Ingo Mesche has entered the Machineflesh 3D Challenge.

Hi there ....

now it`s done ... I convinced myself to attend for the
first time in a challenge :) . I hope that I manage to stay
until the end cause I do this here now between some

I liked the idea "mashineflesh" so much that had to do
something ... so ... I searched all my skinny puppy / fla
CD`s together to come into the right mood for this.

I am not 100% sure about the idea yet ...
I will post some scribbles asap ... I tend to do something Scifi.
Big Mashine / with fat grown "human/s" attached.

as soon as I find time I start to model..
The core of the "FLEISCHMASCHINE".
Protected and maintained by the Flesh-guards.
again this is just a rough Idea scribble ... the final will have more detail ( I hope ;) )

here we go ... a fat human ....
first I start in Maya .. beginning from half a Geosphere I start tweaking and adding polygons until I get something like this. I don`t put too much effort into polygon allignment as it will be subdivided and reduced and smoothed and and ... the end result is important just ... going to mirror the half now and bring it into the "swiss army knife for moddeling" into ZBrush ... there I am going to subdivide and tweak him to a real fat human ...

phew .... it was though work ..
I had too many polygons and I had to reduce it a lot ..but anyway its ok its no realtime game I have to do :)
I made him from both sides ...eventhough I dont know if I am going to show him from the rear so much, but I can use this model later on for something else so I finished him from both sides .. next step will be to bring him a bit more into a "hanging" position and to cut all the nasty holes into him to fix the mashinery. I am going to make him look really "crushed" by the mashine .. he will have all kind of tumors and dents and cracks here and there in his skin as a reaction to the "foreign" materials.He will be more grown into the mashine later ...
now after working on this without stopping I need to go on with something else ... so the next steps will take a while.. there is still a lot to model.
It makes fun ...but I think I do this here just for myself :) noone responds .. :)
Anyway I hope you like it ..

Are you going to make him look like he's been trough mincing machine? Okay just kidding. Don't know (I'm not anatomy expert, just caught my eye) if his tommy needs to come out bit more? More volume there? Don't know really about that... But I like it this far!

yes .. his tummy ... hmmm its not the final exact pose ...
I will hang them under kinda machine "arms" ... so his tummy will
move a bit down because of the weight .... but as a standing
pose how it is I think it looks ok like this ... the weight of the fat directs the tummy down ... when there is less fat a tummy tends to come out more .... anyway .. he will be filled with machinery .. his skin will be stretched at the back into the "machine" so the tension might brings it more up again too ...
I try to make it look better or right at the end when he is hanging.

but at the end ...with his big hole in the back and all the attachments... he will be happy with his tummy still there :)
I am going to cut his head halfway through away and place his brain outside into kinda sphere or so ...

started to model the interior ...

I am going to add much more machinery/organic stuff, muscles and veins combined with machine parts.

phew, I reach the limits of my computer ... :( I didn´`t know that mentalRay gives up with more then 3.5 mill. polys :) at least here ... ) but the background is now almost ready modeled. now "just" the robot arm and the attachments to the human.
Might I have to add them together with the background in the post prod.
but before comes the texturing & lighting ...

hope you like it ... my computer doesnt :)


Edit: I found out that I had several copies of some objects in the exact same place and that was the reason why I had so many polygons and problems ... everything is fixed again... :)

All pictures are restored which have been lost due the CG Talk Server crash ...

So ... I really hardly work at the limits of what my computer can process ...
I optimize my scene further but I already deleted everything which is not visible in this camera angle. I still try to go further down with the polygon count. I think I will not get the desired resolution of <3000 pixel ..
we see ...
modeling is finished for now I send the human which will float or hang in the machinery right after this picture.

Here is the floating or hanging human ..
first I thought they will be the guardians of the machine ...but as you can see they are the BRAIN of the machine now :)...

I go to the next milestones now ... texturing and lightning ... ( but first I have my internal milestone of optimizing scene size :))

Thanks again for all the nice comments you gave ... they are all gone now cause of the server crash :(

Very surreal and original work. Certainly looks "fleshy" and machinelike to me. I like it =)

I hope you can spend a lot of time on the textures for the environment, it is looking very nice indeed. Its a good camera angle on it too.

I try to take all the time I have for the rest of the work .. .but
eventough my computer is quite strong I reached it`s limits.. :(
mental ray doesnt want to render my scene completly and I think
I must go on with maya`s native renderer ... there I can render
the scene quite good. I must find a way to get a nice render later ..
First I am doing the textures now ... but I am going to do most
of the texturing as post I think ... its just a picture, no anim ...

I am a quite admirer of your work .... :beer: your bike design is
really very nice ... I like the curvature of the parts a lot... the
overall modeling is really impressive ... keep that clean render
ing... it fits perfect to the style of the bike.

PS: I prefer the yellow color of the suit you had before.

Hi Snarl,

cool and "heavy" ;) concept. I love your char in his first step - the "bumps" are too deep for my taste, maybe it's the black in the bumps...(?)maybe could be the lighting rig...

glad that you like it ... :)

regarding the "bumps" there is no bumpmap yet ... its all
geometry and thats why it looks still a bit strange "deep" ...
I made no good lights yet .... and the shadow falls too dark ...

but could be that I exagerated the distortions a bit too much...
maybe I go later a bit back to the not so harmed version.

das Gesicht könnte etwas lebendiger wirken aber das kommt dann ja evtl. mit der Textur :)

You are doing an extraordinary job here. Congratulations. I have two questions though... What software r u using for modelling and what tecnique (nurbs, subdivision, etc)

Having a deeper look at your pictures made me realise one thing, I think... your fat dudes are not pending down as they should... Perhaps if you give them some sort of still movement in which you can see their weight... can you see? One thing you could do is bend their knees forward a bit, and their arms back... dunno... What do you reckon?

AsKham > Thanks to you too I am happy that you all like it ... I work with Maya ... some of the organic stuff is "finished" in ZBrush ... Its mixed .... some objects are polys / smoothed and some nurbs ... ( for example the pipes are extruded nurbs objects allong curves ... ) at the end I convert them to polygons to have a bit more control over the final tesselation. I ran into some restrictions of my system ( mem ) and I had to reduce geomertry as much as I can ... hey a new nice computer wouldnt be bad :)
Regarding the hanging postion ..... I am not sure yet where and how to place them ... maybe I go even a step back and I take the not so "harmed" humans .. I keep their postion for now and later when there is still time I try to enhance as much as I can ...
for now I start to texture ....

here is the beginning of the texturing .. correct lightning comes later ... busy with other things thats why I can`t come up with more frequent updates.
still a lot to texture with the machine/hall part in the background.

another texture step ... a lot of the objects are hidden to speed up texture test rendering ... all what is "plastic greyish" is not textured yet .. and some other parts too ... still 28days to go :)

Thanks for your kind words about my bike. Glad you like it =) I have to say though, that your entry is far and away much more in theme with machine flesh. Its such a literal interpretation, I love it!! Giant machines pumping out stringy sausages of flesh... who would have thought it would work so well.

Somantics aside, great job on the texturing mate! That floating brain guy is sensational. I really like the rotting flesh and cracks you have around the implants going into his leg. The design of them reminds me a lot fo Doom3 also,and that ain't bad.

Looking forward to seeing it all come together in the end.:thumbsup:

Hy Guys ....

I am a bit in worry that I will not be able to finish my entry ...
Work is keeping me busy and I don`t have time at all for
fun stuff ..... I won`t give up yet as there are still some days
left but anyway I wish to everyone good luck already :) It is
and was fun and if there will be another challenge I try my
best to participate ...... btw... I never had an eye on the boxx
computer :) I thought the wacom tablet is the first price and this
got me into the challenge ... when I noticed its the first price for
the 2d section it was too late :) hehe .... stupid...

thanks to everyone who wrote here and to all those which wrote "offline" to me ... we stay in contact ...

and I am impressed how many really good entries there are ...


but I still hope to find some time to finish the pic ........:beer:

I finished all I had to do and I can go on with the contest ....
here is a "rendering" milestone ....
I don`t know what is meant with the rendering milestone so I just send a render diagnostics pic :) so you can see its rendered :) Lighting milestome follows at once ....

so here is the lighting milestone ...

now in the composition I do color corrections and I combine the character with the background ... furthermore I add more drawn details and maybe I add
some rendered details too ...

nice texturing!
I just love the way the wires plug into the character's bruised flesh.

the only think I would consider changing is
making less obvious the uniform noise on the tumor on the character's back.
or adding some sort of thick dirty translucent layer on top of it.

Yes yes ... I finish it .....

I am almost ready .... I might send the final milestone today .... I think the final version is a big step ahead but you must judge :) I really like to do the final composing and I think I got the right mood I planned to get from the beginning but it never showed until now ... I am still thinking if I should add some atmospheric fx .... like smoke or dust ... even a cheeze lensflare came into my mind :) hehe ....

we see .... I am happy with how it came out now .... I hope you are too ... I send it asap ...

So .... I transfered now the final tiff ( which is 3200x2400 pixel )

does anyone know if there is some kind of verification system to see that the picture really arrived ?

after my upload I couldn`t see the zip on their server ....

Glad that you like it :) ....

I didn`t make the fat man bigger because he is a part
of the machine like all the other parts in the pic ... the
whole thing is one .. he and the other one which is further
away are the brains of the machine ... I tired to stay close
to the "machine flesh" idea ... 50% machine 50% flesh :)

anyway ... the final I`ve send is big enough to show all
the details which I added into the guys ...

again ... I am happy to hear that you like it :)

Yeah I really liked it , but I think the way it is some great details are lost and I think The fat freak wouldnt destroy ur idea if he gets closer to the camera .

I wish I could show a higher resolution here but I can`t get the
image under 150KB in a higher resolution there are "too many" details :) ... as soon as I go a bit higher with the compression it looks destroyed ....
the uploaded final is 3200x2400 .... there you can see a lot more
details then in the 800x600 version which I have here ... I hope
that they show a bigger version later for judging ....

Yes my avatar is also a pic about one of my clay works. I've made portraits over one hundred...and some full figures also.

This masterpiece take a very fantastic artistic way...

It's not so easy to read the image (certainly due to the small sizy of the picture)... but it was so attractive... I think eyes can be prisoneers of your picture...

I hope to see soon the big final picture to study all the details of the scene... good work man :D

So this is now the final final ...
I had the whole time a bad feeling
because there was a mistake in my
picture and I`ve uploaded already my
zip. Now I took the risk to overwrite
my upload with a new version and it
good luck worked.
Might noone would have ever noticed
the mistake I had in my picture but
I would`nt have been able to live with
it :)
while I removed the mistake I added some
small fx which I thought were missing too.

So ... this is now the final final and
I can relax again that that stupid error
in my picture is gone....

Oh, very cool! Have to admit that this is (yet another) thread I've overlooked until now.... there's so darn many of them..... anyway, it's a great concept, and the final image is certainly an impressive work - there's so much in it, I can look at it for a long time and find interesting details everywhere! And fleshy gore always makes me happy!

Good to see your entry finally come together. It looks sensational if a little on the bloody side =) The texturing and lighting are superb, I like it very much. The whole image has a certain game like style to it... I'm thinking doom3 for some reason...

that if there is a next time, that I am able to start a bit earlier to go through all this together with your sugesstions and tips ..

I don`t know how all the voting works and if they show bigger
versions of the picture through the voting ... I really hope so
because as you already noticed there is really a lot of detail
in the pic which is not shown because of the low resolution.

As far as I know, there are three round of voting.

1st is public where half of them are taken to the second round

2nd is internal where the cgtalk mods and/or a select panel of judges decide on their top 50 (I might be wrong, but I think it's 50)

3rd is also internal where the sponsors (discreet, boxx, nvidia) cast their votes for the final places

I think this is right, but don't quote me. So basically, its anyone's game. Seeing as their are so many good entries, I think it will come down to personal preference. Although I'm sure they have a 'offical' scorecard or something...
