Cameron Dutton has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.

03 March 2004, 10:25 AM (

These are the first concept sketches I've done. The idea behind this is from a drawing I did a while back.

The Seekers have had their entire bodies replaced by snakelike pipes.

Anyway I'll come up with a story behind them. I'm thinking of having about three of them in the piece with a "temple" type background.

03 March 2004, 11:34 AM (

Okay. I've decided how this thing is gonna start looking.

The story behind it is vague at this point as it's based on one of drawings you do for no particular reason other than it was in your head.

I had an idea about a year or so ago to draw something mechanical with a human head stuck in it. This evolved into a drawing of a rather unhappy face at the end of a large snake-like machine.

The idea for the face and head have stayed the same as my first concept sketches (not the original drawing) but the coils of metal only came to me tonight.

Gonna start work on the colour side of things now.

Where's the damn coffee?

03 March 2004, 11:49 AM
Take care with those eyes: they're too close from each other. Wouldn't you widen the view, to show more of the machinery?
Good luck!

03 March 2004, 12:15 PM
tanx man. I see the prob. Will attempt to make her less of an "I loved my brother overly much chick".

03 March 2004, 11:15 AM (

I'm just posting this to give an idea of how the colouring is gonna come out.

Still not sure as to how it's all gonna come together but I guess that's just how this painting is developing for some reason.

Still working on a title for this piece. The original title was "seekers" but as I've changed the focus of the image, I'm now left with a dillema.

Hope you enjoy it.

03 March 2004, 01:31 PM
Somehow snake-like bodies with human heads remind me of mythological stories ;)

I think the image of the snake-like seekers will look good, but you might want to think of a reason/purpose for their change of bodies.
You wrote didn't have story planned but i'm sure your creative mind made one up when you made the first scribble of the seekers, you just need to dig it up :)

i really like the coloring of the face that you've done. the 'eyebrows' look awesome. i'd really like to see the rest colored. i like it so far.

03 March 2004, 09:42 AM
Nice one cameron!

Really coming along!
Like the idea.
Looking really cool. Lots of potential
I cant wait to see some more of the coloured work.
are you going to keep the snake like parts really dark? think it would look cool contrasted with the light face. Either way I am looking forward to seeing some more shots.

03 March 2004, 09:53 AM
Really cool idea. I like the whole layout as well

Can't wait to see the end product

Good luck

Here is a little update on what I've been doing.

I know there was no story before but here is a rough one:

For thousands of years humanity relied on the sleeping minds of the Seekers for there very survival. Ripped from the wombs of “breeders”, women with the only purpose of holding a child to one month before term and then aborting it. These babies are then interred within the very heart of man’s new world. Without the slumbering individuals trapped for their entire lives within the machinery of mankind’s interstellar ships, humanity would have perished in the void.

Untold generations of these beings lay entrapped, unable to move, their bodies no longer attached as technology performed the functions of organs and limbs that would never function were not needed. They were all connected to the heart of a ship’s mainframe computer, each one performing the task only a human mind can. A computer cannot feel, nor can it reason; it only does what it is told to.

With all these minds connected, humankind was able to flee the shattered world that was Earth and traverse the unfathomable distances of space, reaching new worlds and becoming great. All this is about to be destroyed.

A seeker has awakened. She has become aware. She knows. She is awakening the others…

very cool! i love the story! awesome! howzabout adding in some sort of dramatic lighting to give it a little more flare? not that it doesnt have any flair already, thats my only critique so far.... bwa ha ha ha! check out my entry.

03 March 2004, 11:44 AM
Nice one!

Love the Story very cool, Very Sci-Fi.
The latest pic is looking cool.
I agree with Mike maybe add some dramatic lighting.
Also maybe add some more shading to the face but Im not sure about that as it would depend on what the pipes etc look like.
Maybe ad some small (LED type) lights to the machine as indicator lights or something.

Well I think it is coming along really nicely.

03 March 2004, 12:10 PM
tanx everyone

I'm gonna add the lighting in but still working on the colours

04 April 2004, 06:04 PM
Come Cameron

Add the lighting.

Where is the picture
I logged on today and ...... Nothing
What is this
We all know you have nothing better to do than draw so hurry up and draw some more we wanna see it! :hmm:

04 April 2004, 11:05 AM (

I've been a bit slack in my updates I know but what can you do?

I've changed the name of my piece to fit in more with the story and the feel of the image. I've stepped ahead a little bit and I will provide some close-ups soon.

The image will be given some atmosphere with lighting effects and detailing on the face.

04 April 2004, 04:52 PM
Hey Cameron!
Cool history! Frighten me!
Go on!

04 April 2004, 08:21 PM

looking really cool!
i bet it will look even better once you have added all the things you said you were going to...

04 April 2004, 09:24 AM
Coming along very nicely
cant wait to see the other bits you where typing about :bounce:

04 April 2004, 10:04 AM
I wasn't expected this would become so nicely done !!! You surprised me !

04 April 2004, 11:06 AM
Thanks for the cooments!!!

Taking a few days off of this (we have till June) to work on something else. For some reason this is taking me a hell of a long time and am getting spun out. Need to focus on something else.

Gonna do it in the WIP challenge.

04 April 2004, 10:14 AM (

I've finally gotten around to doing some more work on this. Slowly finalising everything.

Gonna be adding some more lighting and atmosphere and correcting things, the usual.

Hope you enjoy it.

04 April 2004, 10:13 PM
love the lighting on the left hand side of the page! its really well done! is there gonna be some extra lighting on the face? if you dont wanna add shadows to the face what about some sort of bright white ghostly effect on it?

looking good so far!

i'll update mine later this week.

04 April 2004, 11:37 AM (

Here is the "finished" version of my piece. I'm putting it up here for crits so I can get some feedback on it. Let me know what you think. I'm gonna leave it on here for a while before I post my final colouring milestone.

Fire away.

04 April 2004, 11:45 AM (

Here's a closeup of the face.

04 April 2004, 11:51 AM
Yeh I wanna give it a more ghostly effect. Thinking along the lines of some sort of mist with light streaming through it. Also maybe some water droplets (condensation) on the pipes might be in order.

Thats why I need the help. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks for the comments guys.

04 April 2004, 12:03 PM
Hey looking good, the close up makes quite a difference, detail on the face is very cool, I like the water drops idea it would give it a nice break to the clean metal surface, my only suggestion would be maybe with your ghostly light to give the nose a but of contrast so it stand out a bit more, just a thought.

Emrys has just gone on lunch but when he gets back I'll ask him to have a look.

looking fantastic

04 April 2004, 01:01 PM
Well Im back from Lunch.

Looking really good Cameron.
Looking very good indead.

I agree with mike and dirk.

As for dirks comment I think as the lighting stands you should try make some contrast around the nose as you loose the detail. esp on th shot with the whole image. It just looks a litle to white and makes it hard to see the nose.
The alternative is as mike said make a ghostly light or volumetric type light that would white out the features.
Have the light showing (like a target volume light in Max if that means anything to you) maybe with some dust particles etc highlighted. Like upclose to a headlight.

Um yeah thats all I can really suggest at the mo.

Dispite the above paragraph I really rate it.

I think waterdrops (esp if you can do cool reflections and refracted light) would look REALLY cool.

 Keep up the great work
That seems to be my catch phrase on CgNetworks "Keep up the great work .. Yeah.." (Cheesy grin) but I do mean it

04 April 2004, 03:46 PM
This is SUCH a cool piece...and your storline is SOOOOOOOOOO INTERESTING....

I have to say this deserves as much time as you can give it, and you have set the bar high for yourself - it looks like. I agree with the comments being posted...with a little to add. Pay as much attention to little details as you possibly can...things like that tiny inner rim between the eyelashes and the eye....the slight shadow beneith the lashes....the pale lines ...even IF ghostly that defines the nose... the curve/dip below the nose and above the lips...that kind of thing. If you have to look at pictures....and then spread the detail outwards...

I agree, try mist and water droplets as well...With the glow on her face, I think the big thing is there has to be something to show how or why it is glowing....what affects her face, or comes from her face, would be reflected around her too

I Love your detail work on the circuits in her face, you could give them a kind of processing shine... Anywho... Keep up your interesting work....LOOKING NICE

 :applause:

04 April 2004, 12:06 PM (

Okay. I've taken the advice of you all and would like to say thanks for the input.

I've added some water droplets and some texturing to the pipes. I've added some lighting effects. Still want to play around but it's going in a direction I'm happy with now.

04 April 2004, 10:29 PM

this image just gets better and better... what about adding a little grunge to the pipes? that might be overdoing it tho...

04 April 2004, 07:38 AM
As The Mighty M said
this image just keeps getting better and better.

Its looking great.
The water droplets add so much to it.

04 April 2004, 09:23 AM
i really like the feeling of your pic, contrast of the soft flesh and cold machine , nice work !

04 April 2004, 04:37 PM
nice image
push the contrasts on he face a little
it seems so other worldly right now (luminence)>her face but still is a part of that environment> her face is just not as solid as everything else in the shot>

05 May 2004, 11:46 AM (

Okay, it's been awhile but I've been busy trying to make a living. Here's the final colouring for my piece. Still want to go over it with a fine tooth comb and make a few adjustments but as it stands it's pretty much done.

Not sure it's up to scratch with all the other entries on here but I've learned heaps just by enetering this contest and that is why I did it.

Good luck everyone, I know I could use some with the quality of everyone's work.

Cheers and give me feedback.

05 May 2004, 01:18 PM
You didnt change the nose

05 May 2004, 01:41 PM
Howzit. The water drops on the metal looks great.

05 May 2004, 02:00 PM

05 May 2004, 03:23 PM

my entry (

05 May 2004, 01:58 AM
Thanks for the comments guys. I'm gonna have a look at the pic and change what needs to be changed but when time permits, got a heap of job hunting to do. Been too slack lately and have a fire under my butt, that and I need to pay the bills.

Londero: I see what you mean, maybe dropping the right one slightly and darkening... hmm.

Sigfire: Thanks but I did change the nose slightly. Put some glasses on, wait you already wear them. Jokes man, I know what you mean. I'll see.

Dirk: thanks buddy. Water took a long time, not cos it's hard but cos there are just too many of the damn things.

nochuss: I'm going for the slightly otherworldy look. I was trying to create the distinction between the flesh and metal as it's not supposed to be a part of her. I'll have a look at the contrasts but I'm not sure how to create them without making the face lose it's pale look... Any suggestions?

Viag: Thanks

Shinwa: Thanks, I wanted the circuits to look like they are just below the surface of the skin, inserted into her... Maybe some highlights...?

Mighty_M: Thanks mate. No grunge I'm afraid, wanting it slightly clean and clinical. PS: Where are my pictures?!!!!!

Thanks everyone.

Cam - I was actually just giving you sh!t because well just because I can. I really do love the piece.
As Dirk said the water droplets look brilliant, though they must have taken you forever I recon it was worth the effort.

Love all the little details like serial numbers etc on the metal.

As for the job hunting, Im sure you wont have ave any problems finding something.

If your still sick then get better and get back to work on this image :p

 Cheers and keep up the great work oh and when am I going to get some more images from your comic stuff huh ????

05 May 2004, 11:12 AM
Sigfire: I'll email some stuff to you AGAIN!!! You get my pics? Now go get stuffed.

06 June 2004, 01:01 PM (

Okay. I'm done, can't do anything else to this image.

I've adjusted the contrast on the eyes and face. Also added some detailing to the eyes. Went over the other parts of the picture and did a few touch-ups. I think this is it.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. This project was a severe learning curve and really helped me. Can't wait for the next one.

Anyway, Gonna be spending some time going through all the other entries and having one last look at my picture before sticking the big TIFF up. The actual image is something like 3000 or so pixels wide so I'll post some closeups etc.

This one is 1103 x 780.

Hope you enjoy it!!! Finally the thing is finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck to everyone else.
