Mats CE Gustafsson has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.

This is some background info for my concept sketch.

This is my concept sketch for the Machineflesh Challenge.

Nice idea and it could make for a good scene, seeing the plaque busters floating in an artery ^0^
It might be harder to make an evocative scene, since the enhancement is in the body and you don't see any characters there but maybe you can show in a way that it helps save lives. Or go for a catoony tour such as in the osmosis jones movie :)
04 April 2004, 08:27 PM
I can see your point. My concept lacks a character that you can identify with.
04 April 2004, 01:52 PM
This is my second concept sketch. I have developed my 'plaque busters' theme a little further. The tail of the bacteria consists of strands of a transparent material that leads light. It acts as a lightsource. There are also light-pulses that travel along the strands. They are reflected from the arterial walls and are used for detecting plaque. The light-pulses also causes dot patterns to appear on the arterial walls.

I thought that medical info was for real.
Hope you will make the arteries look really nasty and real. Good luck this is nice idea you got there.

The press-clipping is from 2542 when science has advanced far beyond anything that is seen today...
04 April 2004, 06:22 PM
I am working out the design of my robot-germs.
There will be four types and each will have its own unique personality.
04 April 2004, 06:30 PM
The excavation unit uses its movable jaw for digging.
04 April 2004, 06:33 PM
The scraping unit uses its hooks for scraping.
04 April 2004, 06:38 PM
The vacuum unit works like a vacuum cleaner.
04 April 2004, 07:50 PM
I thought of doing something like that myself, but it's not
that easy to illustrate. I'll be on the lookout for this one :)
Keep it up!
04 April 2004, 06:59 PM
Yes, it is very hard to visualize. I think it will require more concept work to get to what I had in mind.
04 April 2004, 12:03 PM
I am trying a new approach - giving my robo-germs a meaner, moore machine-like, mechanical look.
04 April 2004, 01:13 PM
this looks cool , although the germs in the previous
pics were more varied , these ones look all look cooler
04 April 2004, 01:58 PM
Yeah definetly looks cool. Makes me go eww when i see those kind of blood sucking insects. I can imagine them sucking inside your vains until they get 100x bigger and look like they are ready to explode.
I would also think that dont loose the original idea even thought these new ones look cool.
Maybe some reffing from microscopical animals would do the trick?
So they wont end up looking like building sized insects only microscopical
04 April 2004, 06:50 PM
I felt something was missing in the picture though I couldn't put my finger on it.
I guess you get 'blind' on your own pictures. I will try to add more variety to my picture.
I will try to merge this concept with my original idea.
Definitely a good idea to look for references on microscopic animals, it didn't even occur to me.
05 May 2004, 03:11 PM
I am still trying to get the right look and feel for my concept sketch.
I looked up some reference material on microscopic animals.
I have tried to keep true to the original idea.
I also tried to put more variation into the design of my creatures.
05 May 2004, 06:26 PM
I think I got the germs body to look OK finally. Mechanical parts could be better, but this was the best I could think of now.
06 June 2004, 02:19 PM
I added more details to my robo-germ.
06 June 2004, 04:02 AM
Beginning to add color to my picture.
06 June 2004, 03:51 AM
Minor adjustments and color changes.
06 June 2004, 04:57 PM
Big changes in concept & design.

Line Art: Line drawing 02
I liked that one a lot!
Wish you would have stayd with it. Only thing wrong was the coloring. Otherwise i really liked it :D
I dont think you should use wild color changes.. I think just sticking to flesh tones and doing that tiny organism would have worked. Something subtle perhaps?
But thats just my guess. Keep at it
06 June 2004, 05:17 AM
Thank you for your input.
I think you are right in that Line drawing 02 looked more appealing. You are also right about that the coloring was too exaggerated. The reason I changed the drawing is that I felt it was unlogic. This takes place on the microscopic scale so things should look different from every-day things around us. But at the same time it is hard to draw something that looks totally unlike anything that we are used to. I think this is the reason that it is so hard to make this concept look good.

Another update. Just a few days left..
06 June 2004, 07:34 PM
Another day, another update.
06 June 2004, 07:42 PM
Trying to simplify design and coloring.
06 June 2004, 04:55 PM
Final coloring. Decided to use a simplified coloring scheme. Also simplified my robo-germs to get closer to my original idea for the picture.
06 June 2004, 05:09 PM
Looking really cool.
I wasnt so sure how this was going to come together.
I have to say I wasnt so keen on the cute look but your final colouring looks REALLY cool.
06 June 2004, 05:11 PM
This is the final image.
06 June 2004, 05:34 AM
Thank you for your comments.
I really had big problems doing this drawing and was not sure if I would be able to finish it. So I am quite happy with the end result. I think think the general look & feel is reasonably close to my original conception.
