I saw on another sketch site they did a tarot series, and if I'm not mistaken, took the best ones to actually make a tarot deck.

So it's my suggestion to make a series of all the tarot titles, so we could collect all the best ones for a tarot deck.

We could also do this for a standard card deck! Topics like "the Queen of Hearts" or the "2 of Diamonds" could offer up some interesting paintings.

Perhaps a template that we could paint in, so that the number part of the card is always the same when we put together the deck.

I personally think it would be awesome.

03-12-2005, 12:23 AM
Hey we already did Tarot... clicky (
Fun idea tho.

Hey we already did Tarot... clicky (
Fun idea tho.

That thread is cool, a lot of great stuff in it, including a link to the originators I was thinking of. linky (

I was thinking more along the lines of subjects being "3 of Wands" or "The Empress", once a week, finally culminating in a full tarot deck, that we could print out to use.

I think it would be really cool, if someone created a little template for them too, so they had similar text, and fit together really well. I'd say just a black and white outline, like a colouring book, that one could "colour", or just paint over. It would make for a lot of fun.

My suggestion would be just once a week though, so that we could have plenty of normal topics too.

03-13-2005, 01:28 AM

hey, seriously now, I agree with the song theme, most of song's name would make good topics....

I'll Spread My Wings...

Our Pets!

And an idea for a new type of daily sketch thing: Illustration. You paint a picture inspired by whatever the topic is, and then write a short story to go along with it. Say the topic is "Broken Hearts", then each person would paint a picture like usual, but then have to write a short story to go along with it. Just an idea though. :)

04-30-2005, 03:27 PM
I must admit, I'm confused as all hell when I come to the sketch of the day/week forum. I honestly don't understand what it is or how it works. Where the skecthes come from, obviously artists, but are they posting in a specific forum, thread or do you just pull them from any part of the CG talk website?? Not to insight flames here but it just seems like a mess with no information. I think you could clean the thread up a bit and add some info for people who come here for the first time, so that they understand what's going on.

Every day Roberto (forum moderator) picks one of them (or he's own idea) and make's a new thread with that subject it in the CGTalk Daily Sketch Forum. This will be the topic of what the artist's will draw. Voting happens 7 days after every full weak. Basically there's one weak with sketches before one can vote for the sketches that were before that weak. Hope I made myself clear. :/

While we wait for the movie to come to us, I would suggest this title.

Thanks Lystmaler. Sorry I don't mean to tell people how to run this thread, especially since I've never participated. You've obviously got a system that works. It's just that it's can be confusing for people coming here for the first time.

One suggestion, a sticky thread with the rules and info at the very top of the Daily Sketch section may be a good idea.

At the moment you've got the Comix Strip Thread, but I don't understand how that relates to sketch of the day. I did eventually find the rules in the footer of Rob's post, easy to miss becuase it looks like part of a giant signature, if you get what I mean.

Anyway I realise now that this is the wrong type of suggestion for the suggestion thread.

Anyway I realise now that this is the wrong type of suggestion for the suggestion thread. It might be the wrong place, but it's allso the best place I think.
Roberto will have to take this ting futhurer, but I must say that you got some points.

The comic thead got the same concept as the Daily Sketch Group, but you got 1 month to make you'r "Sketch" instead of one day or week, so that's what it does here.

While I agree with you wholeheartedly about the issue of cultural/cult topics being an exclusion point for people unaware of said topic, I guess it may also be said that many of these are regarded as "classics" of their time, so therefore afford a lot of inspiration (like Frankenstein, for example). I'm not a huge fan of Star Trek myself (although Patrick Stewart kicks many points of ass), but I can still have fun just sketching something pleasant.
Why not just sketch you misunderstanding/hatred of the topic? A good way to vent and it's constructive! :)

Heroes of comedy
Heroes of Horror

Ah...too much portrait type of things come with the heroes, but's a strong theme.

How'bout computergame's week. They've been taking over the business for a while. We could have a week with our versions of games of different genres:

ingame - The next first-person-shooter (rip it apart, please!)
ingame or cover - The next racing game
ingame - The next adventure game
ingame or cover - The next strategy game
ingame or cover - The next sports game
ingame or cover - The next retro-game (old games renewed)
ingame - The next big game for children

06-06-2005, 02:38 PM
Heres one: 320x200.

It bugs me when people make such awesome art and talk about it, but I can't see it because i still have freakin dial up. So we could do one where the maximum size is 320x200. You could even do multiple 320x200s and make a collage of it. Ooh fun!

How about "Game design week"? Each day have people design props or characters or any number of things for game.

I posted this idea in the anniversary ideas thread but would like to repeat myself about the cult of 3d anaglyphs! Anaglyph free-ware maybe found here. (

It's easy! Take two j-pegs! One represents your left eye! The other is your right eye! Plug them into anaglyph free-ware and PRESTO!!

here's an example. Okay- I admit it. This one was done with geometries and opacity maps in max - but I'll do one soon in PS to prove that in can be done quite simply by all who are 2d!!!

06-08-2005, 09:24 AM

I am new here. Just been getting back into drawing. But I have always wanted a couple of suggestions for drawing and here they are. The first one I use allot, the second is just funny to see what people can come up with.

1 - Go outside and look at the clouds - draw the first thing you see that resembles something.

2- I cut the cheese

I hope that soon I will be more a participant, than a viewer/lurker.

06-12-2005, 12:52 PM
I saw this yesterday and thought it could be a great topic with different interpretations:

Batman vs. Darth Vader

I know you would just love to see these guys duke it out. Think about it: Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, is a genius with ninja-like abilities and virtually unlimited financial resources. Plus, he has bat ear things on his mask! This guy, from what I've heard, beat Superman at one point. :D

Darth Vader, the eeevil Sith lord is reasonably intelligent but definitely has unlimited resources along with his Force powers and skills with a lightsaber. He also has millions (or even billions!) of evil goons he can call upon at a moment's notice.

Who wins? You decide!

A two-part (possibly two-thread) idea:

Part I - Something simple: Create a sketch of an object that you like to draw/paint. Emphasis on simplicity and speed. Try not to take over an hour.

Part II - Conglomeration: Based on the entries in part I, take as many of them as you want and conglomerate them into a collage or arrangement or something. Fun!

Traditional fractal

Look at a fractal ( and make a traditional painting or sketch of it.
(Wouldn't it be hard to tell if you used filters??)

When I took an art class back in high school we did this little project where we took a photo, broke it down into grid units, and had each person in the class do their imitation of one specific block on the grid. After everyone had finished their grid block we combined the full set in proper order to reproduce the initial image--in varied styles/techniques. I think it would be a lot of fun if we could put something like that together here, granted it would have to be carefully organized so everyone gets their own spot and we don't end up with 'competing' images. Also, the way we went about it, which makes it more fun imo, was to distribute each grid unit to a person to copy before anyone sees the full and final image.

Here's an example of how it might work:

and the single grid unit per person like so:

If I can help this along in any way let me know. :) (btw, the above is a personal photo, so it's free to use for this, though it's not ideal since it has a lot of boring areas)

-Animation (make a short animation, even one as simple as a little dot flying around a blank field)
-The redcoats are coming!
-Common expressions illustrated (think "cold feet", "food for thought", "a blank slate", stuff that you could make a picture out of)
-Food, glorious food!

A dust in the eye

As much as I'd love to keep pushing my collaborative painting idea, I have to admit it isn't very practical as a regular DSG topic. Maybe I'll start a separate thread (here or in the parent WIP forum) and try to draw some interest when I get a better photo for it.

Anyhow, I really started this post to make some more topic suggestions.
-Light vs. Dark
-Demon vs. Angel
-Heaven vs. Hell
And of course:
-Good vs. Evil

They are just too historically repetitive and interesting for me to pass up. :D

'Advertisements the way the Old Masters would have done them.'

-- Choose a modern product (i.e Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Nokia, etc) and produce an advertisement for it in the style of one of your favorite Old Masters.

I.E- Coca-cola in the style of Vermeer.
This would produce some cool works, no?:bounce:

i just examined some of my old painting-sins.. (and was shocked..) so what about:

everybody draws a little good-bad tutorial illustrating one widespread flaw/weakness..
like for example the ellipse of a mug drawn with bad perspective so that it appears to be pointed instead of rounded.. and so on..

"the '10 centers of interest'-day" (should be interesting..)
"the 'no center of interest'-day" (should be interesting too..)
