Here is another character from MechAssault2: Lone Wolf. This is the in-game cinematic model of the player character.

The color of the red areas of the suit and the glowing bits can be customized in multiplayer. These colors then carry over to any vehicle or mech you commandeer. Originally the player's name was going to go on the chest plate and the back plate as seen in the concept. This was deemed too much work for the benefit and was dropped.

The rendered image below was chosen to be included in the "Into the Pixel" Exhibition at E3 this year.

The model is around 7000 polys with 2 512s and a 128 with normal, spec and reflection maps. The readout on his visor animates.

I'll try to get some in game shots, a shot of his back and wires shortly [more like tomorrow].

this model i really really cool. great design, great texture, great hero pose. lots of personallity. love him. cool about the colors and glow can be changed in multiplayer. what is this mechassult 2? the new unreal tournament. post a link, I wanna know :bounce:

oh one thing i think is a little wierd. The belt that goes halfway around... looks abit funny to me... othervise I really like this dude... :thumbsup:

Sorry, I like + respect a lot of the 3D on this professional forum that makes the front page, but this one leaves me cold. I was even caught in the thought, "is his head too small?" and, "what would it be like getting caught in an elevator with this character?" Generic responses only.

Amazing job!
Althought he has a "heavy protection armor" he still has a fantastic flexibility feeling! I love it!

HOLY JEZUS, just beautifull, concept done in Photoshop and model in ? And I would love to see some unsmoothed and smoothed wires from that model pretty pretty please :D ? Great job , good luck on the rest of the prodcut, but itll be ok if it resembles this piece of magnificent work... :cry:

I saw the in-game trailer the other day and he does indeed look just as awesome in-game. :) Even better with the lighting. :)

I like the character and parts of him look really great, but I think the cloth part of his outfit looks too much like solid plastic and doesn't look like cloth.

Other than that looks fantastic.

It's funny to hear so many people talking about how 7000 polys isn't much. Coming from the PS2, 7000 polys with all the shaders the Xbox can do is like heaven.

Darknon: Here is the official site for MechAssault 2 - You should be able to find info about it very easily on the net. The most important thing to know about MA2 is that you should buy it. :)

McSpirit: Sorry but I don't think I should post the normal map. I don't want to help the competition too much. ;) I can say that for the most part the normal map was painted in grayscale and then converted to a normal map with a PS plugin.

sswift: Eye of Thundera give me sight! That logo on his chest is the logo for the Wolf Dragoons. I didn't come up with it.

baby: Yes there was some touch up to the E3 render. Mostly on the profile where you could see polys.

hertzchim: You can't please everybody. Guessing from your pic, sig and website we are just not into the same kind of art. Perhaps you would like it more if I worked in some melting genitals being eaten by bats. :P

Jamaludin: The concept was done mostly in Painter, but a bit was done in Photoshop. Modeling in Max. Textures in Photoshop.

Ranc0r: I started messing around in 3d probably in 98. I've been drawing since I was a kid.

Lifthz: The game is very fun. We actually got "Best Xbox Game" of E3 from GameSpot.

Here are some wireframes. The textures aren't the most recent in the images, but the geometry is still the same.

Gosh dangit!, people that could model well is one thing, but an awesome modeler and texturer, well, that just blows my mind!

Hey, one question:
Is it 7000 quads or triangles? Please tell me it's quads or I'm gonna shot myself right here.

Did you use any other apps to texture other than photoshop?

Lots of people messing with Zbrush these days. Have you tried that one?

Day 1 must be an awesome place to work - am I correct in understanding that you got to concept, model and texture the entire character? I was under the impression that none of the big dogs let you do that, that everything was chopped up into little pieces for the assembly line...then again, maybe not many people can handle it! Very cool opportunity, and really oustanding work!

Seems pretty darn good to me. Its looks like armour but also seems to be 'cooling vest' too. Mind you, i havent play any mechwarrior games since mechwarrior 4. And i've not kept upto date with the universe. I'm assuming that pilots still wear cooling vests.

Adam Atomic: Day 1 is an awesome place to work! I've been fortunate to be able to do both concepts and modeling. Whenever possible I like to be able to take a design from concept all the way through to finished model. I feel that I’m able to ensure the highest quality working that way.

LONEWOLF: Nice name. Nice work on your site. Those are probably the best CS weapons I've ever seen. I'd say the model took about a week, textures and tweaks another 2 weeks. It's kind of hard to judge because I was working on at least two other things while doing this model.

Ranc0r: I went to the University of Illinois and got a degree in Graphic Design. The curriculum focused on the fundamentals of design - which applies to any art field really. It's a good school. If anybody decides to go there say hi to my little sister Becca - she's starting there next year.

HOmz: Okay, here is Natalia's pilot uniform. Similar tech to the pilot's but not exactly the same.

Much respect josh! very much in a state of AWESOME! I really like the sleekness of her suit with all the nicely subtle tech bits! Absolutely dig the vizor! would that be light projected holography or an ultra thin film? either or, looks damn hot! one thing I'm surprised not to see are assisted small weapons carried by her, or is her suit itself part armour and assault capable? Damn I'd love to work on a game like this! *gets all excited - but has to goes back to work* Totally love the worx dude! keep it up and look forward to seeing more!

p.s - I thought the twins sketches were sweet! esp love the girl twins uniform! very nice subtle skirt flare! dig it! diggin it all! :-)

At first I thought..... "meh... shaders are pretty simple and plastic looking" Then I realised it was in game art.... Its been a while since something has fooled me so well....

Damn fine job for just normal and specular passes. The brown fabric looks a little dull compared to the rest of the textures but otherwise fantastic work.:thumbsup:

Saturno21 : I've been using 3dsmax since I started in games. In school I used Maya. I liked them both about the same: Maya a bit more for animation, Max a bit more for modeling.

Honestly, I don't think it's the tool that makes the difference, it's the skills of the artist. Any of the major packages will get the job done these days, not any artist can use them to make something cool. I would say concentrate on the fundamentals of design, anatomy, painting, etc.
