Michal Bilinski has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.

Hello everyone, this is my first challenge entry ever so wish me luck. I've chosen a pretty straight-forward concept - a humanoid body stuffed with mechanical parts. In order to make all the organic elements stand out and make the connection of flesh and metal even more drastic I decided to strip the character from it's skin. I'm aiming for sort of a cyber-mage look, the character is not built for hand to hand combat and although it's body has been mechancially augmented it still relies on the power of it's mind when facing it's enemies.
I'll work on this guy the old fashioned way - draw the character with a pencil, ink it and then add color in Photoshop.

pretty cool idea you got there dude :)
Just try not to make it some sort of android like a lot of people tend to do....make him REALLY original.
Originality is what makes a winner I thinks :)

Looks great so far, the pose is very dynamic. I like the skull mask faceplate thing. Good luck with it.
03 March 2004, 12:35 AM
Hi nice work man. The only problem I have with it at this stage is the fact that he has too many loose wires for hand to hand combat what happen if his opponent pull one of the me out.
03 March 2004, 02:18 PM
Hey there, thanks for all the positive feedback. I took a look at all the other entreis, read some of the comments and decided to introduce some slight changes to my drawing... I am dumping the humnoid body form and switching to an animal :). I've checked all the entries, noticed some doggies and turtles but luckily - no frogs. So I shall draw a frog... with a jet engine that improves it's jumping capabilities.
Wonder if you like it better than the previous concept.
03 March 2004, 02:36 PM
Good choice, i think you have a more solid and original idea on the frog design....ill be keeping an eye on this one!
03 March 2004, 02:53 PM
Personnally I prefer the frog concept, it is more original than the first one :)
Nice sketch btw :)
Keep it up!
03 March 2004, 03:59 PM
I am with the frog concept too !
its way more original and smart than the first one ,which looked a bit boring :-/
you could suggect a wiry mechanical object for his tongue too!
03 March 2004, 05:00 PM
yup .. I think we pretty much all agree on the frog!.. it's more "unique".
the only thing for me is that there's no drama or angle to your picture as oppose to your first entry where there's somekinda of movement in your caracter.
For the moment, I find that the frog resemble has a shema, because it is too static. (without saying that the quality of the drawing is bad... on the contrary!!!)
anyways.., this is a suggestion and I must say that as a whole your work is very very GOOD! :) I like it!
03 March 2004, 05:21 PM
Yes, a frog concept sounds cool!
03 March 2004, 07:37 PM
The frog is brilliant - you simply have to do it...
And as an added incentive, If you don't - I'll bloody well cry
03 March 2004, 07:44 PM
Thanks for the comments fellas - I guess it's been decided - a frog it shall be =) I'll post yet another WIP pic once I'm done drawing it.
there's no drama or angle to your picture as oppose to your first entry
The next drawing will featue a more dynamic pose, I promise.
you could suggect a wiry mechanical object for his tongue too!
Cool idea, I will definitely equip my frog with a flexible metallic tongue :p.
03 March 2004, 08:26 PM
YA we are similar in ideas. love your sketch.. good luck....
03 March 2004, 08:59 PM
great sketchie style i like the way you've given the frog a hypnotised eye.
my crit though is lack of back story, at least hint at it especially with this subject. Why has someone given this frog mechanical legs. Also answering this yourself will probably give you more authentic ideas.cheers
03 March 2004, 09:33 PM
I really love the two concept, but the frog is clearly the winner : original, and more interesting than another cyber-warrior.
And, i love frogs, i must admit, especially with garlic and parsley (i'm french...)
You should make a frog equipped with weapons allowing to protect itself against frog eaters...
Good luck ! :buttrock:

Great drawing. I can imagine the storyline revolving around an excapee from a French Resturant, somewhere in a future near you :)
Good luck
03 March 2004, 02:56 AM
wonderful sketch and idea ...beautiful start and wish you all the best with this entry
03 March 2004, 11:26 AM
Thanks for all the words of encouragement and valuable comments folks!
Three pics in this update. First one is the old concept art piece. I'm gonna use this pic as a testbed for my coloring attempts. I've done some rough coloring work just to see how the mechanical parts relate to the organic elements of the frog - not yet happy with it.
03 March 2004, 11:29 AM
Second one is an updated concept pic - more details added to the jet engine cover and rear set of legs.
03 March 2004, 11:30 AM
Third one is the same Frog in a more dynamic pose (caught mid-air after take off =)) not sure if it's better than the static one since some details of the engine are not visible.
03 March 2004, 11:34 AM
my crit though is lack of back story
Oddone - good point, I can't disagree that it would be helpful to have a story for the character before it's actually drawn but it's quite possible that at this stage of development I'd be forced to shape the story according to the drawing not the other way round which is a bit pointless... The idea to draw a frog was pretty spontaneous - an alternative to human body was a body of an animal - the first thing that came to my mind was a jumping frog (actually it was a frog blasting off the ground and leaving a trail of somke behind since I already knew that it has to be a mechanically enhanced creature :)) and that's about it.
Nevertheless I do have a simple background story already prepared and I guess I could use it when I start working on the environment.
03 March 2004, 06:28 PM
On the last one, that frog looks almost like T-rex, big and badass. Powodzenia :)
03 March 2004, 10:33 PM
Comming along really nice... Keep it up...
03 March 2004, 01:42 AM
Just a thought if the frog has these super cool high performance legs to help catch flies. Then cathing normal flies wouldn't be very hard, so having some badass flies! might coo!
keep it up!
03 March 2004, 05:44 AM
Good concept. Wait for more:beer:
03 March 2004, 09:56 PM
but the frog is clearly the winner : original, and more interesting than another cyber-warrior.
looking forward to seeing coloring!!!:bounce:

Kurt B, Shafeek, Tommy Lee, adrixwha -> Thanks a bunch for the kind words guys!
Azazel -> Dziêki :)
Been pretty busy lately and had no time to prepare the lines, I'll do it this weekend so stay tuned for minor updates :)
03 March 2004, 06:21 PM
I guess I'm done working on the lines (I'll probably introduce some minor changes to the image later). Up till now almost everything has been done in a traditional way - I used a thin brush to ink the pencil drawing. Now it's time to add some colors.
03 March 2004, 11:19 PM
Love the frog and the line art its mind blowing. And this is indeed one dynamic pose! Good luck!
03 March 2004, 01:53 AM
I love your concept - very original. The detail you have going in the legs is awesome and totally believable.
Your latest linework looks like the frog has scaly crocadile skin. Is this intentional? I kinda liked the slick amphibian skin you had going in your earlier color test.
03 March 2004, 04:59 AM
Can't wait to see the color!
03 March 2004, 07:27 AM
Thanks for all the comments guys
Evil Gerbil -> the crocodile skin effect is intentional indeed. I added the scales to make the shape of the frog a bit more visible and easier to understand. It's quite possible though that I will keep it on a lower layer once I start the coloring process - the scales will still be there but they won't be that aggressive.
04 April 2004, 10:33 AM
Il est marrant ton crapeaux génial !!!:buttrock:
04 April 2004, 07:20 AM
As I just mentioned on Kurt Boutilier's thread, I'm torn up as to what to do... as my new concept for the 2d section is also a frog.
Not sure If I should procede or not. It might be back to the drawing board for me.
Anyways... good luck. Can't wait to see more.
04 April 2004, 01:23 PM
It's great, my only crit is that you lost some of the motion/fluidity/looseness from the previous sketch to inks. I guess that's bound to happen as it usually does :hmm: Anyways, great work so far, can't wait to see the colors :buttrock:
04 April 2004, 04:44 PM
your frog has a great attitude :) Very funny
I like even if didn't like the idea first, the result is very surprising
04 April 2004, 06:26 PM
Beautiful and mesmeric sketches; great line work and concept, too :)
My only crits would be:
I would like to see a slightly bigger belly here, and more 'muscular' (chunkier) thigh mechs to stabilise the little beastie :)
04 April 2004, 08:34 PM
your concepts are beautiful. just one thing that is bothering me.. on the last concept the frog looks more like a chameleon (dont know if its spelled correclty..) then a frong hehe.. jus my opinion :D
05 May 2004, 07:16 PM
As usual, thanks for all the comments guys. It's been a while since my last update - I had very little free time to spend working on this one but I've been able to make some progress... it's not much but I just wanted you to see that I'm still in.
As for the frog being similar to a chameleon... well, you're right, it does look a bit like a chameleon. Not much that I can do about it right now though. Besides, I kinda like it's chameleonish looks =)
05 May 2004, 08:26 PM
Chameleon? No, it's more like an elefant. By the way, is it also required by the contest rules, that we must like each and every entry? Personally, I haven't seen a single reply saying "I don't like what you did"; It seems that everybody likes what everybody does...
