Hallo everyone :)

I've finally had some time to work a bit further on my elven girl . . I'll probably make her human . . she is going to have a small role in a movie :)

anyway . . I really want to make the dress velvet. The Warcraft3 movies have some extremely nice velvet but I don't know what shader they used. Can anyone help out with some tricks or knowledge of shaders (for max) ? I've been experimenting with some falloff textures but this is the best I can come up with . . it doesn't look quite soft enough I think.

Well, the falloff is working so far, but the reason it isn't working properly yet is because it is missing that micro bump that velvet has :)
I'm not sure how you will get the perfect bump without using a shader - because the bump would have to be soooooo tiny to work...
However, not being a max user myself, unfortunately I am not aware of what velvet shaders are available for max....
Perhaps a max user can help you help here??

I guess you could maybe try making a noise map - like in Photoshop, make a square grey image and use the noise filter to get an image that looks like static. Then try using that as a bump map, but tile it really really small (I generally HATE tiled textures, but this might work a bit)... Alternatively, if Max has a procedural that looks like static, you could try using that :shrug:

I think it works pretty well . . but you really have to see it move :)

What did u use for the cloth simulation?

I used simcloth for the dress. It's the same plugin as in the silk-tutorial. I think there is a link for it in there . . it's freeware.

Hmm.... now that I look at it closely, I think the head may indeed be a little too big. Just a little bit :)

I've been thinking about trying to create a velvet look and when I saw this post I figured I'd have a go at it.

Here's what I came up with, it's more of a crushed velvet look...

It was done in Max using the default procedurals.

I did a smooth version too, but it doesn't look as realistic. In real life things are rarely perfectly smooth.

I whipped out my handy dany teapot and slapped it on.


Quite simple really, most of the work is done in the bump which interacts with the self Illumination. Only one prob...Have you tried rendering it in a dark room.?

With the self illumination it will glow in those areas [I](As self Illumination would suggest). I forget now, but I think if you were to use that same map in the "Etra Lighting" (Or soewhere in those extended raytrace prametres you can get a similar effect.

Just a thought.

You've got a point. I didn't think about low light situations. And you're also right about using the Extra Light slot. I didn't even know about that one, but I did a test and it does have the same effect as using Luminosity, but also the same drawback in that it stays bright even when I turn the lights down. I also experimented with using different settings in the Reflection slots (Reflect and Environment), but never got something I was really happy with. Oh well, I guess if I was really going to us this in a scene I would just change the luminosity parameters to match the lighting.
