these are the two characters, working on a theme of kids playing cowboys and indians. The weapons are mechanical attachments to the characters, whether by bio mechanical glove, or armor(the vest of the indian... The cowboy has an unfair advantage (as usual), but its all in fun... The cowboys weapons are water pistols, with compressed air (the bottles on his back are water and air).
03-20-2004, 09:30 AM
Trying to put them together somehow, i was thinking they are backing towards eachother , oblivious of whats behind them.. this is very rough, the legs are dodgy, and so on...
03-20-2004, 09:56 AM
I see u r a fellow south australian, I like ur idea i think everyone played cowboys and indians a children. Have u seen Wlid Wild West with wil smith, i saw ur idea and thought of the gadgets in that movie kind of High-tech. The cowboy looks cool.... the indians weapon looks maybe a little bulky.
Good luck
03-21-2004, 03:33 AM
ha, south australia's the ONLY place to live. ha
i haven't seen wild wild west, i should hire it if theres references to this sort of thing, cheers..
yeah, i was trying to design a weapon for the indian while keeping the bow and arrow elements in it, i will work on a less bulky weapon, or cheat and make the cowboy at the front and only see the indians good parts.. thatnks for the advice mate.
03-21-2004, 08:12 AM
another concept. a man/teenager, involved in an accident, saved by his now "master"...
"when he saved my life after the accident the master told me there would be no strings attached"
the masters hand puppeteers his "puppet" and further controls him through wires conected(weaving through the chains).
03-21-2004, 08:16 AM
the masters hand.... its basic now, but i will make it more menacing and mechanical. the main cable in the midle of his palm is connected to his "puppets" brain... metal rings connect the chains. peace...
03-22-2004, 02:37 AM
this was a test for colours, seeing if they would clash etc... having difficulty with flesh colour for the face. any tips would be appreciated for that issue!
blocked in background colour merely to get rid of the doodles and text that surrounded it previously... the circle on the floor is where the spotlight lands with the jesters shadow... i was messing around with the rays of the spot light, seeing what it would look like against the character...
03-22-2004, 04:49 PM
Cool Stuff. Fun.
03-22-2004, 05:54 PM
Cool idea :)
Maybe the picture would work better if you see his sadistic master as well, and if he looked more like a human.
The figure looks like a doll, maybe the idea of him being rescued is more clear if he looks like a real human. Just a suggestion :)
03-23-2004, 03:33 AM
ha, yeah im making the fun character of a jester a depressing idea. actually i suppose it depends how you take it.
cheers for the advice jawine, when i add more detail to the face and create a more realistic look, hopefully he will become more "human" looking. i was thinking of eggsagerating some of his features like a charactature... im still working on his master, whether to just show his hand, or show more of him, like you said.
03-23-2004, 08:32 AM
Hey again eupee,
Love this one aswell interesting concept, We are all controlled someway or another..... we are all puppets.
Two suggestion remember the guidelines, Machine into flesh maybe have no clamps have the wiring/cables straight into the skin. The Cables to the legs on a puppet go to the knees.
P.S. South Australia Rulez hehe
03-24-2004, 02:00 AM
If you look at the top left design: and ignore the top right drawing...
This is a concept for the "masters" hand. he will be wearing 4 rings on the four fingers that you see. The chains and wires will be connected to them which are connected to his "puppet". in the middle of his palm comes an RCA type cable (obvioulsy more advanced than that of course), and that leads to the "puppets" brain ( all this is mentioned in previous posts i think). half his hand is mechanical, and the cables lead through this section and back out through the tendon thingies in his arms.
I didn't add the chains etc. to the rings because i was trying work on the mechanical parts of the hand, and they obstructed it. i will change a few things of course before finalising it.
bottom right is how the rings might look with the chains and wires.
03-24-2004, 02:07 AM
This is the jesters (puppets) head. he has a sort of metal half skull cap attached to him,
where cables are connected near his temple region. This skull cap replaces part of his skull
where further electronics are connected to his brain (underneath the metal). He still wears
his hat, which is intertwined with the metal.
03-24-2004, 02:11 AM
I was trying to get composition and proportions right in this drawing, then i took a few minutes with the dodge/burn tool to find a position for the spotlight that would be cast on the character (light is from top left). The masters hand i think will show more (as in the palm) in future...
ANY advice is greatly appreciated, Cheers for the input Element5!!!
03-24-2004, 05:38 AM
That comes along nicly.
I love the concept, because it could be an idea of mine!!!!
Keep on torturing:thumbsup:
03-24-2004, 06:00 AM
Looking good dude
03-25-2004, 02:08 AM
cheers fella's... ive developed the limbs some more, but might not post them yet... ive already posted quite a few concepts...
tommy - ive just recently looked at your work... disturbing indeed! but i love that eggsagerated style (like the mad hatters face). i wanted to work that look into the jesters face, but we'l see.

Do it, do it....!!!!!!!
03-25-2004, 06:12 AM
Crankin out another... how many images can we upload? anyone know?
amyway, here is my design for the limbs and the puppets clothing. Haven't had any practice with material folds before, so gimme a break!
i thinking a more neglected puppet, his master has not maintained him properly, as you can see the cut with wires drooping out in his leg. Might have a broked lute (that banjo that jesters play) on the floor.
03-27-2004, 01:21 AM
my first attempt at lining this sucker in. have'nt payed much attention to line depth etc, and also lined in what was behind the chains accidentally before i drew the chains in! i didn't bother fixing it up in photoshop cos i was too messy. i penciled in some shading, still trying to get a feel of where the spotlight is at (again top left). Still haven't added the lute or sceptre...
also haven't added the additional details, likeripped clothing, and cuts and wires hanging out ther body.
feedback is much welcome.
03-30-2004, 05:54 AM
This is kind of a test colour. And also to show you the basic Spotlight thing i want to do... the shoes, background and much of the finer details aren't done. and i will probably do a better version of it all soon... It takes sooo long with just a mouse!
03-30-2004, 08:10 AM
Damn... u use just a mouse?
Nice colorconcept so far... waqit for more!
03-30-2004, 03:58 PM
thanks tommy. Yeah, unfortunately a drawing tablet is too expensive for me at the moment.. my bro uses one at work, but i cant get to it!!
i reacon the chains will be the most tedius with a mouse.
03-30-2004, 04:33 PM
Hey, I really like how yours is comming along, expecially with a mouse. Its awsome :buttrock: . Can't wait to see your next stage.
03-31-2004, 02:43 PM
cheers grafi, i want to make the face more realistic, life like. change the colours and that..
04-05-2004, 01:05 PM
I like seeing the sketches leading up to the completed work, as long as the topic doesn't get dragged on for ages. I like the detail u put into the sketches simmo, looks mad, shading is good too.. even if it's just to help get a good idea of what you're working towards.
About the chains.. why don't you get a picture of metal, and place it above the layer you have the chains on, and alt-click between them, like we did for that DIESEL picture to get the text to look like brushed steel. Then do some work to it for shadows etc..
04-05-2004, 01:50 PM
It's a good idea, but is it an idea for this machine/flesh contest ? I hope so for you because you have nice coloring stuff here :)
Perhaps it's just me that didn't understand your idea, if so don't listen to me !
04-05-2004, 08:35 PM
i like the more human looking face with the worried expression, what about grunging it up a bit more with textures etc...
04-06-2004, 05:20 AM
thanks for the ideas fellas, or ladies if there are any here.
the_mighty_m: i will grudge up the face, add more detail and dirty it up a bit.. cos im going for the neglected look after the colour tests n so on. Thanks mate.
bonestudio: ha! i may be dodgy at explaining ideas. His limbs are half machine (after the elbow and knees joins). and i will have wires and so on falling out of parts of his body (since some of his insides were damaged and needed fixing after his accident). The master is shown by just his hand. I think i explained it earlier in this thread but i might not have detailed it enough, or explained it with great confusion... if you still don't understand the concept behind this piece, il post up the story behind this human puppet.
crazytobes: yeah, good idea. i forgot about all that stuff we learned at SAE. cheers bro.
Im going to re draw the whole thing and recolour it for the final, because i need to fix up alot of things... like more realistic folds in his clothes, and lots more.... but right now im busy looking for a job, going to centrelink and that...:D
04-06-2004, 08:13 AM
Ok now I understand :)
04-06-2004, 08:29 AM
A young man was involved in an accident. He was on his last breaths when his saviour came to the rescue, seeming helpful and kind. But there was a catch. The young man would have to serve his saviour for all eternity (or how ever long the saviour would maintain him). He is the "Puppet" and his saviour his "Master". The "Master" fixed him up with machined limbs from the elbow to the hands, and the knees to the feet. He Replaced many severed nerves and tissue inside his "puppet" with wires and metal plates. The "Master" held his "Puppet" capture with cuffs and chains, and controlled him through movements of his own hand (which is the only part of the "Master" that you can see to add mystery to the evil saviour) like a marionet. He has further control over his "Puppet" by the cables connected, which also serve to drain the "Puppets" energy and keep him weak, will power depleted and unable to struggle. The main cable connected to the "Puppets" head (connected to a metal Head Piece Which wires into the brain) can be to force expressions of the "puppets" face like laughing, crying, happy, angry etc...
I'll leave the "Masters" purpose of doing such a horrible thing up to you. He could be just a busker, entertaining people with a puppet show, or something more sinister. By the way, The "Master" is also part machine.
Puppet : "when he saved my life after the accident the master told me there would be no strings attached. How naive i was..."
I decided to post the story anyway.
Hope it helps to depict what im trying to draw!
04-14-2004, 06:57 AM
This is my new Line art (in pencil). I decided to draw on a large piece of paper and stitch it up in photoshop so i could add more detail in when i was drawing. This proved kind of unecessary since i am not ading lines in before scanning and also i am going to digitally paint in the chains from scratch. Dont worry about the scan lightness and darkness issues, this is just a template that i will colour over (And try to add lines with a mouse if i want).
04-16-2004, 12:42 PM
Blocked in colours, very simple, very UGLY! My bro called me the primary colours king... they ARE NOT the final colours, just makes it easier to work on seperate elements...
The blue lines are where the chains are going to be. Also i have mucked around with moving the masters hand up higher to give more space between the puppet.
Any comments on composition, etc would be helpful,... its not much to look at at the moment.
I used the polygonal lasso to outline each segment and filled it with a base colour...
there is also alot of space at the bottom which i will fix soon... cheers.
04-16-2004, 01:35 PM
oo , creepy story , brrrr *shivers*
mind starts to think of ideas on how to
free the poor fellow
..I don't think anybody would thing those would be final
..about moving the master's hand up higher ...
what if the master's hand grew from the
puppet's back ? he woulda died you see , and
his dying moments he wouldve secretly attached the
hand to the back. then it would be like a neverending
show with the forearm attached to a table from
the elbow , getting its energy from a windmill nearby that
would act like a wind powerplant.
Wow Does This Story of Mine Have Holes In It or What ??
PS. the "no strings" part of the story , lol ...
04-16-2004, 02:20 PM
hah, yeah i tend to state the obvious sometimes...
cheers for the suggestions Squibbit, very interesting about the hand coming out of his back... that leads to ideas like the master is actually the puppets inner soul, desperately escaping to save HIS Master, instead of the other way round. then becoming greedy and taking over the master role...
I was thinking about attaching the stage to the hand somehow aswel, but i couldnt really think of much...
Cheers man, much appreciated, il look into a few things.
04-20-2004, 08:54 AM
Trying to Define Cloth droops and folds, still more work to be done on it, and the colours are STILL wrong, im going to adjust them and dull them up alot, to suit the mood etc...
04-22-2004, 02:47 AM
Added what you can see, Metal on legs and joins is still very sketchy, need more texture, going to add more colours in to lots, for more contrast n blending. Trying to get a feel of depth.
05-17-2004, 11:59 AM
added a light sourse, and stated creating deeper shadows, lost some detail, but that will change,.. im going for the burnt out look in the centre of some highlights,...
05-17-2004, 12:30 PM
is it just me or have other people lost posts? my second to last update seems to be missing,...
05-18-2004, 03:21 PM
getting some mood, having difficulty with the face. havnt added major shadows from spotlight yet..
im going to put the floor detail in soon, which should add alot.
05-19-2004, 04:09 PM
I like the way you are making the cloth folds. The volume of the character is coming out more. Are you dodging and burning to create the effect or painting darker and lighter colors?
05-21-2004, 09:25 AM
im painting using similar colours with paintbrush and airbrush on low opacity and going over parts to make them darker and lighter... for the shadows i use "multiply" mode in the paintbrush settings and "screen" for the highlights. i dont really use burn and dodge, i used to but i recon you get more freedom with slight colour choices if you use the airbrush/paintbrush.
05-21-2004, 09:35 AM
have more motivation that the past month. Added floor, stil not sure if i like the texture of it yet. added the spotlight "landing" zone (the ring that falls off quicker and lighter on the floor). created the masters hand metal, tried to make it rusty, i dont know if it even looks like metal!
05-25-2004, 12:30 PM
adding some shadows from the spotlight. blocked in the sceptre on the ground. I think i will finally add the chains in before continuing the lighting
05-30-2004, 06:20 AM
good idea there just carry on the good work bye:beer:
05-30-2004, 09:51 PM
I really like your sketch - good concept.
Glad to see the WIP is beginning to have the same feel. The atmosphere is building as you progress.
The only thing I would say, is that the middle finger on the hand looks slightly bent which wasn't the case in the original sketch - Hope you don't mind if I point this out
05-31-2004, 10:32 AM
thank anildawre and MrFreeman.
about hte middle finger, i was trying to mke it so the middle finger was manipulating the chain, by tugging it, if that makes sense, when i add the chains in it may make more sense.. but maybe i went overboard and now it looks a little distorted.. cheers man for the crits...
05-31-2004, 04:19 PM
cool , very funny ~
06-01-2004, 09:37 AM
06-01-2004, 05:37 PM
Interesting idea! A little advice for your hand. You should work with a mirror or pictures of hand to help you get the right perspective and the right shade. I 've been practicing for about 3 years anatomy and continu to use reference. Great help for anybody.
06-02-2004, 09:40 AM
thaqnk for the advice, i used the mirror but i think its now a case of seeing it too much, so it doesn't look that wrong, which sucks, if i had a tablet id change it but its too late for mouse correction, with only little time left, with a job n so on.. il see, thanks though!
06-02-2004, 02:19 PM
added some face details, and cables, and various shadows etc.
06-07-2004, 02:23 PM
did a bit of face painting... and burned out some highlights. need to refine these. the sceptre in the bottom left is made, subtle..
comments?? the highlights look shabby, i need help!
06-09-2004, 04:14 AM
Wow u have come along way with ur idea, Fantastic progress the detail has come up well and ur lighting is great.
Goodluck fellow Adelaidian
06-09-2004, 10:32 AM
im going to wrap it up soon, time is running out. il fix alot of things up...
06-13-2004, 04:30 PM
almost finished, any ideas before i wrap it up?
06-13-2004, 05:40 PM
What about a robot hand above the flesh hand...controling it?
Nahh i think this concept is cool as it is....says it all
06-14-2004, 02:59 AM
ha, i dont think i have time for such a change any how, i might add a little more, dust in the air, but wel see, and maybe something for the curtain where it almost hits the floorboards
06-14-2004, 03:08 AM
superb light effect. Congratulations! man, how it changed ( to better)...
I have see your job, and the final image its very better and impressive than the first sketches... WOW:eek:
FORCE! and ...KEEP IN THIS WAY:applause: :applause:
TEMPLAR project wait for you (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=141195&perpage=15&pagenumber=13)
06-15-2004, 09:04 AM
cheers man, appreciate it.
06-15-2004, 01:48 PM
here it is, had enough of looking at it and wanting to change things. I am happy with the outcome, considering this is my first real digital painting.
It was all done in Photoshop, using a mouse.
I found reference images of chains, puppets, makeup, and so on to assist me with on the internet.
i had fun doing this, and enjoyed looking at all the other works of art and works in progress that people had to offer during this contest, and i am impressed beyond words with some of them!
i would be grateful for any comments and that, cheers.
The piece is called "No Strings Attached"
06-16-2004, 12:51 PM
I had the same intuition once, but in a complete different style.
06-17-2004, 12:48 PM
the same idea? ha, spun out!
a quick question, is it ok to slightly change the final pic (the hi rs .TIFF file that you upload), from the final pic you upload in your thread? cos i just fixed the grainy edges of the spotlight, and something else, hardly noticable
