Hi all :) !

This is my first work posted here and I'm little bit ... nervous :).
It’s an emotional android made for a contest. Maybe it’s not exactly finished, but I’ve sent it the last hour … there wasn’t much time.

Made for 40 days (well i know it's funny but... it was my fifth scene with this android... and the 16th verison of the textures ... I just didn't liked it and .. del was the magic button)

MAX 6 + Vray with photoshop 7 for textures and post editing
Faces : 385136
Rendering time – 4 hours

and a big verison

04-13-2004, 12:05 PM
Very nice and clean! Like the textures and the emotion of the droid! Good job!

04-13-2004, 12:09 PM
if you have time, try to rerender with better antialising on the glass, but aside from that, this is amazing! the expression is just terriffic! which contest are you submitting this to?

04-13-2004, 12:12 PM
very nice:thumbsup: I love the lighting in the picture. I real like that typ of pictures.

04-13-2004, 12:12 PM
hm fantistic render & texturing

:scream:

04-13-2004, 12:21 PM
Very nice. I like the scene. His expression is terrific. He is too sad. Very well done. The reflection on the bulb is nicely realistic. I'd love when someone is keeping so much attendtion to details. The textures the rust on the robot and the capsules are very well done and with many care. Great job man. I saw on the label that this image was on competition or something. This is a fronpage stuff. I hope that you have won the competition.

Just set AA to more higher values and make an more contrast render of this scene. I will be fantastic. Put some detail renders at this post. Try to use direct Gi compulation in V-ray to get more realistic touch. If you have used it add some more samples.

04-13-2004, 01:41 PM
This is front page worthy in my opinion!

There is only one thing that bugs me. The tube like structures around the glass dont look like they have eny thick ness and seem like they should have more shadow inside a few of them but other than that its great.

04-13-2004, 02:18 PM
Athenaatje – thanks
Catbert – Thanks .You are right about the antialising… I made the situation even worse with a little sharpen with PS .
The contest is the graphilla robot contest.
NeBuLa – Thanks
SideShow – Thanks!
Sqwall - yes it’s rendered with irradiance map … medium (not enough time ). Maybe next time I’ll use direct computation…

I didn’t won … infact I’m not even close to the winner.

LuWeeWu – Thanks for replaying ! Yes you are absolutely right about the tubes … I must be more careful next time …

I'm very glad that you all like it :)!

04-13-2004, 03:15 PM
ehy !!! finally a great robot design...

04-13-2004, 03:51 PM
yeah, very nice!!

04-13-2004, 04:08 PM
Heheh I love the expression on his face :D

04-13-2004, 04:29 PM
Very nice.

Love the reflections on the glass. Should be on the front page!

04-13-2004, 04:48 PM
Don't so nervous,u r nice! i like the pic :applause: :applause:

04-13-2004, 05:13 PM
that certainly looks excellent

04-13-2004, 06:04 PM

this robot is full with expressions

wonderful job man

04-13-2004, 06:19 PM
fantastic job

04-13-2004, 07:34 PM
Well done, his expression is outstading. On thing bothers me though and I'm not sure if its the camera angle, but where his right hand is, the glass is slightly warped, the curve is too sharp, creating a kink.

04-13-2004, 08:18 PM
realy great...

i love this pic.

the shaders are realy well done

04-13-2004, 08:30 PM
Looks pretty good! ConcreteDonkey! :)

04-13-2004, 08:34 PM
aw.......... he look so sad  I love it, you really create the emotional:buttrock:

04-13-2004, 09:02 PM
amazing. nice work on the expression. Somehow all the key elements of expressions are in. funny how you fixed the eyebrows.

shaders are cool too imho

Pluggin advice from me

04-13-2004, 09:33 PM
amazing! The reflection was what caught my eye first, but in a great way. The expression on his face is fantasic. GREAT WORK.

04-14-2004, 12:42 AM
What really knocks me out here is the bare hallway behind the camera that you see in the window. Man, that's detail and metaphoric perfection:bowdown:

04-14-2004, 08:19 AM
Very well done, I absolutely agree Sqwall's thoughts.
This picture tells us somethin, and not just an empty character.

04-14-2004, 10:07 AM
excellent work dude..nice

04-14-2004, 10:12 AM
Nice use of texture to make him look unhappy, and very nice reflection!! Good job.

04-14-2004, 10:14 AM
Great stuff, Very much Marvin the paranoid android. I think I like this better then the one design for the Hitch hikers guide movie.

I agree on the anti-aliasing for the glass

04-14-2004, 10:19 AM
Too cool, if C3P0 had an expression, that would be it! lol. The only thing that caught my eye, and this is being picky, is the thumbs. they look like they would bend in the same direction as the finger. I would like to see them be more "opposable". Other than that, sensational piece of work! i would love to see any concept art you did prior for this piece.

04-14-2004, 10:19 AM
interesting concept. Great use of color to convey mood. Just looking at it I'm a little confused at what's going on.... but it's interesting enough to keep me looking at it. Nice work.

04-14-2004, 10:25 AM
i like the image, but i don't like the view u have chosen....

04-14-2004, 10:26 AM
amazing...truly emotional render :)

John Lee
04-14-2004, 10:31 AM
very nice stuff :)

04-14-2004, 10:48 AM
I like the glass the way it is now, maybe the caracter need some finetuning.

04-14-2004, 11:15 AM
great work!:buttrock:

ring man
04-14-2004, 11:17 AM
i like this character, he is very expressive.
very great work !!

04-14-2004, 11:35 AM
all that's left for me to say is - great work, keep it up dude !

04-14-2004, 11:40 AM
Outstanding!!! You're da man!!!:bounce:

04-14-2004, 12:25 PM
hm fantistic render & texturing

04-14-2004, 01:15 PM
Very nice
Wish u luck:applause:

04-14-2004, 01:34 PM
Very imaginative and lovely render. Fantastic use of texturing and lighting..

04-14-2004, 02:37 PM
First, I have to say that this is great work :D As almost everyone has said, this image has a lot of detail and great reflections.

The only thing that bothers me is the tubes on the background wall. They should have at least some thickness, not just surfaces. You can especially notice it in the wireframe view, where the tubes seem completely hollow. Also, the wall and the tubes seem to be a little too low-poly. You shouldn't be able to see the corners so clearly.

And, if you don't have time to do great anti-aliasing, don't sharpen the image ;)

Otherwise great emotion, It's especially hard to achieve on non-organic things.

04-14-2004, 03:24 PM
but why s the oval sphere so high poly ?

04-14-2004, 03:25 PM
good job !

04-14-2004, 04:20 PM
cool work man ,,

can we see the render setting :),

i really want to learn this render style:thumbsup:

04-14-2004, 04:28 PM
Thank you all :) I’m very happy to see so many comments
The render settings are not anything special really – the scene has only e-light with HDRI map. Rendered with Vray with default settings… medium quality iradiannce map … as Sqwall said it will be better with direct computation but… time was running out.

04-14-2004, 04:28 PM
Heheh this is a great scene. Only thing i notice is that glass of that shape should distort the appearence of an object inside it more.

Amilton Diesel
04-14-2004, 04:52 PM
yes, the character have a nice sense of emotion, and technicly the image is perfect.

04-14-2004, 04:58 PM
Very Asimov-ian. Thats how i picture the robots in his stories

04-14-2004, 05:43 PM

04-14-2004, 06:02 PM
You could delete some edges but is ok. I liked the textures. Good work.

04-14-2004, 07:24 PM
Great work! This picture is worth a million words.

04-14-2004, 09:07 PM
Wow, way to blow everyone away on your first post! Beautiful work, very well done.

04-14-2004, 09:09 PM
I have no critical statements to make. I will be an additional comment congratulating you on your wonderful and creative display and the artistry you possess with your software and renderer. I wish you the best of luck in your future artistic endeavors.

Gives off an interesting emotion. Textures and lighting are done well. No major crits from me. Looks great.

04-14-2004, 10:50 PM
wow? :)

floor meets base...only critic..

04-15-2004, 12:59 AM
very very very nice work. No real crits. Whe I first looked, I thought it was a painting. Great work.,

04-15-2004, 01:39 AM
Nice work!

I don't like how thin the body plates are though; no sense of thickness/weight.

04-15-2004, 08:58 AM
I love it

Bravo ! :)

04-15-2004, 10:06 AM
Really love da character!!

Great work.

04-16-2004, 12:12 AM
great work and the detail is excellent. I'm interested in knowing where the idea came from?

04-16-2004, 12:02 PM
One of the best pieces I've seen on the forum lately.

Excellent work.

04-16-2004, 01:20 PM
I love it!!!

I feel for the android, he just looks so sad. Good job giving him (or her) life.

The textures, reflections, and colors blend together perfectly.

Will you be making an animation of this or was this created just to make a still? I want to see the droid escape!!!!!

04-16-2004, 01:27 PM
nice job ! :)

04-16-2004, 04:16 PM
I like everything in the scene !

Gentle Fury
04-16-2004, 04:59 PM
very nice work. It's very Issac Asimov. Just in time for the I, Robot movie (god i hope it doesn't suck as bad as it looks like it will.)

04-16-2004, 08:18 PM
Thank you all :)))!!
betacam - I'm very bad animator , besides the model isn't very animateable...
it's him ;)

KWAK - I just don't know what else to say ...

04-16-2004, 11:40 PM
Great rendering, modeling and textures. One of the things it would make it better is the camera position. If you move down the camera, lowering the horizon line, would make the scene more dramatic.

Another thing is the character silhouette. His left arm is in front of the body. If you open it a bit to the right it will be cool.

You are a great artist.

:buttrock: Amazing Work!!!:buttrock:

This has been on the front page for a while, and every time I come back, it keeps picking at the corner of my eye...

Into the inspiration folder it goes. Wonderful, evocative work.:applause:

bevel the edges of those tube thingies.

Awesome work. Really shows a sad robot (as if robots are people! Come on! Humans UNITE! We need to make it a priority that silicon does not replace flesh and blood. Robots are to make our world better, but when we open up this idea of a machine with emotions, what this actually signifies is our hatred of our own perfection. We are humans and we are NOT flawed. We are nature. Humanity is NOT defined by what we create, NOT defined by what we are not, NOT defined by how much money we make, NOT defined by our education level! If you give a robot an inch, it'll take the cake and shove it in your face and spit doubt down your throat. The scientific elitists of this world want you to create these idols. STOP I SAY!!!!!!
Bytes aren't free. Every one counts.
If robots are so cool, what are we? The God or the Slave? Gods don't make shrines to slaves.
That is all.)

Love it. You have some real talent there.

I really start to like them... It's my second scene enlighted only with e-light with a HDRI map ... :)

The first looked much worse...

05-30-2004, 09:32 PM
Taking a bunch of polygons and textures and pulling true emotion out is a gift.Dont worry about it,great job!!The design is fantastic although i think you could have put a little more depth inside the pod like some shadows or even volume , liquid ,fog or a bit a frost, helps magnify the sadness(mood)........anyways fantastic work and i hope to c more of it in the near future ciao friend.

05-31-2004, 07:44 AM
:wavey: thank you all :)

geero you are right - the scene has no depth at all.
