hi y'all,

I visit quite often lately, just for their Daily Sketch Group section. They have a bot running which posts a new topic every day. You can interpret the subject the way you like and draw it accordingly. Quite popular there.

However their bot died and it seems no efforts are made to repair it. New topics are posted a few times by hand but not that consequent.

Anyone feel like adding something similar as a sub section to the 2d wip forum of CGTalk would be cool? I'd certainly join in :) only downside is that it's like stealing their idea, but well, if they don't repair it, I consider it kind of their fault.

anyone interested?

05 May 2004, 09:53 PM
Something like this?
The Fundamentals: Draw 15 Strong Outline Poses (

If this is what you have in ming I could revive this concept.

05 May 2004, 10:11 PM
can't access the last one, must be moderator only :)

umm yea something like this but the power of the DSG's are that they only last one day so you are forced to finish something quick, and you stay away from details. Just your interpretation/imagination and colors and proportion stuff. Not ready? never mind, submit and move on.

Also the topics are randomly chosen from a list which don't have anything to do with each other which makes it fun to keep participating. Also the topics are quite broad, like "being of light", or "war insect" or whatever.

but anyway thanks for the link, I never saw it, I'll definitely give it a try :)

[edit] I just saw that I didn't miss it at all since I actually replied but well, I forgot about it and I wasn't into drawing yet back then I guess :)

05 May 2004, 10:13 PM
Hey, im in for that but don't make it to early cause i will be sleeping then!

why don't you just make a poll ?

05 May 2004, 11:22 PM
Good idea!

05 May 2004, 12:20 AM
Yes I saw this in a few days ago and i thought it was a great idea.
I think they give the idea out every day at a certain time and then everyone has 24 hours to submit their work.. I wanted to do it but I didnt realize they didnt have it anymore.... hm yey lets do that here too!

05 May 2004, 12:40 AM
Sounds interesting, even though it's been quiet lately the "Speed Modelling" forum has thrown out some really cool stuff, I suppose this could be sort of similar, but 2d.

If you make a default sticky thread, and everyone who reply's on that automaticly recieves an email if there's a new post, so you will be notified when somebody posts a new drawing training.

And for the speed drawing, i hate this.... i don't learn from it, you can better organize a "subject drawing" that lasts all day, @ the end of the day everyone post there results and voilla youre learning!

this is more efficcient then speed drawing....

OK this is how I want to Implement this:
* I was thinking of callin the thread: THE DAILY GRIND: Today's topic ******

* 640 x 480
* One day to do the sketch on any medium. Even photos are acceptable.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread

* The topics will be posted every day M-F @ 10:00 am US EST on the 2d forum
* The topics will be picked from the list on this thread ( and the author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads. Maybe we can give some sort of online "medals" to the person who has participated the most on the sessions.

Photos are acceptable? how does that work?

05 May 2004, 03:41 PM
Good point...
I am taking out the Photo rule...

Any more ideas?

05 May 2004, 03:43 PM
Sounds good, Roberto. If you need some more topic suggestions, I'd point you to's "500 list," which was put together a few years ago.

I'll try to participate in these as much as possible.

Oh, and for the size limits... I'd say 650x650 max resolution. Just to accomodate different aspect ratios without squeezing them down into miniscule sizes... If not, 640x480 is fine.

05 May 2004, 05:09 PM
Great, I'm in sketching is something I desperately need practice in. Maybe entrants could state how long they took, was it 5mins or the full 24hours.

Why not make the size limit either 640 x 480 or 480 x 640 to allow for portrait.

05 May 2004, 05:36 PM
awesome, roberto, it's great to see that requests like these are being heared :applause:

if this thing is a succes, maybe it's a good idea to stick this one at the top of the 2d wip forum to keep the topics flowing :)

* I was thinking of calling the thread:
THE DAILY GRIND: Today's topic ******

* 640 x 480 or 480 x 640

* They can be done on any medium.

* Only original compositions. No "tributes" o plagiarizing.

* The topics will be posted every day M-F @ 10:00 am US EST.

* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.

* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. they must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.

* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.

* The thread will be CLOSED EXACTLY 24hours later.

* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.

* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.

Maybe we can give some sort of online "medals" at the end of the year to the person who has participated the most on the sessions.

Ill post the first thread on Tuesday June 1st.

05 May 2004, 03:38 PM
Ey Roberto, any specific reason why the thread is closed after 24 hours? If I don't have time some day I might want to do the topic later, right? You can also exclude those people from the participation thread of course, whatever :)

sounds great nevertheless

05 May 2004, 04:26 PM
I'm in this as well (I desperately need to start sketching again); is there any idea as to when this will start?

I used to participate in DSG over on conceptart occasionally, and really enjoyed it. I don't like the idea of a competition sort of thing. I guess it's alright to hand out "medals" at the end of the year for most frequent poster or whatever, but it kind of takes away from the point of a daily sketch thing. it turns it into a competition of sorts.

also, can people post multiple pics? I think it's a good idea, if a topic really hits you, you should be able to post as much as you want.

I think that 640 x 480 should be the max size that you can post as an image - but pics shouldn't be rejected because they are too big, links should be allowed in that case, with a smaller thumbnail.

I'm really excited about this, it was depressing when the DSG went down.

05 May 2004, 01:54 AM
Sounds like a really cool idea... where is this subforum going to be located? 2D WIP... correct me if I am wrong.

I am in dire need of improving my drawing skills... and if I can apply 3-4 hours a week to something like this, I am sure it will be worth it.

05 May 2004, 01:52 AM
This will be ideal for improving. CGChallenge improved my 3d skills, so hopefully this will improve my sketchiness.

05 May 2004, 05:23 AM
Im game. I love to draw but I find most of the time that I spend on my art is coming up with an idea. My work is always much better when someone gives me a topic or a subject and then lets me roll with it.

I've been out of school for a year now. I need to get back in the groove of drawing all of the time. Hopefully this will get me motivated again to start filling up more sketchbooks.

Now if I can ever get my scanner working (slamming the car trunk down on it and shattering the glass is NOT a good idea) then maybe I can post some stuff too.

as far as I understand from roberto's post: indeed the threads will be posted in the 2d wip forum. Also this will happen at 10.00 EST, which is

16.00 dutch time
15.00 british time

just fyi :)

21 hours to go, I can't wait. Pencils have been sharpened, several wastepaper baskets have been strategically placed and easy access to first floor window mapped out.

or was I wrong about the timezones or something?

06 June 2004, 06:21 PM
animations! :) kinda liek the 10 second club, or how we had animating the little juice box.. :)

06 June 2004, 07:48 PM
Is there a limit on the number of images we can create for each session?

Topic suggestions:
- Harlequin
- Red light district / Moulin Rouge
- Buffalo herding
- Bull-fighting
- Greek mythological figures
- Portrait of a statue
- Self-portrait
- Head study
- The view outside (from nearest window)

06 June 2004, 08:04 PM
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them).

06 June 2004, 08:34 PM
Maybe it's just me, but it seems the daily sketching at has a lot of space/aliens/monster-creature/war-weapon themes ...?

I'd really like to see more varied themes here, including things taken from ordinary life ... I mean it doesn't have to be boring because it's not fiction, eh?

EDIT: Examples...
Luscious lips
Embarrassing situation
Haunted house
In the meanwhile, at the villain's hideout
Race driver and vehicle
City landscape
The reason the wheel was invented

I don't think too many of the ones over at conceptart were sci-fi type topics. Some were, there were quite a few, but there were a lot of other topics. A lot of topics were open to a scifi interpretation.

Just a general thought - I prefer topics that are very open to interpretation - not too broad (like "sky") but not too narrow (like "a shark that's biting a man")

06 June 2004, 09:25 PM
Sounds fun, I'm in. Some topic ideas...

Dappled Light across the plain
Sour Taste
Time for Bed
Hells Last Stand
Very Last Breath
Stretching to reach
Waking up to snow
Siege of the basilica
Phosphorescent Fish
Moment of Enlightenment
Meteor Storm
Dusk on the rooftops
Arcane Fireworks
Twilight's Gleaming
Gun Powder Season
The Land Of Nod
The Theory of Reflection
Hand Held Killing Machine
Telepathic Forms
Walk of the Dead
Steam driven Flight
Tracer Fire
Night Vision
To Live Forever
Clockwork Pig
Scratch the Itch
The Warriors Code
Sword of Doom
Burn Out

06 June 2004, 11:04 PM
Well in case you guys run out of ideas, since you have to post one every day:

Bad news,
The red button,
Out of time
Under my bed
In the closet
Lost opportunity

Ok that is all I got.
lets see if I can do something for free fallen.

06 June 2004, 01:03 AM
Great idea! At the rate its going here, all my forum needs will eventually be all compressed into CGtalk! :surprised

hmm.. my brain isnt to active today, but heres a handful of ideas.. I only really skimmed over the previous ideas.. sorry if I repeat somebodies.

Astral Being
White/Dark knight
Forgotten Sanctity
Pins and Needles
Evil Twin
Hint of Beauty
Whispers at Twighlight
False Identity
Sticky Situation
Blood Lust
Chew the Fat
Locked in the Attic
A Widows Dream
Untwisting the Twisted
Covered from Head to Toe
Hairs at Attention / Pulling Teeth
Lost and Found
Aches and Pains
Small Wonders

Thats about it for now.. I'll come post a few more when my mind feels like wandering :)

06 June 2004, 02:56 AM
If there's one everyday, then perhaps we should have a link to it setup, or a forum setup (speed painting? who knows) So that it can be accessed easier,
Much like how has it on the topright of all their forums - helps to access a lot easier

maybe like an extra button under logout, or in that black area between and the cgnetwroks/register etc buttons

since i know having 1 icon reserved each day limits the other guys on featured work.

altho that would take a lot of work, so if anything, do it for the opening site (just the index) ?

06 June 2004, 04:04 AM
IMO, as far as topic suggestions, I would go for introducing different elements into each drawing, such as fog, reflections, refractions, drappery, action, flow,, and so on. This way, instead of just making compositions, we're actually concentrating on improvement. I agree that practice is a large chunk of the pie, but study will help everyone improve.

---------------------------------------------------- (

06 June 2004, 03:57 PM
For these topics i'm not trying to be too philosophical because that can scare a lot of people from drawing :

Monkeys with guns
Man eater
Attack of the Fruits
Planet Earth 2
Da Vinci-style sketch
Giant trees
Crime scene
After it rains
David vs goliath
Friendly zombie
Middle ages-Futuristic hybrid weapon

06 June 2004, 04:11 PM
What about something like Love or great stories of our time, like Don Quixote, Alice in Wonderland, etc?
(if someone already mesioned this, sorry)

06 June 2004, 07:59 PM
How about a saved in the nick of time theme?

06 June 2004, 11:15 PM
wow, a complete new forum and this thread stickied! cool Leigh, thanks!

06 June 2004, 07:29 AM
So will the old topics remain open or will they be locked after 24 hours? Just asking because the brief stated they would be locked after 24 hours, and the old one's still accesable. Just wondering.

06 June 2004, 07:50 AM
i think they should remain open. I mean, what's the point in closing a perfectly good excercise thread? Never too late to draw an idea if you ask me. I unlocked the first one because I had one to submit (abusing my Mod privelages :D )

06 June 2004, 08:23 AM
I think closing the threads is a good idea....
That will make it a bit more focused. Just one thread to post in, so you know where to look for the most recent additions. And since there will always be one open sketch-thread there will always be a topic for your sketches. And you will be forced to change the subject of your sketches constantly, so you can´t just stick with the "Futuristic weapon of massdestruction" because you liked it....

With an increasing number of themes there will be less contributions for each if the old ones stay open, so that you can choose whatever thread you like....

Am I making any sense at all?

I don´t think so:blush:

(With "you" I don´t mean anyone in particular :p )

06 June 2004, 08:33 AM
Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads

leaving threads open makes roberto's job harder I guess.

Also threads will go out of order (unless there is an option for you mods to default sorting on creation date or something)

Tho I do agree. In the weekends i'm not always near my computer, chances are I still like the subject and I want to do it later.

06 June 2004, 11:26 AM
I vote for closing the thread, its a Daily sketch group right so if you fancy sketching just check the days subject, its about the idea at that moment, there will always be an open thread

I guess you could always do a sketch & post it in the WIP section if you get inspired by previous a subject?

just my 2 pence worth.

06 June 2004, 12:27 PM
Hi guys, great initiative this one. I hope do something to it, in mean while i had an idea, y not nave a special subject which will run onver the week, and ppl could post a tutorial of how they did it.
Sorry my english

06 June 2004, 01:20 PM
Yeah I agree with Ivars, we should definately close the thread.

I think it would also be quite kewl to have some kind of motivation to keep sketching, like some sort of prize given at the end of the year, and maybe a mention or something for the best sketch artist at the end of each month.

I don't really know, but it would be kewl to have some kind of motivation.

Maybe you should emphasise the fact that this is a sketch thread, and that you shouldn't post previous work. Some people have been!

06 June 2004, 02:43 PM
Ok how about this...

We could select the best sketch of a given week...

The people would have the whole weekend to select their favorites..

06 June 2004, 03:12 PM
Im all for a sketch of the week thingy. To keep things motivated.

Im for closing old threads as well, just to keep the focus on the daily theme's.

I think it's a good idea to make it so that the topics are frozen in place, but not locked. That way people can still comment on them, and even post if they really want to, but the topics will always be in order and once you get a page or more, the focus really stays towards the top.

06 June 2004, 05:26 PM
Topic Ideas:

Bring Your Parent to School
Bring Your Kid to Work
Mexican UFO's
Dodge Ball
Things That Stink
Who's The Boss?

yeah, that's where I got the idea. :) It works so well, since then the topics don't get mixed up.

06 June 2004, 03:55 PM
So is this thing only going on on the weekdays or what? I hope not. Saturdays and Sundays are my days off usually. Those are the days when I actually have the time to devote to these sketches. If not, can someone post the subjects for Saturday and Sunday on Fridays. Same time rules will apply.

the sparky
06 June 2004, 05:38 PM
yeah, I want weekend sketches. I don't really want to vote every weekend. I guess it would be kind of cool at the end of a month or two to see what the collected best sketches of the month were (so every week we vote and a sketch or two from each thread wins and at the end of the month we can see them all collected in one thread). But the voting interferes with the daily sketching.

How about at the end of the month we have a vote, and people resubmit their favorite sketch of their own for the month or nominate someone else's sketch. Once everyone has sumbited theirs or submitted someone else's (either one, that way no one gets forgotten) the voting starts.

This is an awesome idea! This should be a good way to start getting my (currently non-existent) sketching skills into shape, don't know if I'll post to much for now until I'm a little better, but I'll sketch everyday.

I agree with the sparky, I would love weekend sketches, especially because that's when I have the most time for things like sketching. It would also be great it if it was easier to vote on the sketch of the week, maybe set it up so that you have a couple main judges and the winner from the last week each pick out their favorites images, let's say a total of five and then post a poll with the five images attached so it we don't have to go digging through page after page of threads trying to find that one great one.

I haven't gotten a chance to sketch yet but look forward to it... anyway, I'm for sketch topics every day of the week and threads being closed. I don't like the idea of voting, it would make it feel more like a contest instead of just good fun and practice.

Some ideas:

1)You know might be able to use these sketch and other speedpaint threads to quickly put together some pdf collections. These could be very simple, even community built as there are several free PDF products. With a quick scrapbook type title page with cgtalk urls and info -maybe an ad for EXPOSE etc it might be a good promo tool. Allow art websites to freely distribute it and you get lots of free visibility for the artists and cgtalk.

The other benefit is that by moving contests into PDF format you could then delete the threads after a while and link to the PDF which is less bandwidth hogging -especially using one of the free PDF file compressors.

2) Maybe the voting could use a poll format instead? Might have to list each participant, and if the poll system allows add a box for 'other' so they can write in any latecomers, and then just allow to check the favorite or allow a 1 thru 4 score for each artist so even the 'non winners' can get a score.

I think nominations by Roberto or somebody else would be cool.. however that would mean the voting would have to span the whole week or you have to create a new voting thread for every subject. Maybe it is possible to add a voting system to the thread after the 24 hours have passed?

I'm starting out with art and have no skills to speak of, so would also like to see some topics that would encourage studies on technique .e.g. it would be great to see how people would interpret the following:

- big and small
- light and dark
- long and short
- wide and thin
- smooth and rough
- cold and warm
- shades of gray

space and perspective:

- up close
- far away
- view from above

and for a little extra fun...

- wildcard (anything at all!)

Roberto: pls disregard these suggestions if they don't fit with the theme of the exercise. Also, thanks for taking the time to look after the group! hope to see more of your sketches :)

I had the same questions, and I bought a few books about the subjects. I do understand the principles now but indeed I didn't get the chance yet to practice them in the DSG. However those books were really worth buying and I learned a lot from them. If you are interested in the titles feel free to PM me :)

but I second your request: some topics without subjects (e.g. environments etc) would be cool. Or maybe I just need to push my imagination a little further :p

I have a suggestion; maybe it's a dull idea but I think that a lot of us could further the benefits of sketching daily if [whenever is the case] each author could comment about color, lighting and composition on their work [specially the pros], or some other way of discussing topics like that.

Sir Patroclo

06 June 2004, 01:27 PM
even more topics....

Round here
Perfect blue buildings
Rain king
Ghost train
Hard candy
New frontier
Black and blue

(ps. Does anybody get it?)

Edit: Yeah, I second Sir Patroclo. A little bit about the thoughts behind the painting would be great. Not the "..and further more I just thought the idea of a playboy bunny running rampage on the mansion would be cool..", but rather, "..I first made a black and white painting of the girl in the pink g-string to better see where I should put the shading. Afterwards I added color in three different layers"
I'm rambling....sorry.

06 June 2004, 06:24 PM
i think that a brief paragraph about the process you took in making the piece would be a great addition!

06 June 2004, 12:38 AM

Tenderness of wolves
Higher beings command

Barrel 'o monkeys
Larger than life
In your face!
Cheaters never prosper

The beating of the drums
Large minions

Occasionaly (once a week, once a month?) we could just have a pure drawing exercise. Task today is to draw a (insert every day object here). Not quite as interesting as the challenges are now but it would be valuable practise and help make the thread ideas we have now last a little longer.

Just to clarify incase I haven't made myself clear above, the task would be to draw things like:
Carrot, telephone, radio, vase, teapot, milk carton etc.
Just every day objects that you have to draw without worrying about makeing a clever interpretation of, just pure hand eye coordination sketching practise.

06 June 2004, 02:26 PM

For the love of god please raise the image size limit. The quality of the submitted pictures is getting better from day to day. It's really a shame to see them that small.
And when you do something yourself it's even worse to downsize it that much. 800x600 should be ok as well for todays internetconections. The majority uses broadband anyway...

06 June 2004, 07:54 PM
I suggested these on todays (#21) sketch where there's a discussion about book titles going on, but I'll post them here too, since this is probably the more appropriate place for them.

Through the Looking Glass
Brave New World
Black Prince
Lord of the Flies
Giants in the Earth
Inherit the Wind
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Long Day's Journey into Night
Stranger in a Strange Land
A Wrinkle in Time

made in uterus: heh, I had that on my list too, it's a really good title I think.

06 June 2004, 07:55 PM
I think this book theme is an amazing idea. Some stories are filled with great concepts and imagery and I can't wait to sink my teeth into 'em. Sometimes the titles are enough to get me started.

Just for the sake of the titles, I think a self-help book title week would be interesting:
Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus
Don't Sweat the Small Stuff
What to Expect When You're Expecting
Think and Grow Rich
Unlimited Power

Other books:
Satanic Verses
Peter Pan
Call of the Wild
On the Road
All the President's Men
Murder on the Orient Express
To Kill a Mockingbird
Catcher in the Rye
Moby Dick
100 Years of Solitude
Around the World in 80 Days
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Lastly we could do a week of authors -- either a portrait or a scene from any one of their books:
J.R.R. Tolkein
Terry Pratchett
Victor Hugo
Ernest Hemmingway
Edgar Allen Poe

My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.
What're you going do? Charge me with smoking?
I'm pulling back the curtain. I want to meet the wizard.
You met me at a very strange time in my life.
That's right... who's laughing now... who's laughing *now*?
