View Full Version : Machineflesh 2D Challenge Entry: corlen
05-28-2004, 07:18 PM
corlen has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.
05-28-2004, 11:11 PM
basically my whole idea with this piece, is to create tension and suspence.
the mechanical creature will be attempting to save the little girl from certain doom, the pics i have posted now is only the concepts and it will make more sence once i post the line drawing.
then basically you guys will be able to see all the pieces fit together, these are only my conceptual studies of the creature and the little girl.
good luck to everybody entering:)
05-28-2004, 11:16 PM
playing around with some light and shadows on the machanical bits of the arm.
05-28-2004, 11:26 PM
i was first thinking of the creature been nuclear powerd, but then i started with the idea of him been powerd by electricity, top right hand drawing, i think i am going to stick to the electrical powerd idea
05-28-2004, 11:31 PM
this is the expresion i want her to have, basically fear, she has a similar head to the mechanical creature, both of them have these dome like brain bowls. this way i can link a similarity between them.
05-29-2004, 01:14 AM
WooOOooOo..........I like your sketches..................................................You have a very good hand..............yes.....yes...............We like it too..........badaboom.....This is a thread I tuned on Mister Corlinator !:bounce: :bounce:

Wicked concept so far....
Good luck
05-30-2004, 01:08 AM
Awesome works!! i really like the way you color these pics. Do you use Painter? or Photoshop?
05-30-2004, 08:06 AM
Really nice painting tecnique man...do you use Painter or Photoshop?
I really like the frankstein with the eletricity on the back.
Maybe he could be holding the stuffed animal... he just took it away from the girl you drew (frankie jr. ;) who starts crying, wanting it back...
whatever, you get the picture...
05-30-2004, 08:41 AM
well the idea behind the whole piece is, that the mechanical creature and the little girl are trying to escape from the lab where they were created, the lab will be buring down, and the girl is hanging off the edge of the roof, while the creature is trying to save her, from falling. i will post the composistion sketch soon.
oh and its all done in photoshop :)
05-30-2004, 12:21 PM
Hlo. I'm new here, and I just popped in to say that this is one of the numerous threads why this whole contest is so intimidating.
Besides being technically, er, intimidating, the idea is personal and so good that I'm, er, intimidated.
Sorry, I'd have praised you much higher, but it seems that I haven't any adjectives left to accomplish the job.
05-30-2004, 12:29 PM
Oooooh... sah-weet! Great drawings and awesome paint tests... damn you people for being so good! Well, at least I can learn alot from people like you, Corlinator... inspirational stuff! Keep it up, I wanna see more! :applause:
here's my machineflesh thread if you're interested:
good luck in the contest... I'll be keeping an eye out for your updates!
Hoezit Corlin! I've decided to join the fun, your stuf is just so damn good, it makes me want to draw until I pass out. I like it all and can't wait to see more. Good luck to you.
06-01-2004, 03:13 PM

06-01-2004, 06:20 PM
Looks very cool dude,
You really have a good eye for feeling. Damn wish i could draw like you. I really like the idea that it's not just a drawing but a story, I think that's whats so cool about your idea.
The girl looks Awesome and is really coloured nicely.
06-01-2004, 06:51 PM
Oh I'm sorry! Did I just wet my pants with some spooge!! I did I did!! :)
I have just been Corlinated. These sketches are really really great Corrie Borrie. I love your new colouring style!!
When can we see some composition tests?
Rabbi and Teddy should have a celebrity death match :D
06-01-2004, 07:09 PM
this is a colour rough of the main character, i call him frank, as you can see he has one huge mechanical arm, from the original sketches it wasnt going to be that huge, but i was experimenting with the idea, and it seems to have stuck. well now its on to the composistion that i have been working on!
good luck everybody, the work entering this competition is really amazing.
06-01-2004, 07:21 PM
 you've got some real neat stuff going on here, I love your sketches :buttrock:
06-01-2004, 07:54 PM
HOLY F@#k!!! that is super sweet.... *poops a big one*
Damn dood if you don't win something then I will
I agree with ol' -frOogLe- on the story bit..... takes it away from being just a composition....
06-01-2004, 07:58 PM
WaAa.a.a.a.a....................I think that's going ot be...a wonderful piece....I like the way you are going...:bounce:
06-01-2004, 08:09 PM
Now this is totally awesome! Get your website up Toffie, so we can see more of your work. The lighting in your latest pick is super sweet dude. I think everyone's going to jizz in there pants like me and Speve-O did.
Keep it up man.
06-01-2004, 08:50 PM
thanks for all the positive remarks so far guys, i am glad that i can get you guys excited.
this has been alot of fun so far, now the real work lies ahead, i am currently working on the composistion and damn its mutch tougher than i thought, first off beacuse i am trying a whole new approach in the angle of the shot as well as the shading is also a new experience, beacuse now the light is from the bottom and the shading is at the top.
i am a sucker for punishment, but hey if we dont challenge ourselfs how will we ever be able to know just how far we can push it!
thanks to everyone that has visited my post sofar.
06-01-2004, 08:59 PM
Yeah, now THAT is lookin' mighty sweet. This is going to be a front runner in the contest for sure... can't wait to see more of the girl character!
Keep up the awesome painterly goodness!
Ya-freakin HOOO! My daily dose of Corlination has just been recieved. Really nice work, give me more...

I absolutely love what youve come up with. cant wait for the final composition. Beautiful colour work, i love those rays of light, looks fantastic. Your colour work must defianatley be easier with such great sketches i am truely in awe. Well done, love your style.   :bounce:
MORE UPDATES PLEASE!!!
06-02-2004, 04:03 AM
worderful work man!!
06-02-2004, 08:34 AM
Impressive work seriously !
I really like the lighting in the last concept already ! :buttrock:
06-02-2004, 07:34 PM
just a super quick sketch i did of the little girl, she didnt have the robotic leg at first, but after one or two doodles i started to like the idea, thanks to mindrots idea, i am toying with the idea of her having some or other head brace, beacuse shes young her neck cant support the weight of the brain bowl.
06-02-2004, 07:48 PM
may be just me though but I feel she'd be better with slightly shorter legs.
Oooh-yeah, you're realy enjoying this aren't you, good one Corlin, can't wait to see more.:wavey:
06-02-2004, 08:13 PM
very cute and nice style, I like it, keep ┬┤em coming dude!
06-02-2004, 11:13 PM
Looks really good. I agree that shorter legs could be nice. Is that bunny the one from Sam and Max, or is it just me....super cool!!
06-03-2004, 03:44 AM
It could just be the angle of the robotic leg but flying_P and Nathaniel make a good point. But for her body the legs seem right, its just that she doesnt seem to look as little as a little girl should, if you know what i mean.
Love your ideas and the way your able to colour them up so well, so quickly, More updates pleeessse... :bounce: :bounce:
06-03-2004, 08:58 AM
Looking good.... the little dress is a great idea.....
06-03-2004, 07:22 PM
thanks for the advice about the legs, after reading what you guys said, i realized she does look more older than what i intended her to be, due to her legs.
thanks for pointing this out especially to: flyingP,Nathaniel West and sketchfiend.
i am still working on the final sketch thanks to 0-2, he gave some really neat ideas about a angle problem i had in the drawing.
just have to sort this perspective and pose thing out then i will post the sketch.
06-04-2004, 12:03 PM
superb art work u bring tears to my eyes why am i in this competiton my skills are no where near any of the artist in here again u got some awsome works friend
06-07-2004, 08:21 PM
at last i managed to get this composistion sorted, i thought i would never get this right, but here it is finally, what started out as a A3 drawing ended up A2 in size, it was the only way i could fit in all the details.
i did the basic shading in pencil as a rough guide, so when i colour this sucker it is going to make life a little easier.
cheers for now gotta start colouring!
06-07-2004, 08:45 PM
jeez... wow , amazing sketches , dude !
06-07-2004, 08:53 PM
Arg!!! Splendid !!
06-07-2004, 08:56 PM
basically whats happening in the picture is the wooden beam that "frank" was holding onto while trying to save juniors life has broken and they are both falling towards electrical power boxes.
the building in the background is the castle lab they are trying to escape from, i have tried to capture the moment between victory and disaster.
06-07-2004, 09:00 PM
This is just plain awesome.
One thing though!!! The expression on the girls face . . it seems less like a scream, and more like she just has her mouth open . . maybe once you start colouring the face up, you can experiment with really filling her face with terror!!!
I think you could even go one step further and make the monsters scream even more emotional.
You nailed the perspective . . . is the top of the tower crooked, or is it falling down? Looks a bit strange.
hehe, it reminds me of king kong a bit!! :)
06-07-2004, 09:06 PM
Nice style :-):)
Frank looks amazing, I'm just not too sure about the girl, I can't quite put my finger on it, something is just not right. The rest is damn cool:bowdown:
06-07-2004, 10:01 PM
What ?!....Damn...I am Corlinated !!:D
Great sketch man!
I wait for the next chapiter !!! Go on this great great job !!
It is QUALITY ! (in all senses...line, characters, sensibility...:) )
06-07-2004, 11:54 PM
Nice Corrie.. nice!!! Jou bliksem!!.. :)
Ek kan nou die shots check.. hehehee..
06-08-2004, 04:51 AM
thanks guys for all the crits and coments, i will be repairing alot of the image when i do the digital painting bit, and with light and colour i hopefully will bring out more of the terror that our chracters face
cheers for now :bounce:
06-08-2004, 12:51 PM
Love your style ! Nice drawing.
Wanna see it in colour...
06-08-2004, 05:42 PM
Good stuff man.....
The angle of the girl's foot (the one in the foreground) seems a bit off and twisted.
Great work though....
PS: Get well.....
06-08-2004, 08:21 PM
just started with the colouring still working out the lighting as i go along with the colouring process
06-08-2004, 08:26 PM
this is a close up on the arm detail stil have to add stains and grime but i save that for last
06-08-2004, 09:19 PM
This is looking really awesome Corlen. The lighting is really sweet. Gives a cool moodiness to it. That GI technique is really showing and giving nice results too.
Dig the expression on the Dudes face. His arm is really coloured in nicely too.
Give us more!
This is where things get realy interesting, hey Corlin. That arm looks stunning and it's not even done yet, aaargh BRILIANT!!!
06-08-2004, 10:13 PM
Really nice piece, i love your early drawings.....have you worked in comics before?
You have a style that's really in vogue at the moment.....of course your'e giving it a nice twist....i'm looking forward to seeing it develop in it's final stages.
06-08-2004, 10:19 PM
Love the colour scheme you are going for. You've got a really nice colour quality with this new techinique you are using. I like it very very much. :)
More we need more, the deadline is less than two weeks away!!! Dr, get this man some coffee.
06-09-2004, 06:32 AM
06-09-2004, 09:34 AM
Teach me ol' wise one in the ways of "piant skill" , bud, youre stuff is sweet....i mean youre not even done, youre on youre way there....for sure and your work still looks freaking amazing...I wish i knew how to do it, it would make life so much easier at this point.
My line work is getting there but im at the point where im like..."HOW THE F&#K!!! am i going to do this".... enough rambling...
I love the close up of the arm detail, everything shows up nicely from highlights to showdows and scratchy details in the metal texture.
Awesome work mate, keep the updates coming.  :D
06-09-2004, 09:42 AM

Wow! really impressive work! really, really good. congratulations!:applause:
06-10-2004, 04:49 PM
Great work my friend..Color harmony is very good..........the mood give an impressive dimension, light coming from bottom and the other coming from the outside blue moon..............great.........shadows gonna be very important in this piece, they will be, i think very pleasant to realise...(sorry for english, this forum is a good training for that too.:) ).
Have a good work, i wish you the best..
06-10-2004, 05:44 PM
Wow, this is really coming along! Your colors are really creating a great over all mood in your image. I agree that you should make junior's expression more terrafied, though. Maybe if you tilted and turned it away from the electrical boxes and had the eyes fixed downward. Right now the eyes seem to just stare out into space.
Can't wait to see this piece finished though. It's going to be awesome!
06-10-2004, 06:43 PM
yeah, indeed.. the colors are blending very sweeeeet :)
06-10-2004, 06:45 PM
thanks for all the comments and suggestions especially from goli and evil gerbil i am going to try what you suggested by turning the head away a bit more and try to play with the expressions.
and i am already discovering how the shadow are effecting this as i go along, thanks for pointing this out goli, you have forseen the future:thumbsup:
06-10-2004, 07:00 PM
been working on the body of the creature and on his face
06-10-2004, 07:04 PM
close up on the face and a bit of the body
06-10-2004, 07:54 PM
This is trully outstanding. It is coming very nicely. I'm gonna keep me eye in this thread.
I have a favor to ask you. Would you be so kind as to divuldge your process for creating those realistic rust textures on the metal? I would be much indepted to you if you would share.
06-10-2004, 07:54 PM
Wow . . . the colouring has a wonderful soft quality.
This is going to be very very cool once its complete.
The clock is ticking Corlinator . . . time to get into overdrive mode!! :scream:
06-11-2004, 01:40 AM
man....nothing to say!

Sweet job mate, keep it coming!!!  :D
06-12-2004, 04:46 PM
I must reply to this!
Wonderful cartoony artwork there Corlinator! Better than what would be possible for me!
Ive been too jealous to reply... But i think there is one confusing aspect in your artwork.. The way that big monster is carrying that child is confusing it took me a long time to understand what was part of the boy and what was part of the big monster arm.
Thats only thing i can say about critic wise. I think you would have made it more visible with colors. Just thought you would have wanted to know about it :)
Comment wise this is
  Great!
06-14-2004, 06:19 PM
okay here it is
sorry i only replied now on this, but i have been real busy at work.
step1 - give the line work a base coat colour, it should not be to dark and also not to light find a middle colour.
step2 - i use photographs of metal textures that i overlay in photoshop
step3 - basically depending on how mutch grit you want on your texture keep adding the textures, i use either overlay or softlight in photoshop.
step4 - paint over the layers adding my shadows and light details.
thays it in a nut shell i hope this will do it, sorry about the late reply
06-14-2004, 06:24 PM
been working on the legs and "franks"
huge arm, things are starting to come together, cant wait to finishing all the painted bits so that i can get stuck into the lighting efx
06-14-2004, 06:44 PM
WaoOow ! Nice work mister Corlinator ! I like this style, between real and toon, you do that very very well, it's a pleasure to explore your picture, really. The final will be spectacular ! It's a good composition...perspective...with cables coming to us...curve and opposite curve...well done..great.
Your textures....yup, nothing to say.
So, keep up (:) ) this "high tech king-kong" !!
06-14-2004, 08:10 PM

painting so that i can start playing with some light effects
back to work:thumbsup:
06-14-2004, 08:17 PM

06-15-2004, 12:18 PM

06-15-2004, 07:25 PM
a few more bits that has to be painted in then the lighting efx and i am finished
06-15-2004, 07:31 PM
I love how this piece is developing... great, dynamic upshot and the characters (beautifully designed, BTW) pose really enhance the tension / action. Oh, and I really find your metal texture tutorial very useful... it's so awesome to see how people work and achieve different looks in their artwork. :D
Keep it up, bro... the end is at hand! Good luck!
06-15-2004, 07:46 PM
detail on the character changed the fist hand that was holding the soft toy to a more open frightned hand, gave the character more of a scarred expression
06-15-2004, 09:55 PM
That's great my friend, i like it a lot....quick look..no time you know:D ...but i like it ....colors feels sensual...soft...cool !
Have a good painting, i wish you the best !
see you...very soon...
"go back to my tablet...
