my signature like many of us ?
03-24-2004, 08:12 AM
There's a real nice feel to the last image of the face.
It certainly sits with the machineflesh theme!!
I like the second ink, too. Loadsa detail!! Did you ever do a colour version to make more 'sense' of the inks?
03-24-2004, 09:30 AM
I work now more with colors,
10 years ago i only worked use china ink
it's why i push myself to wroke with colors.
on my website i updated last night i show
old and niewest works.
it's a long long time i'm in the cybernetic
delirium And it's a friend ( ;) ) who talk me about this contest saying
"it's written for you ! go"
So it's why i'm there. To push myself like i never pushed before.
After the challenge i'll work on an illustration i have done some months ago
illustrating that the MachineFlesh Contest make me very happy !!!
I devote all my spare time in it
03-24-2004, 12:07 PM
Celtibernetique warrior in a lab.

03-24-2004, 11:04 PM
It would seem that an old civilization
with Celtic tendency began the space
conquest with a technology already combining
mechanics and electronics with the human body.
A body was found during archaeological excavations,
it will call in question all our current knowledge.

You would not be by chance the nova of CFSL? Thank you for the compliments:) I work hard for this contest, it is the first in which I really take part. I in any case hope for that work that I will expose here will like, it is a true passion. It is very filling with enthusiasm to take part. There is enormously cynergie, that made hot here in the heart.
03-26-2004, 12:24 PM
It reminds me gimenez a little bit, sorry couldnt resist. Why not bring a touch of humour instead of following the classical SF background path. I am saying this because your third ink sketch ( first page ) has this feeling and a unique style. This would be very cool.
Anyway keep it up, and good luck!
03-26-2004, 12:34 PM
Wow, great work! i really want see more
03-26-2004, 10:01 PM

03-27-2004, 01:13 AM
Always working on the concept.
I develop the design of the main character. Celtic by some graphism,
03-27-2004, 01:26 AM
I'll try to follow your suggestions.

Thanks a lot !
Sorry to every body for not being in a
Hurry to post 3D...
The development of the concept is to
I want to show that the mechanics and
the micromechanics pushed with their
paroxism, more over melt with the flesh
makes than at one time one does not
know any more what human east or not.
Some years ago, i called my sketches
03-27-2004, 02:33 AM
Wow ! really good work...since how many years you have begin to draw ? (depuis combien de temps dessines tu?) FRENCHTOUCH
I want to see more again :bounce: :buttrock:
harnelbe,Your drawings are fantastic, great detail,I don't envy you having to model something that detailed, but with the time we have you might as well just go nuts with it!!
03-27-2004, 10:48 AM

Some mechanical' war thing I guess, reminds me of warhammer 40 000 rough style.
Well, gonna be an amazing modeling if u rock as much as in paper concept.
03-27-2004, 04:17 PM
Update of the concept design.
View from some elements of the body.
03-27-2004, 04:39 PM
holy shit thats amazing:drool:
how long did it take you to draw al these supercomplex scetches
did you do similar works bevor? id love to have a look on them, please. cant get enough from that style:beer:
03-27-2004, 05:43 PM
Great concepts, hope you modell even better!
03-27-2004, 06:13 PM
It take me between 1 and 2 hours
for the carbon scketche and
betwin 5 and 10 hours for the line into photoshop.
I didn't count detaily.
It's a long time i draw things like that,
you can check it on my website.
Thanks for your remarks.
If you want more explanation about the
concept read all the topic with the
comments i attached to the last images.
By the way i put notes with each sketches
visit this link to see entirely all the sketches of each challenger

oui... y en a qui disent que je suis
Yesss !! you 're right ! i forgotten the nuts !! i 'll fix that :)
It's a long time i draw, but i really began seriously in 1990's date i integrate an art school in brittany,
Brest (29) France with the Design Option.
I think of managing not too badly in modeling, I will post soon modelings
03-27-2004, 06:16 PM
Wow. Amazing details in this design :surprised . And your line Technique is very good.
Just a crit: it's hard to say for the moment if the amount of detail will not kill the lisibility. For sure, it's a style, but I remember some works from other artist wich have so much details, that at last, you don't understand anything.
With shadows and maps, it will surely looks different ^_^
J'adore ton design et ton style, mais je fais une fixation sur la lisibilité lol... J'espère que ce sera une remarque constructive, rassure-toi j'aime beaucoup!! ^_^
Very good work!!! :applause: Can't wait to see the next stage!! :scream:
03-27-2004, 06:39 PM
I understand what you mean, lot of people
said that about my sketches and 2D CGs.
Perhaps the 3D model will increase the
confusion...or will fix the lisibility lol
What is important to underline, is what i
want to make feel to the spectator is the fusion, the melt, even the heterogeneity
for some parts.
It's the first time i particate to a contest,
i think i 'm going to learn more things
that i ever learned since 8 years :)
I'm very happy to be there.
All the artists are impassioned, it's amazing !
03-27-2004, 07:22 PM
Psychopathe va !
That looks like a blueprint, hehe, real one!
You could consider building the dmn thing in your garage, hehe.
03-27-2004, 08:55 PM
thanks for your answer
i just went thru your 2d gallery from 1993 to 2004 and that took me some time because its so incredible huge. Your pictures are just amazing especially you recent works. I wonder why you didnt start with 3d earlier, the look of your recent works in 3d would be incredible i think. im looking forward to see every single tiny detail of your concept in 3d.  if you keep the proportins in 3d the amount of detail should be no prob i think. Keep to your style because its nice and unique.
03-27-2004, 09:45 PM
yep :) mici :)
You do not believe so well to say
I will do a model sheet or blue print
for the character
you comment is right, more i look the image i post, most i see a picture like a
blue print .
It that reinforces realism. lol
And perhaps i have already it in my
found this character gardening
In fact i model cars since a long time
for video games. And i never took time
to model one of my personnals
The moment has come i think.
Thank you for your encouragements
03-27-2004, 10:18 PM
Wow, that looks impressive for sure.
You do the line art in photoshop ?
Do I miss something ?
Cuz' IMO it would be easier to do it with a pencil on the paper and a light table^^ (but yup', I've seen your site, and after ten years, I think you know what the best technic is to do your complicated designs^^)
But as most people here, I have to say I don't really see what it exactly represents.
But yep', if it's as goo in 3D than in 2D, + lisibility, it'll rock !:buttrock:
Maybe give some more explanations, so that we could advise you more, or give you ideas (well if you need it^^)
03-28-2004, 12:20 AM
I just checked out your site. I really like your concepts, and the way you sketch!
keep it up!
03-28-2004, 02:55 AM
My computer was doing some noise while
i was sleeping and i awake...
I'll answer to commander after a night of
sleep, but crazybread if you like
the concepts check this link:

Some people are coloring some lines :)
It's very interesting. :) i was very surprised.
03-28-2004, 03:10 PM
wow those are sooo good! You are very exceptional with your line! I'm very impressed. I wonder If I could try shading one of your pieces at some point (you know just for fun) ??? :)
03-28-2004, 06:26 PM
thanks for your interest. I checked your WIPs... take my respect.
it's a familiar way, becouse I have those rotring tube pens too.
your images remind me the zapotek indian's form culture.
to your questions: I like earlier art's composition and posture style, but I made my posture from head. It was started with a few lines, just force symbols. So let me be honest I don't like to draw as well as I like sculpting. probably in the near future I will make a clay sketch of the throat controller.
till next time, please visit my new image about the neck's anathomy research - in the throat controller theme.
03-28-2004, 10:45 PM
Flesh and machine mixed as one."To exist they must co-exist" is my motto for my challenge entry..........This motto can easily be said of your concept as well harnelbe..............Details and intricate ones overlapping and blended with flesh will be quite a surrealistic creation...........Beautiful concept,in-depth details with style,my favorites aspects are all in place.I look forward to your progress, and salute the ambition you have to go with such a style and heavy detailed piece of work......I will follow and am sure to enjoy the ride,,,,,,,,,,,,,
03-28-2004, 10:59 PM
Your drawings have to be some of the best that I have ever seen befor, keep up the good work.
03-29-2004, 06:08 AM

you're right about those materials, but i waana put into some other kind too, like vulcanic stones, porcelan and glass. the contrast in choosin' of materials can be somethin' sensitive thing.

03-30-2004, 10:48 PM
Just beautiful! :) The drawing style of yours reminds me of the art what I have seen in Frank Miller's Hard Boiled comics :D Mainly because of insane detail level but there is something very similiar about your use of line. I'm curious to see what you can do with 3d.
03-30-2004, 11:57 PM
yeah, nice drawings, and concept, when you start the modeling, cant wait to see thi come to life, nice progress man keep on the good stuff:thumbsup:

03-31-2004, 10:43 AM

i want to have clean ones
It's just to relax me and have a concrete relation with which i'll modeling for the final. To test process.

Agree with you about the concept clean up, that's very imortant in my opinion too.
04-01-2004, 12:18 PM

the "blueprint link" concept.
Because at home i have only a celeron 400

Hey guys !!!
Thanks a lot for your comments !
i'm happy you like updates with "WIP GIFs"
Virtuoso thanks a lot for your compliments, it's a great honor !
Me too, i wanna see it finished, i'm actually working on "blueprints"
(cf: what have been noticed in the past messages) concept sketches.
The first one (colored ones were to have an idea of colors which will be
used) the black inked one (character laying down) is to have an overview of
how the character will pose in the final image, but it's not definitive for the moment.
Thanks ! I don't know if it's a great method but i feel it that 's the easier for me... I happy you liked "WIP GIFs"
this is maaad,totally maaad. :applause: .
cant wait for updates.inspirational detail. :)
04-03-2004, 04:02 PM

Definitly a thread I'll be following! :buttrock:
Lovin' it... great idea on the WIP gifs animations...makes sense to minimize multiple image uploads and scrollin' down...
04-03-2004, 07:36 PM
Really wild concept.love it.hope the modeling can follow.So far it's coming well.Cool wip format!:buttrock:
04-03-2004, 09:29 PM
Hmmmm, you have me dumbfounded? i dont get where any of my tribal texture has to do with anything that your modeling? And, well, ive been a tattooist for 11 years its only habit for me to tattoo anything i get my hands on I do see that your talking about following a "Celtic" type pattern "feel" to your modeling but tribal and celtic are way 2 different things. Believe me, i deal with it all day long, and well, i will and can explain to the fullest knowledge out there about the 2 and the differences and heritage that goes with both. Along with many others at that. And no, i dont think that our ideas will have the same look at all?As i said, i really dont see any resemblance at all.
04-03-2004, 09:43 PM
I was stupid to say that. :banghead:
i put so much of my own in the contest lol

ahhhh ... harnelbe..... all i can say is wow man ..... anyways cant make any critz... all i can say is sweet sweet eye candy... PFb
04-06-2004, 10:06 AM
very good modeling and sketching so far.
although the ornamental style is not what i prefere that much.
anyway the most imortant question for me is, where is human flesh, and where is machine?
i can see some wrinkles of the skin at the nose. so this must be flesh.
you mentioned, that it is part of your concept, that the borders are fluently, and should not be so clear.
its hard to understand, what special material should blend between flesh and iron or something?
if you could invent some material and explain it to us, then it could be easier to interpret your creatures look.
anyway big thumbs up for you!
04-06-2004, 12:27 PM
ooohhh:eek: , thats a nice modeling, sorry cant say nothing helpfull now cos your model simply rocks, good job, and good luck for your next steps!
04-06-2004, 09:46 PM
Update of the day, i started the brain connectors, i fixed the welding of the nose side.
04-06-2004, 09:54 PM
although the ornamental style is not what i prefere that much
lol reading at your second sentence...
I think you have not understood the concept. No problem, soon you'll understand or read the whole thread :)
Hey harnelbe, leave some space for textures, hehe;)
No kidding, thats awesome!!!
04-06-2004, 10:00 PM

There is 1 iteration more in the rendering of the wire.
Next update at midnight.

04-07-2004, 07:58 PM

really looking forward to seeing the textures!
04-07-2004, 08:05 PM
WOW :buttrock: Exellent as usual:thumbsup: What kind of textures are you planning to put on that hight quality modeling?I mean what kind of surface is it gonna be like humain skin and metal, or weird new technological material? I can't wait to see your next step :applause:
04-07-2004, 08:29 PM
You'll have to wait a little for the texturing
The modeilng of the character is just beginning. Be Patient :)
sorry for my poor english, i have understand nothing of your message
04-07-2004, 09:45 PM

04-07-2004, 11:49 PM
Just coming along smoothly..........Just fun watching this grow from the center out, seeing the details growing as if they were a flower coming into bloom..................very nice Harnelbe..............
04-08-2004, 12:52 AM
have you got plans about eyes? will they be like human eyes or somethin' like diamond, crystal or you just follow your detailed ornamentic style on them?
good rythm in forms!:wavey:
04-08-2004, 03:58 AM
I'm really speechless.. :surprised Extremely detailed modelling, can't wait to see the textures, i wouldn't want to texture it myself though.. :buttrock:
04-08-2004, 07:23 AM
Welcome in NUTSLand !
CGTALK is a good place !
i'm very happy you feel than, i think you
understand the "sensibility" i put to my work :)
It's a good question lol
The idea of the crystal is good regarding
of the background of the scene, my first idea was about to put like human form protected by a membrane hydrating the eyes which are ever opened.
i wouldn't want to texture it myself though
lol I think i 'll love that without becoming MAD :)!
04-08-2004, 09:27 AM
Oh, nice mod here too, but I do not understand the organic hierarchization in the face. All the details make me confused instead of amazed indeed..Maybe I need glasses :hmm: but that s my feeling, for the moment.
anyway, keep it up, that s the word. (yeah, now I have glasses, haha)
04-08-2004, 09:54 AM
the organic hierarchization in the face
organic lol  that's the word :)
What do you mean by:
hierarchization in the face ?
"Why can't I do that?.........sniff,sniff".....he says,weeping uncontrollably.
Im just going to sulk for a while.
Inspirational stuff, insane amount of detail, want to see more!
keep it up.
04-08-2004, 11:09 AM
let me take my glasses...
ok I m ready
Well, I don t understand what is what, what part is used for what thing and why it is plugged onto the mouth, nose, etc.
Something makes me think you do a lot of details without cautioning on the fusion between flesh and machine elements.
Perhaps this feeling will disappear with the mapping :hmm:
(I had the same feeling about the 2D concept)
04-08-2004, 11:19 AM
it's good to have differents point of view
and differents sensibilities here.
No problem about your remarks
i think you'll more understand in some days :)
i keep in mind all your remarks.
But please... read all the topic.
really good work , its better and better each day ! :buttrock:
04-08-2004, 01:54 PM
Bow to the machine God
the level of detail your modeling is insane...Wow
Consider this contest owned
04-08-2004, 04:21 PM
I read every topic I post Harnelbe, nothing changes. ;)
Your style is very diffrent from others, so it's gonna difficult to me, as a 'poor' rookie to understand what you mean. No offense, but I don't think it would be usefull to explain my life about your concept and idea, I prefer gather my crits on the mod without argue with the concept and the explaination.
Of course, I did not says it was bad, far from that lol...really good work man, let's rock, I keep an eye on it !
04-08-2004, 05:13 PM
Yeah its very artistic , very impressive , but what made my jaw go to the ground are thouse naquim paints . damnnnnn
04-08-2004, 09:01 PM
OOO AAA AHAHA :applause: Great work so far ;) Keep modeling!
04-08-2004, 09:02 PM
Hey ! thanks dude !!
your concept is interesting !
keep it up !
Thanks for your words !
Sorry for my "frenglish"
What do you mean about:
naquim paints ?
Thanks, i don't give up :) lol
=Update of the day at midnight :)=
Very impressive work man , keep going :buttrock: is looking great
04-09-2004, 12:08 AM
Modeling to be continued :) lol
As promised... 2 hours later lol

it's to much faces consumers. i'll optimze
I hope you'll like his face... :)
04-09-2004, 01:10 AM
Yeah! Lot of details my friend :buttrock:
Looking forward to see the entire scene finished :applause:
04-09-2004, 01:25 AM
this is insane, how can i compete with that great modeling, if u hear i suicide is all your fault!; just kiddin, i want to but my parents get very angry if i do so... ( i better continue with my sh**)
great job , i love those tubes in the head, stunning detail, u r rocking!!
04-09-2004, 06:52 AM
That is getting impressive Nono!
It gives me a headache when I wonder how you're gonna texturize all this :argh:
Incredible work! I love the shapes on the top of his head.
One thing though: I think you should fix the round shape on his forehead. It's kind of "broken" at the top, but it seems to me that is HAS to be a perfect circle...
Anyways, your concept and this work, and your mood in your posts is a plus for this contest. Good job man!
04-09-2004, 07:11 AM
Thanks for your remark and encouragments, i noticed it, i'll fix
that in the next update, the round is deformed because of a FFD box i used modifying the forehead, and because of
the Instance Mirror use it make appear edges.
About the texturing, mhh it seems that your are a lot to be afraid by the mapping work on this type of modeling, i'll test that next week LOL :)
hey ! i don't want to be a guilty of a suicide ! it's not my goal lol!
about the tubes of the upper, i'll not keep them, they look more than cables in the final they will have the same look as the tubes on the nose.
Thanks for your encouragments !
i'm also looking forward to the same thing about your GREAT Stuff Dude !
04-09-2004, 08:31 AM
Oh crikey! I don't know if or why not I have not checked your thread out before... um... but this is excellent fleshmachinery... almost the best I've seen without a doubt. And those concepts on the first few pages... Magnifico! Splendid! Bastard! :D

04-10-2004, 12:33 AM

You know maybe I can cook for you, or maybe iron some clothes or something while you're working on it!
04-11-2004, 09:10 AM

Yes it take time to do it but not too much, what it's interesting in doing that is to realize what have been necessary or not in the process of modeling. It allow post-analyses.
i'm happy all this stuff is inspiring.
i'm happy all the stuffs done by eachothers is inspiring everybody.
will you use proxys via lighting period? I'm curious about your timing. I hope you can keep this tempo and finish the model in time.

I don't know if the concepts are very clever but it's a long time now i have some things like that in my head i wanted to put in 3D. It's a friend "Viag (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=130401&perpage=15&pagenumber=5)" who pushed me to participate, it's a great honor to share idea there.

We have to discuss it after this challenge.
WIPGIF STICKERS. Patent pending...:buttrock:
new helmet elements are quite good in modeling. Do you know what I like in your style? Your method, I mean when you do something with computer it's looks like it was made by hand.
Not as the fake or photo style. These are like "digital pottery".
At first sight I was told in myself: your drawigs will be far from the exact models...and now. Nothing is impossible!
Keep this job:bounce:

 The modeling is going really well, :)
Looking everyday for the wipgifs :D they are a awesome way to share your knowledge, i really apreciate it, i like the tribal look and harmonic chaos of shapes, this needs a great artisitic sense, you do have :)

 That's PHat!!!!
One little thing I have not noticed before- I do not know if his eyes are going to be real or not. I think it would be cool if they where real but enhanced- with your kind of detailed modeling it would be soo cool if under the glassy surface of the eye, the pupil would have some cybernetic artifacts. In this case the eyes need a more spheric look and feel, in a way where they dissapear under the the mechanical eye lids....

Big Up too !
lol lol no problem i'll think about the patent ^_^!!! Thanks alot for your compliment! This "qualities" you're talking about are justified by the fact that elements are forged, sculpted insert in body by hands of people of ancient times. Thanks to have noticed that.
Celtic or mayan, you're right it's an ancient civilization ^_^
Thanks, happy to know that ancient artisans have done a good stuff ^_^
happy to know that i'll be a source of inspiration like other stuff in cgtalk inspire me !

A Celeron 400!? No worry, come July you might have a brand new high-end computer! :bounce:
That image is marvellous, by the way!

Thats unbelievable, keep up the awesome work bud.
04-19-2004, 06:09 AM
Har har har... nice to see another low-tech Celeron guy.... I hope you have something else to do your modeling on, and that the 400 is only a renderslave.... Would be painful to move all those polys around otherwise :argh:

I have been using a PII 350 till december and it sucks!... I can't believe U are making such a beatiful piece of art in that machine! :buttrock:
04-19-2004, 09:58 PM
Goes to show its the person behind the machine that matters. Excellent detail and a very interesting thread to follow. Keep em coming
04-19-2004, 11:52 PM
Damn, can't believe I missed this thread till now. Soe very interesting work going on. Looks to be inspired by some sort of tribal design. A nice angle =) When will you be adding the flesh component?
04-20-2004, 08:26 AM
I'm glad to have new messages from new visitors and accustomed lol
Ionized Peter C.
The characteristics of my concept is not a surprise but it it will be understanding when materials will arrive :D But not before the modeling finished :)
As well visible as invisible one because of default materials
most of parts have been really modeled with my faithful Celeron 400 and a QuadroEX and some others with a Athlon XP 1800+ and Geforce3 lol
In fact the wire is heavier than shaded, it's why when i assemble elements i display all in shaded there is no painfull lag.

thanks a lot for encouragments !
