03 March 2004, 09:54 PM (

This scene was made in 3dsmax R6.0 with default scanline.
The main idea came from a dream, some vision, that I decided to implement. Rendring took quite long - 7days :)
Hope u like it.
Comments are welcome.

definatly gallery work

and image of the month ;)

That's your best work without a doubt even though the others are great too

03 March 2004, 10:31 PM
very very cool, great work

03 March 2004, 10:35 PM
that's one awesome work!

everything looks marvelous! but what i like the most is the after-rain feel that it has....great image!

frontpage stuff IMO

03 March 2004, 12:18 AM
Awesome! How many lights do you have? It's extremely nice!

03 March 2004, 12:22 AM
Thanks guys!
Actualy there are only 2 lights : the skylight and sun light, and tweaked to this result ;)

03 March 2004, 02:00 AM
:applause: :applause: :applause:

03 March 2004, 03:08 AM
Yaeh its nice, but the sidewalk is a little too much extruded and simply doesnt look like a sidewalk, the hose is a little too small, and the trash papers not randomly spaced IMO, the wet street is a plus. But really nice texturing watchout not to rely on bumps only since its kinda repetitive at the end

hope im not to harsh.

03 March 2004, 03:37 AM
Hehe 7 days of rendering... You already got my admiration to be able to wait that long... :)

The mood is amazing, and the wet street is looking very good !
I do agree with peanut for the sidewalk, it look too high, but it does make it looks like a dream, where everything can looks slightly off.... (like the water hydrant, it looks too small too)

BTW the background is really neat too... is it just a picture, or is it 3D too ?

Great job

03 March 2004, 10:14 AM
Yea baground is fully 3d: trees, buildings etc.
About sidewalk, yea, other people mentioned the same.

03 March 2004, 11:04 AM
respect !!!

03 March 2004, 11:09 AM
Brilliant work, definitely has a very photorealistic feel.

rad vision!

03 March 2004, 11:09 AM
really nice looks great.

the background buildings, are they detailed to or really simple.

some wires would be great.. of the scene and the boy, and background buildings etc

03 March 2004, 11:19 AM
Heey, red cross!!

The thumb on the frontpage looked allright though.

03 March 2004, 11:19 AM
You really captured the mood after rain. Great piece!

03 March 2004, 11:20 AM
nice. love the concept/evocative feeling, and the after-rain athmosphere you put in it

03 March 2004, 11:29 AM
I think the wet streat is just AMAZING textured. The crits about the not randomly placed trash is not correct: Wind tends to move trash in a certain directory.

Some crits:
- The glassshader could be better
- The trees could use some more work.

03 March 2004, 11:31 AM
really great work !

respect !!

03 March 2004, 11:32 AM
No comments!!!

03 March 2004, 11:50 AM
Simple amzaing work man. front page all the way. No Crits.

03 March 2004, 11:52 AM
very nice look to it - i just recently tried to make an after rain type scene but this is so much better - i think i may study it :D

03 March 2004, 11:55 AM
7 days to render, HOW DID YOU WAIT THAT LONG? :)

03 March 2004, 11:55 AM
I don't know what to say.. Totally fantastic comes to mind.

*laughs weakly* my computer would have died by then, or i'd have killed my self

awesome job, i don't see anything wrong with the sidewalk, as you said it is a little dreamlike and can have 8 headed dogs for all i care. :bounce:

03 March 2004, 12:46 PM
7 days  , but it worth it

03 March 2004, 12:55 PM
looks really nice! 7days is too long:)

03 March 2004, 12:56 PM

Oh, ok the link who dont see it:

great image..just love the feeling..
my only crit's will be also on the trashes on the sidewalk and the trees...maybe you put some lights linked to the trashes to create some contact shadow..but the shadows under the trashes are too strong and these trashes looks like there are not really on the ground (only the one on the left)..but it is minor details...
again...

03 March 2004, 01:14 PM
scanline roxx :surprised
7days hmm.. did you render it using a zx spectrum or what?

one of the best scanline rendered images ever

03 March 2004, 01:27 PM
those links appear to be dead as well

03 March 2004, 02:03 PM
seven days---- only two lights---- now lookat thaat, you can still achive unbelievable results by only using talent, and not depending from hi-end equipment and sophisticated plug-ins...
This is AWESOME! :bounce:

03 March 2004, 02:27 PM
I like the rainy effect. Very nice.

Modelling wise, I do have some crits:
There are far too many unnecesary polygons in most objects and some polygons missing in spots where you actually need them. For instance in the wires hanging down from the buildings and the cylinder railways. The sidewalk stones uneveness could be done with a displacement map or even just a bumpmap.

Some suggestions overall:
The building in the back comes from 3dcafe or somewhere, I wouldnt use it but model a new one. The sidewalk bricks should be placed differently, like this heavy rainfall would make the sidewalk drift and break up *trust me I know ;) That winding stairway is way too fragile to support a grownup. Actually I think that the entire staircase is dowloaded from a modelsite or comes straight from Max6 StudioVIZ object database. Its not a problem using them off course :) , but Id try and make an effort and change them or at least think about how to use them. For instance make the staircase and railings more sturdy cause you are going to use it outside and it goes up 3 stories high. Like this the drainpipe looks like it can support more weight

I do like the overall idea of the picture but Im sure you could have made the same picture with displacement maps and smart texturing instead of the 8 days render it now takes. My 2 cts, keep it up!

03 March 2004, 02:45 PM
hey man! awesome stuff!
The only thing i don't like are the bottles on the floor (on the left). Doesn't look like glass.

The feeling that it was raining is great! :bounce:

question: 7 DAYS????
why so much?

can you answer that?????????

03 March 2004, 03:01 PM
oh my gosh...its breathtaking

03 March 2004, 03:12 PM
Piece of art!

03 March 2004, 03:39 PM
I would agree with the comment that the cylindrical staircase looks too delicate, you would have to pay me a lot to climb it up...

I would maybe add a support on each step linking it to the center column or a second helicoideal stripe linking the extreme ends together. Right now they seem hanging from a dangerously thin thread.

Great mood!

03 March 2004, 04:06 PM
simply amazing !!! Very very very nice work !

03 March 2004, 04:19 PM
Very very good

Congratulations

03 March 2004, 04:32 PM
7 Days for one frame? Dude that's not fun.

Great work though. Please explain why it took 7 Days of rendering:shrug:

03 March 2004, 04:34 PM
Great Work!!
The wet pavment looks amazing, but I have to agree with peanut about the sidewalk and trash. But a very good image. Makes me feel bad about the crap I make. But still Congratz on getting front page.

03 March 2004, 04:58 PM
This is a great render! I aways say that scanline rendering is the main rendering process that can be used for most 3d renders.

But 7 days? Did you use high resolution textures and 3d models even in scene areas that are hidden from the camera? Did you use lighting arrays or fake GI array lights? If so did you limit your lighting to areas that would actually be seen by the camera?

The beauty of scanline renders is in the speed that you get at render time over raytracing.

If you used selective raytracing for your reflections did you use reflection maps? You can set your reflections to reflect nothing but appear like they are reflecting objects from your scene. I donít know but 7 days seams a bit of a long time for a scanline render of a still scene like this.

In any case render time issues aside, I hope that this will encourage 3d artist to embrace their scanline rendering engines. Long live the scanline render! Hehehe. Yeah!

03 March 2004, 04:59 PM
amazing ART work here dude... brilliant...

nice capture of atmosphere... good colour theme... good texture..

my only comment is... it's good :p

but man... 7 days to render? that's crazy....

keep up the good work!!

03 March 2004, 06:56 PM
Mad Props

03 March 2004, 07:07 PM
izzit the end of the street background u also model it or just composite it? The mood is there... izzit u take 7 days to render? Use wat plugin?

03 March 2004, 07:32 PM
Great! I very much like the reflections at the end of the road, and the other "photorealism"! Rendertime is quite long, but it has a great result! :) Is this the full-res image?!?

Repect  :applause: !

03 March 2004, 08:21 PM
hi !
this picture is PERFECT

but here is a question ;)

can i ask you how you 'did' the water in this scene ?
with what did you place it ?

I can't see the pools of water appear in the wire pics!

thx for the reply in advance!

03 March 2004, 09:36 PM
Ouch so many replays !

Its hard to answer them...
The most question was: render time?

Emm.. it took so long I think couse of scan line and hi-res maps, if u noticed reflections are blurred (antialiasing reflections) I used it to achieve glossy look, default scan line dont support glossy refl as v-ray or Brazil r/s
Next step:
High rays count per sample for GI, the lighttracer I think is a bit too slow, it could be done much faster with brazil, MR or v-ray.

Actual resolution was 1900x1200!

My PC was athlon 1700+ 256RAM

Ofcourse scene wasnt very well optimised for polygons where they belong to be at a bigger count or less.
Scene consists of 1.5 Mln. polys (optimised)

Ofcourse it could be done much better, but I learned a lot making it :lightbulb

I think that couses big render times.

Anyway thanks for comments:wip:

03 March 2004, 09:41 PM
Oh to cachee

Water was done with two planes: one was made with asphalt material and the other with reflection applied to it. Asphalt plane was under the plane(water), I used displacement (map painted in photoshop), and it rises asphalt on top of plane(water).
Thats it ;)

03 March 2004, 09:59 PM
That is incredible, just incredible.

Love the lighting, you really nailed that after rain look.

03 March 2004, 10:22 PM
awesome! I love it. The bottles look a bit flat tho.

03 March 2004, 10:34 PM
Still can't see that image

03 March 2004, 10:37 PM
absolutely beautiful - reminds me of gainax for some reason? really stunning work!

03 March 2004, 12:02 AM
amazing work dude, everything perfect...the wait was worthy :)

03 March 2004, 12:03 AM
looks good!
If its just a still, might I sugest going in and cleaning it up in photo shop?
My main beef is with the end of the foot path on the right. It looks like its floating and needs some grounding. I will attacha pic so you can see what I mean.
Mine on left yours on right
Hope that helps

03 March 2004, 01:02 AM
Very,....... very impressive.

03 March 2004, 01:17 AM
So you DID use GI, right?

I thought you didn't and I was wondering why the hell it would take so long on a scanline renderer. ;)

On another note, what's your computer specs?

03 March 2004, 03:54 AM
must say.........the best part is the wet rainy feel....havent seen a feel like this till date .........

keep 'em coming dude..!!!

03 March 2004, 05:00 AM
Hmmm gr8..
unique subject than the usual one we see as CG.
The mood tempted me to look out thro window to see if its raining here too...

Plus (+)

The drenched road...the light effects really worked out.
The contrast in lighting between the two areas..Very nice

The relative size of the device on the side walk , the cart and the man.. U should have made real cart size.
The bottles and stuffs and gras seams to be 2D.
Some papers are a bit extra glowing.

Indeed its a nice job

03 March 2004, 05:29 AM
first off when seeign the thumbnail on the CGtalk main page it looked like a child staring out at sea from a pier. Then I saw the street. Great Atmosphere, in either case it's great!

03 March 2004, 05:44 AM
To matty2x4

I got your idea. I think this was got couse of front lighting matched angles of border ant the light.

Anyway thanks!

03 March 2004, 08:25 AM
Very nice render, gallery work for sure

my new desktop :D

03 March 2004, 10:19 AM

03 March 2004, 10:52 AM
7 days of rendering.can't believe it.... anyhow, it's awesome dude..... such an awesome work dude!!!! i really attracted by the wet street.....the kind of rainy feel, and the mood of the scene.... GREAT!!!!

03 March 2004, 11:42 AM
Indeed, a pictorial masterpiece at it's finest accord! The lighting and diffused glow effect, made the piece as a whole, dreamlike and trivial. It's like having a deja vu and abnesia at the same time, saying, "I thought I forgot this before." The water refections and the sheen of the asphalt, I believe, creates a sense of emptyness and chilled emotions. You could almost feel the moisture in the air as you imagine being there. Yet, the child have a reassuring stance, almost certain on what lies beyond the dark alleyway. Kudos fellow artist. If Dodgeas3d is the "bible-code"for the word PERFECTION...let there be light!!!! Amen Soul Brutha:bowdown:

03 March 2004, 01:23 PM
wow, nice jpb^^!!

03 March 2004, 01:38 PM
 good...
but the time of rendering is so ..............ha

03 March 2004, 02:00 PM
It's really impressing how you captured the "rainy" look. The street really looks awesome and 100% realistic, but I must say that I am somewhat disappointed by the environment you added left and right to the street. I mean you could have created a really more exciting looking slum housewall with windows and clothes hanging out for drying or smoking chimneys and alle this other stuff but theses stairs just look..., don't understand me wrong, "boring" compared to the excellence of the street itself. The real "WOW-effect" is still missing, go and change it and you will have a real masterpeace! Good luck

03 March 2004, 02:01 PM
woooow this is one of the few pictures where a wet street realy looks like a wet street and not some shiny plastic thingy

great job!!!

03 March 2004, 03:13 PM
and WOW AGAIN...
i would really like to see how you did the wet-asphalt shader... amazing...

03 March 2004, 04:43 PM
By the way, did you try to make several passes for your renderings? maybe then your render times would've been more manageable.
In the 3D industry there are rarely complete scenes that are rendered in one pass.

03 March 2004, 05:23 PM
Labai graziu, ar Jus dirbat kompanijoj ar tik ant saves?? Man idomu kas vyksta Lietuvoj su 3d.

03 March 2004, 06:07 PM
very nice work indeed  it really looks like a dream thinggy . ur lucky ur render didnt droped off be4 it finished or u will have to render again :S

03 March 2004, 07:31 PM
Sveikas Andrius3d.
Seip as dirbu sau, bent jau pakolkas. O tu gal kur uzsieny dirbi ar gyveni?

03 March 2004, 11:23 PM
hehehe..................7 days............... all hats off for did u manage that waiting........

ImaGE looks crit there........

03 March 2004, 11:32 PM
Yea ...with that waiting I was a bit crazy, my roommates thoght that I went out of mind ;), but I had to study and pass some exams, so I left my computer to night and so on...:D

03 March 2004, 12:55 AM
Very good:buttrock:

03 March 2004, 03:35 AM
I'm totally impressed

03 March 2004, 07:43 AM
Puddles on the wet pavement are the biggest achievement of this render (I really like the puddles BTW). The rest looks kinda kitsch. Maybe I'm wrong.

03 March 2004, 02:34 PM
this is a nice shot for max community. eccelent job man.
only one question... what did u usually drink before dreaming stuff like this? at the moment i'm having Barker's Tea :-P.

03 March 2004, 07:44 PM
Looks great, but geez 7 days? i was stunned then i looked at ur wireframe and it made more sense. WHen ur wireframes become so close that u can't see the lines, maybe u should consider cutting it down ohhh...about 20 times.
The modeling is good, but it's not intelligent modeling.

The shading though is reallllly solid

03 March 2004, 09:11 PM
Just to drop a line...

Congratulations DODgeas!

03 March 2004, 12:54 AM
hi, again dodeagas same coments as on 3dk but hi anyway.

03 March 2004, 08:15 AM
Kicking ass. Really beautiful work here, everything from the puddles to the elegant lighting brings this scene to life in a very nice way.

03 March 2004, 03:53 PM
Work excellent!!!

03 March 2004, 05:27 PM
Great artwork...

I looked at it for some minutes and it made me really sad for some reason..
Think it touched me..

5 * of course. There are not many pictures like this I think. Very emotional and also beautiful to look at.

03 March 2004, 01:20 PM
For me.. graet... but this spiral stairs are quite artifical... tubes & other elements of stairs are to thin. And this cart has strange textures...

04 April 2004, 12:33 AM
I can smell the rain, I would want to be there.

04 April 2004, 01:41 AM
Really beautiful piece of art! Very impressive and emotional! Especially child with a toy! A sense of emptiness and endless loneliness is very strong. Great artwork! :applause:

04 April 2004, 02:52 AM
U've got my admiration to wait that long of rendering
But y is the trashpaper in the sideway illuminating?
Cool gallery artwork!!!:applause:

08 August 2004, 04:08 AM
i like the matiaria so much ~~

08 August 2004, 11:44 AM
awesome ilumination...and the textures are great it

08 August 2004, 02:46 PM
little bit amazing...:applause:

11 November 2004, 12:08 PM
It's awesome. Good job.

11 November 2004, 05:17 PM
