Darion D'Anjou has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.

hmm, i suppose i'll see if i can sketch up a few ideas in 2D first before i go ahead join the 3D part of the challenge.
My first idea is Superstar Creators. Entertainment industry in the sinfully luxurious first world has grown? to the point that Superstar Creators are linked into a chain of people's brains as render engines to power full-immersion 24-hour realtime entertainment which in turn entertains those very same masses.
The people are all emaciated while the entertainers, descendants of 3D artists like us (of course), are healthy beautiful and spectacular.
...not sure about this one though. i fear a sort of matrix backlash

Here is a first series of sketches. Very, very rough:
In those little cubicles are heads which will have little tiny bodies.
In this first version the hair is supposed to be fiber optic strands which trail to the floor thereby linking her to the render farm.
Superstar Entertainer is a 24-7 walking full immersion reality show. She's surrounded by suspended cameras which constantly float around her. Powered by a render farm of people's brains. While at the same time these same folks who power the show...are entertained by it.
Trying to find a way to get her more integrated with the render farm.

A few other ideas:
Lego People - You can readily exchange your own body parts at the machine in the wall, just as easily as you buy a coke today
Poor guy's only function is to use his brain as a computer processor.
But even Computer Chip People can find love.
03-19-2004, 02:28 PM
This last sketch starts to take the idea of the Computer Chip People and mix it with the Superstar Entertainer concept by having the Computer Chip Dudes as the rendering engine to power this 24-7-365 Full Immersion reality show:

nive concepts... love the sensual one..
03-19-2004, 06:55 PM
thanks keltuzar! i still plan to do a lot of reworking of the pose (later on) to capture a sort of vulgar extreme egoistic sort of feel. the whole idea is to satirize this britney spears/christina aguilera/lil' kim/janet jackson hyper-entertainer era we've got going on right now.
here's another sketch:
Now she's linked into the render farm with a new invention of mine: FIBER OPTIC FLUID. So the data that's being recorded and crunched by the render factory dudes is transmitted back and forth through a sort of glowing fiber optic fluid which flows through the crevices of the coputer chips and links them all and her together. thus, she can move around freely without ever being delinked from her render engine.
still playing around with the position of things and trying to communicate the concept.
Also new in this pic is the projector in the background which is also linked into the "light juice" and making that giant projection behind her. I'm hoping the projection of her image will sort of make it more clear that her purpose is as an entertainer - but i could use more ideas on how to communicate this more clearly.

oooo digital chick plugged into network....:buttrock:
03-20-2004, 08:47 AM
i slept and i woke up, so here's another composition entirely:
With this one I'm happier with her level of integration into the network of human render chips.
03-20-2004, 01:22 PM
Darion! Wow, you're really active in this thing.
You've got a lot of Brill ideas. I wanna join to but first you have to tell me how my photoshop is! ;)
03-20-2004, 03:24 PM
Hey Steff! you're back to CGTalk...great! Yeah, there's a Wacom Cintiq at stake here so I've got to get the spice flowing with some really rough sketches. They may not look like much now, but I'd rather keep them ugly and flowing fast then beautiful without the juice flowing.
you're photoshop is great! you need to get into the challenge, it'll motivate you to do more of it...
03-20-2004, 07:34 PM
Many many idea, that's great.
Can you put few colors in the sketch you shoose. It's just to feel the light environnement.
Good luck guy.
Make sure you submit your images here. (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/machineflesh/submit_entry.php)
Entries not submitted though the CGNetworks system will not be judged.
Entries submitted to CGNetworks will automatically show in your thread, along with any comments you include.

Now we're making a little progress: See image in next post (image edited out - no need to have double image posts...)
I guess I'll go ahead and submit this one as an early concept sketch.
03-21-2004, 11:30 AM
This is still a very early concept sketch. Most likely I will stay roughly with this composition, that's why I've submitted it as a milestone.
03-21-2004, 01:26 PM
great concepts. strange ideas.
keep em coming.
that last image looks really cool
03-22-2004, 11:38 AM
Thanks Cullen. More to Come.
My theme song while working on this concept is Britney Spears' Toxic. Seems be-fitting of the "Hyper-Entertainment Era"
03-22-2004, 12:52 PM
If i got it right then humans give her the power to exist (the renderpower) and want her to go on since she entertains them.
Imho the idea that humans are linked to her isn't very clear yet. Well such abstract concepts are kind of hard ;)
What about a composition where people are sitting behind a huge screen with her on the screen while their brains are wired to modules, and then you see her on the screen in her cyberspace where faces of all the people that give her brainpower appear. Just an idea maybe it helps you :)
03-22-2004, 06:28 PM
jawine - yes, you've got it! that's it exactly...it's a symbiotic relationship which I also agree needs to be brought out more.
I'm working on a version right now which hopefully brings out this detail more where you'll be able to see that the fiber optic strands of her hair flow into the grooves of the computer chips. Right now this is not very clear because I haven't spent any time on the computer chip detail yet.
I did come up with some ideas for a name!
S.H.E. - "Symbiotic Hyper Entertainer"
H.E.R. - "Hyper-Entertainment Renderer"
What do you think?
03-23-2004, 11:01 AM
Still working on the details of those chip guys, so that update is still to come, but here's a slight re-work of the composition - just adjusting the size and position of things to make the main character more prominent:
I'm just kind of anal about getting the composition down 100% before I get myself too bogged down into details - 'cause I know once I go into details I might not ever come back out...
03-23-2004, 12:38 PM
ok, the send/receive fiber optic hair split i gave her made me think of tossing up a couple other quick composition ideas:
she's in between two walls of these render chips converging at infinity in the middle of the pic behind her. i like the second one a lot because it would allow me to focus more attention on her, but i can't think of how i would get the floating camera into the composition.
03-24-2004, 04:51 PM
i see a falling girl, i think, ghost in the shell.......
what will it be ,what will it be ? :D
03-24-2004, 05:26 PM
wOw ! You've got plenty of ideas !
As i said before, you surely have a brain enhancement, or a frog in it ;)
03-26-2004, 08:51 AM
Digital B.I.T.C.H. "Batch Interactive Thru-Connected Hyper-entertainer"
Very slowly beginning to add some details.
03-27-2004, 01:18 PM
Here's the beginning of the detailed concept sketch for Computer Chip Guy.
As you can see here his body's been custom-fitted into a 1x1 layout with his brain as the engine for this computer chip. His appendages are all smaller and insignificant, in fact only reminiscent vestiges of his historical upright stature as a walking human.
This is meant to be the 2D orthographic view which I will manipulate perspective on and use to line the walls of the render factory that powers Digital B.I.T.C.H. once i've finished adding all the computer chip details.
03-27-2004, 10:24 PM
Details added to Computer Chip Guy. I think I can start playing around with colors and texture on him now.
03-28-2004, 01:19 PM
Just quickly trying out an overall color look for the Computer Chip Guy.
The base plate of the Computer Chip is supposed to look a bit like stone, so I whipped up a Rock texture on a sphere in Maya and converted it to file to get a stone look in Photoshop.
03-29-2004, 03:44 PM
gonna go ahead and start mocking up this computer chip dude in 3D, 'cause there's no way i'm going to get the perspective right on those hundreds of computer chip dudes otherwise.
Plus I've got another concept sketch coming with better details and hopefully a more dynamic pose to show that she's an entertainer.

*jealous of how active you can get when it's competition time*
Thanks how youre always replying, Darion! That makes me so happy!
I see youre working so hard on this, and it's looking good! :)
See you at school? Natasja said she might come over, but she doesn't know the way to the new location- so maybe not.

Hi Darion(aka Quizboy)
You're doing a great job, i like your idea a lot and looking forward to see your entry finished.
05-03-2004, 01:06 PM
Is there more to come?
05-03-2004, 01:48 PM

There's a long time we haven't see any update?
Do you leave the contest? What's up?
Hope you don't
