Ooooh so nice, Very nice skill in architectural design. I really enjoy looking over hte detail.

A couple of crits if you dont mind. The fog could be a bit more subtle, looks a bit drastic like it starts to suddenly, and maybe it could be a bit bluer in tint (the fog). Also the image could really use a bit more variation in hue. its very orange.

Really superb!

Very nice.

I do agree that my eyes keep yearning for some softer color than that orange, but it really looks nice despite that.

Great models, textures, lighting, and depth.

05 May 2004, 07:21 PM
Great textures and amazing lighting.

05 May 2004, 07:32 PM
Tres beau, j'aime les detailes. I will agree though that a bit too much of an orange hue, maybe lighten it up a bit. Great job!

05 May 2004, 07:34 PM
Great job! I really like the feel of your image.

- A little too strong, but I really like the depth fading on the buildings in the background.
- The scooter and the person next to it should probably cast darker shadows.
- The street signs look a little blank. Perhaps some text might help?

05 May 2004, 07:35 PM
I love this !! It looks like some ancient culture who has adapated technology ...great idea !! :buttrock:

05 May 2004, 07:35 PM
My only crit is that the people look too stiff. They don't look like they are doing anything, just standing. Maybe if you posed them in more active postures it would look better.

Like the three girls on the left. Maybe you could have them talking abaout the funny thing that happened to them yesterday. One would have her hand or hands out as if she was talking and using her hands as she did. Another could be more in a laughing posture.

I don't know.

Good job though!

05 May 2004, 07:49 PM
ahh I love this. It's almost alive :)

05 May 2004, 07:49 PM
very nice! I love the style you used.

05 May 2004, 07:50 PM
Excellent images WEIHUA

Really like the textures and attention to detail.
How big is this scene as it looks like you have another area at the end of the street.
Also how long did this take you to complete?

05 May 2004, 08:09 PM

05 May 2004, 08:10 PM
looks very nice, why dont you make the ships bigger, for my taste its a little bit too classic

05 May 2004, 08:25 PM

05 May 2004, 08:37 PM
great job , could you tell us more about your film?
Is it a short movie?

05 May 2004, 08:38 PM
absolutely impresive work ;) vray rulezzz :applause:

Mr. Nice Guy
05 May 2004, 08:40 PM
Love the atmoshere in your image . The only think whats bothers me is the scooter. It looks like it flowing. But maybe this come, because it white and is the first thing yopu notice. When this is another colour it will be less eye catching.

But rest of that, the image looks reaaly great. Good textures and good atmosphere of old building and modern transportation.

Can you also post a wireframe. Love to see how far you go in the details.

Keep on going the good work.

05 May 2004, 08:47 PM
vraimet tres belle images !!!

05 May 2004, 08:51 PM
tres, tres belle image !!

05 May 2004, 08:51 PM

nice image... perhaps for the walls on the left side you should go a little bit easier on the bump map values..

05 May 2004, 09:02 PM
Really beautiful image.

As it was mentionned above, i would lessen that bump map slightly, just very slightly.

The flying ship in the first/second one feels like it's just hovering above. How about adding some heat trails after it? maybe a little bit of a blur, so we get the impression that it's moving around the air?

And..last but not least, there's this HUGE black outline of a second plan building in the first picture (right side) gives the whole thing a cartoony feeling, but none of the other building have that. I've been trying to find out exactly where it came from, but I can't see anything that would explain the outline.

:applause:

Bon, vient donc poster de nouveaux renders ici!

05 May 2004, 09:24 PM
beautiful work. very much reminds me of Orson Scott Card's The Memory of Earth ( series of books.

05 May 2004, 09:29 PM
thats amazing..I love it

05 May 2004, 09:51 PM
Great job, amazing lighting, i love it :applause: !

05 May 2004, 10:03 PM
I agree with alot of what was said above. Excellent work. I especially like the cloth on the right. I'd add more of that with some blue and green colored patterns on them. That would soften the overall orange hue and fit the style. I'd like to see a render from higher above so I could see more of the water. Heat wave behind or under the ship would be smart.

05 May 2004, 10:13 PM

05 May 2004, 10:22 PM

05 May 2004, 10:37 PM
Very cool indeed. I have been using VRay on and off and have never achieved lighting like you have. Well done there.

The one thing in the image that strikes me as being odd, is the scooter. I think its case there is this futuristic look with flying ships and architecture, then all of a sudden there is a 1980's scooter.

05 May 2004, 10:38 PM
Love it! But the scene is too bright in general, and the colors on the stone walls seem a little over saturated to be real. Very impressive overall.

(insert happy yellow face here)

05 May 2004, 01:00 AM
Awesome work man!
So imaginary from this job!
The image let's me think about the ps2 game "jak and daxter 2"
but for my personal favor, i like some more air traffic.

05 May 2004, 01:06 AM
Awsome! I love the style, the architecture, the airships. I'm a big FF-fan, especially for the kinds of setting the serie has, and FF is SW-influenced, and your picture reminds me of both! Great! I want to see more in that same style, maybe with a completely different region:)

05 May 2004, 01:24 AM
cool work but the signs in street u have to work on it

very very nice work

05 May 2004, 02:05 AM
Very cool,

Love the feeling and sense of scale.

My only crit:
In real life (and as it is usually represented in film etc.) Clouds tend to cause the shadows to soften ever so slightly. When light from the sun hits the clouds, it causes the rays to scatter and the resulting shadows to soften a bit. I'd love to see the image with no clouds, or the same clouds and a slightly softer shadow.

05 May 2004, 04:05 AM
I think I would lessen the converging lines at the left . Right now it looks a little too wide-angle... maybe a lens adjustment is needed? otherwise very nice work!

05 May 2004, 05:41 AM

However, some little details are bugging me. First of all, the white scooter on the right. I find it too bright and shiny, especially for it being under a shadow. Anyway, I feel it doesn't fit very well in your composition, its style, color, position; why is it there? who rode it from where to where? etc, we have no clue, si context or justification for its presence (and no traces of it's passage on the ground (sand or dirt?)!!

Another thing is the individuals, the people there. They look flat, almost as if they were just a projected texture on a plane. Also, there are so few people around, it feels a little dead. I feel there should be nobody, or, say, a dozen more, walking, talking, etc... to give a feeling of urban life to this alley.

Also, try to put something on the street signs!... ;)

05 May 2004, 07:19 AM
wow, it looks amazing !!!

I'm agree with the others, the scooter make a srange impression or maybe you have to make him more rusty??
And the thing that disturb me a little is that the edges of the building on the left are too much in a straight line, even though the stone looks very bumpy, it's not very realistic...

Mais cela reste une belle image ! :applause:

05 May 2004, 11:38 AM
very good works

05 May 2004, 01:00 PM
great scifi scenes!

05 May 2004, 02:33 PM
Despite others I love the colors of the image. They make a difference.

I also love the very detailed textures and the irregular modeling which brings the image away from the too clean computer look.

Excellent work!

05 May 2004, 02:39 PM

Impressive stuff you've done !!

05 May 2004, 03:22 PM
thats really hook me. totally marvelous perfect texturing and great modeling.

05 May 2004, 03:27 PM

05 May 2004, 05:24 PM
Really nice work !
Amazing !!!!!

05 May 2004, 05:26 PM
Very nice picture , great work

05 May 2004, 06:55 PM
What is this scene, like 300 polys, right? :scream:

05 May 2004, 09:28 PM
it's a great image but I think it could be a lot better.

* you don't have enough geometry to represent some of the structures. Many of the vertical running edges look too sharp and should have a radius or bevel to them and be chipped or roughed up. Other details are nicely modeled. Also, there is insufficient subdvision of geometry around archways and cylindrical structures.

* the texture maps and/or bump maps are not high resolution enough, especially evident on the foreground wall on the left of the screen. They appear too blurry and we aren't even very close to them.

* many of the objects in the shade do not have any kind of shadows, even soft (ambient occlusion) style shadows or directional shading. So they appear flat. They lack "modeling". The girl on screen right is a good example. Even objects in the shade (not lit by the sun) would have contact shadows and soft shadows that "ground" them into the scene. You can fake some bounce and fill light with carefully placed spotlights if you are not using multiple bounce GI. Placing your own accent lights is a good practise. Don't rely on GI to make your scene look good in every area. There doesn't appear to be any GI and/or fill spotlights in the scene, frankly.

* the shadows caused by the sun seem too sharp considering the soft clouds and haze in the sky. Use an area light for the sun and get some attenuation and blur in your long shadows. (penumbra effect).

* on the technical side, your black levels are crushed in some areas and you are clipping the red channel in the highs. This makes it difficult to colour-correct your image in a comp or a paint package. Of course, I'm looking at a .jpg so the original image could be OK.

Generally, my feeling is: everywhere in the scene you have some colour value and should never be 0. Nor should any channel "clip" on the high end. In each case your image can have areas with no detail or lose detail. (quantize).

Keep up the good work and let's see a new version in by Monday, OK? Just kidding, but that's what I hear every day.

05 May 2004, 10:46 PM
I agree with GumboYaYa the orange gives that amzing depth and beauty. I would try to make any blue colours a lot richer as orange and blue are perfectly complementry. Awsome work.

05 May 2004, 12:52 AM
Now thats what Im talking about .

Thats Photo realistic !!!

Now THAT was a great critique. You sir, must come here more often.

05 May 2004, 03:20 AM
good work, its a great image.

The only thing that bugs me is the scooter on the right seems to be floating a bit :/

05 May 2004, 06:50 AM
Wow, this is really sweet looking. I really like the details that you have like the corrosion on the buildings.

05 May 2004, 05:54 PM
Great piece of work with a good sense of space and lighting.
Just one issue:
Although you have tried to conceal the repetition of maps here and there, it is still there and pops up quickly to a trained eye.
Even after scaling the maps in different directions.
Give it a shot by using more variety of textures and it's quite a neat picec of work.
Congradulations on your effort.

Thanks. I hear these kind of critiques every day about my own work so I'm just practising for the day that I get to supervise ;)

However, I don't know if anybody actually listens or responds to the many critiques I've given on CGtalk. I think I've heard back once but since this is the "finished" section I guess it's unlikely anything will change.

Perhaps I should put my energy into responding to the WIP/critique wanted section.

05 May 2004, 09:58 PM
Wow! I just fell in love with this. The colores are awesome, and the details. I love this.  :deal:

05 May 2004, 06:51 AM
well i don't know if he will consider your advices...
but i totally agree with one thing, some chanfer would be very necessary on building edges...
I didn't notice first, but after reading your has to be done !!!! ;)

05 May 2004, 10:39 AM
I like the color of this picture and feel of this picture....

05 May 2004, 11:31 AM
got a new desktop now!

very cool

p.s. as someone said, the tower could have had a bit more sides, you can see where polygons are...

great textures!

Thanks for the replies.

05 May 2004, 12:48 PM
looks great! Very visually pleasing, my only critic is the shadows don't seem to have much depth, which I think you'll find is the cause for the scooter & people appearing to float.

I am still a "lurker" and have yet to complete something I'd dare post. That said, I value commentary such as yours very, very much. I spend considerable time understanding how a serious critique (such as yours) applies to a given image and then work hard at translating this to my own work.

Yes, it is nice to get a compliment or two - but if compliments were the only thing we artists (both wannabe and bona fide) needed we'd just show our pictures to Mom! Real feedback is far more valuable. I for one am listening Mr Foster!

Thanks for your great work.

Wonderful work! I love the texture and architecture... Very surreal with the floating ships going through... was this originally a matte painting or just a finished piece?

I love your Forest City - that is my favorite. I am really interesting in learning how you textured these buildings. I absolutely love the textures with all the various bump maps with cracks and stuff. Please teach us beginners how it is done! And keep posting.

07 July 2004, 02:34 AM
it all looks too blocky...smooth it out a bit more and it'll look better

07 July 2004, 01:16 PM

It's great!
But i wonder if it's long to render.
I hope for you that your movie is not 1h long and not in 2048.

09 September 2004, 12:37 PM
Looks photorealistic man! I couldn't find anything to fix . I'm waiting forward 2 see the movie

10 October 2004, 11:33 AM
Excellent image, great textures and lightning. Just one thing dont fit 100% for me (maybe others dont bother): its about mixing flying ships, scouters and 60's cars. Maybe keeping everything within the same style will be more pleasant, just my personal opinion and hope you dont mind.

And yeah, too orange... Anyway your images are the one of the most imaginative Ive seen in this forum. Please keep posting such good work!
