First of all, it's not 2.5 but 3.0 that will be released.
Second, it is not released yet so you can only rely on gossip for the features. It will be release at Siggraph. In the meantime, you can read about those gossip here:

No problem!
Someone from Softimage publicly confirmed in the last few days that it will be version 3, so no one (expect beta-testers) knew for sure before that!

I wonder how worthwhile or current this book would be if XSI 3 is on the horizon? I wonder if there will be any major changes in the animation system that might render it redundant.

Although it's written for v.1, it's still great resource for character animation/design. The book is not from those step-by-step guides so it's very easy to follow even in other packages than XSI.
