View Full Version : Machineflesh 2D Challenge Entry: Shaun E. Lupton

05 May 2004, 09:24 PM
Shaun E. Lupton has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.

05 May 2004, 11:56 PM
MachineFlesh Challenge 2d:

I will be entering the 2d and 3d challenge, thus I wanted to make 2 completely different images and scenerios, and still be able to follow the guidelines. My goal is to depict 2 scenes where my story is told through the picture itself. I will do my best to provide as much eyecandy and try to explain and show my progress throughout from concept to final. By the end of this challenge I hope I will succeed in finishing and creating masterpieces.

Story and Theme 2d:

The Theme for my 2d drawing will be The last War on earth, at least that is what I want to show. It will have total destruction of the earth. The war would be the last of the MachineFlesh creatures. A pure breed of humans unite to uphold a utopia like society by destroying anything or anyone that uses machines or genetically engineered body parts. These new leaders decided to create a new life, one like a communist regime that is war driven. Though because of the strict rules of the pure humans, they are subject to the basic necessities of life. And the idea of King to Peasant would be reborn.

I want to show the last remaining MachineFlesh creatures surrounded by an army of pure breed Nazi like humans. I want to show something different in this one. I don’t want it to be totally accurate as I will show the humans using primitive forms of weaponry and no body armor, whereas the machineflesh creatures will have all capabilities. I do want to show that the machines were a significant part of society, some more human then machine, some with families of their own. Others creations of war. I will show these human to be like mice on cheese, ready to attack. But, I will depict one of their leaders being held captive by the remaining machineflesh creatures. The Drawing, I will challenge myself. I will have a 3 part panel. Front panel will have the machines, and bother side panels will have the humans. The backdrop will be a giant matte painting holding everyone together in the end. I will post my completed drawings as they come along.

Check back often for updates!

06 June 2004, 06:10 PM
I love your characters and your drawing style is really unique. I think this will be a really cool piece and can't wait to see it finished. I also want to point something out:

Don't take this the wrong way....I'm not trying to acuse you of stealing elements from other artwork.
I was just wondering if you've seen this piece by Jon Foster that has a similar feel to your angry mob. I hate it when people look at my art and say that looks like so&so's style, or like this piece, or this movie....which I've often never seen. So I appologize. Just want you to be aware that this piece exists.

06 June 2004, 09:53 PM (

Sorry for lack of updates as ive been busy, but I managed to finish the third installment which is the right side of the picture. I will give a full composite of the three drawings next, and then off to the coloring boards! Hope you like..

06 June 2004, 10:18 PM
Virtuoso - Hey thanks for the encouragement, sorry for such a timelly update, I had to put my priorities straight before I get back into this challenge. Im squared away as of today. SO much much more updates coming!!!

illustr8r - Thanks for your comments and im glad you like the style. I am familiar with Jon Fosters work, and have to say there are no simalarities, except that I have skinhead type guys attacking. I guess that might be enough for some people though, but I cant please everyone as a piece of art corolates to something similar, always. I always see the final piece in my mind before I draw and create a story from there. I drew based on what my mind saw. I suppose if I gave my guys all afros there would be a distinct difference, and you wouldnt have commented with Jon's great work. All I can do is keep moving on towards finishing the piece, and hopefully by the end, you will see that the piece will stand on its own great merit, and others will take influence from it, that is my goal atleast. So thanks for you keen observation, and hopefully you will enjoy the final.

more updates coming!!

06 June 2004, 10:32 PM (

Here is the giant composite of the three. I will begin on coloring, I most likelly will do the background before the characters, more to come!!
I added a link to the gallery so you can see the bigger image of the piece, hopefully the link works! SEL

I really think that your work is very interesting. It's original, personnal and well done.
I wait for the next update.
I wish you the best.

06 June 2004, 01:49 AM
Woooh...! Lot of work in perspective! I admire your courage! :) Like others have said, I think your characters at the center rock!!!

Keep on the good job!

06 June 2004, 12:27 AM
If your coloring is a good as your line art...this piece is going to be sweet.
Lol....I don't think that you need to give your characters fros. I don't think you need to change it at all. I just wanted you to know that piece is out there and slighlty similar. Now that you've seen it I removed the link.

06 June 2004, 12:42 AM
I really like what youve done so far bud, i llok forward to more updates. The Whole composition reminds me of some big battle scene painted in the renaissance, even sort of a last supper type of thing except your should be "the last stand" . I think its probably just the length of the composition. Looking forward to seeing more.
:bounce:    :D

06 June 2004, 08:25 AM
Hey all thanks for the kind words and encouragement!! for all!

goli - Thanks again, as it seems I put a lot of work on my shoulders with having so many damn characters. Hopefully the final product will do it justice. for you!

Kraull - thanks, the characters in the center so far have been pretty fun to color, glad you like the piece. I have a ton more ideas with this thing, like a space craft and an army of thousands in the background, we'll see if I have time! for you!!!

illustr8r - Thanks for the support, though white guys with afros would be an interesting and humorous twist :P . I hope to do my line art justice with my coloring, crossing fingers! and a  for you too!

sketchfiend - Hey there! I like the idea for the title : "The Last Stand" , I think Ill use it! Thanks for the feedback and kind words! 2  for you!

Enjoy tonights update!!

06 June 2004, 08:25 AM (

Hi guys and gals,
this is the start of my coloring, I cropped the piece that I worked on as im finding out, this is going to be a huge piece, I had to minimize it a little as my computer could'nt handle the resolution. I decided to do both background and characters the same time as doing just background or just characters got boring after awhile. I hope you like!

06 June 2004, 09:39 AM
Very ambitious amount of work to do.....respect, you must be very fast. I'm always put off doing so much, with so little time. I wish you all the luck with this piece.

Good start

06 June 2004, 04:34 AM
hahahaah I liked this update a lot!!

06 June 2004, 10:37 AM
Well my plan is to do one update a night until the end of the challenge. That is the only way im going to finish this thing as im starting to feel the pressures of finishing such a huge piece. I wanted to challenge myself though, so its my own fault if it doesnt get done. Its 3AM and im beat so off to bed.

Paul Davidson - Thanks for the encouragement as time seems to be running out. A beautiful piece you have as well, ill comment on your beautiful work of art in the morning as im ready to pass out.

Russo - Hey thanks man, glad you like the update, hopefully you like the latest one as well. I need to comment on your thread as well as your coloring work is amazing..

06 June 2004, 10:41 AM (

In this update Ive added more to the background, mountains, stone pillars, etc. Im going to fill the left side with a moiuntainis terrain hopefully covering the big planet. right side will have a trail come from the bottom up. As you can see more colors, though a thin pic as the bottom is basically green and will be worked on tommarrow. chao for now!!

06 June 2004, 01:20 PM
This is huge man! Incredibile!
I hope you can finish on time. You must!!!

06 June 2004, 08:36 AM
Hi all, ive been busy the last couple days, but I made it a mission to work on it, so the last couple late nights have went into the latest update.

EmpY - Sorry for such a late reply, Yeah this is big, and heavy. im actually starting to get sick of drawing dirt and rocks with there being so much landscape, I hope you enjoy the latest.

06 June 2004, 08:42 AM (

This is the latest update. I would show more, but the rest of the scene is not nearly complete enough to show. I decided to change my color scheme and story to where the robots are now assassins capturing the humanoid leader. Revions to the story will be on the first post. Anyhow Hope you like the new color scheme, and I hope its up to par with what your imagining, take care ..

06 June 2004, 09:05 AM
Damnation, I can see whole movie in this...what a wild bunch of personalities:surprised.
Colors are great! I would desaturate in the end but that's just me.

So what if you are a bit sick of painting the rocks, I can not
even look at my pic anymore - so get it done, it's freaking awesome!!!:buttrock: :surprised

06 June 2004, 09:14 AM
fpr spme reason your choice of colours (and even style of painting) reminds me of the monty python animations.

06 June 2004, 11:35 PM
EmpY - thanks there Empy, your right about the desaturation, though im working from my labtop, since my computer is broken and the LCD monitor makes things really dark and harder to see true color, so I may have to transfer to another compter and do the final colorize there. Thanks for the encouragement, Ill do my best to finish in time.

eupee - I hope thats a good thing! :hmm:

Anyhow, Ill hope to post the latest updates by tonight or tommarrow and final a day early..

06 June 2004, 12:16 AM
It's a great great personnal and original..(did i already said that...?:D )
' hope u have time to stress....argh...

Btw i'm agree with Empy about desaturation...and maybe it could give you more time...:)

I wish you the best with your computers..

Have a good painting !

06 June 2004, 10:23 AM
goli - thanks for the support, I think ive gotten to a point where I think Ill finish, I have some highlights and extra effects that I need to finish, but other then that, im tired and need to move on to something new, so my final will be up tomarrow mid day, for me that is. CA time. Anyhow, there are so many great contestents in this challenge that the judgeing is gonna be exciting. I need to write people back who have supported me throughout this challenge and your one of them. Thanks again.

I will be showing an update below..

06 June 2004, 10:29 AM (

This is only a glimpse everyone. As the file is huge, I will be posting the final full res tommarrow sometime. Sorry for such a small image, but I dont want to give away all my details until they are done, so I leave you with a mini picture.. :P MUUHAHAHA! Im tired 3AM need some sleep, be back tommarrow..

06 June 2004, 06:50 AM (

Hi all, this is the final coloring of the image. Heres a closeup of the gang!

06 June 2004, 06:57 AM (

Hi all this, is the final image of my works in the mahcineflesh challenge, had to lower the quality and image size to keep it under 150kb. Now im trying to figure out how the ftp upload works! chao!

06 June 2004, 07:24 AM

I think everything is complete now, for some reason the FTP thing isnt working so Ill try again tommarrow. This challenge has been fun, inspiring, creative, and a great way to test your own abilities by challenging yourself. I have to say that I am satisfied at where im at, I could spend another month on this thing to really blend and smooth out the overal piece, but that would be just crazy as Ive really put a ton of time on it here the last week or so. WIth that said, my challenge is over as of today! :applause: . Im glad to have been a part of another one of these great cgtalk/cgnetworks online challenges. You really get to meet alot of interesting and creative people who look at art as something of substance rather then a waste of time. Its great a community has come together to unite the world of artists, in one place where our own abilites are honored and sometimes humbled by our piers. With only the future to look forward to now, its been a pleasure drawing with all of you. Until the next big event! chao!

06 June 2004, 08:12 PM
Natethor - Hey thanks, glad you like, hope everyone gets around to finishing, last day!

EmpY - THanks alot, your 3d piece came out great too!

Goodluck with everyone still trying to finish, deadline coming quick!

06 June 2004, 05:49 AM
 This was always going to be good...and the end result is certainly that...or should I say better....

Love the detail and scale of the that needs to be seen at high res to just appreciate the amount of work put in and all those extra details that you can only guess at when viewing through here.

Congatulations and good luck... :applause: :applause:

06 June 2004, 11:16 AM
Hey thanks MrFreeman,

This is probably the biggest piece ive ever done considering how many characters were in it and background. Though it was a fun experience, and
I learned a lot in my own craft by doing such a big piece. Thanks again for the kind words!

08 August 2004, 09:53 PM
Well guys and gals,

Im glad to finally know the voting was complete and there were a lot of great winners. I just wished I knew where my entry went wrong? Didnt even make an honorable mention. Did it not get through the first round, did I not follow some directions. I guess the idea MORE is better may have back fired on my overal piece. So with that said in the humblest of forms, ill be back next challenge and great job to all that entered as it was truelly fun watching everyones work come together. Thats why I love these things, and the competitive nature :P Until then.
