Hello everyone :)
First of all, good luck to all of you :)
Here's my first concept sketch. I'm planning to do a mechanically enhanced DJ, with (removable) connections from his head directly to beatboxes, effects, synths etc for live performance :)
Added him 2 extra robot arms too, for 3 decks mixing.
Now let's get back to work.. :)
03-19-2004, 01:45 AM
Oh man. I was thinking of doing a mecha DJ. You beat me to it. It looks really cool so far.
03-19-2004, 02:37 AM
Where is that club gonna be? He looks like he lays down some insane beats.
03-19-2004, 02:56 AM
I like the "angle" your using,
Would it not be great to have 4 arms ! ehe..
Good job, man this challenge is going to be fun!
03-19-2004, 03:32 AM
Pretty intence input and output capabilities, I could imagine longer sessions at the raves...lol
I like it.
03-19-2004, 03:51 AM
Snorthul: I'm sorry... :)
Rkhon: Hehehe he is indeed! The question is WHEN is there gonna be such a club? :)
Batmel: Thanks :) I think i'll make it even more dramatic than that.. later..
Element5: ..unless there's a power cut :)
Here's a sketch of the arm.. It has those blinking funky clubby lights, just for the show :)
03-19-2004, 06:09 AM
no problem. I didn't even realize that this was the 2d forum. I'm entering the 3d one so no harm done
03-21-2004, 01:05 AM
Some more mechanical sketches, I rarely draw robotish stuff so I have to practise and experiment..
I think i'll look after some robot reference material to see the actual mechanism of robotic arms, my sketches are only based on suppositions.. and I feel a lot is missing :)
C&C is more than ever welcome :D
03-21-2004, 04:29 AM
good luck :)
03-22-2004, 04:00 PM
I'm thinking about completely changing the subject, doing something more cartoony :) here's a robotized bunny (I still have to add some more mechanical parts), I'm thinking of doing 2 or 3 characters, something like a 'special secret forces squad' from the year 2984 :) let me know what you think :)
03-22-2004, 05:49 PM
Some more concepts...
03-22-2004, 08:22 PM
Just some more concepts, trying to get an idea of what I could do :)
03-22-2004, 08:30 PM
You're blowing everything! :P
Get back to that COOL DJ! :>
03-22-2004, 09:10 PM
I like your style, character is very funny (or bunny, like you want).
Are you a fan of Tex Avery Bugs Bunny, beep beep and coyote...?
Look forward, i want to see more !
03-22-2004, 10:17 PM
bunny with attitude! I like your sketches they've got real character. Nice One!
03-23-2004, 12:54 PM
Logadin: I'm still hesitating between the dj and the toons, they are more fun to do :>
DaVee: Thanks :) No, I'm not a fan, although I like them :)
Zilla: Thanks :D
03-23-2004, 01:08 PM
the big bear's cool....
could do with some more 'machine' possibly? Although it looks like his hidden arm is machined-up...?
03-23-2004, 04:19 PM
when I saw your dj sketch I thaught that thats a cool idea and wished if you were to go ahead with it that you draw it as looking through a mad fisheye lens, you know all extra distorted. Then I came back and saw your robotized bunny, and I must say I like him more. I looking forward to seeing more of him! (love the bear too! perhaps you can do a squad or something .:bounce:
03-25-2004, 03:24 PM
Really refreshing style... I'll keep an eye on your progress!!!
03-30-2004, 11:47 PM
thanks for your comments :)
duddlebug: I agree, they need more mechanical parts.. I tried experimenting more the characters, pose and proportions before adding all the mech stuff :)
crazybread: I'm experimenting the fisheye, but it doesn't come up right.. I've not yet decided with which concept to go on, but I still have plenty of time :)
Franky_mo: thanks :)
Here is another bunny concept:
03-31-2004, 05:26 AM
Damn.. I can't believe I didn't comment on this!!!
Great concepts and unique style u have going on here. I wait with what u'll end up.
No crits yet:thumbsup:
03-31-2004, 11:02 AM
It is so nice to see your work cause it is so different from the norm, exellent style.
03-31-2004, 04:31 PM
Like the cartoon style stuff. Nice and differant.
Love the bunny! maybe only have the one leg robotic (lucky rabit foot and all)
Well it looks cool
03-31-2004, 07:32 PM
I think getting the character right is important. Especially on this challenge. It'd be easy to get bogged down in mechanical detail and not develop the character(s) fully. Detail and the nitty-gritty of the mechanics can come later.
And as you've said....we've got plenty of time!! for now!!
And it's great that you've continued with the cartoon style...
04-02-2004, 12:42 AM
Tommy Lee, dloots, SigFire: Thanks :) Stay tuned!
duddlebug: That's right :) And I prefer goin on with characters which are fun to paint.. To be honest, painting all the knobs and stuff of the DJ would have made me sick :)
I'm now working on the composition.. Trying to figure out how and where to put the big bear (I'm thinking about switching the bear with a panda).
04-02-2004, 05:33 AM
merci d'avoir jeté un coup d euile sur mes travaux, super ton dj "défoul toi man"
04-04-2004, 11:34 PM
wilfrid: y'a pas de quoi :)
here's the composition i'm planning to go on with :) I'll start the lineart tomorrow, if you have any suggestion or if there's something to change, I'd be glad to hear it! :) thanks :)
04-05-2004, 09:13 AM
Very dynamic compo !
Very funny style :)
It could be a good start for a jack&daxter like videogame, I think
04-05-2004, 02:26 PM
you must have been sitting in a cup of soul, you got some nice shapes here, no crit just waiting to see the outcome, keep it greazy..
04-05-2004, 08:27 PM
i like your bunny alot, cant think of anything wrong with it, its perfect, it is a cooler idea than the dj as well...
04-05-2004, 11:16 PM
Thanks for your comments :)
I started fine tuning the sketch, to get a better idea of the details before really starting the lineart.. here's how the cat should look like :)
04-06-2004, 09:53 PM
same thing as above but with the bunny :)
04-07-2004, 06:12 AM
hahaha.. 5 starts cartoon style!
04-08-2004, 01:45 PM
Russo: thanks :D
I think I finished the first step of the lineart, now I gotta go hi-res, and carefully trace the final lineart :)
04-08-2004, 02:21 PM
smooth , clean , neat stuff
04-08-2004, 04:46 PM
Nice lineart, you kept the great attitudes you had in the sketches ! Great step to start a good coloring
04-11-2004, 12:37 AM
Nice Work I really like the way you trace your lines.
04-11-2004, 12:58 AM
hey drumwhore, looking good.........
04-11-2004, 06:05 PM
very cool :buttrock:
i like all your cartoon design
04-14-2004, 10:28 PM
thanks for the comments :D I appreciate :)
just finished the lineart of the cat.. 2 more characters to go :)
04-15-2004, 04:44 AM
Hey i really like your style.
What do you use for the outline?
04-15-2004, 03:08 PM
90% of the lineart was made with a default hard brush, and 10% vectorial for the larger areas like the stomach, feet, tail, it's easier to keep the stroke regular... :)
04-16-2004, 07:07 PM
I love the cartoon style! all the characters are cool :applause:
What have you thought about the background? :D
04-16-2004, 11:43 PM
I like the posing its very Charlies Angels....:)
When pets go wild and kick ass.....
looking forward to colour.
04-19-2004, 12:39 PM
Ok i'm finally done with the bunny.. One more to go..
04-19-2004, 12:44 PM
element5: thanks :D
adrixwha: thank you :) I did not think about the background yet, maybe i'll do something simple, or maybe something like an apocalyptical city environment.. Anyway thanks for reminding me about the bg, I should think about it before starting coloring, especially for the lighting..
04-19-2004, 05:53 PM
You're one of my top3 ( or 4 :p ).
Your characters are great.
If I may give you my opinion , a background would be good (and great lightning).
Most of your other challenge's camarade will have strong atmospheres in their images.
And having just the characters , even if they have strong personnality, seems like "empty" or "light" to me , if no environment.
I don't want to be rude.
(I 'm not even in the competition !)
Just my opinion.
So if you want to compete...
:wip: to reach the top !
04-20-2004, 01:20 AM
Love it man. Your lineart is so smooth. Are you using a digital program to "ink" the drawing or are you going traditional?
Anyway I think these characters are awesome. Can't wait to see it with colour and a background.
04-20-2004, 02:11 AM
Great job until now!!! Keep up!
04-20-2004, 07:36 AM
Reminds me of JazzJackRabbit.
04-21-2004, 11:14 PM
I did some modifications to the panda, I didn't like how the old one integrated in the pic.. his shoulders were too large, and he looked too symmetrical.. he contrasted with the 2 other characters. let me know what you think about this one :)
04-21-2004, 11:46 PM
is.it.living: Thanks :D I completely agree with you, even if the background is not required, I think it will definately play a role in the mood (especially the lighting), and the rendering will also look better than a normal lighting.. I just have to find some ideas :)
cuppacam: Thanks! I'm using photoshop for the inking. Default hard brush and eraser, and lots of CTRL-Z :D
BloodTaster & MorteR: Thank you guys for your support :)
04-25-2004, 01:56 AM
disturbing but cute. R you planning on painting realistically or cartoonish too?
04-27-2004, 07:02 PM
Diggin the bunny:thumbsup:
05-02-2004, 02:25 PM
Its cool to see something comic, and different from the realistic that so many other artists have adopted. U've suceeded in giving personality to u're characters. Keep it up.
06-11-2004, 03:04 PM
I just realized that there is smething like 1 week left for the challenge :) Haven't updated this thread for a while, but I'm still planning to finish this illustartion before deadline. Maybe I'll get rid of the panda.. :)
c&c welcome :)
06-11-2004, 03:12 PM
Wow!!! I like your style!!
Goodluck with the rest of the image. :buttrock:

06-12-2004, 09:10 AM
Very good coloring ! And the posture of the animal is very cool, like some sort of super hero or secret agent. Great ! :buttrock:
06-12-2004, 09:23 AM
 Looking good...Really great characters and linework...
looking forward to seeing all the elements combined and in colour.
good Luck and keep posting those WIPs:applause: :)
06-14-2004, 11:52 AM

06-15-2004, 10:33 AM
i love your style man. so bold and standout
06-15-2004, 12:10 PM
I like the cat... and obviously I like the rabbit! :bounce:
06-15-2004, 02:56 PM
just a little update..
06-15-2004, 08:15 PM
OK, i'm starting to see the end now.. here is the scene I'm planning to go on with. Just some more details to paint on the characters, the background, and fine tuning some colors and it's gonna be done!
06-15-2004, 10:58 PM
Thats some naughty little fellas :))
Would be nice to see them in action in a comic strip....
06-16-2004, 01:43 AM
I'm sorry that I missed this thread earlier. Looking really good.
06-16-2004, 07:00 AM
I like your drawing, Your two characters are well done.
May be rabbit shadow could be change, i think, or it's my eyes, the perspective's not right around left foot.
Is your superPets are decided to do justice in "pets world". :) ;) :) ?
Very good pets. :bounce:
06-16-2004, 07:16 AM
This is great! Reminds me of those old Bloom COunty books with the cartoony drawing and realistic shaded painting for the color.
What happened to the Panda though? He was my fave of the three! Did he get scrapped cuz of time?
06-16-2004, 12:31 PM
For the cartoon ones, my favourite.
06-16-2004, 01:49 PM
Thank you all for your kind comments :)
Sorry about the panda, but I didn't have time to redo it completely.. I wasn't happy with his look, next to these 2 other guys :)
Well, if anybody has suggestions for the background, it would be nice to share them with me.. I'll start detailing it tonight, and I hope to upload the final pic tomorrow evening..
06-16-2004, 04:03 PM
This rocks! Great job on the character designs.
06-16-2004, 09:09 PM
Really cool and funny characters. I love the concept! Very nice
06-16-2004, 09:46 PM
Congratulations!!! Simply excellent!! I like your style and the well balanced weights combined with clear colors and line art!
06-16-2004, 11:04 PM
I finished painting the clouds.. now let's start the buildings!
06-16-2004, 11:18 PM
Mmm, peachy cream clouds, soft and fluffy.
Hope you keep the hazy look to the buildings.
06-16-2004, 11:39 PM
Love the style.........plenty of attitude....great form!
06-17-2004, 04:26 AM
06-17-2004, 04:36 PM
Thanks for the comments! :)
I'm not really satisfied with how the buildings turned out, so suggestions of alternatives would be helpful..
I was thinking about working more on their design, but I don't have time enough, and according to the rules of the contest, the background is optional anyway.. So i prefer not spending too long on it, but having something decent..
06-17-2004, 05:35 PM
I'm diggin' the the cloudy smoke...I really like the scenic look....you could blur out the background heavily to give the appearance of a city in the background or drop in some flat color design shapes behind the characters.:bounce:
06-17-2004, 09:36 PM
You dont need to change a thing its looking awesome.
This has really come along way.
Right from the begining it had loads of promise and I thought it was really cool then.
Well its lived up to its promise and kicks ass.
06-17-2004, 09:46 PM
Snotblow: yes, but then it will ruin the fluffy clouds which took ages to paint :)
Sigfire: Thanks :) But I just finished the new background.. Did you prefer the old one?
Anyway, some more tweaking and then final image will be upped..
06-17-2004, 09:49 PM
Forgot to enable the layer with the fog on prevous submission..
06-18-2004, 12:04 AM
Decided not to wait till last minute for uploading all this, so here i go..
06-18-2004, 12:06 AM
Thanks again for your support and good luck to all of you! :)
06-18-2004, 11:35 AM
I like the addition of the dome shape buildings, makes it more other worldly and the silhouette appearance suites your style.
06-18-2004, 12:13 PM
Very funny work!:applause:
Wish you luck!:wavey:
