Hey everyone,

This is definately a tough challenge. Its hard to come up with something that hasnt been done before, or something too cliche.

Anyways, heres what I have been thinking about. Still thinking of ideas to incorporate, but here is the initial concept.

03-20-2004, 12:31 AM
interesting so far.... will be watching for updates :)

03-20-2004, 12:52 AM
Hey thanks element,

Im just worried that this idea might now flow with the guidelines of the challange. What do you think?

03-20-2004, 01:04 AM
hiya Bartosz,

well i think it depends on the story behind it, It looks to me that there is a religious theme maybe a ritual. could it be a group that has devoted there lives to the dearly departed and for them to do there work they have modified themselves to be emortal or just to prolong there lives. They may have use medievil methods but looking at the background i see modern buildings so it is in the not to far future.

I hope that helps

03-20-2004, 01:30 AM
I like the idea. IT is looking good and I cannot wait to see the new images you will be coming up with for this. No worries Everything will come along in this and ideas will keep flowing, it will match with the criteria if it does not yet ( I think it does very icely though :)
I just have a suggestion. I know this is a sketch but for the backgroudn I think that you should have some more advanced skyscrapers..personally I think of robots as a future thing. I dont know if that is what they are asking from this contest. But when I see robots I think future with different buioldings. Just a thought.
Great idea!

Keep working it is going to be interesting to see this progress

03-20-2004, 01:57 AM
Well I was thinking its more like a play on the Deposition of Christ.

Ive worked on the sketch a bit more. Havent had much time recently to get any serious work done on it, but here is what I have now.

Some more refining and ideas in this one.

I added some colour to get a better feel for the composition.

03-20-2004, 10:53 AM
looking good dude...:)

03-20-2004, 04:12 PM

I actually wanted to reply here because I feel that right now your image doesn't actually quite fit with the challenge guidelines. Your image appears to show a number of robots removing a person from a cross. The challenge is about machinery merging with flesh - this means no pure robots. I struggle to find how it is that you plan to implement the concept of a "mechanically enhanced character" into your scene.

Please clarify. I would suggest that you re-read the challenge rules and guidelines to ensure that you proceed on the right track :)

03-20-2004, 04:57 PM
I would have agreed with Leigh's comment a while ago, but then I saw the 'pinkish' colour that suggests some flesh on the heads of the 'robots'. However, it is not that obvious enough, and it look just like another of those 'Terminators' that the organisers are tired of looking at already.

So, please do be careful with the concept.

03-20-2004, 07:43 PM
My idea was to have humans with mechanically enginered limbs taking Christ down from the cross. The story behind it is that if Christ would have come in lets say, 3000AD, the people taking him down from the cross wouldnt be the same as in AD33.

Just my thought.

Ok so I took your concerns into consideration and re-worked my ideas. I did a rough sketch to get it down, what you think?

03-21-2004, 12:28 AM
Damnit, no... Im deciding to re-work my whole idea, but keep it epic like the deposition image. I want to really intergrate the mechanism into the body, and I think I got an idea. Sketch will come soon.

Here is that rough sketch after I worked on it a bit more. Got all the details I wanted to get in.

Here is the same concept, but with I changed the bottom half, and altered what is coming out from his pant legs. I think now it looks more like a torture scene, which is what I wanted.

03-21-2004, 05:18 AM
found ya:thumbsup:
The cross guy looks like it would be a better idea,
the one with the main body actually on the cross .
Then you could have some real brassy gold internals
glowing outward?
Make the cross mech and part of his arms and feet joined up?
i think second pic is little vague on the mech theme for now, but you are still developing stuff up sooo........
catchya later

Some more refined ideas on the illustration. On the left wall there is going to be a mechancial contraption that is attached to the tubes. Stay tuned.

Added a few mor elements to this scene. More to come soon.

03-22-2004, 05:49 PM
I know alot of people have been telling me this doesnt match the idea of the challenge, and that my image and design do not have a "function" or "purpose", but I just wanted to say that my work is always very surrealistic and symbolic. I firmly stand behind my philosophy that art should stand by istelf, without any explanation from the artist what-so-ever. It is the artists job to create the work, and the viewers job to figure it out.

Added even more elements. Still need to work on the right side of the image.

03-22-2004, 07:40 PM
There is something different here. It is thought provoking with all the machines and location. I like it. It seems you have a story here with the technology stretching out of the flesh. The character seems to be reaching for nature or becoming one with it, but technology is steadily pulling him back. It's like a tug of war between mankind and God. Plus, the sickle usually represents death. Maybe you could use more iconography like the crucifix on the wall when you started. So far, it looks interesting. Maybe you could define the flesh a little more., but it's definitely different, and I think that counts for a whole lot.

03-22-2004, 11:06 PM
Hey Hydrophobic,

Thanks for your comments. You pretty much got it dead on. Its supposed to be a kind of torture, with the idea being much like you described it. Im glad you tink I should use iconology like the crucifix, because I took it out considering the whole religious theme wasn't working out for me earlier. I will try to see if I can incorporate it back into the piece, but right now im focusing heavily on the mechanical elements.

Thanks again for your comments,

That's a lot of work!

I wonder how it will end with colors

Til now, remembers me Gustavo Doré

good luck!

Here is another update. It should be looking more recognizable as to what the function of the contraption is. Any ideas?

good sublims.
90/ out of a 100 will never see it if its in black and white
gonna color it?

03-24-2004, 02:11 PM
Nice... I like it in black and white. It reminds me of very old book illustrations. Maybe you shouldn´t color it?

Mabe those vertical "pipes" on your machine could hold (what on earth are those in english?!?) prayer mills. You know those loose pilars in Tibetan temples, which have prayers engraved in them, and when you roll them, the prayers are kind of read or flown to the gods. Then it could be an automated praying machine, which could fit the kind of a religious theme you have.

Maybe it's an absolution machine.

03-24-2004, 10:32 PM
Yes the image will definately be in colour. I will be getting to the colouring stage soon, but there is still quite a few more things I would like to add to the image.

What im tring to do is a kind of scene where everyone is dependant on one another. The machine feeds from the tree, the human feeds from the machine, and the tree feeds from the human. Or, it can be the other way, where the human feeds from the tree, the machine feeds from the human, and then the tree feeds from the machine. Its almost like a circle of dependance.

03-24-2004, 10:51 PM
oh i really like this ! incredible style , i want to see more !

03-24-2004, 10:56 PM
such great idea. It's very original and deep.

I can't wait to see more :buttrock:

I did some updates on the mechanism, and also started to play around with colour, just to get a sense of how things will look. Any comments are welcome.

No crits at all... love it:thumbsup:

Good colorchoice, gives it the feel of an old print...

03-25-2004, 04:46 PM
I like it so much!:bounce:

IMHO...The color brings to life the scene :arteest:

03-25-2004, 09:16 PM
Im glad you guys like the colour. Im still debating whether or not the yellowish colour of the clouds is suitable. Althought any other colour would start making the piece look a little messy. Maybe I should subdue the yellow hue a bit? Im also going to smooth out the clouds, make them more "fluffy".

Took away the colour for now, as it was just a test anyways. Ive re-arranged alot of elements and I finally think Im sticking to this layout. What else did I do... oh yah, I smoothed out the whole piece, to make it easier on the eyes and to also get it ready for the base colour. I Smoothed out some aspects, and added a bit of depth-of-field.

Greater contrast and more saturation. Which one works better?
