Hi all,

I've just posted a cool short film, "Pfffirate" by Guillaume Herent and Xavier Andre from Supinfocom, now working professionally at Vanguard and Buf Campagnie, respectively. I met Guillaume at the 3D Festival and spoke to him about the making of the short film.

>> Read about the short film, and watch it on CGNetworks << (http://www.cgnetworks.com/cgfilms/cgfilm.php?story_id=2136)

06-01-2004, 03:01 AM

That was great guys!!!

But one thing that I didn't like was the bird when he was being shot at. Understandable cause of time constraints, but it would have been better had he been animated.

But oh man, this one had me laughing the whole way, beautiful work guys!!! :applause: :applause: :applause:

I loved the look and feel of everything in this short. It all looked very 'squishy' and soft. The sound design was excellent as well, everything has that rubber sound to it.

I loved it. Those rats made me laugh.

I wanted to save it (I keep shorts that inspire me on my HD) but couldn't. Is it protected (I saw that you have to be a member here to get it), or is it just my computer?

06-01-2004, 04:11 AM
Very original personal work. This short seems professional quality, all is very "clean".

I suggest you to creat short movies like this one for TV

06-01-2004, 04:35 AM
Really top quality production (other than the bird when being attacked, mentioned earlier in this thread and the article).

Very inspiring to learn that both these talented people received jobs after the short.

Thanks for sharing the article/short with us.

06-01-2004, 05:39 AM

When I was in the middle of production hell a few weeks ago I came across this film. I must have watched it about 15 times in a day, so I can vouch for its therapeutic quality! It's so refreshing in a very6 cynical world to watch a film as charming and unpretentious as this. Everything is so beautifully judged and the secret of good comedy is of course in the....

Absolutely loved it.

Great stuff - i love it :applause: ! It reminds me of Monkey Island, which is still my favorite game ! Hope to see more films like that !

06-01-2004, 09:29 AM
Great stuff! The blowing up of the boat in the beginning was an inspired way to open the piece, and the ending was very funny.

Congrats

06-01-2004, 01:07 PM
Shiver me timbers, that's awsome...

very nice modeling and great animating, the style reminds me of the Monkey Island series (the clouds, the style of the ship)

06-01-2004, 01:17 PM
This guy has a hell lot of talent in all aspects of CG animation AND directing. I'm speechless. :surprised By far the best short i've seen in cgnetworks the last couple of years.
Apparently thats what you have to do to get a job these days. :hmm:

Just go to their site http://pfffirate.free.fr/ click on the mouse and download the movie into WMP9 and then under file click save media as and you can save it to your HD or just do what others have said and look in your temp folder.

I saw this a while back. its reallly Good, the only thing i dont like about it is when hes shooting the cannon balls at the bird... way to static. but none the less very well done and awsomely entertaintastic.. my new word of the day

06-01-2004, 09:56 PM
That is all just fantastic!

The design touches on all of the items (plastic seams, vales...etc.) are absolutely wonderful...

I'm also going to say that the 'snapping' position of the bird as it avoids the cannon balls didn't quite work for me, but that's a tiny personal niggle in what is a truly superb short!

06-02-2004, 12:15 AM
Fantastic Short. Beautiful animation. Deserves all the praise and recognition it has received.

The whole concept is brilliant and allows the story to flow. I agree with the comments about the static shots of the bird. The scene is also too long and would have worked better if the pirate fired the initial shot and then the barrage of shots without having to re-iterate the joke.

I would also like to have seen more emphasis when the bird hits the ship, I happened to miss it on the first viewing.

I like the way they used halftone print shading on the surface of the plastic inflatables and the Flash based effects.

Do you think the bird burst the sea after he popped the pirate?

Has anyone e-mailed the guy's to tell them their short is being discussed on the CG Talk forum?

06-02-2004, 01:31 AM
Absolutely wonderful film :) Great story, such an original style - a fantastic piece of work!

06-02-2004, 05:26 AM
Yes a very cool short, wish it was a "long",it was that good.:buttrock: :bounce:

06-02-2004, 09:30 AM
:applause: Haha this is so amazing! Great movie, great characters, and the rats are as always the greatest! :D

06-02-2004, 09:42 AM
Outstanding character design.

I love it when the story and the 'look' meet.

06-02-2004, 09:44 AM
wonderful movie.
i really enjoyed the design and the plastic look on everything. the mice are my personal favourites.

i personally wouldn't have used these static images in that scene where the mechanical bird evades the cannonballs.
kinda weird, especially when he "jumps" back to life after the last ball.

anyway, great movie.

06-02-2004, 11:32 AM
i think the bird is static just cause they had very tight time constraints in the end... the effect don't look intended at all, the whole movie shows that they would have been able to do it! but I don't know for sure...

06-02-2004, 01:49 PM
I think the static images were supposed to show something similar to the agent avoiding the bullets on the rooftop on The Matrix movie. But i also agree, probably due to time constrains they couldn't find a better way to visualise this part.

06-02-2004, 01:52 PM
brilliant! I love it.

06-02-2004, 02:36 PM
Finally, something fresh! I really enjoyed watching this flick, great job!

06-02-2004, 03:02 PM

Very nice:thumbsup:

06-02-2004, 07:11 PM
Funny movie. The characters are very cute. :applause:

06-02-2004, 08:49 PM
First off this is amazing short!

Why was the parrot was frozen in air when the canons ball were flying past?

Was this an artistic choice?

All of the animators here were all glued to the scene, wishing that this was our demoreal, then when the parrot just froze, it really took us out of what was a otherwise very provocative piece.

Beautiful Work!!

06-02-2004, 10:13 PM
Stunning...! I really like your great work with a perfect story... wonderful motion timing... and the nice lighting.

And congratulations for winning the 3Dawards.org first prize for student animation.... I was present in the room when you won the prize. Good work....! As a fellow 3ds maxer I envy your animation skills... :)

06-02-2004, 11:42 PM
I usually have no lack of words but all I can think to say this time is wow, cool and awesome! My kids got a laugh out of it too, -though they gave me a strange look with the patch on the breast thing. ;)
