View Full Version : Game Art Comp 6: R Lee Ermey / Full Metal Jacket

03 March 2004, 09:45 AM
Im not really sure if I will ever finish it because of work, but ill give it a go as hes from my fave film ever!
Just reserving my spot.

03 March 2004, 10:22 AM
Just a quick update - after 1 hour i managed to cram in after work. Its not spectacular or anything, but its getting there once i see the (rough) texture on it.

Made in maya, by the way.

03 March 2004, 10:35 AM
Ahh you suck :P He was the one i was going to do hehe, although i dont really have time atm and prolly couldnt do him right hehe. I even got those pics saved >_<

Hopefully you can get him done and good :) I most likely wouldnt heh.

03 March 2004, 11:29 AM
Cool char. I was actually considering to do Gomer Pyle from the same movie at one point. That would have been a great!

03 March 2004, 11:43 AM
Hehe - thanks for the comments. I love his character - There was also pvt. Pyle and Animal mother to consider doing. I hope i do him justice! Ill have to do some screencaps of the DVD - I have no side views - unless anyone out there has any?

some words of wisdom:

03 March 2004, 06:32 PM
A bit of an update. Textures are still tempoary.

Sorry about the crappy size and quality, but im running out of webspace. Im overdue for a cleanup of my site.

03 March 2004, 11:18 PM
I personaly think that the textures look great !

03 March 2004, 10:05 AM
I dont know why but he totally reminds me of George Bush in those last renders. hmmm...

oh well, looking good man keep up the good work, and good choice of character.

im surprised no-ones mentioned private joker, "with the duality of man" genius argument for wearing a peace badge on his helmet.

03 March 2004, 10:11 AM
This is going just fine. I would say his cheeks should be more to the back, the front of this face seems to be a bit flattish.

Make sure his mouth is able to open, otherwise he wont be able to produce a constant stream of insults

03 March 2004, 03:00 AM
Making good progress with the body now....
Its still symmertrised at the moment, so the jacket front crossover is a bit of a mess.
Gonna start modelling the details next, and maybe optimising / adding polys where its needed.

03 March 2004, 03:20 AM

Looking tons better than i would have made him :)

I have to agree that he looks like bush in the last render of both of those pics heh.

Get him all done and send a pic of it to mail call lol, maybee they will plug it on the show :P

03 March 2004, 04:56 AM
he only looks like bush from a 3/4 view, though. maybe that's just me

03 March 2004, 05:11 AM
So far so good. He could use a little more neck though.

03 March 2004, 05:59 AM
haha, this entry is great.

03 March 2004, 01:45 AM
Unless theres anything anyone can find wrong with it - id like to think i have finished with the modeling now. He comes in just under 4500 polys - a lot of them is used on the hat and face.

Hope to start UVing soon.

03 March 2004, 03:56 PM
No replies?

I need to know if its looking ok - im having a bit of a crisis on his head - my mates seem to think he looks like George dubya Bush!
Any tips?

03 March 2004, 04:10 PM
did you see my earlier post ;) i said looks like bush

but something you have to remember is that the actor looks a little like bush in one of the reference pics anyway,

1 thing i think would make him more like the sarge, is making him open mouthed i mean the guy was always shouting, even with a gun pointed at him.

Just looking actually at your profile veiw of him, his head shape looks a little funny, The front view looks spot on, but from the side it looks a little flat faced. that might be whats making the dude look like bush

03 March 2004, 04:33 PM
His hat looks too short, and has a lot of geometry....... but, if you are under the limit, I guess it's ok. You could some of those polys on the face, along the jaw, at the jowels. He looks too young, without a little bit of sag...

03 March 2004, 05:43 PM
The head looks wider than the actor's. The neck and shoulder area is slouched whereas he generally has a rigid straight posture.

03 March 2004, 09:39 PM
Ive completed the geometry now - not many huge changes, but ive cleaned it up and tweaked a few areas.
Im not able to join the trousers to the jacket though. Doing so would create a lot more polys and make a bit of a mess due to the overlap. Is it ok in games design to have seporate unjoined pieces?

Hope ive fixed some of the problems that were brought up. Ill open his mouth once i have it UV'd

03 March 2004, 04:01 AM
wow, the face is dead on.. shoulders are a bit funny but other then that its grade a. good choice for a character btw, i'll never get tired of the things ermey says in that movie :)

03 March 2004, 08:47 AM
great work

i like old man &girl characters :)

Nice work on the head model
i can't wait to see it textured

03 March 2004, 01:16 PM
nice ... itīs alot of geo but thats allright ... limit is limit :)

and I bet you could suck a golfball through a ... ;)

03 March 2004, 07:46 PM
Ok.... Spent some time on the skin textures, but theyre worth it - the head is working quite well now. It was kinda tricky filling in the gaps that I couldnt get off my reference pic. I used photos of my dad's head for that!
Gonna start UVing the body next.

03 March 2004, 08:13 PM
Looking really good so far AndyH! After how far you took your last competition entry, I can't wait to see this one finished.

03 March 2004, 09:05 PM
woha nice you used the photoskin proparly and made a very good tex with volume :)

03 March 2004, 01:54 AM
Overall - the textures are about 70% done. They still need more detail and shading.
The front view is with default lights, the rest are with no lights (100% luminosity) so you can see the texture properly.

04 April 2004, 03:36 AM
I think his head is pokin through the top of the hat ?

04 April 2004, 04:46 AM
Great job!
Nitpick:At this point, the neck/ throat wrinkles are looking a little overpowering I think, they are strongly defined, so you eye goes there first. This, to me, seems to takes away from the likeness because it distracts you from his face.

04 April 2004, 05:21 AM
Looking real good! Just a few crits...

The patch of hair at the 2 top corners of his forehead is very blurry, also the jaw line from the ear lobe to the chin is a little blurry.

the skin tone your are using for the seams that connect the ear to the head could be a little darker to blend in better with the surrounding detail.

If you have enough poly's to spare, I think the pin/medal thing on his hat would be cool if it was modeled.

Great work!

04 April 2004, 09:59 AM
Awsome work man!!

TBH though he doesnt have the ermey feel to him, he just doenst look right :(

Dunno why though lol.

04 April 2004, 11:52 AM
looks good.

04 April 2004, 11:35 PM
looking really good. you might want to take another look at the collars. i feel like the shirt collar should run up and around the neck more parallel to the jacket. that is to say, the collar of the shirt should either be visible over the collar of the jacket all the way around, or look like it's just out of sight. at the moment the collar line on the shirt feels more like a tshirt with a collar and tie painted on.

04 April 2004, 01:31 AM
Almost there now.... The textures are pretty much done.
done some renders instead of viewport caps for this one - simple 3 point lighting with shadow maps.
Im gonna look at his shirt collar texture, then try and fix his shoes somehow (refmaps??), then ill start making morphs and rigging.

For the purposes of the WIP, the maps are double the resolution right now.

Thanks a lot for all the comments so far.

04 April 2004, 11:13 AM
Just been trying out polygon eyeballs as opposed to the textured ones. I now have the freedom to move his eyes around, but i think the realism is compromised.

What do you think?

I may stick with the textured eyes.
In the film, he rarely looks anywhere else other than straight ahead, and he hardly blinks! so i dont think textured eyes will be much of a problem...

04 April 2004, 11:32 AM
very nice character
you're right, the textured version looks better, but, you could try to refine the texture of the eyeball (the color and the size of the eye) I think that tweatking the texture you can achieve a result very close to the textured version

04 April 2004, 11:54 AM
This is looking really nice Andy, as for the eyes, correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the poly eyes you created with your own properties, that is, your own spec and colors. If that is the case, it might be best to use the poly eye geometry and just apply the old eyes texture to them, sorry if I'm stating the obvious. Otherwise I would just stick with the textured eyes, they look closer to the character.

04 April 2004, 03:56 PM
Ive been working on some mouth morphs for ermey...
Not sure on how many to make, I thought id just do some face expressions, though I would like to do some lip synching animation later.

Rigging is next!

04 April 2004, 05:03 PM
Looking great man, teeth could use a little work tho, at the moment I just think the snarl with teeth closed looks a little off.

Great work so far tho, cant wait to see it properly rigged.

04 April 2004, 08:11 PM
I think this looks really nice. I too like the texture eyes better since they seem to have a nicer ...uh... texture. ;P

good work!

04 April 2004, 01:00 AM
Added a bumpmap to it, and it really gives it some oomph!
Did a quick pose - it doesnt really show off the rig but ermey has limited movement in the film anyway.
Simple lighting - 1 spot with shadow maps, 1 directional light.

Time to give it a rest until happosai announces the final posting requirements, and opens the thread.

Hope y'all like it.

04 April 2004, 03:35 AM
Yeah, that's him alright!

04 April 2004, 08:01 AM
Great job! I like both, the model and the textures. Maybe the textured eyes look better and you can safe those extra polys of the eyeballs and use them elsewhere (perhaps the heat pin?). You can also rework a bit the boot texture. Apart from that it looks very nice! Pretty cool face expressions too.

04 April 2004, 08:45 AM
the shoes need some more love i think.

04 April 2004, 09:48 AM
turned out great!

04 April 2004, 12:55 PM
omg ! exellent stuff ! The textured eye version works better for me too :) I really love the face :)

/me wants more beaute renders !

04 April 2004, 03:11 PM
i dig it, yea doin "live eyes" is tough, i always have a problem with that, textures look great, skin under his neck may look a little to wrinkled, but its all good. the pose is givin me the feelin that if you took his walker away. gunny is a mean sob, and i think that his legs would be more stright, and he would be more inyour face, MAGOT! nice job

04 April 2004, 05:45 PM
Thanks for all the comments

Just to clarify something, he's meant to be in this pose:

Its from the bit at the start when pvt Joker pisses him off!
"Nobody said it, huh??? The fairy F**king godmother said it???"

Ill do some more poses as soon as i get time, and i know the final requirements for posting renders.

04 April 2004, 05:08 AM
Hey Andy, man, i really missed this thread... dunno how.

Oh well, in page 1 when everyone was saying it looked like George Bush, well i was gonna say, "because he's not scowling".... well since you morphed the face, now it looks fine.

I really like it, except the shoes. But that was mentioned already.
I would still like to see a little more contrast and dropping of the overall brightness of the face (unless it's just my monitor) right now it looks a little washed out.

Uh, and I would also recommend a different pose. Possibly the images you first posted, of him pointing or yelling (he MUST be yelling in the end). Right now in that pose, it looks like he belongs in a retirement home and about to crap his pants.

04 April 2004, 02:25 PM
sweeeeet ... very well done m8 :)

but ... Iīll have to kill you if you donīt post the final tex flats :D

04 April 2004, 12:58 AM
Thanks for y'all comments :D

I agree with the shoe based lameness, Ill have a go at fixing it later.
In the meantime, Ive done some more poses. If there are any bad things about them, let me know before i submit the final renders! I did do a closeup of him pointing, but I dont think ill use them as the textures looked a bit naff close up (256X256? boooo!)
By the way, Prs-Phil, no need for unneccesary murder, heres the textures too!

Hope these pesky image links get fixed soon!

04 April 2004, 10:21 AM
No replies?
Im thinking that the picture link problem, and the fact that the forum has moved is resulting in much less views.
Either that, or cos its easter, and people have lives to live... :hmm:
Im gonna try and get the competition on front page to pull in some more viewers - the deadline is up soon anyway, and i think the finished models would be good for people to see.

04 April 2004, 12:01 PM
GJ

I like the 1st and 3rd shot in that last render they look just righe, but the 2nd and 4th dont look like him to me >_<

04 April 2004, 06:39 PM
I think he looks great. The expressions finished him off nicely. If anything, I'd get rid of the shadow on the side of his nose.

04 April 2004, 06:44 PM
"Listen up you maggots that is one fine looking jarhead!"

Seriously looks pretty good.. Although he looks a little bit different than when I last watched Full Metal Jacket which was recently.. at any rate it's definately him.

04 April 2004, 12:45 PM
Ive done the beauty render!
Its pretty simple stuff, just a still from the film with ermey hidden and this poly pose put in his place.
Theres a bit of photoshopping here and there to smooth it off and some noise added to make it blend in with the background.

So thats it - im done! nowt else left to do but wait til the submission date. Best of luck to everyone else in getting them finished.

Glad to see the images show properly now - if only i could get the games comp plugged on frontpage - ive sent emails to 2 moderators already!

04 April 2004, 11:45 PM
correct me if I'm wrong but I thought you were only allowed 1 512*512 and 1 256*256

04 April 2004, 12:01 AM
Thats what i used - it also allows a bump, spec or alpha map as well - check the texture bit on the rules.

04 April 2004, 12:29 AM
it's a little confusing how it's stated. thanks for clearing that up

04 April 2004, 10:01 PM
Hah that's awesome.

04 April 2004, 01:18 AM
good job again man.

Might i suggest you pinch up the edges of the lips a bit. Bring the top lip closer to the bottom lip at the mouth ends, b/c right now it looks a bit cartooney.... too circular of an opening.

04 April 2004, 06:35 AM
And the winner is...

04 April 2004, 01:09 PM
cheers man; that's looking awesome. The face is excellent.

04 April 2004, 08:26 PM
I think this is the most impressive real time model I have seen...ever! The beauty render is strikingly real, and the only thing that instantly gives it away is the fingers. But that cnat be helped. Super stuff!

04 April 2004, 10:21 PM
Aww shucks, thanks!

I agree with the fingers - hands have always been a weak point of mine - thats why i had to blur the hand for that render -
umm.... it also doubles up as a rather nifty depth of field effect ;)

04 April 2004, 12:19 AM
No question a great model. And since I didn't finish my entry, I realize I have no right to criticise yours. My only complaint is that while it looks great, it doesn't look like R Lee to me, but rather just an old craggy marine. A superbly rendered old craggy marine.

04 April 2004, 01:00 AM
Feels a tad odd commenting on the compotition, dont want to sound all sour-grapey,

so good stuff first...

The head texture is really very good, nicely detailed given the size,
the body texture is also quality, and works well

on to the crit...

mainly the mesh, a number of areas could be simplified with very little effect on the over all look, mainly these are in the face and hat, also the jacket collar and buckle maybe.

The polys in the shoes could be used better, and some more shapeing on the thumb would help to.

Having said all that, it's still really good.
