View Full Version : Ma2: Lone Wolf, Mr_joshua (3D)

05-25-2004, 04:54 AM (

Here is another character from MechAssault2: Lone Wolf. This is the in-game cinematic model of the player character.

The color of the red areas of the suit and the glowing bits can be customized in multiplayer. These colors then carry over to any vehicle or mech you commandeer. Originally the player's name was going to go on the chest plate and the back plate as seen in the concept. This was deemed too much work for the benefit and was dropped.

The rendered image below was chosen to be included in the "Into the Pixel" Exhibition at E3 this year.

The model is around 7000 polys with 2 512s and a 128 with normal, spec and reflection maps. The readout on his visor animates.

I'll try to get some in game shots, a shot of his back and wires shortly [more like tomorrow].

the outline seems so clean and no angles at all.

05-25-2004, 12:36 PM

i Love how much the real thing looks like the concepts... thats just amazing!

05-25-2004, 01:00 PM
wow, post the wire please :bounce:

05-25-2004, 01:07 PM
Sorry, I like + respect a lot of the 3D on this professional forum that makes the front page, but this one leaves me cold. I was even caught in the thought, "is his head too small?" and, "what would it be like getting caught in an elevator with this character?" Generic responses only.

05-25-2004, 01:29 PM
very great work !!
I especially love the detail on the helmet ...

05-25-2004, 01:31 PM
Awsome work man !!! :buttrock:

05-25-2004, 01:55 PM
Amazing job!
Althought he has a "heavy protection armor" he still has a fantastic flexibility feeling! I love it!
Congratulations!

05-25-2004, 02:19 PM
Beautiful as usual Mr_Joshua.

Better than the wonder-twins.

I would like to see your wires as well. Especially a close up on the face.

05-25-2004, 02:19 PM
god damn it, why can't it be a PC game. :-( Ooooh how I love MechWarrior games..... on PC. :-)

Awesome model, I'd be curiouse to see wireframes too for the ingame lowrez model.

05-25-2004, 02:20 PM
that is some oustanding detail for only 7k polys. great stuff, would definitely like to see a wireframe.

05-25-2004, 02:53 PM
i agree, beautiful work, and yes please some wires, let us be born a new in your genius. seriously wicked work, and your website was impressive, concepting and modeling, and a badass at both. well done sir.

05-25-2004, 02:54 PM
HOLY JEZUS, just beautifull, concept done in Photoshop and model in ? And I would love to see some unsmoothed and smoothed wires from that model pretty pretty please :D ? Great job , good luck on the rest of the prodcut, but itll be ok if it resembles this piece of magnificent work...

05-25-2004, 03:08 PM
How long have you been doing 3d? And how long did it take you to get your 2d skills up to that level? or is it just natural skill?

05-25-2004, 04:07 PM
aaaa man this is beutyful work
really inspireing

05-25-2004, 04:11 PM
and with few pols too. Great, just great!!!

05-25-2004, 04:13 PM

That model is so well done that If he was real I would date him in a heartbeat

And for the record, I'm male myself !

:applause:

05-25-2004, 04:22 PM
Pretty Impressive. Love the texture detail that went into it.

05-25-2004, 04:39 PM
:buttrock: Amazing model. Man, I don't even know what to say. I love it! Keep up the great work.

05-25-2004, 05:47 PM
Thats a realy cool character!
I love the outfit.

05-25-2004, 06:00 PM
That's terrific work.

05-25-2004, 06:10 PM
wow man that looks the business, and 7000 polys - what do you eat for breakfast.....

05-25-2004, 06:27 PM
wonderful. i like it.

05-25-2004, 06:44 PM
Yeah, great work on the model man. I am actually looking forward to playing the game as well. ;)

I saw the in-game trailer the other day and he does indeed look just as awesome in-game. :) Even better with the lighting. :)

05-25-2004, 08:29 PM
yeah very great work :applause:

05-25-2004, 08:37 PM
very good modeling !

05-25-2004, 09:01 PM
I like the character and parts of him look really great, but I think the cloth part of his outfit looks too much like solid plastic and doesn't look like cloth.

Other than that looks fantastic.

05-25-2004, 09:13 PM
Thanks everybody!

It's funny to hear so many people talking about how 7000 polys isn't much. Coming from the PS2, 7000 polys with all the shaders the Xbox can do is like heaven.

Darknon: Here is the official site for MechAssault 2 - You should be able to find info about it very easily on the net. The most important thing to know about MA2 is that you should buy it. :)

McSpirit: Sorry but I don't think I should post the normal map. I don't want to help the competition too much. ;) I can say that for the most part the normal map was painted in grayscale and then converted to a normal map with a PS plugin.

sswift: Eye of Thundera give me sight! That logo on his chest is the logo for the Wolf Dragoons. I didn't come up with it.

baby: Yes there was some touch up to the E3 render. Mostly on the profile where you could see polys.

hertzchim: You can't please everybody. Guessing from your pic, sig and website we are just not into the same kind of art. Perhaps you would like it more if I worked in some melting genitals being eaten by bats. :P

Jamaludin: The concept was done mostly in Painter, but a bit was done in Photoshop. Modeling in Max. Textures in Photoshop.

Ranc0r: I started messing around in 3d probably in 98. I've been drawing since I was a kid.

Lifthz: The game is very fun. We actually got "Best Xbox Game" of E3 from GameSpot.

Here are some wireframes. The textures aren't the most recent in the images, but the geometry is still the same.

Here are a couple in game screen shots of the character:

05-25-2004, 09:16 PM
Great job:bounce:

05-25-2004, 10:24 PM
Gosh dangit!, people that could model well is one thing, but an awesome modeler and texturer, well, that just blows my mind!

Hey, one question:
Is it 7000 quads or triangles? Please tell me it's quads or I'm gonna shot myself right here.

Love it, man! It rocks!

05-25-2004, 10:29 PM
the_podman: Thanks! The model is 6772 tris, but please don't "shot" yourself. :)

05-25-2004, 10:59 PM
Hey, will do! But seeing that I already "shot" myself, I guess it's too late. lol

A quickie:
Did you use any other apps to texture other than photoshop?

Lots of people messing with Zbrush these days. Have you tried that one?

05-25-2004, 11:07 PM
Your comments made me realise this was only 7000 polygons. Amazing work!

05-26-2004, 01:03 AM
What time will the game be release ? It must be amazing !

05-26-2004, 01:52 AM
nice job!

05-26-2004, 03:07 AM
I really like the model. It is looking sw33t

05-26-2004, 03:43 AM
great job!

05-26-2004, 04:40 AM
Whoa! That's the coolest.

05-26-2004, 04:54 AM
Day 1 must be an awesome place to work - am I correct in understanding that you got to concept, model and texture the entire character? I was under the impression that none of the big dogs let you do that, that everything was chopped up into little pieces for the assembly line...then again, maybe not many people can handle it! Very cool opportunity, and really oustanding work!

05-26-2004, 05:34 AM
very impressive work .....

05-26-2004, 06:19 AM
Impressive work:buttrock:. Great details and render.

Seems pretty darn good to me. Its looks like armour but also seems to be 'cooling vest' too. Mind you, i havent play any mechwarrior games since mechwarrior 4. And i've not kept upto date with the universe. I'm assuming that pilots still wear cooling vests.

05-26-2004, 08:45 AM
amazing modeling and texturing skills!

05-26-2004, 10:21 AM
great work man

textures looks great

can i ask how long did it take to texture it and model (seperatly)

05-26-2004, 10:36 AM
For fear of souding like a 16yr old girl... he's GORGEOUS!

(oh dear!)

Great modelling, and the in-game model is very very impressive!

Good work!

05-26-2004, 01:15 PM
Did you go to any type of art school?
Ive been drawing since I was little too and I can only draw things from sight, not things I imagine in my mind.

This is awesome!

05-26-2004, 04:39 PM

Thanks again everybody!

Adam Atomic: Day 1 is an awesome place to work! I've been fortunate to be able to do both concepts and modeling. Whenever possible I like to be able to take a design from concept all the way through to finished model. I feel that I’m able to ensure the highest quality working that way.

Zeruel the 14th: Yeah, I was imagining that the vest and suit would have a cooling function.

LONEWOLF: Nice name. Nice work on your site. Those are probably the best CS weapons I've ever seen. I'd say the model took about a week, textures and tweaks another 2 weeks. It's kind of hard to judge because I was working on at least two other things while doing this model.

Ranc0r: I went to the University of Illinois and got a degree in Graphic Design. The curriculum focused on the fundamentals of design - which applies to any art field really. It's a good school. If anybody decides to go there say hi to my little sister Becca - she's starting there next year.

HOmz: Okay, here is Natalia's pilot uniform. Similar tech to the pilot's but not exactly the same.

ohh! Sprigenzi-sexy!

Much respect josh! very much in a state of AWESOME! I really like the sleekness of her suit with all the nicely subtle tech bits! Absolutely dig the vizor! would that be light projected holography or an ultra thin film? either or, looks damn hot! one thing I'm surprised not to see are assisted small weapons carried by her, or is her suit itself part armour and assault capable? Damn I'd love to work on a game like this! *gets all excited - but has to goes back to work* Totally love the worx dude! keep it up and look forward to seeing more!

p.s - I thought the twins sketches were sweet! esp love the girl twins uniform! very nice subtle skirt flare! dig it! diggin it all! :-)

05-27-2004, 10:21 PM
Come on the concept is nothing special at all, very similar to something I did not so long ago which I thought was pretty bland myself.
Yes yes how uncharitable I know blab blah...

Great execution though.

Really great work, I simply love it.

05-28-2004, 09:16 AM
At first I thought..... "meh... shaders are pretty simple and plastic looking" Then I realised it was in game art.... Its been a while since something has fooled me so well....

Damn fine job for just normal and specular passes. The brown fabric looks a little dull compared to the rest of the textures but otherwise fantastic work.

05-28-2004, 01:56 PM
Excellent work. perfect model.

06-03-2004, 11:07 PM

Sorry, My English is not perfect yet!...

Wonderful work .. i wish i get close to that quality in a couple of decades, .... or so:D
as u see ... i live in Egypt .. & we dont have such great art schools to give us such a degree in graphics !!!
wish to enter one soon ...:bounce:

Saturno21 : I've been using 3dsmax since I started in games. In school I used Maya. I liked them both about the same: Maya a bit more for animation, Max a bit more for modeling.

Honestly, I don't think it's the tool that makes the difference, it's the skills of the artist. Any of the major packages will get the job done these days, not any artist can use them to make something cool. I would say concentrate on the fundamentals of design, anatomy, painting, etc.

06-10-2004, 10:12 PM
Man's the second time i write here...your character has stack in my head...i find him awesome.. Right Click - save pic for study and get and ideas from it....:bounce:
