This is gonna be a great challenge. Allready there has been loads of excellent ideas floating around. I'm gonna plan mine from the beggining though.

I'm thinking that for this too work, and give me a better chnace of winning ( :) ) I need to come up with something original. So I'm gonna have to throw all convention out the window.

I don't want to go down the route of big mechs, nor do i want to do anything big dark and gothic... which i have to say does lend itself to this topic, but i have a fealing too many people will be doing this. I'm going to concentrate on the "enhancement" idea.

I'm gonna set it in the near future. So the whole idea shouldn't be too out of this world. I might try and put meaning into the final picture, maybe something to do with bullying, i dunno yet, but i might try and portray the mechanically enhanced humans are segragated from the "normal" humans.

Sorry for the long spiel, but i gotta start somewhere.

okay, here we go.

I want to get the mood and stmosphere right before i get bogged down with the details. So here's a rough plan for the actual image. As you can see I'm gonna go with the bullying scene. I'm gonna make the two blue figures (the ones getting bullied) the mech/organic, and the others normal humans. Allthough, maybe I'll make the normal humans a bit futuristic! Well what do you people think so far?

edit: nearly forgot to say, the main aim of my entry will be photorealism. I think thats gonna be the best way to do it...means more work mind you :D

playing about with a concept idea. Your imput would be useful

Anyways, this is a fairly quick sketch, I'm thinking some kind of security guard, or imperial guard....I like the sound of that one. Imperial guard...yeah.

I'm sorry, but again look down bottom for the picture. Under the post title "concept 004"

03 March 2004, 06:11 PM
Here's another small one. This is bad, I'm all over the place. I haven't yet been able to come up with a descent concept :D

Well never mind. Give it time.

see image in the post server seems to be giving me trouble, the title of the post is "concept _003"

Here's my first main concept art drawing. Slight variation on the first one. I think I'll do some detailed drawings next.

03 March 2004, 12:18 PM (

Another concept. I'm quite liking this design. So I may keep this one.

03 March 2004, 02:41 PM (

here's the earlier concept which I've said is lower down the page!

03 March 2004, 02:47 PM (

This is the concept which I posted earlier, just that this time I've entered it into the comp! Sorry about the messy thread. I've just submitted all the earlier posted concepts!

03 March 2004, 04:23 PM (

A shaded version of my second concept. I quite like this idea. I'll try and develope it a bit!

03 March 2004, 04:43 PM
What exactly is the enhancement for in the last picture? :)
It looks cool but i can't really see what it is for :)

03 March 2004, 05:32 PM
Kind of gas mask. I'm thinking future - earth - polluted. I'm not sure why the tubes going into the back of his head. But I thought it looked kewl at the time

03 March 2004, 05:50 PM
Something like a gasmask doesn't really work unless his nose is covered too.
But the idea of some kind of protection against pollution could work :)

03 March 2004, 06:18 PM
good point. I like the concept though, even if i don't know what it's good for! All I need now is a wacky body! Can you see any improvements? and any idea for a reason for the concept would be cool!

03 March 2004, 06:31 PM
It might be better to think of a reason before you draw, things with tubes/masks always look cool but when you work on looks only you run the risk of looks over content. So try to find about what makes you feel this is your best idea.

Well what about this: people emigrated to an alien planet which has good living conditions but only the air is really bad and to save energy for cleaning air they decided to change humans mechanically. Ack just an idea you know your movies/newspaper stuff about environmental problems, right? ;)

Say, got any feedback for my machineflesh scribbles? I posted loads of replies already but yah nothing yet...see the link in my post.

03 March 2004, 07:40 PM
Hey cheers, good advice. I need to buck up my ideas a bit! How long do we have? I can't remember. Anyways, I'll go have a look at your stuph, I know how annoying it is when people don't comment!

03 March 2004, 07:55 PM (

This is it!! Okay, set in the future, a post "apocalyptic" earth, where the earth had become reliant on machines, however some kind of virusm, caused the destruction of the machines, and thus the downfall of the society. Following this came a time of war, where the humans scattered into tribes. However a few people stayed in the cities collecting the old hardware, making modifications and adding to themselves, thus keeping themselves alive for longer than most humans.

The concept is this: Portraying a "technomancer", who has made many modifications, and all that remains of the original organic person is his head and torso. He can manouveur round his layer by winches and wires. However his main mode of transport is a mech, a large, kick ass mech, which he slots into.

Anyways, the picture will portray the "technomancer" stretching while out of his mech towards some kind of symbolic thing (I haven't decided this bit yet, maybe a flower, symbolising the last remenants of his original humanity) in the background will be his mech, looking particuarly useless. Also in the background will be piles and piles of computers/screens/hardware.

So, what do you think, sorry about the length of the post!

03 March 2004, 08:00 PM (

This drawing is an idea for the perspective of the picture. I'm thinking that the technomancer will be seen from behind/above.

I still haven't thought of what he's stretching out to. What do you think?

Ceraphym Shadow

maybe you could have him stretching out to reach some kind of photo of him as a full human, or maybe him with his human family or even a child of his. i always seem to bring emotion and help the story along in a drawing.
but i like the whole mech operator thing...almost like a punishment and a grant of great power all in one.:buttrock:

03 March 2004, 05:55 PM
Ah seems you ideas begin to take shape ^0^

Seems what you need know is a good symbol of being human. Or maybe something that personal for him. It could be a photo of he and his wife/kids.
In any case it has to be something really important that he wants to crawl out of his mech for it. And it has to be clearly linked to him.
Be careful with the cheesiness factor your story is pretty dramatic watch out it doesn't become meladramatic :)

03 March 2004, 10:07 PM
Yeah, I'm not sure about the whole photo thang. It needs a bit of thinking! But thanks for the motivational comments

I'm working on the actual scene at the mo, trying to draw it out. Anyways, that should be up and online in the next few days. :bounce: I'm starting to really enjoy this one!

03 March 2004, 02:50 AM
Maybe to represent his humanity you could have a dog (or some other domesticated animal) next to/nearby him, content watching his master. I think the animal would have more impact on the viewer than a flower or photo. Those are objects (as the flower isn't alive anymore) but the dog is alive and breathing, also animals share a link with their owner which can be very tangible at times.

Have to agree. But till now a good concept to go.

I'm liking the dog idea. Or at least some kind of domestic animal. having it sit on is haunches watching as its master reaches out to it in his pain.

Yeah. Okay I'm gonna go away and work on that. Actually, you could give the dog some kind of weird halo, very subtle. Thus it could be construde that the dog is in the imagination of the "technomancer" thus representing his inner strugle aswell as his outer one!

how does that sound?

03 March 2004, 11:01 AM (

At last I've come up with, in my oppinion, a good looking scene. It came to me in a sudden burst of inspiration. I just had to scribble it down and put my paw print on it before anyone else did it.

Slight change in the concept. Still staying with the "technomancer" however, for this to work. The technomancer has died, and his "mech" which he created and is lifting him up to the "gods". So there is a whole load of link overs. The act of the mech lifting him up is a very human concept, and then we can still see the self reliance that the technomancer had on the machines.

Anyways, what do you think...Better pic on its way

03 March 2004, 11:39 AM (

Just a quick update. I appreciate that in my haste and enthusiasm the last drawing may have been a bit tricky to work out! So here's a nice labeled one!

For the bcakground I'm still thinking stacks of computers. Also I think that I'll change the proportions a bit. Have the mech much larger. I'm not too sure about the wires. originally I was going to have the wires supporting him, but now I'm thinking of just having a few for aesthetic purposes.

03 March 2004, 05:37 PM
hmm, I think this idea is the one for me, however at the moment it looks like the mech is ripping the body apart...which isn't the point.

What you say to having the mech on bended knee, looking skyward holding the "technomancer" at chest hight, supporting him under the arms?

This would look more...religous and human. Which is kinda of what I'm looking for. I need your imput!!

04 April 2004, 01:42 PM (

I think this is the final scene concept. On the right we have the stacks of computers/screens, I think it would be kewl to have a few of the screens on, it would make for some nice light and shadow play. We have the mech in the middle looking up at his master, and then we have the master hanging in a crucified like position.

There will be a strong light from behind, I'm not sure whether to have the light directly above the hanging figure. Well I guess I'll get that sorted later.

Comments useful

04 April 2004, 04:55 PM (

Just a quick update, blocked in the two characters, changed the size of the scene. Made the computer stack more obviously boxes.

Also playing around abit with the background colour.

04 April 2004, 10:04 AM (

just a quick update.

04 April 2004, 08:35 PM
okay, the reason for the short comment on the last pic, was because I was really badly hung over.

Anyways, I'm thinking that I'll but some text across the screens which are on. And I gotta sort out the lighting better. It's very dark in the foreground, which I like, but I think it needs another lightsource to pic out the shapes of the hardware...any ideas?

I'm thinking of having the stacks of computers fading into the background. I'm also not sure about the way the figure is just hanging there, it needs something else. I want to have the figure looking slightly upweards, so that the strong light, will just highlight the brow, and nose bridge, and create strong shadow where the eyes are, so the face will almost look skeletal.

Anyways, comments would be useful. Either you all think this is lame, or you can't be arsed to add comments to a relatively unknown artists thread...
