View Full Version : Machineflesh 2D Challenge Entry: Daryl Mandryk

03-18-2004, 06:55 PM
Daryl Mandryk has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.

03-23-2004, 04:02 AM (

Here's my concept sketch, I want to inject some action into the whole machine/flesh theme.

Now onto the next stage...

03-23-2004, 04:07 AM (

first milestone concept.

03-23-2004, 06:05 AM
great sketch, It really captures the action

it would be nice to see more clearly what the machine parts actually are and how they function. I guess that will become more obvious as you develop.

03-23-2004, 06:43 AM
really nice start ! i like your work , good luck for the next !

03-23-2004, 10:43 AM
Cool scribble, I would try to give the idea something extra though, since fighting monsters have been done before a lot of times.
So it might be a good idea to give your monster a special personality/behaviour and not just go for cool looks only :)

i think that the machine flesh theme has something more to do with the individual and its acceptation of the machine or how the machine has incorporated it, maybe this help...

03-23-2004, 04:41 PM
My next idea is to make a lady with wires coming out of her head!

03-23-2004, 04:50 PM

03-23-2004, 05:41 PM
... hey is that sarcasm??

hey love the pose with that huge dude with cables hanging fom him giving chase.

03-23-2004, 06:04 PM
Very dynamical composition
especially a pose of the man!

03-23-2004, 06:24 PM
great action shot!!

it's got tons of movement...i hope that translates into the colour piece...

03-23-2004, 09:59 PM
Looking good so far, D. Love the energy. Maybe give the man some sorta cybernetics, or whatever you want to call that kinda crap. I'm pullin for you... well besides mine:beer:

03-24-2004, 03:29 AM
Kick arse, this idea is classic, with balls.:buttrock:

03-24-2004, 05:17 AM
Great technique u use...

Also great capture of action:thumbsup:

03-24-2004, 09:36 AM
Sometimes these sketsches are almost more "Alive" then finished work`s....
... hope u will keep this energy in the milestones to come...

03-25-2004, 04:54 AM (

at this point it I'm well aware it all looks like crap. But that's my workflow, start very very loose, and just keep on refining until I'm happy with it. By the way, thanks for the comments, I'll do my best to preserve the energy of the sketch as I go forward.

03-25-2004, 04:55 AM

Yeah, I miss the big jaw, too. Very dynamic pose for both characters, I like it. This picture very good! Those narrow lines inside large black areas put some interesting texture to the picture. And they describe the motion very good! I'm looking forward for the next milestone!

03-25-2004, 12:56 PM
Great WorK!
Its a great impact scene...i can imagine this picture full of details
good job!

03-26-2004, 03:51 AM
Nice, but when are you going to do the lady with wires coming out of her head?

03-26-2004, 04:55 PM (

'Machine-hunter' - coloring WIP

Had a couple hours last night so I thought I'd try and hit my next milestone upload. Things are starting to come together at this point a bit, but there is still lots of work yet left to do. This is also the stage where I try to make final decisions on poses and compostion (although I guess nothings ever final until the end). I also throw some big colors down to describe the mood, and try to lay a bit of texture in. At this point I'm not too worried about details, but I'll punch up a few areas just for the heck of it. All the detailing and uprezzing will be done in the next stage.

Thanks for all the feedback peeps.

03-26-2004, 05:11 PM
WoW, that's going better and better !
Il really like the mood you are giving to your scene

03-26-2004, 05:24 PM
Yeah! With the colors is getting really god!

03-26-2004, 05:35 PM
I'm a big fan!!! ...i just love his jaw.

03-26-2004, 06:43 PM
Great Work... Was working well from the first sketch!!!

03-26-2004, 09:18 PM
Thats awesome love your works

03-26-2004, 09:38 PM
crazybread; I checked out your web site, your penciling skills are great! You have a total warhammer 40,000 vibe hapenning, I really dig it!

03-27-2004, 06:19 AM
markw7, I spent all night on this. The contest is over!

*edit* there was a joke image here, but I thought I better remove it.

03-27-2004, 08:52 AM
Hey, that's unfair !!! I've had the same idea before you ! LOL

But you've got a better drawing style and composotion than mine.

Very impressive !
Keep it up ! :applause:

03-27-2004, 08:00 PM
Really cool colorwip...
More Frazetta less Valejo....the way i like it...
Dont kno if i like that ball`ed head...maybe if u can add a chimney or something?

Friedric P
03-27-2004, 08:37 PM
Wow, I missed your last entry yesterday (I'm speaking of the coloring wip :p , despite the wired-hair girl is unbelievable too lol ).
Simply excellent, amazing dynamism... And the Frazetta touch I always loved... Keep it up!!
Good luck!!

Tommy Lee
03-28-2004, 05:22 AM
Awesome dude!!!! I love the way of your workflow:thumbsup:
I really learn alot when I watch your way of working from sketch to final!!!

03-29-2004, 02:02 AM
WIP update. Working on this thing in between other things since the deadline is sooooo far away. I'll probably take some time of and come back and finish it off.

03-29-2004, 02:09 AM
Kick arse!

03-29-2004, 02:17 AM
Great stuff, man :buttrock:
Good to see some action packed stuff with all of these static images the rest of us are making :p

Tommy Lee
03-29-2004, 04:50 AM

03-30-2004, 12:06 AM
here comes jhony!!!

very agresive,great stuf :buttrock: :buttrock:

03-30-2004, 01:00 AM
Looking quite good. You work very fast. Nice lights and darks going on there. The guy with the gun looks screwed, hehe. I think you can go in and define him a bit more, but great job on this so far!

03-30-2004, 02:05 AM
I love the pose you came up with, I love the monster(the protegonise in this challenge), I the technique you're firing here. Well done!

Hey, just a taught. how bout the dude carry two rifles. I mean we all can see the one on the right hand. Was just thinking what if he carried another one that is pointing at the monter with his left hand. Well, it was just a taught. However I look at this piece, it reminds me greatly of Joe Chiodo's way of colouring. Very nice indeed! Have a beer on me.

03-30-2004, 02:10 AM
derelict; actually in one of my first sketches I had a pistol on the other hand, but I ditched it - not sure why...just felt it looked better. Maybe it makes him look a little more screwed, I dunno.

Haven; oh yeah, lots of detailing left to do, don't worry. I think it's safe to say the final product will look a lot better. ;)

03-30-2004, 02:25 AM
My bad dude. My bad. Still, I feel he is under arm against the behimoth. Than again, that does make the image more interesting. I sense a lost cause on the part of the human dude.
Here is another beer on me.

03-30-2004, 03:12 AM
I think I'll make the mahcine-beast thing wounded so it looks as though he got in a couple shots, and that really pissed him off.

03-30-2004, 03:15 AM
OHHHH Baby does that look good! Great job so far. I cant' wait to see more.

THAT really sounds like a good plan. :bounce: me bouncing up and down in anticipation

03-30-2004, 07:54 AM

Fast work!!

There's some great atmosphere in that last colour image. And the movement is still there from the first concept (i loved that drawing).

i think a wounded beastie is a great idea...and could really show off his macine bits.

03-30-2004, 10:30 AM
The first black and white picture is cool !
I love it very much , can you keep this style in your colour version ? !

04-01-2004, 04:56 AM
just a WIP update.

04-01-2004, 05:03 AM
Ohh YYYES! what can I say:

...I love the feeling of action, movement!

Tommy Lee
04-01-2004, 06:34 AM
Wow... the wounds are great... now its even more dramatic!!!
Every update is an eyetreasure...:D

04-01-2004, 03:44 PM
thanks guys, I'll post another update soon. Since I'm almost done with this one, I might start on a new idea, then I'll just pick whichever I like best, and that'llbe my entry.

04-01-2004, 04:00 PM
That is turning out REALLY nice. :bounce:

04-01-2004, 04:59 PM
looking good man, but are you going to have more stuff in the background?

04-01-2004, 05:10 PM
Yes, I'll probably add some elements as long as it doesn't clutter the image up. Alternatively, I might expand the canvas a bit if I'm squeezed for room.

04-01-2004, 05:52 PM
Great progression from sketch to final stages- and a lot of great input, so I will not feel bad if mine gets passed, but here's what I suggest: the eyes of the behemoth, add some expression to them, make us look in there for some shred of humanity behind the beast, or maybe for some motivation- like being really pissed because he got shot at as it was suggested previously or rage against the man in front...
Just a suggestion- great stuff

04-01-2004, 05:56 PM
Dude, Yer Awesome!:buttrock:

04-02-2004, 04:56 PM
WIP update

04-02-2004, 05:01 PM
:bounce: Hey - he got eyes... thanks! I think it's a winner!
I would appreciate some input on my stuff...

04-02-2004, 07:57 PM
Yeah, I went back to the eyes - I think I'll tweak them a bit still, try some different sizes etc. Good suggestion though, it gives him more life.

04-02-2004, 09:54 PM
Can't wait to see more...
Could you check my entryes aswell and give me some input please...

04-03-2004, 01:14 AM
I think you're submission looks great, but the reason I'm writing is because i clicked your site and read this " figured if that mountain climber from Touching the Void could drag himself all that ways with a broken leg, I could get stop being lazy and do some sketches." and yeah, I know exactly how you felt. That's the kind of motivation i need right now. I love your web site design too.

04-03-2004, 03:21 AM
You just sealed the deal with that last update D. I love those flames in there. Brought sooo much more to the pic.

04-03-2004, 04:20 AM
I love your workflow. Even though you say it looks like crap at the begining it works. I think all you really need now on this one is to roughen it up a bit. Also the lighting on the beast seems a little bit odd. I think if you highlight the edges that are facing the lava? , especially around his rear end, right leg, and right hand then the lava? will look more convincing. Though I'm probably telling you something you already know.

Anyways, Great entry *shakes fist* you did an awsome job at capturing the action/energy . . . cheers:beer:

04-03-2004, 08:06 PM
There's still more updates to come, not quite finished with this one. I'm going to add a rim light like Smpleton suggested, and probably tweak the design of the mechanical bits a bit. I also have some more work to do on the hunter's body and gun. There's a few areas that still seem a bit flat to me that I need to make more 3D.

Thanks for the comments all.

04-03-2004, 08:14 PM
:buttrock: Mybe a little splash of hot lava jumping at the viewer in the lower right corner will add some more tension....
And maybe a scar on the monsters face?!?

04-04-2004, 07:02 PM
Awesome work :)

04-04-2004, 07:15 PM
agreed , excellent supersmoothcool

04-14-2004, 01:50 AM
WIP update

edit; updated pic.

04-14-2004, 02:38 AM
Awesome! Your piece has a very classic feel to it. Strong composition and brilliant colors! God, I haven't even finished my lineart yet.
Looking wicked, bravo!

04-14-2004, 05:00 AM
Kick Arse!

I havn't done my line work either.... or chosen a concept.

04-14-2004, 05:29 AM
oh crap......this is good, wow, dang this is the first time i have seen your post, looks very good, best of luck

04-14-2004, 08:51 AM
Ouh la la ! ca déchire !

Awesome !! :applause:

04-14-2004, 03:58 PM
Shoot, looks like my server's down, my WIP has become a red X.

I've been having a lot of problems with Shaw lately....don't these fools realize I have a contest to compete in! =P

edit; looks like its back!

04-14-2004, 06:25 PM
That's great :buttrock:

Reminds me of a magic: the gathering cards

04-14-2004, 08:13 PM
Lava in the foreground- very cool!
Now, there's a little thought I had... the man in front of the beast looks too "untouched"- maybe a few cuts on his arm and a rip in his pants, you know, like he's been slammed a couple of times on those rocks...?
Just a thought....

04-14-2004, 08:59 PM
You're reading my mind tedjel. I need to make him look a touch more desperate.

04-15-2004, 02:15 AM
Hey excellent work!!! I really like the creature, as well as the atmosphere. Also It looks better flipped. Kind of reminds me of artwork from the Heavy Metal books.
Great work once again :applause:

04-15-2004, 08:22 AM
It looks much nicer flipped! I gotta say though, I am not sure how successful it is in communicating that the monster had taken a few shots. What if his gun left a blue-glowing projectile somewhere in the beast's body? Maybe somewhere that increases the tension of the scene... though the guy with the gun shot someplace that makes sense when you want to kill a big machine beast like this but somehow it failed to do the damage he intended... ...the chest, the nads, whatever :P

Very impressive and an immediate favorite of the ones I've seen so far. Love the colors!

04-15-2004, 09:57 AM
One of the most intersting piece here ! Very impressive !

04-15-2004, 03:40 PM
Looks great!!
Lots of energy and muscles...i like the boots btw ...donnu why, just like `em:thumbsup:

04-15-2004, 04:00 PM
hmmmm shot in the nads...haha I like it.
04-19-2004, 05:02 PM
:surprised one of the best entrance to my opinion.
Congratulations for the dynamic , and "snapshot - feeling" !
Color is top too.
Pro stuff...

EDIT 20/04/2004
I've just visited your website.
Quite good... ;)

04-19-2004, 08:13 PM
I really love it man! Great colors, great balance..just nice.
One tip though, if I may. The eyes of the monster lack the
spirit. Give them an edge, like insaneley mad look :surprised:,
or mabe just unearthly angry or something.

Hope your not quite finished with it. As a lot of you other
guys I haven't found my concept yet

Hard Creation
04-19-2004, 08:28 PM
thats very cool ..
very nice.

04-20-2004, 05:43 AM
I can't remember the movie.. [mb it was ghost busters]

but I remember in one of them I think Bill Murray said something [and i'll address this to Blackarts...]

"YOU are like... a God to me... not THE God.. .but "A" God..."

omg this WIP thread is so freakin' kick ass it made me pee my pants.

after i passed out and had a heartattack

and cried myself to sleep from the burning in my eyes because i'm not worthy to have even have made it half way through the WIP...

just plain sick awsome

also what happened. i thought it was all over when i saw the woman with the cables in her head... why'd you stop?

[Waynes World: "We're not worthy... we're not worthy!!!!!!!!!"]

04-20-2004, 06:42 AM
Damn! I love your work....your website is by far one of the best I have seen this year. GREAT PAINTING SKILL U possess!

04-20-2004, 07:16 AM
o thats it, theres no way I can win anything

04-20-2004, 02:59 PM

hahha your msg made me laugh, sorry to put you through that! I still haven't settled on the final painting, so who knows- the woman with wires might make a comeback!

hehe... good. I aim to please.

mb one of these days i could do so well with my work.

[just working on my thread right now... its the first time i've really tried to put anything online or even remotely tryt to work with photoshop like this... so now i'm starting to appreciate the sick amount of time one can put into colouring like i'm seeing in this thread... hardcore... its all about the hypeness... either that or women with cables in their head no?]

that being said all in good fun...

[could you take a look at my thread and give me an idea on how i should proceed? I'd really like some feedback]

either that, or mock my techno-archane girl...

[we're not worthy!!!!!!!! ]

Actually it'd be cool if you do come in with a new image or two. Just had a look at our website :buttrock:

04-23-2004, 10:17 PM
Hey, Great painting, good action going on in it. I like your style. Very "finished" looking.
cheers, Jared S. S.

05-18-2004, 01:01 PM
Awesome image bud, love the dynamic feel of the whole scenario, best colour work ive seen so far. Looks great, would love to see some of your other stuff. Congrats on getting your piece to this stage.

05-24-2004, 10:45 AM
Wake up man and come back!!!!

05-24-2004, 06:32 PM
he he.. sorry I've been negelcting this thread, I've just been very crazy-busy lately. I'll post an update very soon, probably tonight.

Thanks for the kick in the pants!

05-25-2004, 03:44 PM (

After a long break I thought I better come back and finish it off. It's almost done except for some minor tweaks.

05-25-2004, 04:07 PM
Wow great that's very impressive !!! what energy

Before you send the final piece I think it could be great to detail more the flesh part of the right arm of the "beast", it's kinda blurry.

But man you've done it ! very cool stuff

05-25-2004, 04:19 PM
I haven't checked your progress for a while. It's looking fantastic, well done, I like your style. That is one scary mutha.

05-25-2004, 05:03 PM
Yep...gotta be careful with those details....too much and things look stiff, too little and they look blurry. It's always a balancing act. Bonestudio, you mean the arm that is coming towards the viewer correct? I also noticed I lost some detail when I resized the image....stupid upload limits!

05-25-2004, 05:09 PM
WOW!! notinhg to say! just awesome:drool:

05-27-2004, 08:40 AM
gee.. nice colors and dynamic composition. It is final?

05-27-2004, 09:06 AM
Brilliant work...

I loved the dynamism in that first concept you posted (the stark contrast balck and white image) and worried you'd find it hard to capture that in your final colour image. But it's all there...

Tons of movement!! Great rendering!!

Good luck!!

05-30-2004, 08:13 PM
SO beautiful! A lot of energy !

05-30-2004, 09:37 PM
 Have not seen your work since the early sketches which themselves were really dynamic, so I was amazed to see how much more you've done.

Love the composition and energy of the peice..

what more can I say

05-31-2004, 10:30 AM
Hi Blackarts,

Huhhh...your stuff is awesome.. Smooth and clean style but not sterile. When i look at your picture am not confused..I mean i have a bright overview first and just after that comes the exploring of details. Keep it up it's wonderful!!!

05-31-2004, 01:22 PM
nice coloring and composition

05-31-2004, 03:13 PM
thanks guys, I'll posting the final version shortly! In the meantime, any crits at all would be great....anything that catches your eye let me know.

06-03-2004, 10:34 PM
Wow, awsome work man! This is one scary dude! The colors are just mind blowing.

06-04-2004, 12:26 AM
One thing i did notice, and its not a huge thing but maybe you would consider making the flames in the background a little more irregular, what i mean is that the flames behind the creature look like they all end at the same level and you have a strip of black night sky.

I would assume that the flames would sit at different levels but at the moment there is almost a clear defining line at which they stop in the sky and its a little off putting.

Thats the only C+C i would suggest but otherwise as ive mentioned before, certainly one of the most beautiful colour jobs ive seen in the comp. WELL DONE!!   :D

06-04-2004, 12:26 AM
I posted twice some how sorry...must be cause ive been drinking so much:beer:

06-04-2004, 12:36 AM
All I got to say is....Damn!

06-04-2004, 02:01 PM
Great render....I have to ask though...why did you flip the composition? I honetly believe it your eye leads in an out
better with the orinal layout... trust your original instincts.

The the area that throws me offf the most is ...on the last layout is your eye comes in on the tangency of both of the characters arms on the left side of the image... this area worked better as an exit for your eye on the previous layout. especially with the gun smoke leading you of lightly. And the entry of the eye on the raised monster arm on the previous layout feels natural and brings you eye comfortably from left to right .

anyway...something to think about... great image.

06-05-2004, 08:03 AM
a deep bow frome me to u

Have to say that the technique is very good, i like the composition and dynamic u put in the pic... its just great and i dont have much to critisize... and i especially dig the moving lights on the beasts back arm!

06-07-2004, 08:45 PM
As I said before- really great work.
I have to admit though that I would like to see it flipped back as well- that's all the input for this one...

06-08-2004, 05:12 AM
ok, I'lll probably flip it back for the final. The public has spoken!

06-12-2004, 12:36 PM
A wise man listens to advice...
By the way, I could use some on my 2D baron...:buttrock:

06-14-2004, 07:26 AM
here's the final image folks, thanks for taking the time to check out this thread and offer your suggestions and input. From start to finish I probably put about 8 days of full-time work into it all together. Usually my deadlines for painting are a lot tighter, so this was an unusual opportunity to stretch out a painting over a few months and go back now and then and add new ideas. The original image was about 3000 by 4200 pixels, and it was all done in Painter 7.

06-14-2004, 07:42 AM (

for the milestone

06-14-2004, 07:44 AM
Aargh!...

06-14-2004, 07:56 AM
Job well done

06-14-2004, 09:21 AM
that is very nice, you got a massive amount of movement to this, you feel for the dude that is about to get messy with the beast, the expression on the beast face is excellent, its wikkid...:bounce:

06-14-2004, 09:36 AM
This is art:)
U managed to keep that "rage" and wildness all the way from rough sketch to final image.
Love it:)

BTW im glad to se that u mirror ur image sometimes:)
Im doing the same thing, i gues its because i that way look at the picture at a whole new way:)

06-14-2004, 09:41 AM
WOW!:buttrock: Impressive colors! I like it

My MachineFlesh Challenge 2D thread (

06-14-2004, 09:53 AM
Wohohoww! Very dinamic and the colors are kinda aggitating me, and that's good because I guess that you intended this. The one in the front shoud decide fast if it fires or if it runs. I'd run like hell.

you got my vote... good work..

and I hope you agree/ understand why the compostion was thought to be fliped back.. It sounded like you did it based on a few opinions.

06-14-2004, 03:38 PM
thanks guys....When I work I am constantly flipping back and forth, back and's a lot easier to picture something in 3D that way I think. It's sort of a poor mans method of rotating your object in 2D and looking at the other side. Usually at the very end I'll decide which to use, the flipped or non flipped version, then sign it, then it's done. In this case, as shawnalanpeters pointed out - it reads a bit better in the original orientation.

good point on flipping it...I will do that during the drawing stage to see what is really out of proportion...and perspective.. it is a very good and easy technigue to see errors in your design. It's amazing what will pop out in reverse.

Great pic

This entry was propably the first serious and good looking piece when i heard of this competition. So it has been around since the beginning!

Curve of the picture is slightly too *exxerated? right word?* for my taste, but since its youre style it can be no actual critic.

Good luck! Gongrats on finished pic!
