Free houdini is coming to town

Free Non-Commercial Version of Award-Winning
Houdini 3D Software Available at SIGGRAPH 2002

Santa Monica, CA (July 9, 2002) award-winning HoudiniŽ family of 3D software, today announced the launch of
the Houdini Apprentice Program. This program includes the Houdini
Apprentice Edition, a non-commercial version of the latest (5.5) Houdini
family of products. Apprentice users can run the complete family of
products which includes Houdini Master, a full-featured animation and
effects package, Houdini Select, an entry-level 3D module, and Houdini
Halo, a stand-alone compositor. Houdini Apprentice Edition is a 2-CD set.
The first "Install" CD contains the software and the second "Learn" CD is
loaded with valuable self-study training resources to help artists get up
to speed with Houdini. The Houdini Apprentice Edition will be available for
the first time to all attendees of the Houdini Annual Meeting during
SIGGRAPH in San Antonio, TX. The meeting will take place on July 21, 2002
at 4:00PM. Event details and required registration are available on-line at

Unlike other software trial versions, Houdini Apprentice Edition offers
access to the complete, full-featured versions of the Houdini family of 3D
software. Work created in the application can be saved to a special
Houdini Apprentice format so that artists can develop real projects with
this free trial version of the software. For customers choosing to purchase
any commercial version of Houdini after building projects in Apprentice,
Side Effects Software will conduct a one-time conversion of Houdini
Apprentice files into the standard Houdini production format at no
additional cost. This conversion offer will be available to licensed users
until December 15th, 2002.

Side Effects Software is known for investing significant energy into
building and educating the Houdini community. The "Learn" CD in Houdini
Apprentice Edition contains 24 self-running video training tutorials hosted
by Side Effects Software production specialists covering the Houdini
interface, modeling, animation, texturing, shading, effects creation,
rendering, and much more CD also includes print tutorials that walk the user through a series of
self-study lessons based on Side Effects Software's popular training
programs held on-site at their Santa Monica and Toronto offices. Numerous
sample files are included on the disc, including a variety of effects and
procedural techniques, from swarming simulations using particle systems, to
rolling ocean waves and explosions, to character animation projects, and
much more. The sample files are designed for the user to modify, and to
encourage experimentation within the Houdini workflow. Several scripts
written to automate Houdini processes in a pipeline environment, along with
extensive product information also appear on the "Learn" CD.

To coincide with the release of Houdini Apprentice Edition, Side Effects
Software will be launching a new Houdini community section on-line to
facilitate the sharing of ideas and projects among Apprentice users at "We have a long legacy of encouraging a
sense of community among our existing user base. With the launch of
Houdini Apprentice, we are excited to nurture a new group of 3D artists,
whether they are training for a new job opportunity, designing 3D for
contest entries or simply designing 3D renderings for personal use,"
commented Paul Salvini, CTO, Side Effects Software. "We developed the
Houdini Apprentice Edition to allow people to get their hands on the
software, take it home, play with it and experience what Hollywood uses for
professional 3D and effects."

About Houdini Apprentice Edition
Houdini Apprentice Edition comes complete with the full-featured shipping
versions of Houdini Master, Houdini Select and Houdini Halo. The
non-commercial key, which is generated and installed automatically via an
Internet connection, allows artists to do everything they can do with the
commercial versions of the applications output resolution up to 640 X 480, a small watermark in the lower right
hand corner of each render, and rendering limited to Houdini Mantra. The
Apprentice Edition was designed to make it possible for artists to render
demo-reel quality work that is not compromised by an obtrusive watermark.
For the entire duration of the Apprentice Program, keys will be renewed
automatically every thirty days via a simple download process. Houdini
Apprentice Edition will be distributed for free at the SIGGRAPH Houdini
Annual Meeting, and subsequently also by request through the Side Effects
Software Web site.

quite clever move from side fx if you ask me. Houdini 5 rocks , make sure to order your cd's.

I have seen Houdini5.5 and I must say it is really cool! Yes, everybody should get their CD and try it out.

07 July 2002, 12:03 AM
Smart move for them, I'll definately give it a shot.

I've been beta testing H5.5 too and its wonderful.

I love Houdini. The people at sidefx are good people. I sure hope this offer makes inroads and increases their user base, would be nice to see some houdini categories on these forums.

Anyway give Houdini a try if you haven't their proceduralism is far more extensive and flexible than other packages. And for those of you that miss marai the new subD and poly tools in H5 are great.

Although others claim to be the first 3D package with an integrated scriptable compositor, Houdini has had one for many more years and the new completely rewritten one is very very fast and efficient.

See you all at the sidefx user group at SIGGRAPH02

I applaud them for making a totally free 3d software that is actually usable:applause: :applause: :applause:. The other aps I hope would learn from this example.

actually its close to the same functionality that xsi demo has, but a little different, a small logo in render output and non-interchageable file format with full version, I can't elaborate more than this public info but if its like the beta I tried I don't feel imposed on at all with the limitations using it to make a demo reel.

maybe they'll put a houdini forum here :) on cgtalk
for now

looks like its the best of both worlds.

file saving ability of maya PLE and small watermark of XSI XP.

I've heard that Houdini interfaces very nicely with Renderman, could anyone in the know elaborate on this? And does this mean that the demo could be made to interface with BMRT fairly painlessly?

damn that sounds great

Houdini interfaces great with renderman, infact the interface is so good that there is a third party plug which allows you to import ribs and reconstruct the scene from them.
But as far as i know the free home edition is limited to mantra rendering, so you would have to convert your renderman shaders to vex shaders (which seems to be quite easy).

OK, where'd you see the original for this? You get this info after registering for the meeting at Siggraph I'm guessing but any further info? Any info on a GNU/Linux version? Will it be available to download and burn to CD?
interested (obviously :D ), Paul

The Apprentice cd will be released on all platforms that Houdini supports. So that would be Windows, Irix, Linux and Solaris.

The cd's are going to be handed out at siggraph initially. Not sure whats going to happen after that though.
