View Full Version : Game Art Comp 7: Dogtanian - Dogtanian and the 3 muskethounds

An old fave of mine
I was torn between Ulysses 31, Dogtanian and Dexter's Lab, but Dogtanian has the most intresting design. Also - Dexter is drawn in such a way that it would be extremely difficult in 3d. The hair for instance. Bah! I cant believe im passing the chance to make Ulysses' mighty beard in 3D!

Was tough to decide, but I think ive made the right choice.

One for all and all for one!

Some ref pics incase you dont know who he is - I need to get me the DVD and take some proper screencaps.

Wow, blast from the past. Nice choice. Good luck!

btw, I like the choice for the challenge.

OK. Heres my nights work. It equates to about 3 - 4 hours.
Its 1336 triangles at its present stage and ive yet to make his belt, sword and hat feathers! :surprised

Needs a lot of tweaking.

OMG, that show used to play sundays when I was a kid, but it was translated to afrikaans. His name was Brakenjan, memories. It was either that, Heidi, Pinnochio and this other show about a kid wanting to be a painter and lives with his grandfather.

Great, no I can't get Dogtanian's theme song out of my head.

Ok. Another update. 1405 polys now, and all the essential bits are there. Just refining and adding polys.

Dang doing good already, again :(

I remember this char somewhat, but not really sure lol.

which side is the belt supposed to be on? it's different in one of the pictures. looks a lot like him so far.

05-02-2004, 06:10 PM
Hmm yeah he looks right handed in most pics, although a few have it swapped.

Modeling is done now. All thats left is to texture it, which will just be his eyes and eyebrows, and rig it. I may experiment with cel shading, but the cartoon has no light based shading - just solid colour, so I dont think it would fit.
I brought the DVD the other day, and its aged quite badly, but its still watchable!
Does anyone know where it originated from?? I used to think it was Spanish, but the box says produced by BRB internacional, S.A. Which im assuming is south Africa... Maybe Steyn was right!

He's 1469 polys by the way.

you should probably flip him around. the belt is on the other side in all of your refs except 1.

After watching the DVD, i guess Dogtanian is a left handed dawg. Ill change it soon. Thanks for pointing it out.
Im not that pleased with it at the moment - It looks pretty basic until I can figure out cel shading in maya. Can anyone here help? These pics were done using the old "duplicate, scale and invert normals trick". Its good for these stills, but impractical for animation and rigging. I need an automated or shader based approach.
Hopefully some nice poses will make it look better too.

05-05-2004, 09:48 PM
Done some poses - Theyre still up for improvement, but thats about it. I just need to tweak the textures and fix his eyes - he looks retarded and / or dead!
The ink outlines are a bit rough too.

Gimme some comments! Does it look like the fella??

Its not my best work ever, but I wasnt expecting it to be great, considering how basic it is.

Maybe not, i dunno haven't seen your work before, but this model is very solid and very well done. The poses are very nice as well, nice and solid :).

I've never seen this character, but you did a great job with it. I think you hurt your chances in the contest by voting & competing, since you didn't want to vote for your own, but I guess you don't mind. Still, great contest theme, and great submission - congrats on both.

as i said in my voting, i like this a lot. Just consider those sword fixes :)
