small CG world and what more... Might come handy in the job hunt. THere are people from WETA here, Pixar, DD, etc..

06-14-2004, 09:55 PM
oh dear, gotta love that painting, i love the lighting, the colors, its just perfect, i dont know why you guys dont like the hair-do, i like it :P cheers

06-14-2004, 09:57 PM

06-14-2004, 10:42 PM

I'm not trying to flame here.. for what it is, it's very nice. I just don't find it to be at all interesting or impressive. Sorry. My opinion.

THere are people from WETA here, Pixar, DD, etc..

I doubt anybody at WETA or Pixar are going to be terribly impressed by a paint-over.

06-15-2004, 03:07 AM
the hair looks very flat...give it some work...doesn't seem to have nearly the depth that the face has....

06-15-2004, 03:11 AM
holy crap. Awesome.

06-15-2004, 05:57 AM
dontcha hate it when somebody posts and image that gets lots of comments and they never post a reply to any of them.. :curious:

06-15-2004, 07:47 AM
Nice Job my friend!!

06-15-2004, 08:13 AM
man, that is insane

06-15-2004, 08:42 AM
you just put the photo in a layer , do it with some acrylics and pencils and i could judge your talent , but what you did anyone can do it, its just tecnicity nothing else and a pain in the ass

06-15-2004, 09:59 AM
this is a very cool painting.....very impressive work. Love the facial expression and colors.

Congrats on front page! :applause:

well that wasn't exactly my point. Whether they like it or not, they have seen your name, which is a good thing.

06-15-2004, 11:43 AM
man...it's awsome pic.

I love the hair.....geee.....greart work!!

06-15-2004, 12:21 PM
could you do a work in progress next time! I want to see the stages you went through!

06-15-2004, 03:28 PM
great work ,great color ,great hair
I can not believe my eyes.Similar to really

06-15-2004, 03:43 PM
Mmm.. brilliant work! well done!

06-15-2004, 04:43 PM
Uh, yeah. Where are those collar bones (clavicles)? I do like the Hair as it appears to be the most original part of the painting. Also, if it were a paint-over there would be no need to apply the paintbrush filters to the painting. So it doesn't even appear to be a paint-over :hmm:

That's too bad cause I can imagine a nice character painting coming from the talent that was used to create the hair.

06-15-2004, 08:56 PM
wow.wow, thats realy great man.i like the hair more than any other parts.....   :applause:

06-15-2004, 11:36 PM
holy crap.. amazing..

and yes i love the hair :)

06-16-2004, 08:15 AM
Wow!!! What program did you use for this? You can't even tell it's a painting... (if it's not a painting I'm sorry, but I'm assuming, given this forum, that it is a painting)

06-16-2004, 08:57 PM
Thanks everyone :) I enjoy reading all your feedback.

I used Photoshop 7 to paint this from scratch, I said that in the description already as well. A reference was used but Iv'e changed many things, such as the eyes, the colors, and the hair.

As for all the people in disbelief... this is NOT a paintover, and if you know photoshop you should be able to tell if you look closely.

As far as a tutorial goes, I'm too busy right now. But maybe in the near future.

The girl on the picture is VERY BEUTIFUL! she reminds me a bit of my girlfriends sister  :applause: Amazing work! And I also love her hair-cut

Love it! She reminds me a LOT of Rufio from "Hook." Maybe she's his sister :)
