03-20-2004, 06:48 AM (

Like every entrant here's my wip.

This is not my final entry yet, just throwing this in to comply the requirement and see everybody's comment.

Thanks for now.

03-20-2004, 07:10 AM
I know what you mean about the first image, dude. I have gotten quite a long way into some of the details of my first image and I don't think I'll pursue it as a final entry. In fact, I feel so strongly that I won't wind up using it, I'm not sure I'll even post it as a WIP but oh well.

I hope that you, myself, and others with this same mentality don't let it get like a poker game or an e-bay auction in that we hold off until the last second to show our hand (poker), run up the bids (poker or e-bay), and thereby ruin the whole point of this forum's rules for the contest though.

So I'm going to go ahead and comment on this image you've posted though. That way you might get some ideas for what to do next based on what you've done here.

The use of a dog is great! I am a lot like the other people who have posted so far in that my first thoughts were humanoid cyborg in nature. Although the novelty of using a dog is pretty strong, the PURPOSE of giving a quadreped 4 replacement legs is unclear. Dogs are pretty efficient as a design just naturally. Maybe turn up the contrast a bit. For example, giving faster legs to a basset hound, taller legs to a Dachsund. Or you could go the redundancy round and give REALLY fast legs to a greyhound, bigger teeth to a rotweiler, etc...

03-20-2004, 07:42 AM
Ok, here's my inital reaction:

Ok, here's my more professional review:

Great quality previsualization. The use of a very common household pet brings forth a lot of hidden meaning. I'm interrested on how you will devolop your composition for this piece.

Keep the slightly cocked head, it gives that almost an innocence to the character. If I remember correctly, however, the implants should be very appearant for what they are used for... even with that said, I wouldn't change much.

03-20-2004, 07:43 AM
:buttrock: like this by itself a lot. though the legs seem more hindrance compared to a real dogs legs. the crab legs though coll loking arent ann addon. only in my opinion though:) good sketch work.

03-20-2004, 09:46 AM
I think this is really good, one of my favourite entries so far. I like the way you've not just put a robot dog leg in place of the real legs, the spider type design works really well. Not sure if I agree with keeping him looking innocent though, if he were an upgraded guard dog they would have upgraded his aggression as well as his legs and eyes?

03-20-2004, 02:46 PM
Thats a sweet concept, the tilt o the head is nice...try to capture a nuance these dogs have, a very subtle detail/s expressing a specific moment or emotion, keep up the good work!

03-20-2004, 04:04 PM
WOOW! This just really very rocks! :buttrock: As I can see in your concept you're a good 2D artist, so the final image will be stunning :) :bounce:

03-20-2004, 04:43 PM
I am starting to feel that the concept of spider-like legs, organic and robotic alike, has been overused.

It would be really great if you can come up with a design that we have rarely or never seen before.

I've got a funny thought here: if the dog's got springs attached to where its four legs used to be, it'll be one cute, bouncy and excitable 'puppy'! I'm thinking Odie here... :)

03-20-2004, 08:19 PM

Awesome design sketch, i'm surprise by the fine head, the sweet expression by your dog, and the good perspective in spider legs.
You have a very good technical drawing.

03-20-2004, 09:14 PM
good solid drawing! brilliant idea. you got there first.
I f part of it is titanium I would like to see more of the vulnrable areas( neck) covered.

03-21-2004, 03:14 PM
Great Work!

03-22-2004, 02:15 PM (

Again, here is the initial detailed version of my concept. I have this thought of pushing this as my final entry.

But before i disappear again, i would like to share a little backgrounder about my concept. That dog is my pet, and "BSODWarrior" was right there, "he" indeed a common household pet, I felt overwhelmed by "BSODWarrior" comment. I proved to myself that manage to deliver my message across without discussing it.

The idea i'm presenting here is somewhat an upgraded version of my dog's character. So, having an extreme bizarre features does not perfectly fit, showing some upgraded aggression maybe, but not in this piece.

Thank you guys for all your comments posted, it really helps me solidify my concept.

God Bless.

03-22-2004, 02:26 PM
hmm.. very nice drawing.. but the design itself, I don't really understand. I've seen similar kind of mechanical legs here .. seems to be popular.. but to me they don't look very practical.

who would build such legs that are pointy like that on the end? on soft surface, you would sink, and on hard surface, you would slip all the time..

they do look kind of cool tho.. :)

Friedric P
03-22-2004, 03:53 PM
I like this concept! Very funny and well executed.

I've read that it doesn't look very pratical. Maybe this dog should be more upgraded, in a way of walking on walls and ceiling?

Good luck! :)

03-22-2004, 04:48 PM
Nice work. I like your pencil technique.

03-22-2004, 05:46 PM
Firstly your drawing skills are very relaistic and very kool.

Secondly I agree with Friedric P about the design aspects of the deisgn being more towards crawling up walls and ceilings, but I also think that it could possibly be somesort of a spydog.
I say this because in your design the dog has a mechanical eye, which could instead be a live spy cam.

And finally, good luck with the design, I'll be watchin your work furhter...

03-23-2004, 12:46 AM
Wow!!! Guard Dog crawling on walls and ceiling.... Dang!!! that's a brilliant idea. I will take that into consideration...seriously. And i find it more practical than a human body with an egg beater head.

To Friedric P and Garyriley31, thank you for such brilliant and practical suggestions.

My best wishes to you guys.

03-23-2004, 01:12 AM
The execution is good, but I don't see the practicality of mechanical legs. Guard dogs spend about 90% of their time pacing around, its not like they get especially tired, unlike say a race dog - so taking away fatigue with mechanical legs seems to be a redundant addition imo.

Also as mentiond before, why are the legs splayed like that? Played legs, such as that on the spider exist for a reason, its to give good base and equally good mobility in multiple directions. This works well for them because they have multiple view points and their panoramic view is much greater than that of bi-focal creatures - they don't need to turn their heads sideways to move sideways.

The dog on the other hand would not be very efficient at using this configuration of legs, their regular legs are made to travel in one direction for a reason, giving them increased movment options (such as strafing) would be useless because genetically, dogs don't move like that, so its a wasted feature.

Okey...okey...i'm really buying those ideas thrown in recently.

Please allow me to present to you guys my "Guard Dog V2".

Magic Man i admire your opinion.

Thanks for now.

03-24-2004, 01:45 PM
Hey I really like this design!

I feel its got a very dramatic feel to it due to the composition. In this design its much more evident as to what its design purpose is.

I'm lookin forward to your further work and I would recommend this design idea for your final image, but thats just my opinion.

03-24-2004, 06:40 PM
ok. now the legs are starting to make sense.. great.

Tommy Lee
03-25-2004, 05:48 AM

Love everything about it... specially the angle!!!!

this dog tried to act like a donkey? it kinda give me a sense of dat. maybe its sleepy eyes? Or the huge ears?? I am confused. Actually i hate dogs so much. haha..

One day, i was walking on the street, & stopped by for my friend. I felt something stepped on my shoes. I looked down . It's a dog put its foot on my shoes!... Haha, everybody can imagine how dirty my shoes is...

heyman,Guard Dog V2 will be a masterpiece!. i like dat one!

04-06-2004, 08:22 AM
Very well rendered ! I hope to never meet such dogs :)

04-23-2004, 06:51 AM (

It's quite along time that i haven't post an update of my entry. Been out of the radar lately. :)))

I seen two "Dog" related concept that thrown in. :(
So, i decided to create another concept, i come up with an organic creature and named it "SAPAT".

Again, i like to hear everybody's comment.

04-24-2004, 10:20 AM (

Here's my follow up sketch of my entry. I placed a bit tighter outline on the spinal and on the rib cage.

I'm planning to put my creature a "Root" like skin/texture... We'll see what will happen next.:)))

04-24-2004, 03:10 PM
congrats with your very nice rendered drawings, just the way I like them: sketchy but straight ahead and lots of detail.......reminds me of other great artists I know....
I like your concept as well, altough I find you should think about the functionalities a little bit more. who am I to judge you?
looking forward to see some coloured drawings.....

good luck

04-27-2004, 12:06 PM (

Okey... Here is my test sketch for my "skin/Texture" the Rib and Spinal a detail.

Hope to hear a C&C from everybody.

04-27-2004, 01:41 PM
oh u have a new concept , this one is really cool , i like the muscle and flesh details , this lineart is starting well !

04-27-2004, 02:03 PM
oh yes !

again a killer in 2d !
it's great !

04-27-2004, 02:23 PM
hum hum..... well .....heuuuu
argh i m dying !! if i m a killer, you re my lord !!!!
keep the sketchs coming !!!
they rule !!!!!! (got any tut to do such sketch ??? )

04-28-2004, 01:53 AM (

Second Phase of my line art:

Time to show my creature's limb... I created a human like upper leg and laying a same skin/texture, so that it will jive with the upper body.

I'm pinning my idea of the lower leg, an ostrich leg and a monkey feet with a toe/claw of a cat. The detailed drawing of which is next.

04-28-2004, 03:10 AM
very nice rendering:thumbsup:

04-28-2004, 09:06 AM
Oh I liked your dog... Well that's your choice. I think personnally that there is a problem between the realistic musclesand machinery, and the cartoony face, It's kind of disturbing for me...

04-28-2004, 09:18 AM
Good work! I like the second idea better, and nice rendering the muscle part! I love that a lot!! (however, I think you have the ability to create something more impressive than that! DEFINITELY!!) Well, I guess u and me are both in the middle of the development... :p Therefore, I am also gonna say it to myself as well, "I can do better!!" Haha!! And I will be glad that u can give me some words as well! Once again, good job!!

04-28-2004, 03:05 PM
i really like the skin texture..... great rendering man~~~.... so it is another guard creature?

SAPAT!!!! climbing on tree branches?

04-29-2004, 12:39 PM
Bonestudio - Thank you for your honest opinion... I have same feeling of the head as well...Surely i'm gonna change the head. ;)

Masahiro - ..."I guess u and me are both in the middle of the development... Therefore, I am also gonna say it to myself as well, "I can do better!!"...

"I can do better!!"...and we share the same prayer.

To Viag,Xia,Nov@ and Moa[f2d] thank you also and Godspeed.

05-04-2004, 11:53 AM
Hi cabertevon,
Wow your concept is really cool. I like the details you have given
to your character. You are really a talented artist.
I am waiting for your next great update.
keep the good work going:thumbsup:

05-04-2004, 05:14 PM (

Third Phase of my line art:

Detail sketch of the lower leg.:)))

05-04-2004, 05:23 PM (

Here's the finish leg and tail....

05-04-2004, 05:29 PM
Hey.... Thank you very much.

05-04-2004, 06:38 PM
These are looking good... i much prefer these to the original dog idea.

There's some lovely detail and shading in theses images... i'll be interested to see how they translate into colour. Do you plan on working over these drawings? Or will you start afresh on the colour versions?

05-05-2004, 01:00 PM (

Okey.... Here it is... i'm changing the head.

What you guys think?

05-15-2004, 02:35 PM (

Test color...I'm thinking to stay away from Blue,Gray,Green Palette for awhile. Wraith is right...Stylized... bright... earth colors is perfect.

05-16-2004, 02:33 AM (

Added some weight to the color, shadow specially. Laying some lights/fx, a sort of sun beam that wraps the creature's body.:)

05-16-2004, 02:45 AM

My 2 posted line art which include my final work for Line Art milestone category are missing. Also, 2 pages of my thread are missing as well and my posting count dropped to 29.

Can anyone help me figuring this out?

I already sent a mail to the moderator.

Thanks Guys...

My letter to the moderator bounced back...

My Final Line Art image is missing... I hope this is not a ground for disqualification.

I visited the thread of BloodTaster. I found out that CGTalk was attacked by hackers.

Some posts that made ten days ago, are pressumed gone.

Sad to say, i'm one of the victim.

Let's pray that they won't strike back on the remaining days of the contest.

05-18-2004, 02:01 PM (

Definitely i'm going for the earth color.

05-18-2004, 05:12 PM
this is Definitely a great job, nice colour scheme, wanna see the rest, keep it up solid work.

here's mine, tell me what you think:

05-18-2004, 09:04 PM
Awesome creature design! Great style too! I'm heading over to your website now to check out more of your work... keep it up!

Good luck in the contest... I don't know how they're gonna choose a winner from all the mind-blowing artwork presented here!

05-20-2004, 11:56 AM (

Hi!!! Everyone... Here's another update of my piece...I Enhanced the shadow, color and put some lights.

C&c Please...

05-21-2004, 02:14 AM
Awesome concpets bud, love ya work, just wanted to give some quick feedback, the colour looks great the creature is almost chameleon like in how it seems to belnd in with the tree if thats what youre aiming for, even still though i would try adding a little highlight to the head area as you seem to loose some of the nice details of the creature. Its just that it looks a little dark, those initail line drawings had some nice looking features and you seem to have lost them a little. Dont know, it was just a thought. In any case i love your work, youve got a great ability for the creature design side of things.

Keep it up, cant wait to see what you do next.:D

05-22-2004, 12:48 PM (

Okey... Here's another update. :)
Background color...soon.

05-24-2004, 12:59 PM (

Okay… Time to paint the background scene…:)

05-25-2004, 05:39 PM
Background scene is pretty convincing. Good start :)
But wont the shaded pencil work be in conflict with your new background?

You have reached that stage where i have no idea what i should be doing for the pic. I know you can make it even better! Update us soon.

Oh almost forgot to tell you how awe struck i was when i saw your dog sketch with that superb angle!:bounce:

05-26-2004, 12:56 PM (

Another update for my background... I'm adding l'l details on this, i'll have it blur anyway, to create a more depth.

artjunkie - Thanks for the kind words. :)

grafik - Good luck also to you, mate.

sketchfiend - I really appreciate and consider your feedback.

Falcor_ Thank you for seeing my quick sketch as a good start.

05-26-2004, 02:28 PM
yeah yeah the creature is nice it is so movable, the background alittle blur would be fine and it is almost done

05-28-2004, 10:05 AM (

Another update of my background scene.

05-28-2004, 10:44 AM
 Wow, the works come on a long way since I last looked.

Really like how you are working up the background - I'll be interested to see how all the elements look once combined. The differences between background and foreground in terms of light and style should add a lot of depth...:)

05-28-2004, 11:08 AM
Hi cabertevon,

I like your drawing associate to the BG you posted will look very good.
It's difficult, just my opinion, to differenciate the organic part to engins parts at the firt sight.

Final will surely be awesome.

05-29-2004, 11:03 AM (

Hi!!! Another update... nothing so significant to mention, just a l'l details.:)

Mr. Freeman and Davee -Thanks.

05-29-2004, 02:40 PM
lookin cool though.'!

well cabertvon this backgorund will fit da creature very good i think. Also due to ur wish u could make the background darker or lighter but i 'm imaginin' this scene like because of the close up view of the creature the creature is darker than the background and also the ligh comin down from a gap between the leaves makes the background llighter and smooth.. but not detailed.. i think thatz what u r about to do. keep it up man!

06-01-2004, 11:42 AM (

My Final Coloring wip.

More details will be added soon.

06-01-2004, 11:58 AM (

Oppps...I click the wrong file.

Sorry...Here it is.

06-01-2004, 01:13 PM
I love the final composition with the background. The mood you have created is very nice, and the design of your Machine Flesh entry is very well executed.

GOod work!

06-01-2004, 01:39 PM
that really has turned out pretty cool, I very much like that texture you've got running through it :applause:

06-01-2004, 06:40 PM
OO yeahh..
I see you prefer absolutely natural technics.Your project with hibrid of dog and machine impresed me really much .Both composition and way of drawing.

06-01-2004, 07:10 PM
Your work is awesome!!!

You wrote: "More details will be added soon", so, I'll be waiting :bounce:

06-01-2004, 10:09 PM
Very good wip ! The BG brings a great dimension...THat's give a reality to the creature. :applause: and a very beautiful dimension in the composition.
keep up !(as we always say:D ..)

06-01-2004, 10:59 PM
yeah the sapat is really blended good with the BG. may be thorugh the end of the tail could be darker i dunno u might try it or a metal shine look on the end of the tail could express the effect of it but it would take the attention to the end of the tail rather than the creature itself so this won'T be good...indeed its a very succesfull drawin and concept. congrats, hope i could manage to finish mine too..
take care pal.

06-05-2004, 07:46 AM
Its a great creature! But for my opinion, the colors r to equal, soft and the whole machineflesh thing doesnt show up. Some more contrast maybe?
Otherwise is a great piece!

06-05-2004, 11:39 AM (

Another update!!!

06-05-2004, 03:43 PM
Woo...It's becoming very very nice !! Your work on contrast is very important in this great piece ...
I like it !

Keep going my friend !:applause:

06-05-2004, 06:07 PM
WOOOOOOW !!!! I'm very sorry not to have seen your post early, it's really nice ! I love the vertebraes and the view which is like a photo. Impressive
I really liked your first concepts with the dog upside down. It was very strange but perfectly drawn :bounce: :bounce:

06-05-2004, 07:46 PM
Beautiful. just beautiful.

06-06-2004, 02:11 AM
NinjaASSN, E.T., Neandertal and goli...Thank you very much. It was such a pleasure to know that you drop by guys.

06-06-2004, 03:05 AM
The new background elements youve added in a great, really good use of the background focus blurr, gives your image some great depth. I was wondering whether the tree that your creature sits on would look good if it had some deep scratched goughe marks in the bark from the creatures mechanical claws. Atm moment its maybe a little too perfect...just a suggestion:D

But i absolutely love what youve done, looks great.

06-06-2004, 09:40 AM
sketchfiend - Thank you

06-07-2004, 10:07 AM
Wow, it's a very good work. Beatiful! Awsome! I like it!:buttrock:

06-08-2004, 11:03 AM
You are simply a phenomenon

I LOOOOOVVE your style from sketching to coloring

Tell me do you use PAINTER or an othersoftware for your digital paintings ?

I would love so much to reach your level.

:applause: :bounce:

06-08-2004, 01:41 PM
Taiji, Newone...Thanks
Taiji - I use PS7

Again thank you for the kind and very inspiring words guys.

06-08-2004, 03:44 PM
wonderful renderin'.. smooth colorin over great pencil work. congrats pal.!:applause:

06-08-2004, 05:49 PM
Nice work! I remember seeing your original concept of the dog with mechanical legs a couple of months ago. It's fantastic how far you have come. I've just entered myself, and i'm hoping to reach this polished level.

I'll be watching your finishing touched closely.

Good work....good luck

06-08-2004, 11:16 PM
GeeNoc - Thanks again buddy.

Paul - Been to your thread...your work is freakin cool.

06-10-2004, 01:33 PM
beautiful. it gets better and better. It's nice to see non-human themes! I like the subtle manner with which the machinery blends into the flesh - I think if there were anything to nitpick on it would be that maybe there's a little too much white going on in the background/highlights. Other than that it's great.

Thanks for the comment btw!

06-10-2004, 05:03 PM (

Another update...

06-10-2004, 05:34 PM
I don't know why I haven't seen this piece earlier, it looks awesome! You really have a great quality of light going on. No real big crits really. Maybe the head and try could be of slightly different hue/value from each other? They kind of blend together, although that may be intentional if it's supposed to be camoflauged....

06-10-2004, 06:42 PM
As usual it's agreat work ! I haven't real crit ...I agree with Evil Gerbil about the head...values on the head are very closed from the tree...may i suggest ? May be a soft light behind the bottom of the head could help..softly, just to lightly detach the side of the shape...idem between shoulder and the could, always as a suggest, add a soft shadow to the base of the queue, that could detach leg...:)

Anyway, you know what to do!!!!

It's a really good work, work on lighting is impressive, feeling of deep forest is nice...

I wish you the best.

06-11-2004, 08:31 AM
Awesome! I can imagine a movie with this monster! No crit!

06-15-2004, 11:55 AM (

Been busy lately... wow, theres' a lot of awesome works popping up lately.
Theres' only three days left to do our thing... Lets pump it up guys.

So, here is my share, my final work, this is my best shot for now.

Again, this is the best competition there is.

Good luck to everyone.

06-15-2004, 01:51 PM
awesome concept man....realy love it....I like that 3d hdri feeling you have here...looks good

06-15-2004, 01:52 PM
Waoow ! Lighting is amazing now !
I like your work !!
It's living!

Congratulations man ...
Great work !

Good luck for the judging !

06-16-2004, 05:20 AM
I'm glad you worked a little bit in pulling his shape away from the tree. Really made him stand out better. I also like your subject matter, not human. :)

06-16-2004, 05:47 AM
Congrats dude... really appreciated seeing your mind at work... the final image looks great...:D

06-16-2004, 11:08 AM (

Just one more tweak on the background before i upload my final work tomorrow.

Again... Best wishes to everyone.

06-16-2004, 12:09 PM
Thank you everybody for such inspiring words.

Kind regards.

06-16-2004, 12:31 PM
Man what can I say, I really loved it from the first day that I saw it.
Excellent stuff. The mechanical spinal cord looks so damn real.

Great concept and great rendering abilities.

06-16-2004, 01:19 PM
Wow, you´re such a lucky guy. You´re almost finished.

Really great tones and colors.

Good luck!!

06-16-2004, 01:33 PM
WOW this is awesome! I want one!

06-16-2004, 01:57 PM (

Another one more tweak.

This time, its final :)...Hope so!!!

Caberte thanks for your input. I want to congratulate you for your piece. I enjoyed watching its evolution, and now with all the after effects looks really good and I would ask if possible to mail me a wallpaper sized snap. I would like to add it to my collection of best images on my personal expose. You did great. Hope to hear more from you.

 I replied to this but as server is busy, am doing so again, so sorry if this is the second post......

Always new this would be one of the best.....really great attention to detail, but doesn't look overworked. I also love the fact that the machine parts look organic rather than polished chrome

Great style, great entry...good luck in the voting...
