Albert Feliu has entered the Machineflesh 3D Challenge.

03 March 2004, 08:27 AM
hi people!
I'll begin seriously this challenge when I finish my actual project. Actually I'm on the final stage of it, so it won't be a problem, only that making renders my computer is very slow...

Finished my introduction! I wish good luck to EVERYONE!

03 March 2004, 02:29 PM
hey, just began an sketch this morning. I never painted "brush-like" digitally, but I tried to make it clear (not good at hand-painting either). That's an idea, but, modelling, everything is much better...!!! (let's hope so!)

let me see your opinions! if you think something, write :D

the concept is a couple or 3 replies down, don't lose it :p

03 March 2004, 05:46 PM
hey, after my "no-lose-of-time" sketch, I've put 1 hour and a half to make this face. Its not finished of course...but this is a wip forum after all.

deleted to make loading faster

03 March 2004, 10:38 AM
finished symmetrical head, now going for the symmetrical body

I'm not lazy...i can answer your replies :P

03 March 2004, 10:47 AM
Talk about "time saver Joe."
Man, he doesn't even have to stop and eat!
Nice concept! Likin' the model!
Can't wait to see the mechanical parts!

03 March 2004, 11:33 AM
hey yeah, I forgot my story behind it :P but it's quite clear if you think about it.

Humanity has a lot of ways to evolve...most of people has a lot of idiot bad habits, for example, tobacco.

Imagine a world (which is not so different of us), a future world where you can implant some mechanical vital organs into your body. I'm sure a lot of people would implant a mechanical lung, or a mechanical heart, for not having problems with tobacco in the future. Then, tobacco can be smoked without remorses, and nicotine would do the rest. If you can smoke, then you smoke a lot, because it doesn't affect the most affected part; nowadays, the lungs. Then, in your free time, you want to SMOKE, and this brings a society to full addiction to tobacco. This way you don't wanna lose time eating, for example, or sleeping...

(If somebody asks: I don't smoke, i'm just making a crit of this idiot world)

The integrated mobile, shows another vice of our society. Before, nobody needed a mobile phone, and now, everybody uses it even to go to the bath. Then why do you want a vital part of you, separated from you? Attach it to your brain, and problem solved :D

I could have continued my critique with drugs, internet, messenger, money, etc. but I think tobacco and mobile phones are good enough for a society which evolves every minute, and who knows, maybe in some years they will have to make a mechanic implant to the earth, or the sun  to stop UVA rays. Well, just another kind of future.

ATTENTION: this man isn't the only who have machines implanted. In that future, everybody will have this kind of implant.

Sorry for my english, maybe you take me wrong with something, if that ocurrs, I'll try to help to undersand.

Thanks tlgp

03 March 2004, 12:06 PM
Nice idea!
I like the concept that everyone will have the IAL
to cut down on that pesky second-hand smoke!

03 March 2004, 02:11 AM (

Just an horrible sketch...but I hope you will understand what i'm going for :)

03 March 2004, 02:12 AM
ugh, sorry people, i didn't want to repeat myself...i just updated it to cgnetworks and appeared here :surprised

monday will be the real beginning of my entry.

Torso modelling

03 March 2004, 07:41 AM
Nice modeling so far man! Neat concept as well..

alot of people are going under the radar here with their great work.

03 March 2004, 09:45 AM (

keep modelling, and a shader test :)

03 March 2004, 10:15 AM
the ear needs a bit more work on it, great job on the body, keep going :)

03 March 2004, 03:37 PM (

I've just begun the pose, still a lot to do!!! :D

Today I've still an hour

03 March 2004, 03:38 PM
I have fixed the ear!!! :)

03 March 2004, 04:38 PM
well, here comes another update, this time I upload it to my free FTP server because I don't know if I can upload so much images to the cgnetworks server...and the progress isn't much...but it's the last for today!!! :D I have to go to work...and later I will go to have dinner..and later with my girlfriend, and sleep :)..

I hope you've liked the progress of today. Any comments are very appreciated. Tomorrow I'll go for the hands!!:bounce:

03 March 2004, 06:05 PM
I like his position a lot!! I think he is sexy... ;)
Go on!!

03 March 2004, 08:17 PM
Nice DDS!

The model is really cool, i think that the ears are a little strange and at this moment the pose too.... btw, the pose concept is nice but i donīt like in the last image

keep it up and good luck

p.d: nice to see u here Lara -- { Si es que fins i tot aqui ? tens algun post propi de algo fet per tu ? }

Hi Thorse! how long!
I have only posted once here! an image about mortadelo...I don't know if you had seen it before

Click here for the image (

03 March 2004, 07:41 AM (

the 2 images of the top are the ones that he will have more or less...

the others are just funny positions as I spent sometime making a fast rig hehe.

03 March 2004, 09:37 AM
hi! I managed the wrinkles of the abdomen, added a cigarrete and merged the hands with the arms.

Hope you like my progress, add some feedback please, I don't know If I'm doing the right way

03 March 2004, 10:08 AM
hi albert :)

looks really good so far ... but in the closeup the pinky looks strange somehow ... especially in the bottom left pic.
but in the final pose you can't recognize it anyway.
the body looks also good!

cheers chris

03 March 2004, 10:28 AM
hi chrischan!

thanks for your comment, but, as you said, in the final pose there's no bug on the mesh...the others were just quick tests...I won't work a lot anything useless u know..

03 March 2004, 03:54 PM (

I've modelled a leather sofa for our guy, he will be called "wagoner" from now on hehehe, I don't say it for the people who drive wagons, It comes from the expression "Fumar como un carretero" of my country (smoke like a wagoner or something similar) and it has always make me smile.

Well, the Table and the ashtray are temporal, just to test.

I'm waiting for your crits of our Wagoner!

04 April 2004, 10:38 AM
?'ve been workin' on the mobile this morning.

I see that my challenge doesn't have much expectation. I don't know if it's because I'm not good modelling my idea, or maybe because the idea isn't much original...or maybe i'm not a celebrity...but I hope you like the machinery of the lungs when I add it...and the other things.

thanks :)

04 April 2004, 04:30 PM
I accept any replies

Waiting for your comments and suggestions!!!:bounce:

thanks in advance

04 April 2004, 04:44 PM
this is my first time i visit this thread, impressive Albert, model is just more than great and the idea is brilliant, keep up,

how long has he been on this pose?

04 April 2004, 05:00 PM
thanks man!!!!!!!!!

nobody has never told me so kind words in cgtalk  (unless some friend of mine which I personally paid (joke))

Well, he has been....mmhh, he left the work at midday, and he doesn't need to eat, so he swallows a feeding pill, and spends his 1 or 2 free hours smoking, and as everyone who is sat on a sofa...he changes his position to speak with somebody or to relax another muscles...etc. :hmm:

waiting for more comments :)

04 April 2004, 09:52 PM
Very nice modelling and intresting concept!
The only crits I have so far is that I think you should make the creases on his stomach a little bigger, I think they look to tight, almost as if there wasn't enough skin on his body. And maybe, the thing on his hand is a little to big in my opinion.
Great work man! Keep it up!

04 April 2004, 10:36 PM
Keep it up !
Very cool concept and clean modeling,
the only remarks like said by
say so long

i could say for the moment is the way you
have put the pad on his left hand, it
seems streched and not very ergonomic,
perhaps you should reduce his size
Like said a friend watching at your guy
it seems that there is something strange about his left shoulder... i don't know why
but it seems that the skin should be compressed rather rather than streched
at between the arm and the shoulder.
By the way, interesting C.G. !

04 April 2004, 12:55 AM
I am loving the execution here. congratulations man.
the idea is great as well.

gonna keep both eyes on this from now on:)

04 April 2004, 10:26 AM
wooooaaah :)

Say so Long: Probably I'll make something with the creases, but I wait until I've put the IAL machinery to see what I erase and what not. The main purpose of making the body was learning some more anatomy, but, in case the creases are still there when the IAL appears, I'll fix them, sure!! About the pad, it was not still finished, but sorry, I like the size. There's a big lack of connections also...let's see the progress, maybe you like it more! My idea is to have that hand almost mechanical. Thanks man.

harnelbe: I tried to make the guy's shoulder similar to this one.
If you still think it's bad, don't worry and tell it to me. But I think it's quite similar. Thanks. Great challenge you're doing.

loganarts: thanks man! I've looked your website and what can I tell...that's amazing. I like to have a man with those texturing skills telling me what's right and what's wrong.

Thanks to all, tomorrow MORE! :bounce:

04 April 2004, 08:33 AM
hi! I've made a weird container for the IAL machinery

I tried to make it weird, but at the same time...elaborated...

I wait for all your crits!!!!!!

thanks people!!!

04 April 2004, 08:52 AM
bit of a chain smoker he is. great execution on modeling. love the mobile under skin. only one thing though......are you planning to add to the chest????(Lights and glowing elements)

Keep going mate:thumbsup:

04 April 2004, 09:00 AM
thanks :)

Yeah of course, this is the container of the Individual artifical lung, as I said on the other post. Don't worry, You'll have machinery to stop a train.

04 April 2004, 05:29 PM
hey guys! another update!!!

I'm not motivated, which lung do you like the most?

04 April 2004, 07:07 PM
I like more the one on the left, because I think it's more real than the other one.
Can you do renders with the guy with the 2 lungs?

04 April 2004, 08:05 AM
hi Lara,
here you have the renders you wanted, the second one is with default ilumination, because my temporal 3 point lighting didn't let me see a thing inside the chest.

The first one has a breastbone, and some metallic ribs, but I erased it on the second one...I don't like it, and the metallic estructure of the chest (metallic cables) already holds that zone.

04 April 2004, 12:47 PM
I think this is the only thread updated daily without replies :bounce:

another update...I'll post it through cgnetworks, so it's on the next post.

thanks in advance :)

04 April 2004, 12:49 PM (

everything on modelling stage.

everything in temporal textures, just to try colors and so...

the man has NO texture, except a noise bump mapping, for the moment of course!

04 April 2004, 12:59 PM
lol, i've just realized that i was alking about your right arm and not the left one lol
i'll try to do a sketch to explain more the problem i see.
Amazing details !

04 April 2004, 01:35 PM
thanks harnelbe!!

I'd appreciate that sketch a lot man!!

your thread is awesome, keep it up.

04 April 2004, 07:29 AM

I've returned...

Just made an fast sketch of a vehicle that will be flying over the city of the background! It will have an advertisment, to understand more the pill compartment I just modelled at the shoulder (and that you have not seen yet, but it's a very little thing for an update).

The advertisment will be like "feeding pills: why do you want to lose time eating, if you can smoke (and you want)" or something like that.

thanks! bye

04 April 2004, 08:27 AM
Cool, really Cyberpunk (cellular phone into the head hahaha)
well, I m not fan of the thoracic' implant.

Shader are good, I like the armchair color. Really cool :hmm:

04 April 2004, 09:35 AM
hey, your modeling is going really nice and the concept looks good too, and about the lungs u created i like more the accordeon one, sorry Lara, amazing detail on the hands, thats an all pro job man! keep on the nice, crazy and hard work man, your doing a nice challenge:thumbsup:

04 April 2004, 08:28 AM
Grorum: I hope you will like it more with a progress!! Thanks :)
rattlesnake: Thanks man! Your challenge is going really good too!

the model!

04 April 2004, 08:43 AM
Hey DDS .... Crazy man this is Crazy.... man you have made great progression... yeah i agree with lara the lung on the left best suits you're model me thinks.... and i really like the way you strech the skin around certain areas....the pill feeder rocks aswell

keep up the sweet wotk man....

04 April 2004, 04:19 PM
ParadiseFlyBird: thanks for your kind words :)

I'm making some final touchings to the modelling, I want to begin to paint textures  but first I've to finish the model .

bye friends!

04 April 2004, 04:54 PM
Just began texturing the face. I've textured diffuse, bump, and self ilum (for the light)

04 April 2004, 09:36 PM
hey, themapping coordinates look good, you have to consider letting the map as it is! looks really interesting!:D , just kidding, your job is going great man, ill be tuned to see more!good luck!

04 April 2004, 10:53 AM
Thanks rattlesnake, I think that a red&yellow square tile will fit more :buttrock:

hi! another update. I have looked a simple tutorial about making hair with particle flow, and I tried the technique with my character, since plane mapping modelling is a little boring, and shag hair is something that I wont use anymore ('cause it's a pathetic plugin, it crashes in most of the renders with a lot of hair).

I've not worked a lot on it, because I had in mind making something like dead hair strands or something a little weird (as everything in this still)

and the tutorial if you liked how the hair looked like:

if you don't like the hair, write a reply please

04 April 2004, 11:05 PM
hi, almost finished texturing him, and general tweaking to everything. Today has been a hard day.

Pleaseeee tell me your suggestions

Tomorrow more :buttrock:

04 April 2004, 08:51 AM
Hey I love the background, I thought you would put a dark and dirty background, but this is better!
Will u do some buildings behind the man?

About the man, I like the texture. I think the parts of the skin that are more white (because it has benn ripped out) are good.
I don't like the hair at all. I think it's real, but I don't like the way that u have put it, it seems like if it is covering the bald part, and I think it's ugly... I prerered it without hair. (I like the back part of the hair).
Well, I'm looking forward for more updates!!

(k) ;)

04 April 2004, 09:18 AM
hi Lara!

First of all, thanks for the comment.

I will put a background of Bladerunner style. Like when Harrisson Ford goes to that building with an owl that goes from 1 side to another. It will be a sunset, this is a temp background of course, I don't like real photos merged with this scene.

If somebody has any idea on builiding designs, and wants to share it with me, it's very welcome!!!

I'm working on a new hair style.

New update soon!!

04 April 2004, 03:32 PM (

Hi! just begun the texturing process of all, and how not, I have to begin from the guy, which I have already finished texturing.

The background is temp.

04 April 2004, 11:31 AM
I see that you don't like my work

No replies

A little update, I post the URL because the page is quite long...

04 April 2004, 11:44 AM
Now I like a lot the hair, yeah!! I think teh man is better wiht the 2 lungs, good idea. Lovely texture!!
I don't understand why nobody answers to you... :/
I see people is strange here...
Good work man!!

04 April 2004, 11:58 AM
Really great your rendering of lights and materials !!
Lot of details like the light of the phone pad through the skin ^_^, diodes light inside the body !
i have been noticed some things which disturbed me about his right arm (i said i would do a sketche to explain) but now with your lighting i forgotten ...
Now to push your C.G. up you could increase the surface effect of the skin, with layers on spec, opacity... etc to make it more realistic. The eye could reflect more the light (only one hilight on the eye could make more realistic your guy)
Keep it up !
I stay tuned !

04 April 2004, 03:47 AM
Heya buddy! Great models you have here!!!! I think you have some good shaders but you need to improve the textures and add a good human skin texture...but I know...still wip, right? ;)

Keep it up!!!!!

04 April 2004, 07:14 AM
Hey Antropus, thanks 4 the reply!

Well, my texturing skills don't arrive much further than this. I think that it is because I have never seen a bump or specular human skin texture, and I cannot get on the idea of what do I have to end with....

If somebody can help me, I would be glad :)

Maybe you already like how the texture looks like (I wouldn't have ended texturing him, if I didn't like it). Then I would like a lot to see your comment too!!

Thanks in advance!!

04 April 2004, 11:16 PM
Very nice:thumbsup: !!! Like his cool position...

For your maps:
Maybe u can do some sports to sweat a lil' bit, then take some pics (in your wished direction) from you and look at the areas of specularities etc or u can import it into PS as a template ....

Ok, it listens like a silly idea, but why not...? Give it a try:wavey: !
This way helped me understanding the different areas of skin...

Good luck!!

04 April 2004, 07:44 AM
Great model DDS, i really love the idea. Comments on the skin have been mentioned allready so I won't mention it again. The thing that i think could be changed is the Hair. Its gotta go. It lets the whole image down. Perhaps instead of hair you could have a badass tattoo on his head, that kind of travels down his kneck and onto his right peck or something. I think that could look pretty cool if it was just a black tattoo with no color. I also love the idea of havinga cell phone in his head, thats fantastic!

Great job overall :)

04 April 2004, 09:13 AM

i've improved the face bump mapping, and added a background.

I still have to make the eye highlight wider...

The background needs still a lot of work, but you will see...

thanks everybody for the crits, Lara, Harnelbe, antropus, I hope you will keep replying in my thread.

05 May 2004, 03:14 PM
hi! long time i didn't post anything

Shaykai: hey mate thanks for the comment. But I like the hair...maybe I don't have a good taste..but I like it, sorry.

Saschi0815: Hi Saschi, It sounds like a crazy idea, but I think it's good, so I did some sport, and looked the spec levels, that's a nice lesson heehehehhe.

hey! don't think I'm lazy!!...I was just testing zbrush, and making backups of my HD to format it....

I've tried to turn my background a little cooler, but I still think you can help me a bit, with the lighting and the overall feeling.

I thought a bladerunner feeling would fit the scene...but as you see I've gone to a home-made style.

Hope you like it.

05 May 2004, 07:37 PM
hey, your image is looking really cool, and i like the attention to little details ... i like the somoke it looks realistic!, your work on textures is really nice man! and concept is a bit weird but thats why is very interesting... i can see the men of the futeure looking exactly like this:thumbsup: great work!, keep rocking!

05 May 2004, 08:18 PM
Looks like an old school style of render...
Reminds me pictures of Steven stalhberg in the early 2000...
cool !

05 May 2004, 06:34 PM
Great work, just a suggestions, may be you are working a lot of bump into your texturing, maybe you might not need so much in some places.
Need some contrast in your overall lighting I guess will give it more depth.
All the best
Great work

05 May 2004, 08:08 AM (

This is the result with almost final lights setup. I try to give a contrast of blue to the orange of the back.

05 May 2004, 08:13 AM (

this is the render with final lighting and rendering, but until the last week I'm open to change it.

05 May 2004, 04:21 PM (

This is a test with a general tweaking, maybe I add some noise and smoke effects on another layer in photoshop...

06 June 2004, 10:23 AM (

Hey mates! the challenge is over and I would like to thank you all for the support. Here's the final image (for the milestone), I'm not happy with it at all now...too late.
Well, I wish you good luck, and see ya in the next one!
