I have decided on a concept, though I will have to upload my sketch later as I am not near a scanner at the moment. It is an emporer penguin (the big ones that live in antarctica) with gigantic wing implants to fulfill every penguins wish...to fly like the other birds do.
He will be large and imposing with his new wings and perhaps slightly clumsy and amusing to look at.
What do you all think?

Hey thanks 1st_angel. I was planning to post a concept drawing today but I am also working on an indie short film which has taken up most of my weekend. Hopefully this evening I will have time to get to that and to look at all of the great entries that I am sure are popping up on this thread. :)

This is a quick sketch of what I want to build. I am not sure what kind of environment I will put this guy in yet, but I think the rendering style I would like to achieve is something not quite photoreal but more real than cartoon. Perhaps keeping cartoon proportions to everything modeled and using more realistic textures. What do you guys think?

:wavey: :buttrock:  i like that,go for it.

grape and kmest: Thanks for the encouragement.
I am working on some front and side views of this penguin to use for model reference. I am also working on a sketch of the final scene which will include more penguins than just this main one.
I plan to start modeling this weekend. Will post more soon.

There will be a bunch of these guys in the final scene. They are likely to be awestruck and possibly even jealous of their friend's new implants.

Here is Pilot Penguin in color. What do you guys think of the color choices?

Nice. I think that the gear is not a good idea (how would he move on ice and how would he keep balance) leave the legs. Also try to implement a more futuristic hat. Make it metal, aerodynamic and with some sort of a navigation device.
Of course if you are going for a cartoony (funny) look everything is ok.

saturen3 - Thanks! I am glad to finally have some time to work on this. The film is also coming along. It is on hold this week so I should have some time for the Machineflesh challenge.
at133 - I am going for a cartoon look with this one at the moment. If I decide to go the futuristic route I will definately try out your suggestions. Thanks.
:) :) :)

Nice,,Could you esplain about your penguin some more?
Or some other sketchs?
04 April 2004, 07:27 AM
Well, I would like to say that this concept is being done in the 2D challenge and I hope that it is not where you got your idea from...
04 April 2004, 01:50 PM
I was not aware of anyone else doing something like this until now.
You may note that I posted my idea on 3/17/04, which is one and a half weeks before your 2D entry was posted.
Next time you make such a serious assertion you should check all of the facts first.
04 April 2004, 07:06 PM
I will jump in here and say that accusing Sara of stealing someone else's idea is downright wrong and in altogether bad form for this forum. You are also altogether wrong because she obviously posted her idea before you ever posted anything about a penguin on your thread Mirage_fr. I myself saw her come up with the idea while she was working on a film we were shooting before she could get to a computer and post the idea here on 3-17-2004. That date I might add is before Mirage_fr posted anything about a penguin whatsoever. Clearly, Mirage, you need to get your facts straight before you start accusing an artist of stealing another person's idea! Sara is a creative and conscientious person, and would do nothing of the sort!
I feel bad for you Mirage that you have to sling mud around accusatorily without having any factual basis for your claim.
Sara, it is obvious that you had this idea first, so keep running with it and don't let baseless accusations keep you down!

Keep going Sara , the concepts is looking really cool , can wait to see the penguin in 3d
04 April 2004, 10:00 AM
swadepgh, I didn't accuse you of copying. I was just asking. I didn't even check the date. But because you post idea before I did, I won't do this concept. I just think it is a bit silly to do the same.
Good luck with you penguin

Finally got to start on the modeling. This is a quick WIP for the regular penguin. I will continue to work on this model so suggestions are welcome. I think I want to go for a claymation type look in the end. I think this regular penguin will also be the starting point for the pilot penguin model.
Oh and of course he will have a white belly. I will include that in my next post.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments. Unfortunately I will not be able to complete this challenge. I hope that things are less busy for me when the next challenge rolls around. I had lots of fun working on the Alienware challenge and hope to have just as much fun on the next one. Good luck to everyone!
