View Full Version : Cute Creatures-session

04 April 2004, 07:31 PM
hey guys. going to start a new session on cute monsters.

the whole point with this challenge will be to create a little critter that could fit into a game like final fantasy ( think enemies ).
or something like by brian froud, or digimon.. etc.

the rules are:

1.)you have 4 hours to work on it.

2.)2 hours into working, you have to post your progress.
as well as your finished piece

3.)has to be related to the topic.

heres an idea of what were thinking about.

good luck to everyone.! ( if anyone enters ;) )

rsjrv99 : how you distribute your time is up to you.

ila_solomon : I expect to see a cow from you.

Joebount : right, no pokemon lookalikes, like you say, they are evil ;)

04 April 2004, 02:56 AM
wow, this is exactly what I love to do. I hope I can find the time to make a little something.

04 April 2004, 03:08 AM
4 hours total, I'd like to join in too. do a cram session on evening.

04 April 2004, 05:41 AM
This was made in XSI 3.5 and textuerd with photoshop. The modeling didn't take to long as its a pretty simple character design. This is also the first time I've experimented with using displacment maps on a character.
Here is screen shot from about 1 1/2 hours in.

And here is the final product. Time to finish: 3 1/4 hours.

04 April 2004, 06:02 AM
Here's my 2 hour progress (in Cinema4D):

Am I allowed to finish the other 2 hours after I get some sleep?

-Amnesic Elephant

04 April 2004, 09:59 AM
my entry :)

after two short hours

gotta take a break first :wise:

04 April 2004, 10:09 AM

04 April 2004, 10:19 AM
I have a sudden urge to do a moggle .... hmmm:p

04 April 2004, 11:05 AM
I'm started at to this 12.15 and it's 14.05 now. Not bad for me.

04 April 2004, 12:09 PM
anuarnor - I love your cute monster ;)
keep coming

04 April 2004, 01:43 PM
Here we go:

Edit: Sorry, I've forgot the wires.

04 April 2004, 03:58 PM
am i allowed to do sketches before actually starting the 4 hour modelling process?

04 April 2004, 04:10 PM

Eric Rain
04 April 2004, 04:22 PM
Well 20 minutes of work... Just for fun (I know it's quite shitty)

04 April 2004, 04:22 PM
am i allowed to do sketches before actually starting the 4 hour modelling process?

Is this even a question ?

am i allowed to go to the bathroom before crapping my pants Momy?

04 April 2004, 05:06 PM
im still a n00b but hey, here's my entry:

04 April 2004, 05:09 PM
Is this 3d only or can I do 2d characters as well?

04 April 2004, 06:06 PM
Oops... Just noticed it was a sub-catagory of the modeling thread. I clicked on the image on the front page. It's not medium specific. Thanks Fire...

04 April 2004, 07:49 PM
What forces in the world will prevail you from posting a 2D image on this board ?

look there's a fence dont try to escape

04 April 2004, 08:14 PM
Total time about 2 hours 45 minutes. I don't think I can do much more with him

04 April 2004, 08:41 PM
Well it's not very complicated, so I finished this a bit under 2 hours. I hope it can be my 2 hour 'report' and finished model...

It's a tumble bee. I might try to give him a more competent flying mechanism, or at least a nice array of hats.

I might have a crack at something a bit more complicated later in the week.

04 April 2004, 08:44 PM
wow aj thats reeaaaly cute :D

04 April 2004, 09:01 PM
I dared to make a moogle, so here it is. :p

It took me about 2 hours and a minute work.

04 April 2004, 09:21 PM
AJ - that Tumble bee is *brilliant*!!

If it were up to me, I would declare you the winner...

(yes I know there are no winners here) :D

04 April 2004, 09:44 PM
wooo! that's sooo cute Aj. :)

04 April 2004, 10:01 PM
AJ_23 - Wonderful Wonderful!

look there's a fence dont try to escape
That's beautiful, Peanut. You've inspired me to come back to this thread tonight after work.

04 April 2004, 11:17 PM

That is the cutest thing I have ever seen, and I watch kids morning TV.:surprised

You gotta animate this thing AJ! Seriously!

04 April 2004, 01:03 AM
ok, this is what it ended up like, basically all worked on was the face, with most of the time spent on cleaning up the ugly polyflow, if anyone wants to play around with the mesh then let me know and I'll upload it to my webspace.

ambient-whisper, won't you model any cool creature? I was hoping to see more screenshots from clay, and your models are always great!

04 April 2004, 02:15 AM
I took the simple cue from AJ. Awesome charcater BTW.

the sparky
04 April 2004, 02:15 AM
AJ, that TumbleBee is so cute. I want to hug it. :)

04 April 2004, 02:24 AM
Hey everyone, This is the first time I've done this but I just couldn't resist this one. It took about an hour to model this but another hour and a half to ready him for the render. It's kind of funny because I always have to tell producers that see how fast I can model that it's that last 20% of a job that takes the longest. ;)

I plan on ataching the fingers and smoothing out some of the details that are catching my eye right now as I look at the image... anyway, I'm done for now. I'm not working on anything right now so I think I'll do some little animations with him too.

04 April 2004, 02:34 AM
Hey AJ_23, I absolutely love the tumble bee! It's so subtle but the proportions are fantastic. Very nice. I think It's funny; I actually had a really hard time on this one trying not to add more detail. Like around the shoulders on my model. Every little crease winds up working against you with a character like this. I'm really interested in seeing what Ambient Whisper and the hi-detail guys come up with.

04 April 2004, 02:39 AM
Really great works everyone! Love that tumble bee AJ. Good topic too..

Heres my doodle...

I'll try and make him more cute with the remaining time :)..

04 April 2004, 03:16 AM
Here's my final:

04 April 2004, 04:28 AM

Softimage. Needed a break...I am animating all the time and...I am not an animator. Only took 2 hours....soooo....that's all.

04 April 2004, 04:36 AM
after another 1 half hours.
Lots of tuning and reshaping ahead. Looks like I'm going to miss the 4 hours mark. :(

great work guys.

04 April 2004, 04:49 AM
Here's something I made tonight. His name is Nimbus...

I hope it's cute enough :)

04 April 2004, 05:51 AM
Squiddy the squid, i know very hokie! lol

Working on texturing atm, sleep time until tomorow.

Soeren Nielsen
04 April 2004, 06:16 AM
good stuff guys.

AJ : seriously, that thing is SOOOO cuddly! but I bet its evil! ;)

Fetus : cool stuff man, hes got a complete "duh" expression going on ;)

Keep em coming, cant wait for Friday to arrive so I can enter :)

Just to clear up some things.
1. you can do your concept before starting on the model.
2. Rendertime, and setting up for rendering (lighting etc.) is not a part of the 4 hour limit.

And one last thing. peanut, if you have a need to be a troll, go somewhere else please

04 April 2004, 06:22 AM
entering now

04 April 2004, 08:27 AM
I was wondering what could be cute, a monster, and somehow original, and I think that...

a custom-computer guy/beast monster could be a serious enemy (I realize the winnie-the-poo/coca-cola bear look after I finish it... :surprised )
but then... I tough that he didn't have any weapon, so I attached
those claws, now it's a killing machine and I can rest in peace knowing I have covered all the requirements.

04 April 2004, 08:56 AM
over 4 hours

officialy i'm disqualified :(

A very rewarding experience though.

Edit : SerpenteS-X- thx man, glad you like it. :)

04 April 2004, 10:15 AM
I love all, especially your work anuarnor

04 April 2004, 06:18 PM

04 April 2004, 06:42 PM

Will please tell me how you got bumpy effect on back of your charater???

04 April 2004, 06:50 PM
Hey guys, Im a newb so dont go TOO hard on me. :wip:

I made this guy in about 2 hours, Ill probably go and spend a little more time on him later.

Oh, and that tumble bee is the cutest thing I have ever seen! :scream:

04 April 2004, 10:26 PM
Girl from the ocean
Oh... I see now that my model does not fit very well to this session topic. But my first idea fitted well before I started to modeling. :surprised

Her profile : So, she is a cute girl met on a nomad market settled on a beach. Near a stormy/noisy ocean. Her crown/headband is made of turtle scales, and she has spiraloidic shells as earrings (not to forget the sound of the ocean when she go on continent) and to preserve her chignon. Extra note : if you meet her, lets know how she is talkative and so lovely seductive.

So, do you accept her as a cute creature? :scream:

Don't worry about topology if you are taking care about it... I know that is not good at all, but that was just to shape a face.

04 April 2004, 10:35 PM
I am a little late on this but...Here is what I have done for this little challenge. I am not much of a cut character kind of guy, which is why I wanted to do this and this is what I have done.

2 hour render

Final 4 hour render
I actually didnít get it completed to my liking, the texture needs work, but my time is up and what I have got gets the general idea a across.

04 April 2004, 02:25 AM
Here is a quick one I did tonight called Birdy. I hope you like her...

Nice renders from everyone! What an enjoyable speed modeling session :)

04 April 2004, 07:07 AM
And there's about 4 hours of work.. This is some kind of a rabbit girl. I'm not sure what i was exactly pointing to.

and wires:

An Erased One
04 April 2004, 07:48 PM
Meet Bob, the ... bombing sabre-toothed suicide lizard ... thing.

It took about 2 and a half hours to this point, and there are a lot of things about it that I don't like, but... A well, I tried.
I'll see if I can fix something in an hour or so. :D

04 April 2004, 08:21 PM
3datari : I used zbrush from start to finish for that creature...the bumps on his back are modeled as is everything else. The mesh is extremely dense when working in Z, over 2 million polys...but i could easily pull off the displacment or normal maps and put them onto a lower rez cage for animating in another package. Thanks for your interest.

s_u_m_s_a_r, ionanism, AJ_23, dmonk and Mentat7...nice job guys...I really like all of your creatures. :)

Great work from everyone, don't stop!

04 April 2004, 11:27 PM
this is my 2 hours cute monster.. hem.. well.. not what i expected, still lots of tweaking to do.. the bottom part is not finished:

the sparky
04 April 2004, 01:13 AM
This took me about an hour, I think I still need to spend more time on it, I'll probably make a better neck because the side view bothers me. I'll also try to give the face a little more definition (which is why there are so many subdivisions there)

04 April 2004, 06:14 AM
Whutup Mr. Krol. Good choice on the session--quite the success. Was hoping you'd bust off something for us to gush over (I mean besides the Tumble Bee--KAWAIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!!!!1111oneoneone).

What would AW come up with that he thought was cute? Cmon you know you wanna.

04 April 2004, 10:39 AM

I browsed through your www - some nice stuff there

04 April 2004, 01:25 PM

04 April 2004, 04:10 PM
Lots of very cute Characters!

Here are my last change on my martian balls.
the modeling was pretty fast, it is just a cube with smoothing and extruded faces.I spend the extra time on painting.

04 April 2004, 09:28 PM
Well I have to say so far all of these "Cute" creatures are pretty cool, think i may join in and make something myself!

04 April 2004, 12:47 AM
Some more...

04 April 2004, 04:54 AM
That last one had some procedural texture for fur, but I wanted to do something for this using "real" fur, so here's the "Frayed Teddy":

wireframe 2 (

wireframe 3 (

Blender 2.32, internal renderer. This took about an hour to make and almost 40 minutes to raytrace render because of the complex alphamapping involved here and the complex lighting setup used here. Some post-processing was down to tweak several hairs due to jagged edges resulting from lower than usual oversampling values (mainly to expedite the render process). An extra dot of extra brightness was added to the eyes' specularity.

The main mesh is very low poly while the "fur mesh" in layer two contains several times more vertices for the purpose of overlapping alphamapped teddy hair. Both meshes are shown in the wireframe images above.

I hope everyone has a good weekend and that we get to see a few more creatures :)

Any comments is apriciated, cozz I'm not a pro, any comments would make me happy, coz I want to became a professional CGartist.

The thing that makes it scary is the way the hands are , like ...
Im gonna get u

05 May 2004, 05:20 PM
My first time playing with ZBrush, now my Cupid don't look so cute anymore. Added some details, and this took about 45 mins to complete, so all moddeling took me about 1h and 35 mins. Hope u like it....

05 May 2004, 01:40 PM

ok - repost after the attack :/

Heres my cute crature ... i namend him ralph.
Modeling took 2 hours and 9 minutes.

additional lighting, materials and some fixes in mesh (attach head to body)
took about 1 hour.

As Ambient-Whisper asked for an animation ...

I recreated the "GI" light with soft shadow omni lights and
removed reflection from the wooden desk.
Sounds are in progess.

OK here is it. :)

hope you like it

05 May 2004, 06:09 AM
korn_art: Impressive design and efficent modeling. Somewhat reminds me a bit of grim fandango, not sure why really :P Anyway cute to the bone, ciao!
