View Full Version : Matte: Alien environment

Hi there,

I once tried to project paintings on 3D-geometries.
Since Cinema 4D 8.5 supports camera-projection, it's fun to use
this feature.

I've created an alien environment, which I want to use for a

Why do I post this thread in the 2D-Section?
Because the most work I've done, is painting the matte with Photoshop 7. The block model was modelled in a couple of minutes with Cinema 4D, so it's not worth posting that in the 3D-section:

This's the blockmodel I started with:

As you see, at the first I've choosed some warm colors.
Later I replaced them with colder ones.

It would be interesting to know, what you think
about this way starting of a painting.
Feel free for critics and comments.

wow.... thats a really cool looking matte!

I like the colder colours with alien scenes, its more... fitting, so stay with them..

are you doing anything else with the picture?

Thanks LGFX for your reply!

I've just finished up a small demoreel which includes the last works I've done, including it's breakups and final useage.
I'll post it as soon as possible. So you'll see how it's done and what for it's used! :bounce:

At the moment I'm trying various codecs for encoding
the reel in a webcompatible format.
It's about a minute and size differs between 9Mb and 30Mb.
The original PAL (768x576) interlaced one measures 280Mb,
with own Music of course.

The making of this pic is included too:

Hi, there!

I've finally uploaded the "making-of"-reel.
At the end of the reel there's the final usage shown of the matte.
The reel shows progressive steps from the beginning to the end of various artworks.

The 1min-30sec-quicktime-clip is encoded with Sorenson 3 and MPEG-4-Audio.

20.3 MB Quicktime Movie @ 480x360: (

9.9MB Quicktime MPEG-4 @ 320x240:

The sky and the background consists of five photos, which where
composited together. After that I painted in the lighting and the lightspread in the atmosphere.

The moon was added at last. Now I've replaced it. Hope the lighting fits a little bit better than before. Actually I would see
a fine corona of the moon but it depence on the distance of moon and alien sun ;)

Thanks for your helpful critique anyway

BTW, The painting demo can be conviniently viewed here (
Streaming doesn't work well, when direct links are applied,
so I've set up a small page on (
