Mates Laurentiu has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.

Story: "I was only 16 when the car hit me. I was in a coma for two weeks and, when I wake up, I was paralized from neck down. For a while I wished I was dead and I though there can't be anything worst than this. But I was wrong. A year after the accident they told me my leg had developed blood clots on the femural artery. Something went terible wrong and they had to cut off the leg. I though I couldn't be more miserably. I was wrong again. After another year my hand developed a similar problem and I though I was gonna be cut to pieces slowly, year after year. But they offered me a chance: to become a cyborg. I accepted; I lost part of my hand and got me some fancy prostesys and electronic nerve implants in my spine.
It took me another year until I learned to walk again. And another year to build up the courage to look in the mirror. It was not so bad! Weird, yes, but I looked like some sort of comix heroine. And I liked it!".

03 March 2004, 10:37 PM (

What I've done so far, step by step.

03 March 2004, 10:39 PM (

Step two...

03 March 2004, 10:41 PM (

And my last step for now.

03 March 2004, 12:32 AM

Love the idea and the story, This is looking fantastic so far.
will enjoy watching this one develope.

03 March 2004, 01:02 AM
This is just one day work, I may change some pieces as I go along. Thanks for the kind comment.

03 March 2004, 09:24 AM
Beautiful stuff.

03 March 2004, 09:38 AM
Howz it going dude,

love looking at this piece....:)
I have noticed one thing where her hip meets the fake leg in the mirror it is high up and in the forground its low. Just an obsivation hope u dont mind.

03 March 2004, 11:30 PM
Glad you like it guys. element5, you are right, that will be corected.

03 March 2004, 08:56 AM
very nice job,, its amazin how all that is done wit brushes.

03 March 2004, 03:29 PM
Hey this is Luba! Hi Luba !:wip:

03 March 2004, 09:09 PM
thumbs up? cudos to your approach (use of the mirror) and shading work looks great so far.

03 March 2004, 10:58 PM (

Just finished the reflection. I've corected the posture and added shading and illumination...

03 March 2004, 11:03 PM (

Details worked on the face and hair, prostesis finished and illumination rework in small areas around the nerve implants. Next, mirror itself.

03 March 2004, 11:16 PM
hypertoxic, its just the miracle of the digital brushes! I have buy myself a small wacom (A5) just a couple of weeks ago and I've decided this could be my chance to win a bigger one :D. Well, its all just fuzzy brushes and smudge. Illumination its done with the sponge tool and shading with multiply set on diferent levels of opacity.
SILMAETH, who is Luba? If she's looking like this, wow!

03 March 2004, 12:14 AM
Stunning piece =] The only thing IŽld like to change is the left breast in the mirror, It seems kinda off compered to the rest of the painting perhaps a bit more reflection of the light or maby even out the darker color between them. Cuz it seems like the left breast starts about an inch higher up then the right one. When it acually should start a bit lower if u look at how her shoulders r angled.

oh and one more thing, the backside of the left knee I think should be turned a bit to the right =) now itŽs seems kinda bent in a unatural way.

Anyway this r just my opinoins and I hope youŽll find them useful =]]

Wow I'm surprised that you don't guess who is she...
Luba is a model posing for Peter Hegre that appear in the following picture:
:nudity warning: (

Obviously it's the same you used for the layout of your scene.

Anyway, you're doing a good painting job.
Crits: I think she's looking like a junkie girl, she seems to be sick, try to decrease the shadows under her eyes
Also, you should check the perspective of the mirror furniture, according to the reflection it's fasle

03 March 2004, 11:57 PM
Algfader, Thanks for the crits, good crits I might say. I'll correct the problems in my next step.
Yes SILMAETH, that's my reference! I didn't knew her name is Luba and I didn't have such a good reference. I used a small resolution image found around the net. Thanks for the crits also; it was supposed to look seek, I don't know if anybody could feel well while hit by a car:p . But you are right. I will decrease the shadows and I'll fix the breast. The mirror frame will be changed also and I have to think what I'll do for the background.

03 March 2004, 02:34 AM
Wow she is coming along nicely, I like the refference photo aswell. I cant help it i am only human Hehe....

Am enjoying watching this one....

03 March 2004, 09:26 PM
element5, are we all not human? :D
Tommy Lee, glad I could impresse you. And I already took it slow. The reason I started so fast is that I seriously think to enter the 3d challenge also.

03 March 2004, 10:38 PM

Now I'm more impressed...
Can't wait to see your 3D Creation:thumbsup:

03 March 2004, 11:11 PM (

Here we go with fixes. Fixed the perspective of the bionic leg, fixed the face and the breast. Rough shape of the new mirror.

03 March 2004, 11:15 PM (

And a face detail

03 March 2004, 10:41 PM (

Another update. Added details (moles, freckles, some pubic hair, started to work on the background.

03 March 2004, 10:44 PM (

And another face detail. Worked a little on the nose, added a mole, increased the highlight on the lips.

03 March 2004, 02:01 AM
Looks amazing so far! I love your concept - it's very practical and original. Nice

Be sure to post a link to your 3D one for us when you start working on that :p

03 March 2004, 02:02 AM
Also, I just noticed that her eyes aren't level. I think the one on the right needs to come in and down a little.

Yepp... I also have that crit...

But anything else::bowdown: :thumbsup:

03 March 2004, 06:18 AM
Hiya again,

Love the girl she is come along way,
But dude u changed the angle on the perspective on the mirror, sorry but the background lets it down.

The girl is awesome...

03 March 2004, 09:16 AM
she looks like a girl know, scary.

03 March 2004, 08:05 PM
Evil Gerbil, I started having doubts about getting into 3d too, lack of time may prevent me. As for the eye, I'll see what I can do about it. Tommy Lee, it was noticed. It may be corected soon. element5, what you see is but a basic background, far, far away from what will look like in the end. And the perspective is easily adjusted. olidale, it was supose to look like that :)

03 March 2004, 05:58 AM
I really like the way u cut open the leg ( above the calf muscle)
The implants are rather placed uniformly...but it is artistic..(looks like a decor)

And its a good way showing back and front thro mirror ...good idea.

03 March 2004, 10:27 PM
Well, I thought people would be curiouse to see both sides of the bionic implant. And not only:D

03 March 2004, 11:18 PM
Stunning piece of art! The lighting you have created to the girl is just awesome and the design of cybernetic parts is believable. I'm just little bit sceptical about the blueish background... It perhaps creates even too much contrast and breaks the mood. But lets see how you envolve this forward...

03 March 2004, 09:30 PM
The background you have seen here is no more an obtion. I think on another things that should complete the thing. I'm glad you like the design, it was meant to be realistic.

03 March 2004, 10:51 PM
Nice image you got going here! I would suggest a couple of things like sharpening the face a bit (looks kinda blurry), e.g. the eyes, add more of a highlight to the eyeball, decrease the shadow you have on the bottom, let it blend a bit more (looks quite outliney) I think you should add shadows to the hair draping over her shoulder (in the reflection). Her nose looks a little flat, I suggest highlighting it a bit better, you have a slight dark curve going from the corner of the eye cutting the cheekbone highlight, and hitting the nose. I see it on the reference image to, but it looks a little like a black eye. It's a shadow from the lighting, but on yours it's not entirely clear that it's a shadow. well I attached an image, (I'm not entirely sure what I said it right but it's some suggestions) ack I'm probably blabaling at this stage, here's just a quick image so you can see what I'm thinking. (use a low opacity hard brush 20-34% instead of airbrush to sharpen it up.)

Alrighty keep up the drawing.

04 April 2004, 10:12 PM
Thanks for all the suggestions. Babbling or not, your good intention cannot pass unnoticed. Thanks a lot.

04 April 2004, 07:56 PM (

Its been a long time since my last update 'cause I've hit a dead end trying to add a proper background to my girl. Finaly, I found my inspiration and, in just about two hours worth of time, I've come out with this...

04 April 2004, 07:59 PM (

And while the backgrund needs lots of adjustments, I believe the face its ready.

04 April 2004, 08:39 AM
hi great work. u made it very fast.
i feel sori for her accident but still she made up and she looks great like this.:applause: :bounce:

04 April 2004, 12:01 AM
Well this is what I was aiming for. A sad story, an interesting prosthesis and a beautiful girl. "Sadness, yet hope to be is" as would say master Yoda.

04 April 2004, 12:23 AM
beautiful body,
great soft skin
pretty woman
just like Earl Miller ;)

04 April 2004, 02:55 AM
Gorgeous. Fantastic job on the anatomy. She seems a bit too perfect for having been in an accident, however (besides the missing arm and leg, of course). Maybe some scars on the flesh would add to realism.

Keep it up.

04 April 2004, 10:26 AM
Thanks for the input guys, it was kindda silence around here lately. I will submit soon my final entry after tweaking a little bit with colors and saturation, and maybe give some more blur to the background beyond the mirror.
Anyway, about the scars, you have to imagine the world and the technology of that world. If you can make bionic limbs obviously there is some intervention on scars. Today already scars can be treated by esthetic surgeons so, in a few decades, scars won't be a problem. But if you will look closer (I don't know if resolution permits that 'tho) you will see pinker areas (scar-like) where the mechanical meet the flesh.

05 May 2004, 10:42 AM (

Just a few things to make a full image about the prostesis

05 May 2004, 10:46 AM (

Any comments about this would be fine if you would like

05 May 2004, 11:51 AM
Your work is very beautiful. well, what can I say..? You've got the guts to show girl in such pose :applause: Your work reminds me of a few painters (Luis Royo, Lorenzo Sperlonga), who also make their works very erotic but yet subtle and beautiful. You are balancing on an edge of a knife here. Few more pixels and Your great work could be taken as rude and this subtle beauty would be taken away. Do not take me wrong - I like Your work very much the way it is now.
I think we have similar projects in some way (girl, mirror), but I'm form 3D contest. Well, that's it for me. Keep up the good work!

this is awsome man the technology looks pretty advance the attachments aer flawless . i guess when the surgry is complete they would put skin on te metal right:beer: :wip: :buttrock:

05 May 2004, 03:08 PM
grooshka, thanks for the reply. Believe me it was pretty delicate to go with that and still I'm not sure my work will even be taken into consideration. But it was apleasure working on it, especialy thinking about to make it into the rules of the contest. Beautiful but not ordinary, useful but not yet possible to be acomplished. I guess this kind of technology will be usable in about 15-25 years.

madone01, it's all depending about the way artificial skin researching is going. :D

05 May 2004, 09:13 PM
VERY nice... the figure work is awesome and the tech design is looks very sleek and ergonomic... which relates to the character very well. Is this your finished version?

Looks great! Keep it up and good luck in the contest!

05 May 2004, 11:07 AM
Well, I don't know for sure. I'm showing her around to get crits and suggestions. This is but my third digital work so I'm new on this field. I'm glad you do like her. Thanks a lot for the reply.

05 May 2004, 08:40 PM
good luck

05 May 2004, 09:20 AM
Thanks a lot buddy!

saru' mana! :D

05 May 2004, 09:49 AM
id say getting the right proportions of human body is especially difficult, because we all see tiny faults simce we look at them day to day, but you have done it. I like the soft feel to it, and that leg looks great (the ligament behind the knee is cool)

keep it up

05 May 2004, 12:31 AM
I like it!, very nice work!, keep going:thumbsup:

05 May 2004, 05:53 AM
that is a very good work. i think only effect of the mirror remains to be done.

05 May 2004, 02:19 PM
Thanks a lot for the replys guys. I'm quite impressed by your interest in my drawing.
eupee, I sure there are a lot of people outhere that, looking to my drawing, will see something wrong. Everybody sees the things different. And I don't know if I can take all the credit since I was using references. But thanks a lot for the suport, be sure your apreciation have wormed my heart.
pau, I do intent to go on and that wacom is a nice ideal to concentrate on:D.
anildawre, I will have to spend long hours in the mirror to catch the right effect. Hopefully I won't catch the narcisism sickness also :D

05 May 2004, 07:39 AM

one thing i do notice that looks a little weird is her hair and the reflection of her hair don't match. Her hair seems to stick out a bit, but in the reflection it is so smooth and follows the shape of her skull.

Hope this helps.

Great work!

05 May 2004, 09:58 AM
A really lovely girl and a nice design.
But maybe you should try to hide the sex with a matiere as a little bit transparent plastic hull.
Because I am afraid that your drawing cannot pass with everybody.
But personally I really love the picture.

05 May 2004, 04:37 PM
Syeko, I promis to look more carefull to those reflections, thanks for the help.
Riddick, I was thinking myself to do something about the nudity and thanks for the ideea of the plastic hull. Next time I'll update I will have them added.

05 May 2004, 09:23 AM (

Concerned by the fact that nudity may not be accepted and following some of your advises, I added some lingerie. What do you think, should I add a top too?

05 May 2004, 08:42 AM
your final image is getting better and better , good work, carry on the good work:thumbsup: :applause:

05 May 2004, 10:59 AM

first: your job is awesome!!!:buttrock:

second: I dont know about the lingerie... I prefer the nude. But, you right... the censure is a real fact...

see my entry (

05 May 2004, 01:25 PM

Wow this is awe inspiring stuff. I just have one thing to point out. The string of her lingerie is following the line of the prothesis as you look at her back. But if you look at the reflection in the mirror, the string is in a different position. It is coming straight across the prothesis.

Hope I've made myself clear.

Keep up the excellent work!!

05 May 2004, 09:17 PM
Thank you for the elating anildawre. I'm glad you like it.
londero, I wouldn't call it censure but I do prefere myself the nude. I think I'll go with it and face whatever will happen with the thought that I won a lot by simply participating in this contest.
zlote, I know what you are talking about but you have to imagine that the prosthesis does sort of a curl, rising a bit while going yo the front of the thigh. Anyway, the lengerie will go.

06 June 2004, 09:16 PM (

This is my final post. I decided to go with a nude after all my friends throwed me in the face all the nude clasics, with their rubocond beauty and the pinky flesh. Why not, I said. I know this may be my downfall but the important thing was to participate.

06 June 2004, 10:53 PM
Any of you guys can tell me what's the ftp adresse I can upload my tiff file? I'm kind of a nub at this.

06 June 2004, 10:25 AM
Well I think that there is not an official ftp addresse for the moment.

Your final image is really nice..

06 June 2004, 08:37 PM (

this I've posted just because it looks a line art is required but I don't have one. So I post this to be ok.
