-What about this?? ... - LOST IN MY MIND -

08 August 2004, 03:49 PM

There have been a lot of potential "funny" topics lately, like "and then there was silence" and "dogs and their owners". I'd like to see some more environment topics, more movie-style, so the participants have to think of an extremely cool environment or building or whatever, along with composition. I love to bring emotions in my pictures, so one can really feel the intentions of the image. Anyone agree with me on this? I'm a fan of Ryan church and I'd love some topics in his line of work.

examples which come unto my mind instantly:

the road to heaven

the lost civilisation
chemical war
murder planet
deserted city

Last but not least:

The worm that never got far because the villagers chased him down but the worm's wife had some babys that graduated from college and got eaten by the villagers' dogs and then the storm came erasing the whole village and worms but God was on their side and made so that everyone could fly and the villagers and worms made peace between them and built a new city in the sky but God didn't want any new towns so he made a lightning storm to burn the city down and everyone lived happily ever after.

So, are we going to have something big for sketch number 100?

How about:

100 years in the future
100 ways to die
100 Helens agree
100 hell monkeys on fire (kind of a wrap up of the most common topics)
100 days of drawing
Top 100 top 10 lists
Tribute to a sketch group
This is not the best sketch in the world, it's just a tribute.

09 September 2004, 01:02 PM
Yeah this 100 thing may be a good topic

Here are some more suggestions:

100 ways to lose
100 robot monkeys from hell running rampage (another mash-up)
100 steps to heaven
99 mistakes, this one's gotta be right
100? I need at least 1000!
100 brushstrokes (count 'em!)
100 miles to far (or kilometers, whatever)

09 September 2004, 01:18 PM
more 100s...

100 ways to say you're sorry
100 reasons to be sorry
100 miligrams, and I still feel nothing!
100 year war
100 year itch
100 different styles
100 years young!
The greatest 100 sports disasters
100? I thought you said 10!
100? I thought you said 1000!

Hi I have an idea i would like to see in the Daily Sketch 100...

The topic is "Double Meanings" (subject name is open to negotiacion lol)
The idea is to sketch common-use composite words with double meanings. Even the most simple would make nice a sketch.

For example:

Fast Food: food on the run.
Milk Teeth: a tooth made of milk
Middle Age: Big Age and Small Ages sandwich brother.
Hijack: Jack saying hi.
Speed braker: a man who brakes speed for a living.

I know some are far-fetched but then again some must be and its fun and I hope you get the point. There are millions and I dont want to ruin them by saying all I can think of. Wind pipe, wind instrument... just pick a dictionary and you'll find tons of them.

Oh well thats all I have to say about that...

09 September 2004, 04:53 AM
Funny idea...but what about a cheesy

- everything Golden

HAHA, whatever topic was chosen, it would have to be executed as GOLDEN!

That Avatar Fight Club was really fun! I think we should do something similar every once in a while, if not exactly the same thing.

Some other ideas on the same theme:

Steal Other Sketcher's Style (do a drawing topic in one of the other daily sketcher's style)

Portrait Group Fight Club (original, I know.)

Beat up Wally (provide a sketch of a character, sketchers try to make original ways to mangle him)

Soul Caliber X - Avatar Battle (draw your avatar as if they were a character in a popular fighting game)

Avatar - The MMORPG (draw your avatar as if he/she was in a Role Playing game)

The Chi of Avatar - Avatar Fight Club set in Feudal Asia

Avatars of the Round Table - Avatar Fight Club in Feudal Europe

I have an idea, why don't we do another series of works with a theme, either a bunch in a row, like a weeks worth, or once a week for the forseeable future, with the same theme? that theme being character/creature/vehicle/environment design. ----So we could stretch our creative musles in a way other than just plain cleverness.

I'm thinking along the lines of:

Post-apocolyptic peasant
Future cop
Fantasy Warrior-priest
Daemonic Cauldron
Temple of the Sky
Hover wheelchair name a few. I know it's closer to what we'd do anyways, if it weren't for the challenge, but on the other hand, it would be really interesting seeing all different ideas for some really similar concepts. I think it could be truly inspirational.

What do you all think?

I think the best topics leave a lot of room for interpretation and imagination. Old cliches and sayings seem to create some cool ideas, especially when they're ambiguous. The best ones are starting gates for stories that can go anywhere.

And will people stop posting ideas like Life, War, Alien, Swordsman, etc?!? I stopped reading them after page 3 or so... Topics have to inspire the artists! Some of the good ideas done so far really create stories, or make the artist think of something, and possibly ironic topics create really funny and imaginative results!

Here's some of my ideas, and I apologize if I'm repeating any topics. :

One man's trash is another's treasure

Things that go bump in the night

"I'm back from the future, and this is what I saw/brought home"

It gets better with age

Just like clockwork

"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't do it"

Must be something in the water...

Maybe you've been brainwashed too...

They'll be here any minute now

"Show off"

Multifunctional furniture (Car-Couches, etc)

Junkbot (a robot made out of an everday object)

A day at the races (it'd be cool to see how many different things people would race on)

You had to be there

Call of the Wild

I tried to come up with ones with lots of possibilities and inspirational... can't wait to see the upcoming sketches!

A better place to live.

09 September 2004, 05:20 PM
I did not read the whole thread so there might be some repetition :D

Defect On Arrival
Job fairytales
Maybe I should check back another time???

Just a remark: I must say that I like very literal themes such as 'my other car is a...' or 'when hamsters attack' much less than more abstract themes such as 'smashed, broken and forgotten' or 'not that again' because more literal themes already decide what needs to be in your drawing.

Sorry if any of mine have been mentioned already. If so, just disregard (didn't read through all 30 pages of topic ideas). Some of these were derived from song/album names or references/inspirations from games or books. But, taken out of context, they could make for some interesting artistic inspiration. 11 November 2004, 11:10 PM

this isn't a suggestion for a topic but an idea, to continue the talk about encouraging people to post their pics and practice to refine their skills... I think that besides the sketch of the week award we (I say we and i never vote:blush: , 'cause it takes so much time, but that's another issue) should vote a level up award, to praise the evolution of people who have demonstrated improvement from their early sketches. That way the encouragement not necessarily goes to the most skilled, but the one who's ready to try new things, and to work hard; in other words, if you are good but you maintain your level throughout the time, you are far from getting the award.

It sounded clear in my head but now i guess i explained bad. Hope it's understandable.

Sir Patroclo

11 November 2004, 11:49 PM
I like Sir P's idea - (and great website by the way!)

A few more ideas:
Is there a doctor in the house?
November Rain
Performance Anxiety
Educational Assitance
What a ride!

I like the idea of doing a play on words - for example a phrase like "water table" could mean where the water is geologically or a table made of water. What if we did some like that?
It doesn't have to be any specific topic, but make it where we must draw a "non-literal" sketch for that day's topic.

11 November 2004, 03:51 AM
It sounded clear in my head but now i guess i explained bad. Hope it's understandable.

Sir Patroclo
Sounds clear enough and great to me (being one of those people that needs such encouragement!)

I thought a little bit of a story might help since some people complained about the topics being too short and vague.

- Bill, the turkey swordsman, faces his nemesis, Charlie the snow demon. Who will win in this fight to the finish?

11 November 2004, 12:57 AM
we (...) should vote a level up award, to praise the evolution of people who have demonstrated improvement from their early sketches.
