View Full Version : Machineflesh 3D Challenge Entry: cláudio jordão do carmo viegas

03 March 2004, 10:01 AM
cláudio jordão do carmo viegas has entered the Machineflesh 3D Challenge.

03 March 2004, 10:29 AM
I've got to start thinking on something... all my ideas seems to vanishing the moment I hit a real surface with my imaginary pen!

03 March 2004, 10:38 AM
Cool to see you're entering, Cláudio - the whole pack is back!

Oh, and try a real pen on an imaginary surface, might work uh... differently.

03 March 2004, 12:25 PM
Hum! My friend JamesMK... I think you might have open some kind of curtain...

What if (in the future) we could "copy" and "paste" elements from the imaginary world to the real world, and vice-versa?
What if we could go back and change our reality (in the exact moment that we realise we've made the wrong decision) with some kind of "undo"?
What if we could add a script to our genetic-code enhancing our abilitys to... go on... free your mind!

I think I have a sinopse... well, it's a start!

M'yeap... I would need to have reserved system resources for undo history to the amount of... lets see now... about 21 years :D

I wonder how many terabytes of undo storage that would require? :hmm: And I do hope it would be a non-linear undo.

03 March 2004, 01:10 PM
Ahahah! Imagine that your all history is recorded in one very big nothing, like the sky... and the only thing you have to do to "undo"/copy and or paste, events/feelings/desires/etc... is to go to that sky and access your historial. And you do this by executing your genetic-script wich you access by simple will to do so!

03 March 2004, 10:44 PM
Hehe, good to see you're in too. Well, sounds like sum win-fiction of the dark side to me, and if u build in a "ctrl+Z" option, i wouldn't want to be in that world, haha, if you wake up and know there's a world ruled by "ctrl+alt+del".... ahrgh, nightmare... lol best luck:beer:

03 March 2004, 12:04 AM
Well, here it is... the first look of my concept.
In the future, we'll be able to "fuse" the real and the spiritual world, by accessing and controling our own xhakras.

03 March 2004, 12:08 AM (

opss... there it is... yes, I'm in the need of some ctrl-alt-del

03 March 2004, 06:31 AM
... lol... like this one? (

03 March 2004, 11:03 AM
Help, I'm going crazy here!... Is it really necessary that the alterations of our caracters must be metallic?
Can't it be extensions of their own organic form?
Can it be hooked to another liveform?
I was thinking in something with a look of Cronenberg's "existenZ"... do you think I can go that way? Help guys!

03 March 2004, 11:13 AM
the alterations should be "machinary" - but not necessarily metallic. As stated in the brief, the machine components could for instance be made out of wood.

Having said that, I'm not sure about your specific idea... Would the other organic thing have the features of a machine? If so, I guess it's OK. The term machine is pretty broad as it is.

03 March 2004, 12:33 PM
Well, I don't want to believe that we are going to "evolve" to somekind of "freaky monsters", like Ciborgs, Terminators or Transformers of any kind, that will only cause us fear or other weird sensations.
I believe that we are going to build machines that can help us, one day, to be more... human!
And problably we'll find a way to enhance our capabilities with their's, but not in a way that could destroy (with some metallic or wood things) what's most valius to us... our body.
I think that those transformations will occur in the inside, in a biological way, enhancing our habilities to speak different languages, to learn more and more about everything, to travel without moving (thanks JK) and to boldly go (thanks JIM) where no man as gone before... to our most depp conciusness of being human... and being God.
And that is why I getting mad :)

03 March 2004, 12:32 PM
Cool ideas, but they might be really hard to show in just one image/design :)

Machines don't have to be from metal, maybe another material that biological creatures know, such as the chitine from insect armours/butterfly wings would fit more with your idea of a machine that is not too technical and can integrate with the body :)

03 March 2004, 12:35 PM
Thus the philosophical question of "what exactly is a machine?" appeared on stage :D

03 March 2004, 02:35 PM
Cláudio, what i really like about your idea is the pragmatic notion that: hey, we might be improved by machines, but that doesn't mean that we want metallic skin or wires knocked in at every orifice (making it difficult to settle down and watch TV on the fav couch).

But do agree with jawine that it'll be hard to get the message across via a character still....but pls keep at would love to see you pull it off ;)

03 March 2004, 12:26 PM
Hello all. In searching for information, I found something that I think we all should read. Hope you like it.

03 March 2004, 05:17 PM
Well, I don't know if you'll find it as usefull as I did, but anyway, here it is

A little outside of the scope of machine flesh, but if you like this kind of SF, i would recommend Greg Egan's book "Permutation City" is clearly about homo machinus (or Ian Pearson got the idea from the book perhaps??).

Another marvelous idea ~
Seems interesting and cool !

03 March 2004, 11:28 AM
Yeah, maybe... I'm still kind of stucked. I'm not even sure if I'm on the right track of the challenge!

04 April 2004, 10:28 PM (

Well, I've started modeling... I'm still not sure where this is going to take me, but here I go.

This is amazingly weird stuff you're rendering... hard to come up with any comments because it's so abstract, yet not... I just have to say it's really cool, and it will be most interesting to see how everything is supposed to come together later on....

 Fascinating...

04 April 2004, 03:25 PM
I definitely like this!

I really like where you are coming from-

why does the idea of machines and flesh have to conjour up something vulgar or destructive?

It could be quite beautiful!

I believe the originators of the challenge have dropped a lot of hinted at introductory information for this challenge-

claudio_jordao , I m.... I am trying to get it.. don't know but seems mysterious... can't crit... anyway... abstract work... very powerfull...

04 April 2004, 05:56 PM
Thank you for visiting my thread Continuumx.

"I believe the originators of the challenge have dropped a lot of hinted at introductory information for this challenge"

Of course they needed to give some guidelines about what was this challenge about... but yes, I share the same opinion you have! That is why it's been so difficult for me to come out with a way to illustrate my idea... I'm still not there yet, but I'm trying... thanks!

Thanks JamesMK, your intention to comment is very welcome  I would also like to see how everything is supposed to come together later on... let's just say that I'm being taken... Anyway, thank you very much for the support, it means a lot comming from you!

Here it is again!
I remembered the times that I played with "LEGO", so I think I'm gonna play with that concept.

Bio-lego-logy... that's the final step in Human-Evolution. A stage where are no physical limitations, and where we can assume any form we like.

thanks guys... I dont have much time, but I'm trying not to give up.

05 May 2004, 06:10 PM (

There's a big one!
I guess I should submit this as a texturing milestone, but I'm still refining the modeling... the arms are not finished yet, and I will refine other parts.
Anyway... what do you think so far?

06 June 2004, 04:51 PM

I'll wait to see what comes out of this.

06 June 2004, 11:32 AM
Your concept is very original and very inspiring !!
You have a fan :) (word of the day:... i'm a fan )

06 June 2004, 09:25 AM (

Here's the first biolegologised human... I'm gonna try to do some other's... time is running out!

06 June 2004, 01:48 PM (

Adam and Eve in the Biolegological-Eden.

06 June 2004, 01:49 PM
This looks really fresh, but my only complaint is where is the flesh aspect?

06 June 2004, 02:38 PM
Yeah... I think "fresh" is the word, thanks :)
About the flesh issue... this is the flesh of the new-born, the flesh they chosse to be transformed to... it's the ultimate revolution in bio-technology.

06 June 2004, 02:15 AM
Obviously you went the different, quite freestyle
route on this. I like it very much and you have my respect.
Hell, who can say what flesh is? :D
Very refreshing if you ask me...keep it up, I would like to
see it finished....
boa sorte

06 June 2004, 09:06 AM
Hey OZ, thank you... I guess!
I was needing that. :)

EmpY... at last, someone that understands me... I think!
Who can say what flesh is?
That is the main question.

Good luck for both of you

06 June 2004, 09:11 AM (

color? no color? color? no color? color? no color? color? no color? color? no color? color? no color? color? no color? color? no color? color? no color? color? no color? color? no color? color? no color?

06 June 2004, 10:37 AM (

And now... the moment you ask:
What a f***

06 June 2004, 01:05 PM (

Here it is... not yet finished... but this is the idea.

06 June 2004, 01:00 PM (

I have no comments... no... no comments at all... yeah... that's right!... what about you?... do you have any comments about this?... well, it's not finished, I've created this background, and I think it works... but I would like you to comment... I mean, if you want to... ok, I'm gonna seat back here and wait...

06 June 2004, 01:19 PM
Well, I guess I'm missing some distraction, or better said
disruption point in your image. I kinda expect something
will pop up in the image wich will mess things just a little bit???

:hmm: ?

06 June 2004, 01:29 PM
I'm sorry EmpY, I dont think I urderstand what you said. What do you mean by "disruption point in your image"?

06 June 2004, 02:04 PM
It's hard to be concrete and explain :hmm:
I will try to ilustrate, but do not listen to me,
but folow your own instinct... :

Lets say they (your two characters) look like they
are made of some kind of flesh. Also, they seem to
be standing on the shore of the ocean (water, fluid...).
Now, the man's arm looks interesting, so I would give him
the big surfboard (in diferent shader) to hold with that hand.

Another version that comes to my mind is their pose wich
is almost perfect for both of them to be standing on one big surfboard, surfing the wave...
Where "surfboard" would represent machine part of the homework... :hmm: ???

06 June 2004, 05:14 PM
Ahhhh!!! Now I get it :) thank you.

Well, I guess it's time to explain the all idea:

This two characters are like fashion models posing to a camera... and what they are selling is a energetic drink called "Biolegology".

This Drink will reconfigure, like pieces of "LEGO", your own genetic code (DNA) enhancing your abilities to transform yourself in... whatever you want... a kind of super hero with all the powers you want.

This energetic drink is now on it's 7 version - "Biolegology 7.0" - and it's new feature is the re-activation of your chakras... in other words, it sets your spirit free from your mind.

So, in this Biolegological world, you, are all that you need... you are a physical and spiritual machine.

Yes, I guess you could say:
That's just like a drug... and a hard one!

Well... no... you can stop drinking "Biolegology" when you want, the effect of one pack last 3 days, but please, do not drink more than 5 per day... you could simply explode your mind.

Ok ok... I confess... I had 6 of these

06 June 2004, 05:19 PM (

It's almost done.

06 June 2004, 02:00 AM (

Thank you to all of you, for your support, and all those things that... blá blá blá, and blá blá blá... :)
You know!
You are the best.
I'm done for now.
Here is my final image... allow me to say that, just for the fun I had doing this... I think I've done a good job.
Good luck for all of you.
See you next time.
Have a nice...

06 June 2004, 02:49 PM
I have to say that your final is truly one of a kind! An incredibly weird design, that still makes a lot of sense somehow.... The poses and the colors are impressive, to say the least. Overall, a distinct "graphic design" feeling to it!

Great job, and kudos for sticking with this weird and original concept

06 June 2004, 03:27 PM
Hey James, thanks!
It was very hard to stick with the original concept, and there was a time that I stoped working... I was almost giving up. But I've made it.
I know that this image might not find it's place in this challenge idea... but I had fun doing it, and I've learned a few more things. That's all that counts... for now :)

And talking about weird stuff... your work is amazing my friend ;)
I like your sense of humor :)

Good luck!

Cláudio Jordão

06 June 2004, 02:11 AM
looks amazing!.... this concept is great man!... the rendering and materials look so espectacular.... this is very sweet too look at... i can buy anything ilustrated with that image so please give me one Biolegology 7.0!!! impressive work:buttrock:

Hey POX, I'm sorry for the time I took to respond to your message, I'm very busy this moment... anyway, thank you for your vote.

I'll try to find where is the image you liked and do a larger version of that.

It might take a few more days, but I will not forget!

Once more, thank you for your interest.
