There are 2 Different methods.
Filter Polygons selectively removes polygons based on incidence angle or area. With the area option it removes polygons smaller than the specified size in Softimage units. With incidence angle it dissolves polygons whose dihedral angle is less than specified. (in degrees) There is also an option where you can choose whether to Dissolve or Collapse polygons. There is also another option called "Dissolve by Pair " It dissolves polygons sequentially, one pair at a time. This ensures that, for a given polygon, the adjacent polygon being considered for co-removal is the most coplanar one. If this option is off, polygons are dissolved all at once and the end result may consist of large, non-planar polygons. (It only works with the incidence angle filter)
Filter Edges selectively collapses edges based on length or angle. This tool works a lot like Filter Polygons. (It has most of the same features) It has one that Filter Polygons does not. Keep Border Edges Intact, this prevents boundary edges from being removed by the filtering operation.
