Pablo Valbuena has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.

Hi, this is one of the first ideas that came to my mind when i saw the title of this challenge.

The character is going to be a mecha-insect. An improved insect with nanomachines.

I like the idea of giving it a "comunity thinking" property like ants or bees. The one who thinks is not the individual, it's the whole comunity of them...mmmm, i´ve got to improve this idea.

Ok, hope you enjoy my sketches.

Comments and critiques welcome.

04 April 2004, 05:24 PM
Kinda looks like a dragonfly.

Pic itself is neat, but i hope you wont leave people quessing what it is too much.

If you want to bring out that community thinking theme, maybe there needs to be shown hundreds of these insects.

So i hope you get good ideas in future also.

My C&C are over.

04 April 2004, 07:11 AM
Thanks, Falcor.... i have a bunch of sketches made 2 or 3 weeks ago when the challenge started.

They are all insect-machine hybrids based on different insects. Now i'm not sure if the character is going to be only one of these...or it's going to the "community" idea.

Anyway, the next days i'll post all the sketches...

Here is another concept. Mosquito based.

04 April 2004, 11:08 PM
i really like your stuff, it looks really great ! do you just draw it with a wacom or do you sketch it on paper and scan it in?
your use of black and white is mindblowing!

04 April 2004, 01:21 PM

WOW! Great sketches. I love your style. How did you make it? Very original looking!

Good luck!!

04 April 2004, 01:40 PM
You concept is so good to me, it can actually be an entry.
Are you using painter. I'm new to that program. You make it seem like I have a lot to learn. Good Luck.

Thanks for the feedback guys !

It is just Photoshop with the wacom and a sharp brush, using only black and white with 100% opacity.

The only variation is the size of the brush and b or w. ( if you know hawkprey, i took this technique from his tutorial and made some adaptation ) :wip:

It works great with quick sketches.

More to come with the same technique.

04 April 2004, 09:35 AM
Really Cool Idea.

Love the way you have put them together. I also really like the way that its not cristal clear and alot of what is going on with the mecha parts is obscured.

Great stuff. Love the style.
04 April 2004, 05:41 PM
I prefer the number 4 and then the 5.

04 April 2004, 07:51 PM
freaky stuff man, but how is flesh incorporated into this, it is in the form of a bug, but that would make it a robot? que no?

04 April 2004, 02:08 AM
Your concepting style really rocks. The dark lines are great, and your page layout is cool. Your style reminds me of someone, but I can't remember the name. Keep it coming.

04 April 2004, 09:06 AM
Thank you guys....

I'm starting to focus on the final composition, with the environment and the final characters defined...

The concept is really nice :applause: And even the test color is great. It's like some heroic/fantasy scene (it's not a mockery, I LOVE heroic/fantasy art). Very cool :buttrock:

It's getting more and more cool ! You chose definitely this view or you'll finish the two (My preference purely personal is to the back view, but, like I said, it's purely personal :D )

nice work the colors

06 June 2004, 05:25 AM
The patches of vibrant color could be a little distracting. Cool scene though.

06 June 2004, 01:29 AM
Well aint this a highly interesting piece of work.
Those vibrant colours will work well I think. Kind of like the fluorescent glow some insects have.
