Hi all :) !

This is my first work posted here and I'm little bit ... nervous :).
It’s an emotional android made for a contest. Maybe it’s not exactly finished, but I’ve sent it the last hour … there wasn’t much time.

Made for 40 days (well i know it's funny but... it was my fifth scene with this android... and the 16th verison of the textures ... I just didn't liked it and .. del was the magic button)

MAX 6 + Vray with photoshop 7 for textures and post editing
Faces : 385136
Rendering time – 4 hours

if you have time, try to rerender with better antialising on the glass, but aside from that, this is amazing! the expression is just terriffic! which contest are you submitting this to?

Very nice. I like the scene. His expression is terrific. He is too sad. Very well done. The reflection on the bulb is nicely realistic. I'd love when someone is keeping so much attendtion to details. The textures the rust on the robot and the capsules are very well done and with many care. Great job man. I saw on the label that this image was on competition or something. This is a fronpage stuff. I hope that you have won the competition.

Just set AA to more higher values and make an more contrast render of this scene. I will be fantastic. Put some detail renders at this post. Try to use direct Gi compulation in V-ray to get more realistic touch. If you have used it add some more samples.

LuWeeWu
04 April 2004, 01:41 PM
This is front page worthy in my opinion!

There is only one thing that bugs me. The tube like structures around the glass dont look like they have eny thick ness and seem like they should have more shadow inside a few of them but other than that its great.

ConcreteDonkey
04 April 2004, 02:18 PM
Athenaatje – thanks
Catbert – Thanks .You are right about the antialising… I made the situation even worse with a little sharpen with PS .
The contest is the graphilla robot contest.
NeBuLa – Thanks
SideShow – Thanks!
Sqwall - yes it’s rendered with irradiance map … medium (not enough time ). Maybe next time I’ll use direct computation…

I didn’t won … infact I’m not even close to the winner.

LuWeeWu – Thanks for replaying ! Yes you are absolutely right about the tubes … I must be more careful next time …

I'm very glad that you all like it :)!

Well done, his expression is outstading. On thing bothers me though and I'm not sure if its the camera angle, but where his right hand is, the glass is slightly warped, the curve is too sharp, creating a kink.

What really knocks me out here is the bare hallway behind the camera that you see in the window. Man, that's detail and metaphoric perfection:bowdown:

Great stuff, Very much Marvin the paranoid android. I think I like this better then the one design for the Hitch hikers guide movie.

I agree on the anti-aliasing for the glass

Too cool, if C3P0 had an expression, that would be it! lol. The only thing that caught my eye, and this is being picky, is the thumbs. they look like they would bend in the same direction as the finger. I would like to see them be more "opposable". Other than that, sensational piece of work! i would love to see any concept art you did prior for this piece.

First, I have to say that this is great work :D As almost everyone has said, this image has a lot of detail and great reflections.

The only thing that bothers me is the tubes on the background wall. They should have at least some thickness, not just surfaces. You can especially notice it in the wireframe view, where the tubes seem completely hollow. Also, the wall and the tubes seem to be a little too low-poly. You shouldn't be able to see the corners so clearly.

And, if you don't have time to do great anti-aliasing, don't sharpen the image ;)

Otherwise great emotion, It's especially hard to achieve on non-organic things.

decipleofX
04 April 2004, 03:24 PM
but why s the oval sphere so high poly ?

ConcreteDonkey
04 April 2004, 04:28 PM
Thank you all :) I’m very happy to see so many comments
The render settings are not anything special really – the scene has only e-light with HDRI map. Rendered with Vray with default settings… medium quality iradiannce map … as Sqwall said it will be better with direct computation but… time was running out.

Heheh this is a great scene. Only thing i notice is that glass of that shape should distort the appearence of an object inside it more.

I love it!!!

I feel for the android, he just looks so sad. Good job giving him (or her) life.

The textures, reflections, and colors blend together perfectly.

JUST ONE QUESTION:
Will you be making an animation of this or was this created just to make a still? I want to see the droid escape!!!!!

Great rendering, modeling and textures. One of the things it would make it better is the camera position. If you move down the camera, lowering the horizon line, would make the scene more dramatic.

Another thing is the character silhouette. His left arm is in front of the body. If you open it a bit to the right it will be cool.

You are a great artist.

bevel the edges of those tube thingies.

Awesome work. Really shows a sad robot (as if robots are people! Come on! Humans UNITE! We need to make it a priority that silicon does not replace flesh and blood. Robots are to make our world better, but when we open up this idea of a machine with emotions, what this actually signifies is our hatred of our own perfection. We are humans and we are NOT flawed. We are nature. Humanity is NOT defined by what we create, NOT defined by what we are not, NOT defined by how much money we make, NOT defined by our education level! If you give a robot an inch, it'll take the cake and shove it in your face and spit doubt down your throat. The scientific elitists of this world want you to create these idols. STOP I SAY!!!!!!
Bytes aren't free. Every one counts.
If robots are so cool, what are we? The God or the Slave? Gods don't make shrines to slaves.
That is all.)

Love it. You have some real talent there.

Taking a bunch of polygons and textures and pulling true emotion out is a gift.Dont worry about it,great job!!The design is fantastic although i think you could have put a little more depth inside the pod like some shadows or even volume , liquid ,fog or a bit a frost, helps magnify the sadness(mood)........anyways fantastic work and i hope to c more of it in the near future ciao friend.
