View Full Version : Speed modeling session : theme : skeletton

04 April 2004, 11:27 AM
This session runs until monday 3 May. You have to model a skeletton (entire if you can) , or just skull, of any animal (including human), fantasy or real, in any style.
You have 4 hours to work on it. Post a WIP image after 2 hours, and a final image after up to 4 hours, consisting of at least 2 different angle renders of your model, and level 0 wires.
Please read the speed modeling forum rules ( before posting.

Have fun!

:-D haha, that's so cool, I really want to try this one, a fictional skeleton.

04 April 2004, 03:37 AM
I was going to say: no posts? then I realized that it was posted today. I'll do my best, but it'll be a first attempt, so I dont expect to get any more than the skull done.

04 April 2004, 06:03 PM
great theme, very educational!

here's my contribution, I concentrated on the skull.
3h 30min

here's the 2h milestone:
2h milestone (

and here's a mini timelapse:
mini timelapse (0.5mb) (
didn't take "10min timestamps" in the end, so a little messy there..

Fellah never ceases to amaze me. Everything you do looks so polished and professional. Great job.

04 April 2004, 11:54 PM
Nice model fellah did you use a picture in the background? If you did do you know where is a good place to get some reference pics at?

04 April 2004, 12:06 AM
Looks amazing compared to anything i do so i feel i have to ask some questions =)
What kind of method did you use when modelling that skull?
How did you start? Did you use alot of referencepictures?
cant wait to see some more stuff! =)

04 April 2004, 12:28 AM
when i tried to search for skull refrences on the internet I didn't find very much. I think you can find much better ones in books. great job fellah!

04 April 2004, 12:45 AM
you can find a mini timelapse on my site. I used the same technique for this skull as I did in that tut. I will try do do a mini timelapse like that one, but with this skull.. will try do it tomorrow afternoon though. I'll post the link in this thread when it's done.
yea I had alot of reference, not enough though.. I found a few good links after I had posted. I will go back and fix a few things later..

yea I did use backdrop in the front.

here are a few links with reference,

thank you all, really looking forward to see what the rest of you will come up with for this session.

04 April 2004, 01:29 AM
I take more time doing the body more then the skull.. so anyways..

Remmeber its an asian skull.

04 April 2004, 01:38 AM
Very good, Ilike the model thanks for the intherview!

04 April 2004, 02:41 AM
"fantasy or real, in any style"

Well, this is almost off-topic, but he is a skeleton and not a zombie IMHO, so...

Here's the ghost pirate LeChuck (Monkey Island villian) after 1 hour of modelling and 20 minutes of mucking around with Maya's vector renderer and some basic shaders.

Still missing his beard.

04 April 2004, 03:10 AM
Started these bones as anatomy studies a while back...
took about 5+ hrs total for all three. Goal was to create a complete skeleton and muscle rig but i got sidetracked (its about time to revive this old project)
Will continue with a pelvis and femur for this session later tomorrow

soft: XSI 3.5

04 April 2004, 05:34 AM
Total time 1:35

I ran out of steam at 12:30 am :)

04 April 2004, 12:27 PM
3 hours using maya.hehe i am abit slow and i feel like its my start.Anyways I will finish it up.

04 April 2004, 07:49 PM
here's a skull i made for a project recently. use internet explorer with anark player. check out her teeth by clicking the jaw

04 April 2004, 09:26 PM
after 2 hours, gotta take a long break now or I will faint

wireframe (

It's a monkey btw "Pygmy Marmoset", check here

Lots of nice other skulls are on this site btw.

04 April 2004, 11:34 PM
Only an hour, because I don't have enough time in my day. Thus the crapiness! This is my interpretation of what a spider would look like if it were a mammal. I'll try and do more before monday.

04 April 2004, 12:10 AM
nice job everyone

Pretty good interpretation! Extra credit for doing such a great character!:D

ok not completely finished, still some teeth missing, and stuff inside the skull, but 3.5 hrs are over (with break :-)

wireframe final (

I's been good fun indeed. Thanks for all those speed sessions, m@!

04 April 2004, 01:09 AM
skills. good stuff

04 April 2004, 02:15 AM
These skulls and bones are looking good, especially for the time put into them.
I found a good site ref for a gorilla skull ( if anyone's interested. I may do it myself if I get time since I've already done a human skull before (spent more than 4 hrs on it though).

04 April 2004, 02:24 AM
hey, jet jaguar, how did you do that? like the anark player thing? that is awesome... if i could show people my models like that, that would be great...

04 April 2004, 05:10 AM
thanx, you make some nice characters too
Anark is a online 3d program that works well with max, maya and cinema4d. check out the full working demo. you can make alot in 15 days

04 April 2004, 07:17 AM
maya only no Z-Brush :wip:

erilaz actually did something pretty similar to my idea.. do great minds really think alike? I guess it depends on both of our egos.. :)

This is a mosquito skeleton.. Its a little know fact that, by nature, they have a fully functioning skeletal system.. Its just that, most are rather protective of their bones and prefer to leave them locked up safley at home. Only when they fully trust somebody, will they ever show their skeletal systems..
Why should you believe me? Cause I''m a genious!! I think thats rather obvious.. sheesh

Heres a quick sketch.. took about 10 min

and heres what I got so far after pretty much exactly 2 hours... roughed out the general body shape, legs are finished.. spine sections still need some work.. Hope to have the rest of the body roughed out after hour 3 so the last hour can be spent on fine tuning and touch ups..

It was only after I got here that I read that rule for the level 0 wire frame.. I'll make sure to nab one for the final post .. also just noticed how much bigger my pictures are than everybody elses.. sorry.. I'll keep em smaller in the future.. The designs a bit wonky.. but source material is rather.. limiting and Im tired.. so :P

05 May 2004, 11:21 AM
Ok.. after 3 hours and about 59 minutes (plus two 5 minute smoke breaks  ) .. I didnt quite get it done.. never got to touch up the spine.. inside of the head wasnt quite finished.. and I missed the wing bone! Which was like.. the major defining bit seperating the mosquito from like.. every other six legged creature in the world.. but meh.. I learned a ton.. I have never really tried modeling with speed, and it was a good learning experience.. I had also never actually tried box modeling before (I usually do the Joan of Arc method crossed with my own weird hybrid).. so I tried creating the skull that way and I learned alot from that..

I find it totally bizzare how, as humans, we all have a tendancy to anthropomorphize things. It can be hard to bring your creative mind to a level where your compleatly disociated with your instinct and can begin to think in a compleatly alien form. I had one rough design for this totally wonky skeletal system.. but it was way to abstract for a skeleton quick model :P I also find that the rather.. human form to alot of the bones, give the character a really goofy sorta look, which is cool ^_^

Its weird.. I have been spending all the past year work only on my demo reel plus one or two other projects.. Its been years and years since I modeled something "just for fun" .. I had almost compleatly forgotten how much I love modelling :P
anyway.. here we go ^_^

Its got no brain!!! O_o

*edit* Arg!! I just realised that I didnt get its kneecaps done eather! Damn.. that was like.. the pinnacle of the design! The mosquito with kneecaps.. <sigh> : \

05 May 2004, 11:40 AM
First of all Great theme .. im surprised there hasnt been too much response to this one which dissapoints me a little.. well heres my contribution.. final image lit and rendered took 3 hours 58 mins.. i have to admit this design has been kicking around my room for some time for a project im working on in my spare time so this was a great excuse to get it done.. let me know what you all think .. i havent botherd to post any wip atm .. if you want to see some of my before shots let me know ill put them up .. Here's my skull head. It took me 4h of hard midnight work. And due to a hard PC crash, I've lost my zbrush file
So I won't continue with the lower jow...

05 May 2004, 10:21 AM
Okay, first post.
hmm.. it took me 2 hours so far to model that using lightwave.
most of my time was spent on trying to figure out what is it that i'm modeling here... :hmm:
think it came out... stange :) hope ya'll like it!
i think i'll finish my 4 hours later on today.

(yeah, it's got 4 eyes)

05 May 2004, 10:23 AM
sebcesoir - Very cool work! I love it :applause:
I really have to try that ZBrush ASAP!

erilaz - Thanks... Not my finest work, but for an hour of modelling, to have a character that people recognize instantly, that's not too bad.

05 May 2004, 05:00 PM
Well, it's been about 3.5 hours or so.
and I didn't finish it.
The original idea was to create a weird alien pet skeleton with 4 eyes, small body, and wings.
please don't ask me where i got that idea, cause even i don't know! :)
don't think i'll keep workin' on that.

05 May 2004, 07:37 PM
Here is my contribution,
A skull !... made in a little over an hour.Made with no anatomical references as you can see.

Incredible work, fast and accurate sebcesoir , ray , and fellah !

05 May 2004, 02:47 AM
Hi this is my first speedmodelling session. Done in Maya4.5.
I wasnt quite sure how it was going to turn out at the start because i never really felt Maya to be that great of a modeller's tool. But with some good refs, it wasnt all that bad. I also had about 3 crashes while doing this. thats insane since its not even high poly.
Here is the 2hour milestone
here are the 4hour renders

05 May 2004, 07:15 PM

I lost the first one cos a z-brush crash so I restarted with another skull-like model. This is the first step, z-brush only.

05 May 2004, 06:50 AM

...and this is the result after adding teeth in 3 min, and rendering in MAX, the GI test are with Brazil & Vray.
